Is this class still active post-research revamp?

Researcher Alvarik is located at +1375, +75. If you are an INT-based caster class with a research skill over 100:

You say, 'Hail, Researcher Alvarik'

Researcher Alvarik says 'Hello there. Are you too a student of the arcane?'

You say, 'Yes, I am a student of the arcane.'

Researcher Alvarik says 'Excellent. I hold myself as a master of researching the arcane. Even though I study mostly in the art of wizardry, I still carry tomes of the other realms. If you are a master of research and would like to borrow a copy of the research tome, let me know what school of magic you belong to and I may be able to help you out. I also carry with me hand copied works of the masters. If you like you can buy one from me for a small fee.'

He carries necromancer and wizard books, which outline the recipes for high-level spells. His assistant, Assistant Vagli, has the books for enchanters and magicians. Each class has around 8 books, and each book costs around 2 pp.

You say, 'I am an enchanter.'

Researcher Alvarik says 'So you fancy yourself an enchanter? I dabble a bit in it myself, though I am more interested in the art of explosions! Nevertheless, here is the Phantasmist's Tome. Good luck to you in your studies!'

You receive a Phantasmal Tome.

If you claim to be something you are not:

Researcher Alvarik says 'Do you take me for a fool? It is obvious that you are not what you state. Begone from my sight, your false statements disgust me and insult the realms of the arcane.'

Need all dialogues.

Strangely enough, is it. I just tried it tonight with my necro after seeing the question up there about it. Said the trigger phrase and got Warlock's Book of Binding.

Just tried to complete the quest. I am currently level 26 with a research skill of 100....Alvarik said he was glad to see I was keeping up with my studies...However, I would be unable to understand the more complex spells and to return when I was ready....SO, 1 of 2 possibilities exist. 1) the level 36 cap is running and i will have to wait for 10 more levels or sony upped the minimum research skill above 100. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
No level limit!

Well, other than having to have research.

My level 16 enchanter did this and her research skill is at 155.

Ok they changed alchemy to have no lvl cap, except that you have to be a certain lvl to start it, so my question is did they change research as well?

Research skill

Research is under trade skills. My lvl 35 enchanter has a 143 research skill and it is still climbing. If it is lvl x 5 she should top out at 175 for skill level at 35. That would mean that I would need to be a lvl 49 to research KEI and other high lvl spells.

Just a thought. Safe journeys and happy hunting.

You receive Phantasmal Tome, item lore: "Phantasmal Tome"

You say, 'I am also a wizard.'

Researcher Alvarik says 'Do you take me for a fool? It is obvious that you are not what you state. Begone from my sight, your false statements disgust me and insult the realms of the arcane.'

You cry.

The only way to get the books is to have research at or beyond 100...tried it out my self was at 98 before got no book...got it to 100..got book so 100 is target skill for this quest. It is made this way so that you play the game longer and sink more money into this living machine called Everquest =)

I believe they have changed the requirements for this. Just a few mins ago at level 37 with 100 research my chanter got the message "You seem to be keeping up on your studies. Without true knowledge of research, the original research notes will be too complicated for you to understand. Please come back whne you are more knowledgeable of these things."

Thanks very much for the comments folks. I usually gained a point or so every few combines... My level 35 mage is at 100 and I burned over 50 attempts with no skill gain. I thought I was doomed until I read this. Thanks.

35 - 15 = 20 * 5 = 100.

I'm at cap.
Skill to get Advanced Research Books.
# May 12 2004 at 6:09 PM Rating: Good
OK. I can confirm that you need a skill of greater than 100 to get these books. I tried to get the Advanced Research Book for my 36th level wiard with a 100 skill and was told to get some more experience first. Went to bank and put Geerlok in and the 5% boost in skill (to 105) was enough to get the book.

I hope this helps anyone who was curious.

Also a quick note on advanced research. The higher level spells of the Non-Research classes require this Advanced tome to research. The lower tomes will not work.
#REDACTED, Posted: May 11 2004 at 9:06 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) MY SKILL IS AT 120 AND I AM LVL 40
#LordLor, Posted: Mar 28 2004 at 3:31 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) OK - for all you people who aren't aware of how most tradeskills work - there is a level limit based on what your level is for most classes. Your level limit is - Your level times 5, plus 5 points more. That's it, end of discussion. If you're a level 16, and have just gotten research, you can already take it to (16x5)+5=85. Hope that helps straighten out those who don't understand.

Uhhhh no actually Emmo is more on the mark but most everyone got a little part of it right, and the formula is actually (LEVEL-15)x5. Research is a caster class skill and not a normal tradeskill like baking or smithing, wich everyone can do with no cap. It's more like rogue poison skills or shammy alchemy.
When you get research at level 16 it's stuck there with till you get to level 19, then you can raise it to a skill of 20. Why they did it this way I have no idea tho, lol. I guess it was their way of giving casters a small chance of getting the first of the research only spells and still keep it a low skill thru the middle levels.
I have 3 caster toons myself. All of them have research maxed for their different levels (guild trainers prove it saying it's already to the limit) and it all fits with the formula.

Peace.

the cap is lvl-15X5 so at 35 you can have 100 skill but you have to have over 100 ( i tried at 100) so you had to wait till over 100 so in my case that would be 36lvl
WRONG

If you can do this quest by hailing him, then you can do it anytime, so long as your Research is over 100.
RE: WRONG
# Dec 29 2003 at 7:20 PM Rating: Decent
well yes and no... you cant get research untill 16 anways, and there is a cap per lvl... so im assuming you cant get a 100 in research untill lvl 36 =)
RE: WRONG
# Mar 12 2004 at 7:33 AM Rating: Default
Last time i checked, the tradeskills were not limited to level other than starting level. Meaning once you start research, you could go all the way to 200. To get past 200, of course you have to be level 51 to start aa's.

My understanding is that research is a class skill which is limited by level in the usual mathematical way of 5 times the elvel plus 5, but tradeskills are not limited in any such way. Tradeskills all have a maximum of 200, with the exception of one skill you may get to 250, no matter what level you are. You need no AAs to reach 250 in the first skill of your choice. Only if you desire a second skill to exceed 200 must you use AA points in tanaan craft mastery, and in that case you must be level 51 or higher to use an AA skill. But for that first skill reaching 250, you can be level 1 if you have lots of money and time.

Hope that cleared things up a bit.

If Research were a tradeskill I would agree with you on that, but its not.

Research is a class skill, like Rogue Poisonmaking, or Shaman Alchemy... and as such it is restricted to a 5 point per level cap once you can actually learn the skill.

Tinkering is much the same way. Starts at 16, can't increase until 19 because cap is (Level - 15) x 5. Interested to find out if skill points can be bought in Research like it can in poisonmaking (bought all my poison skills from 120 to 250 - last few were expensive, but beat farming/buying the components)

Yes indeed. Cost me about 1400pp to go from 130 to 185 in research today.

Your assumption is wrong. My 36th level Magician has a Research skill of 105.
RE: WRONG

assumption is correct (level-15)*5 for research

36-15=21*5=105
