    Short version

Once you reach level 15, you will receive a "mysterious message:"

A mysterious voice whispers to you, 'If you can feel me in your thoughts, know this -- something is changing in the world and I reckon you should be a part of it. I do not know much, but I do know that in every home city and the wilds there are agents of an organization called the Wayfarers Brotherhood. They are looking for recruits . . . If you can hear this message, you are one of the chosen. Rush to your home city, or search the West Karanas and Rathe Mountains for a contact if you have been exiled from your home for your deeds, and find out more. Adventure awaits you, my friend.'

If you are not sure what town you started in, you can also go to the Rathe Mountains gypsy camp or the SE corner of Western Karana. Once you arrive there, you will receive another "mysterious message" telling you to find a specific NPC. You need to find the person mentioned and hail him. He will tell you about the wayfarer camps and mention 5 more NPC's - one per camp. Head to a camp and talk to the NPC there and he will ask you some questions. Answer them and you will get flagged to use the adventure system and the Magus teleports that take you from camp to camp.

    Answers:

    Detailed Version

This is the introduction you'll see in Greater Faydark. Others will be very similar.

A mysterious voice whispers to you, 'If you can feel me in your thoughts, know this -- something is changing in the world and I reckon you should be a part of it. I do not know much, but I do know that in every home city and the wilds there are agents of an organization called the Wayfarers Brotherhood. They are looking for recruits and . . . If you can hear this message, you are one of the chosen. Rush to your home city, or search the West Karanas and Rathe Mountains for a contact if you have been exiled from your home for your deeds, and find out more. Adventure awaits you, my friend.'

You have entered The Greater Faydark.

A mysterious voice whispers to you, 'Enyaanuia Windancer in the tavern by Trueshots Bows has just joined the Wayfarers Brotherhood and has some information about them, and how you can start doing odd jobs for them. You looked like the heroic sort, so I wanted to contact you . . . discreetly.'

    You say, 'Hail, Enyaanuia Windancer'

Enyaanuia Windancer says 'Come to find out about the Wayfarers Brotherhood, hm? I think I saw you around here long ago. Because you are familiar to me, I will trust you with some [information].'

You say, 'I want some information.'

Enyaanuia Windancer says 'The Wayfarers Brotherhood is pretty particular about who they do business with. You will need to prove yourself to them. You can start gaining their gratitude by helping them. The Wayfarers Brotherhood will ask you to answer some questions when you first meet with them. They tend to call all of their assignments 'adventures.' You'd do well to keep that in mind as they'll be more likely to give you some tasks. There is other information that makes them easier to [deal with] too.'

    You say, 'Deal with?'

Enyaanuia Windancer says 'There are several camps of Wayfarers Brotherhood explorers around the world. In each camp you'll find a trusted Wayfarers Brotherhood member that has the task of recruiting adventurers that will take on interesting, and potentially lethal, [work]. Some members will tell you stories, if they think you are worthy of learning such prized information. Others will share their treasures with you, but only if you do work for them.'

    You say, 'Work?'

Enyaanuia Windancer says 'The Wayfarers Brotherhood believes in giving something for something. For each adventure you take from them, they will add you to their Favor Journal. With the points of Favor that their record keepers have counted for you, you can trade your good Favor for wonderful treasures and goods. Also, the more adventures you do for the Wayfarers Brotherhood, the more your Favor increases. The harder jobs get you more Favor, by the way. As you gain more Favor, the Wayfarers Brotherhood treasure keepers will let you peek at some of their more unique and sought after items. So, it pays to get in good with them, you see! And there's [more]!'

    You say, 'There's more?'

Enyaanuia Windancer says 'You should also know that there are five magi in the Wayfarers Brotherhood that have found very unique magic stones in the world that they are able to use to transport adventurers to one another. They have placed a magus with one of these stones at each large camp. They call it Farstone Magic. And that's not the only [interesting ore] we've seen lately.'

You say, 'Interesting ore -- you are messing with me, elf woman!'

Enyaanuia Windancer says 'We've found some strange items off the dead in the dungeons. At first we just thought they were simple things -- rocks, pebbles, gems, and the like -- and then we noticed they had very unusual auras about them. Well, one day, Morden Rasp was toying with one -- a shiny green shard -- and he went to scrape it with his dagger. Suddenly, the shard began to reform and fused with his dagger. While the dagger remained as fine as ever, Morden himself felt a surge of strength! So, you will want to watch out for these strange magic pieces in the world. Now, I suggest you go talk to Selephra Giztral, Barstre Songweaver, Vual Stoutest, Teria Grinntli, or Ruanya Windleaf. They handle all of those who are interested in working for the Wayfarers Brotherhood and getting rewards. Remember well what I've told you!'

You have completed a step toward becoming a great adventurer. Well done!

    In the Everfrost Peaks:

    You say, 'Hail, Teria Grinntli'

Teria Grinntli says 'Welcome stranger. I'm afraid you must answer some questions before I can consider opening our wealth of skill and knowledge to you. First, what does the Wayfarers Brotherhood call the tasks they will ask you to do for them?'

    You say, 'Give me adventures!'

You have completed a step toward becoming a great adventurer. Well done!

Teria Grinntli says 'We will reward based on your improving position with the Wayfarers Brotherhood. We keep a certain type of log that records how often and well you help us. What is it called?'

You say, 'It's a favor journal.'

You have completed a step toward becoming a great adventurer. Well done!

Teria Grinntli says 'Who discovered that some treasures have strange magical properties by poking one with his dagger?'

    You say, 'Morden Rasp'

You have completed a step toward becoming a great adventurer. Well done!

Teria Grinntli says 'Our brilliant magi use a special kind of magic to help teleport us between camps. What is it called?'

    You say, 'A farstone'

Teria Grinntli says 'Congratulations! I believe now that you are trustworthy enough to take on some of the adventures the Wayfarers Brotherhood have to give. We will be able to continue with our discussions once you complete some adventures. We can also help you with travel between our camps. Be well, fair Guiscard. I'm sure, someday, you will be a great addition to the Wayfarers Brotherhood.'

You have completed a step toward becoming a great adventurer. Well done!
Your faction standing with Wayfarers Brotherhood has been adjusted by 100.

Teria Grinntli says 'Take this Adventurer Stone with you on your journeys into the dungeons. You will find it useful. Should you lose it somehow, come talk to me and I'll replace it.'

    Rewards:
    - Faction with Wayfarers Brotherhood
    - Adventurer's Stone (needed to use the Magus portals)

These same steps will work on any of the following NPCs: Selephra Giztral, Barstre Songweaver, Vual Stoutest, Teria Grinntli, and Ruanya Windleaf.

Upon the hail that maxes out the stats of your Adventurer's Stone, you will see in red:

It's time to acknowledge you as a Wayfarer. Give Chaenz Abella in the Commonlands your Adventurer Stone and he'll replace it with your very own Wayfarers Emblem. Or, if it's being used in a charm, you must remove it to get your new one. And, if you simply destroy the stone, he will replace it with your much-deserved emblem. Just tell him you want your [emblem].

Head to Chaenz Abella in the Wayfarer's camp in the Commonlands.

Chaenz Abella says 'I heard you had become knowledgeable about all aspects of the dungeons we've found. I must confess that I never had you pegged for such a great adventurer! I suppose I should welcome you -- as a member of the Wayfarers Brotherhood. The honor is well deserved. Congratulations!'

Chaenz Abella says 'Here is a token of my appreciation. Should you lose your Wayfarers Brotherhood Emblem or misplace it, I or Barstre, Selephra, Ruanya, Teria, or Vual will replace it.'

    Receive Wayfarers Brotherhood Emblem.

I have a Erudite chanter that gets the "sorry I can't help you... seek someone closer to your home." msg. This is the best page I've found on the subject and perhaps the 12 page I checked so I've run out of resources.

The Erudite has checked both NPC's listed above and the Gypsy camp in Rathe. I may check the one in Karana's but am hoping for an answer here.

This toon goes way back to the first few months of EQ and /charinfo says Guild Lobby, Toxxulia Forest so maybe it's bugged idk. Or maybe there's an NPC in Tox that I haven't hailed?

    Any help is much appreciated.

I know this is a bit late, but there has been a bug that sets characters to Crescent Reach as their hometown. Happened to one of my alt clerics that was made years before CR was even thought of. It's worth checking out.

Try zoning into Erudin. If that's your home city, then you should get a yellow announcement that tells you to go speak to someone. Is that the same person listed on this page? It could be someone different.

    If you're evil-aligned, try Paineel.

Not listed so I figure I'd try the 2nd part of city and sure enough got voice telling me to see Thwinose and there he was didnt need to look for him 358.18, -811.64, -10.25.

Use the lift, go to SW for 10-20 meters.
At your left you may see stairs, go on top of the stairs.
Once on top of stairs in front of you (east) you may see him in a chair.

It seems that even my little level 18 wizzy cannot get the stone in the usual fashion, and I am not sure, but I THINK that is still the right level range for the Voice to be whispering.

For my 27 necro I petitioned, and the GM reset my starting town, so upon login, I was able to choose my starting city. I chose Neriak Third Gate, and sure enough, upon zoning into Neriak Commons, the Voice whispered to me. Upon zoning into Third Gate, the voice told me who to go see. I hailed Torxal Smalane and was given the quest. I now have my stone.

I guess TSS messed up everyone's starting city, even those of us who made our toons before the expansion came out. I've three more characters with no stone, so I guess I will have to petition each one.

I would try what Kalysta suggested first, and try hailing the NPCs listed for West Karanas and Crescent Reach. If that doesn't work, /petition and explain the problem.

    Good luck!

My DE Necro is 25. I also forgot to get my Adventurer's Stone, and the Mysterious Voice has gone quiet. When I hail the NPCs in Neriak they tell me to look closer to home. I was in Neriak Third Gate at the time, so I fail to see how much closer to home I can get. I tried the NPC in Rathe, for non-froggies. Same message. I gated back to the Guild Lobby and hailed the magus. She would only take me to Nedaria's Landing, saying maybe someone there might find some use for me. So off I went and hailed the NPCS in the camp. One, Ieandra Pael, has a different quest message than what is listed at Illia's. She wants 3 griffawn beaks and in return for my help, she might have some information for me. Last time I did the quest on my LDoNed ranger, she just gave pp and xp like the other quests. So maybe just the text has changed. I will update if I find out differently.

Incidentally, upon hailing the magus in Nedaria's Landing, he will take me wherever I want to go. So I went to BB. I hailed Vual Stoutest, but he only gave some story about staring a vampire in the face, which is more like what you get when hailing these guys after getting your stone and doing LDoNs.

So far I can only use the Nedaria's Landing magus to go to the other camps. The rest of the magii only take me to Nedaria's Landing. I am thinking the key to the problem may lie there.

Most people's "home city" were defaulted to Crescent now.
    Check there.
Supposedly, the one in the karanas will work for any home city, incase someone lost that faction.

I made all my toons pre-TSS, so their hometowns should be set to the old ones. I tried all the suggested NPCs - Rathe, Karanas, BOTH Neriak ones, and Crescent Reach and still get the same message - "I'm afraid I can't help you, try closer to home".

While I was in PoK doing spell research, I got the Mysterious Voice whispering at me, but before I could run around Norrath hailing NPCs, RL called me away. When I logged back in and ran around, no one would talk to me. I'll try again if I get the Voice - otherwise I guess it is /petition.

I honestly believe it is the reduced rewards compared to what is elsewhere. A simple revamp of the items on the purchase tables and loot tables to modernize them is resoundingly called for.. also put back in ez ones.

not making my gnome who started in crescent Reach go to Aakanon and spend an hour looking at the notes on Muse's old maps to find the duudess and a similar frustration with my bard who started in CR and had to go to Shar Vahl would also heeeelp Me please, of course.

I agree. They did take a step in the right direction by adding what zone you started in or at least the general area. Type in /char. The first is where your bound. The second is the general starting area. Im not entirely sure they have it right though. For my human ranger it sais qeynos hills even though the npc i needed to talk to was in surefall glade and starting up a new human ranger i was given the option of either crescent reach or surefall glade. Picking surefall glade sent me to that zone.

This was a good idea but it came a few years too late. In the very least they should have put this in back when crescent reach was first put in since you could also start characters there and people that came back to eq after a few months absence were given a choice to switch to crescent reach if they wanted too or perhaps everyone after serpents spine was released.

This quest should take 15 minutes tops. You have to go to your home city to initiate the quest, but you can obtain the farstone that allows you to use the Maguses from ANY of the LDON camps. It's just a matter of finding the person you need at that particular LDON camp.

All my toons did the quest at the Butcherblock camp because it's easy to get to.

    North Ro
    Ruanya Windleaf

    ButcherBlock
    Vual Stoutest

    Commonlands
    Barstre Songweaver

    South Ro
    Selephra Giztral

Also you can just say "Farstone" and jump over all the jumping through hoops.

In the guide above, going to Everfrost Peaks is given as 1 example when you seek out the 2nd NPC. From POK, I think Barstre Songweaver in Commonlands is somewhat easier to locate and likely quicker. Barstre Songweaver is in the Commons "tunnels" where all the trading & buffing used to take place before Bazaar was added. Not sure about faction though... in the olden days evil race was KOS in freeport area.

For those who don't know this, here's the direction:

From PoK, take Freeport stone, which is alongside the stones like Nexus, Qeynos, PoT etc. You'll pop along the side walls of city in Freeport, so follow the wall away from the city gate to zone into Commonlands. Once in commonlands, hug the wall (cliff) on the left and keep running. If you keep going, grassy field will turn into desert. Some distance into the desert you will find a big tunnel which goes into the cliff. Go inside and eventually you will find a big opening to your left where lots and lots of NPCs gather. In the middle, there are several NPCs who form a circle and he's standing there.

Once you get your farstone, you might as well try it out. South east of Barstre Songweaver there is a big pillar and crates, with NPC called Magus Zeir. Hail him and port out of the tunnel.

I just got back from about 3 years in other games, and my young dwarf berserker, (who was created long before crescent reach), had to speak to the person in West Freeport. I know Freeport was never his home city.

I first tried both N & S Kaladim, then figured Crescent Reach even though I was born before that came out. Since that didn't work, I started around central PoK and hit every stone. I finally found his home in W Freeport, as I said, wierd.....................

Thank you very much for your post. I too have a Dwarf created LONG before Serpent Spine came out and had tried everything. Came here to see if anyone else was having the same issue. I tried zoning into Freeport from PoK, and Bingo, instant who to talk to. thanks to you!!

    The fix

I returned to EQ after a long absence to my pvp toon on Zek. I have a human druid, and I created him on Sullon Zek before an alternative start zone was available. I couldn't recall if I started him in Surefall because Sullon was deity based and other start city options may have been available. After hitting each possible home city, I found I could not complete this quest.

The answer to my problem was to use the /setstartcity command to reset your home city. I didn't require a GM to do this. I typed /setstart to bring up a menu. In my case I had the option of Crescent or Surefall. Each had a number to the left, Sure fall was '3'. I typed /setstartcity 3, got a message that my start city had been reset, and then entered the zone and got the appropriate message to complete the quest.

Warfafarers notice when in right zone

When you zone into the right zone, this mess will pop up. "A mysterious voice whispers to you (NPC Name) who is currently (gives you loc of NPC) has just joined the Warfarers Brotherhood and has some information about them, and how you can start doing odd jobs for them. YOu looked like the heroic sort so I wanted to contact you discreetly."
