Verrell Cogswin can be found in the (now revamped) Northern Desert of Ro at location 6080, -2478.

You say, 'Hail, Verrell Cogswin'

Verrell Cogswin says 'Sorry, but I am a very tired gnome. I am returning from a trip to Halas but this desert heat has worn me out and for some reason my gate spell keep failing. If only I had some water then I could make it to the wizard portal and wait for my brother Pellillo to pick me up.'

Give Verrell Cogswin a Flask of Water.

Verrell throws back his head and empties the flask in one gulp. . . 'Thank Brell your kindness will not go unnoticed. I am eager to get back home I have been in the cold environment of Halas for so long, I thought I was going to turn into a snowgnome. I am just glad we finally figured out the [recipe] for that concoction.'

You say, 'What recipe?'

Verrell Cogswin says 'My old shaman friend Shamus Felligan has been working on some way to change the color of items. He was very close to completing it but for some reason everytime he applied the mixture to something it would change the color temporarily. So he asked me to come down and help him. After a few months we realized what the problem was and we're now capable of changing things from red to green and from green to gray. I kept a sample for myself so I could turn my friend's red drake green as a surprise, but I would like to test it on a [red scale] first.'

You say, 'What red scale?'

Verrell Cogswin says 'Yes the red scales of a dragon would be perfect for a test now that I think about it. Do you know anyone with a red scale that would be willing to let me use it in the pursuit of magical studies?'

Give him a Red Dragon Scale (dropped off Lord Nagafen in Nagafen's Lair, Talendor & Zordakalicus Ragefire in Skyfire, and Echo of Nortlav in The Ruins of Old Paineel).

Verrell pulls a vial out of his pocket and places the red scale on the ground before pouring some of the vials contents on the scale. The scale begins to bubble and fizz as the liquid covers it entirely. Verrell looks at you and smiles before looking back at the scale. gasping and snatching the scale up from the floor.

Verrell says, 'Hmmm . . well I have some [good news] and a lot of [bad news] which do you want to hear first?

You say, 'What good news?'

Verrell Cogswin says 'Well the good news is the scale changed color but. . .'

You say, 'What bad news?'

Verrell Cogswin says 'The scale is no longer red it is gray. I confused the color change it is red to gray and gray to green, no need to fret tough I can just apply more and change it to green but there is a [catch].'

You say, 'What catch?'

Verrell Cogswin says 'The scale split into four pieces and the only way I can fix it is by applying a special [adhesive].'

You say, 'What adhesive?'

Verrell Cogswin says 'In order to make this special adhesive you will need to combine some [glue powder] and some [Deep Barley Brew] in this container with this special vial. Return the result to me and I should be able to fix the scale, but please try to hurry I have to meet my brother Pellillo
Cogswin at the wizard platform so he can take me home.'

Receive a four-slot container: Verrell's Box of Potions as well as a Potion Vial.

You say, 'What glue powder?'

Verrell Cogswin says 'Glue powder can be made from a fractured centaur hoof, some fire giant embers, and some jagged permafrost shards. The hoof can be found on centaurs in the Karanas, the fire giant embers you will have to retrieve from the fire giants in the caverns of exile and the shard can be found in the keep of Permafrost on a chilling terror. When you have collected these three things use a mixing bowl to grind them together and make glue powder.'

You say, 'What deep barley brew?'

Verrell Cogswin says 'Deep Barley Brew is easy for someone with a bit of brewing skill. Just buy some deep fungus mold, some barley, and a bottle of distilled spirits, combine them in a brew barrel and viola.'

Barley is bought from most brewing vendors. Deep Fungus Mold and Distilled Spirits can be found on brewing vendors all over Norrath (among them, Bargol Halith in the Plane of Knowledge).

In a Brew Barrel:
Deep Fungus Mold + Barley + Distilled Spirits = Deep Barley Brew (Brewing Trivial 122)

In Verrell's Box of Potions:
Deep Barley Brew + Glue Powder + Potion Vial = Thick Adhesive

Give the Adhesive to Verrell to receive Grey Scale Pieces and Thick Adhesive.

In Verrell's Box of Potions:
Grey Scale Pieces + Thick Adhesive = Grey Colored Scales

Hand Verrell the Grey Colored Scales to receive Green Dragon Scales.

Can't do the quest a second time.
# May 23 2006 at 1:17 AM Rating: Decent
Completed this quest last month with some help
from my guild in Caverns of Exile and the
Chilling Terror in permafrost. Got the rest myself and I was very happy to get my Green Dragon scale.
Then I thought this was easy enough I could do
this again and undercut the price of those who
were permacamping Severilous. Unfortunately
you CANNOT do the quest a second time. If
you give him the water you will hear the
quest bell but he tells you he is busy
and will not respond further, he hands back
your red dragon scales if you hand
them to him.
Just to let you know even with a small group 60+,
(i got the two hard drops just with a cleric
the second time around),you should be able
to get the drops you need in caverns and
permafrost, I would not try to solo the
chilling terror since he is a bit of a undercon.
Hope that helps someone. Avoid paying the big
prices for green dragonscale and you will be
helping a pally with his epic as well.

Can anyone help me with the spawn time on the Chilling Terror or is it a triggered mob, if so what triggers it?
broken or not?
# Oct 01 2005 at 12:07 AM Rating: Default
Can anyone tell me if this is now a warrior only quest?

Thanks
RE: broken or not?
# Apr 05 2006 at 10:42 PM Rating: Decent
Yes, it is a warrior only quest. Tried to do it with my rogue so that I could get a green dragon scale to give to a friend, and the gnome will not give me the quest. All the gnome will say to non-warriors is "Leave me be, I have a very important meeting to get to and I must conserve what energy I have to finish the trip."

Handing him a water flask got me the successful hand-in fanfare sound, and the exact same text instead of the quest prompt. I didn't bother trying to hand in red scale, since it needs several conversations to get the container.

I did the combine with my warrior, at a brewing skill of 54, failed first 4 trys, but was successful on the 5th. So ifd you want to spend the pp go for it. A troll with Char of 117 paid 52pp for the deep fungus mold and 5 pp for the distilled spirits.

At the 40 hour mark from server reset, he popped up on The Rathe server. Guildmate did his turn in and then I did mine, so he doesn't despawn after turn ins.

After you combine the glue powder, potion vial and Deep Barley Brew in the box, you get the Thick Adhesive. Give the adhesive to Verrell.

Verrell Cogswin says, "Excellent, I see you have managed to obtain the adhesive. Now just combine that with these scale pieces in the container I gave you and then give me the resulting grey scale so that I can finish what we started."

Get back the Thick Adhesive and pieces of scale and combine them in the box. You will end up with a grey scale on your cursor, box is now gone.

Once again Verrell Cogswin places the scale on the ground before him before pouring the contents of the vial on it. The liquid covers the scale and starts to bubble as the scale's color begins to change. A few seconds later, Verrell picks the scale up off the ground, hands it to you and says, "Here you go, a spiffy new green scale. sorry about the mess up, but even gnomes make mistakes."

You receive green dragon scales!

Give the grey scale to Verrell and get the green dragon scales in return.

Aye, I have the Thick Adhesive all ready to give him and sat at his spawn point for 7 hours yesterday (back at it today) and nothing. I petitioned and was told to wait because some "npcs need to be reset after a server down". So I am sitting here waiting.

They really should make quest turn in NPCs always up. After camping parts of the quest pieces, the npc should at least be up for me to finish this. It's just not right to have to camp him too.

Still Broken?
# Feb 13 2004 at 8:50 PM Rating: Excellent
They fixed the container but for some reason I cannot combine the vial, glue powder, and deep barley brew in it..
Says you cannot combine these items in this container type. So looks like it still is broken :(
RE: Still Broken?
# Feb 27 2004 at 12:57 AM Rating: Decent
Aye, am having the same issue with the quest as well. Can't combine the Glue Powder, Potion Vial and Deep Barley Brew in the potion box he gave me.

I petitioned and a GM told me they are having some issues with some of the quest combine containers and are working to fix the issue. So now my warrior is stuck walking around with a box of those quest items until they fix the box. Some one in my guild thinks it's because of the new tradeskill UI and it's affecting a few other containers because of it. I guess once a day I can log her in and try to combine the stuff to see if it's been fixed. *chuckles*

I didn't do this quest yet (looking for components), but I believe you can combine those 3 in a Mortar & Pestle. As I know this box is used to combine Thick Adhesive with a broke scale that ******* will return to you after you show him adhesive. Good luck

This is BROKEN!

as of today, verrell is giving out a 1-slot container. Hard to combine his 3 items in a 1-slot.

Lucy's entry makes it look as though they broke it on the 24th of january (look at the history of the box of potions)

Well I started this quest the other day and i handed in my scale. I got the vial and the container back. Unfortunately, the box I recieved was only a 1 slot container. I have the vial and the Deep Barley Brew but haven't made the glue yet. Does anyone know if this is broken or what?

Finishing the Quest
# Dec 06 2003 at 8:51 PM Rating: Decent
Ok here we go.
you need to get your Brewing up to at least 102 for the combine on the Barley Brew, I was able to do it on my first try easy with a Gerlock device. There is no skill needed for makeing the Adhesive. You just put it all in the Mortar and pestle and hit combine easy as that. After you combine the adhesive take it back to Verrell Cogswin and make sure you have the box he gives you at the begining with you. Just walk up to him and hand the adhesive in. He will give it back to you with the broke dragon scale. Put both in the box that he gave you and hit combine. It will make the Grey dragon scale. Turn that into Verrell Cogswin and he in turn ghanges it to a Green tradable Dragon scale.

Brewing 102 Geerlock ( Deep Barley Brew )
Thick Adhesive ( no skill just combine )
Fractured Hoof ( go kill happy on Centaurs it will drop )
Permafrost Shard ( 1 good grp can kill Chilling Terror 2 makes it easy and fast )
Fire Giants in Caverns of Exlie ( Take a small Raid like 3 grps cause there are named that have good drops and just have fun they were a pretty common drop )
IF YOU ARE NOT A WARRIOR VERRELL COGSWIN WILL NOT TALK TO YOU.

I will post the remainder of the Quest from logs that have not been finished above. Verrell can be found just south of the docks to IC next to a piliar.

Class Problem
# Nov 26 2003 at 12:47 PM Rating: Decent
It appears that you can only do this quest if you are a warrior. I tried on shaman on Indifferent faction and he wouldnt offer me the quest. Warrior same indifferent faction and he went through key words. Didnt risk handing in scales on my shaman as thought he would probably swallow them...

Never seen the Triggered Ragefire drop any scale. He drops Armour pieces but neve a scale.

The Chilling Terror is one nasty MoB. Yellow to 53 with a nasty 500pt AE spell that turns you to a Skeleton. I took 4k damage in about 5 seconds.
He wiped the floor with my group of 4 with levels 53 to 65.

The Fractured Centaur Hoof is an uncommon drop off any Centaur in SK (The only place I have hunted them. No faction hit for killing them either).

Ragefire and red scale
# Nov 11 2003 at 8:03 AM Rating: Default
I've never seen Ragefire drop a scale either - if he does it's so rare as to be useless.

And if he was a worse bottleneck for the cleric than the 4 shards, then man clerics REALLY had it bad.

Only decent way I've seen to farm shards is get a couple of pet-heavy nuke-heavy groups with some tanks, make a raid, and slaughter herds of mobs at a time. My guild did that Sat and last nite, got a total of 5 shards for 2 clerics. If you've got a raid for Ixiblat up, it's easy to kill in SF before and after - that's what we did while cleric #1 ran and did turn ins so that we could do Ragefire and finish that epic off - spent 3 or 4 hours at it, had great fun, and got a lot closer to the second clerics epic.

And frankly, I'd rather just kill the dragons for the scales for my epic - but I'm glad that there is a work around if you somehow can't get that green scale.
RE: Ragefire and red scale
# Nov 11 2003 at 5:42 PM Rating: Decent
The 4 shards requirement for cleric epic is nothing compared to the way it was. Human rage would only spawn like once a week, you so you would camp there day and night for a week to claim the camp only so some uber guild could come in and MB rage right before your very eyes...so a few hrs of shard was welcomed by all

Amen. They changed the format just before I had to camp Ragefire. Made getting the Cleric Epic a little easier. Now, if they would increase the drop rate of some other piece pieces in Hate and Fear, the classes that need those will be a little easier too.
Ragefire?
# Nov 11 2003 at 7:45 AM Rating: Default
Never seen Ragefire drop a red scale yet. Talendor and Naggy yes. Ragefire no. But then I have only killed Ragefire 7 times and it was at least 10 before I saw Vindi drop the ST key piece.

Ok so lets see,

Clerics have a triggered epic spawn so their epic's bottleneck is now trivial,
Warriors only need to kill Ragefire (shock! the triggered Epic mob for the clerics!) to get red scales to make them green hence their epic's bottleneck has just become trivial,
And Ive killed 285 Ashenbone drakes for MY epic's bottleneck and I still havent got ****
Way to GO Sony!

This post is specifically for Njarl the Flatulent whose post was skipped by the Filters.

The Joys of Filters. Your post was obviously filtered because of your inability to see the bigger picture.

Yes one of the bottlenecks has been removed from the Warrior Epic. Warriors don't have to be Lvl 65 with a Uber Guild to get the green dragon scales.

I have been involved in many a Triggered Ragefire killing and have never seen a scale drop from him. Yes we need to kill Naggy or Talendar to get our first scale. Naggy is trivial for a reasonable guild and you could always get a pickup raid for him if you so desire.

Now As to your Epic. SoE kindly revamped an entire zone and quartered the price of the Stone needed to get a group to Hate to make your bottleneck smaller. Hate is now an XP zone with small agro ranges. A Halfway decent Puller backed up by a halfway decent Cleric with Pacify can pretty much pull any Tier 1 MoB. Get in there with a Lvl 65 Cleric with Pacification and you can Own most of the zone. Heck. I at lvl 53 was managing to pull most standard Tier 1 Camps with support by a 58 Cleric. Yes your item is a rare drop. However did you pull the named Ashenbone Drake in Tier 1? I think you may find the item a more common drop from it. I think the named is called Ashenbone Broodmother. Nice Lvl 54/55 drake that spawns near the hallway to Maestro.

So stop your blubbing and go out there and work for your Epic.

It is super rare.. And yeah the changes can be nice ..but also bad.. the ranger piece is now rare (use to drop 100% of inny ..now rare of minis and 50% of uber inny). Essences for enc epic are also rare now.

I have seen a hide drop once. Its SUPER RARE!
Something around 150:1 and pre revamp the spawn was either 3 or 7 days for all of 4 drakes. And now there maybe be more but its still the rarest of the rare!

If you haven't been through it you have no idea. One of the most rare drops in the game.period. Easily this makes this epic that hardest there is imho. And the fact you can only go for 5 (long respawn time) ..at a time and you had to have a wizard to port you plus groupage.

Revamp is good.. but it still is QUITE RARE.

and plus the soul leech which is uber rare of the fear minis also on a 3 day spawn. And they dt.

A rl friend has been working on this darn near 2 years. Took him something like 50ish fear raids and around 250 hate raids (which one never dropped). Thank god its mqable.. except the mq failed once(thx SOE). 2nd one did work.

Only other mob that can contend imho is Quillmane for mage epic and that's just mabye..but anyone 30& up can camp him ..and drops it far more commonly...( I got 2 in 2 days) and its NOT in an altered plane!
