This quest begins with Sulgar at location is 3030, -2395, -58, in Everfrost (just into the main area of Everfrost and to the north boundary).

You say, 'Hail, Sulgar'

Sulgar says 'Hail, traveler! Would you happen to [know] the location of any of the spokes of Tarton's Wheel?'

You say, 'What is Tarton's Wheel?'

Sulgar says 'Tarton's Wheel was a device that Tarton constructed to let him travel through the planes. If you are [interested] in helping me reassemble it, I will [reward] you well.'

You say, 'What reward?'

Sulgar says 'If you bring me the [Staff of the Wheel] and the [Star of Eyes], I will reward you with a rune of frost and a rune of the astral - for personal use, of course..'

You say, 'What is the Staff of the Wheel?'

Sulgar says 'The Staff of the Wheel and the Star of Eyes are made by combining the ten spokes of Tarton's Wheel in a [wheel case].'

You say, 'What wheel case?'

Sulgar says 'I will lend you this wheel case - put the ten spokes of the wheel in it when you have collected them. I did say lend, however. I shall need the case back. Once you have constructed the Staff of the Wheel and the Star of Eyes, I will trade you them for a rune of frost and a rune of the astral.'

You receive "A glowing chest" (identifies as "Tartons Wheel Case"), a 10-slot TEMPORARY container, and a Tome of the Wheel, which reads:

THE WHEEL OF TARTON

TARTON HAD A WHEEL
THAT ONCE HE BUILT
TEN SPOKES TO WOOD
BOUND BY A STAR

TARTON HAD A WHEEL
TO ROAM THE PLANES
SHAPED TWICE BY ICE
TO GUIDE HIS WAY

TARTON HAD A WHEEL
THAT ONCE HE LOST
CLASH IN THE SKY
TO EARTH HE FELL

TARTON HAD A WHEEL
WAS SUNDERED PAST
THE PIECES SCATTERED
ACROSS THE WORLD

AZIA
In the crossing
Of the waters
Rests a ship
On its side

Drowned sailors
Swim around it
Past this ship
The Azia lies.

BEZA
In the land
Of wind and snow
This stream of water
Does not flow

Below the ice
Upon dry land
The Beza rests
Held by no hand

CAZA
In the Lake of Rathe
An island looms
It hides a treasure
In its womb

A stone tower
Protected sleeps
Those who guard it
Can not weep

DENA
A cauldron stews
But does not boil
Its edges rock
Not dirt or soil

Inside the cauldron
Lurks a door
The Dena lies
Some paces score

ENA
Once Trolls did live
Within these halls
Then vengeance struck
Their might did fall

A well of water
Upside down
The Ena rests
Yet does not drown

FANA
The tears of Marr
A pool do make
Two towers stand
Within this lake

In one tower
Guarded high
The Fana dreams
Of sleeping dry

GEZA
Upon the mountain
Through the pass
The Tiger Roars
With eyes of glass

The Tiger sees
The waters fall
Geza is held
Under its thrall

HEDA
Under this city
Upon the coast
Tunnels stretch
And secrets boast

Two dark pits
Within the ground
Fins circle Heda
Round and round

IZAH
Under the Mountain
Where the sunless mass
The Blind Fish swims
With eyes of glass

The Blind Fish sees
Through azure haze
The Izah rests
Within its gaze

JAKA
Upon this house
Was laid a Doom
Its owners rise
From beyond the tomb

Now sunken is
A Dwarven crest
Where the Jaka lies
But can not rest

There are 10 pieces that you need scattered across the face of Norrath, each called "A Rod."

The locations are as follows:
(1) [azia] On the ocean floor in Eruds Crossing past the zombie boat where the zombie sailors hang out. (location - neg 1162, pos 2340);

Here are some video guides on the original zones. These videos are not for the revamped zones.

(2) [beza] In the underwater cave in the Everfrost plains. It is in the "house" all the way back and right in the cave, where 3 dry bones guard it in the center of the room;

(3) [caza] Lake Rathetear. Underneath the first island you see is an underwater tunnel leading to a stone tower. It's on the top floor of the tower. (You need enduring breath for this one);

(4) [Dena] Dagnor's Cauldron, right outside the entrance to Kedge Keep, at -890, -740. If you face with your back to Kedge, it is directly diagagonally left, in a corner - or you can swim straight out and down from Unrest;

(5) [Ena] Lower Guk in the Reanimated hand room. This one is the only one you need a group for, unless you're brave and kamakaze it. Warning, the floor is the same color as the rod in this room and it makes it very hard to find with the hand and the dar beating on you;

(6) [Fana] Southern Desert of Ro, northern section, in the underwater tower in the lake, at +3695, -1740, -35;

(7) [Geza] Highhold Pass, on the patio at The Tiger's Roar, at /waypoint -268, 585, -14

(8) [Heda] Qeynos Aqueducts, in the shark pit;

(9) [Izah] Neriak in the water in front of the bar called "the blind fish". The bar has 4 glass windows that are underwater, and the rod spawns right in front of those windows;

(10) [Jaka] Unrest in the water outside the right side of the house near where the the gnome spelunker is. Instead of going into the tunnel that leads to him, you go a little right of that entrance and there's a very short passage where you can find the rod.

You have fashioned the items together to create something new: Staff of the Wheel.
You have fashioned the items together to create something new: Star of Eyes.

Turn these in for your reward. (NOTE: With the recent revamp of the spell research system, the Rune rewards have each been replaced with "Shattered Rune". We need confirmation (8ish years after the spell research revamp) that this quest is still messed up)

Can be done at 16, I did, and I am not a twink
# Sep 15 2000 at 8:32 AM Rating: Default
With invis, this quest can be done in full or a good protion. I was 16 when I did the quest. Don't get me wrong I did die alot, alot, like 8 times. And I did need help for the one in Lower Guk dead side. I had to camp three hours until a group decided to camp the Goul Lord. When they did they were nice enough to full the hand, and I was able to swim in the room and grab the rod.
The hard ones
# Sep 13 2000 at 5:00 PM Rating: Default
The hardest rods to get were probably the one in Erud's crossing, the one in Oasis, the one in Lake Rathe, and the one in Lower Guk. The other ones you can pretty much get on your own.

For the sharks I brought a lev 46 cleric and a lev 45 druid. I levitated all of us and then the druid and I stood right over the water where the rod was (Loc -1162, 2340) while the cleric stood in between us and the shoreline. The cleric gave the druid her 400+hp buff and all the others she could and he buffed himself up too as well as using Spirit of Cheetah and then he dove down and pulled the sharks towards the shore. While he was being hit the cleric was healing (be sure not to let the cleric die, she/he needs to be there to rez in case of accidents) and then while the sharks were chasing the druid I dove down and got the rod. Just in case I have the bag already open so if I am being attacked I can put the wand in my bag before I die. (If you start to get attacked by 4 killer sharks you might as well not worry about dying and just worry about getting the rod, because you're going to die anyway. You might as well have the rod when you loot your body.) Oh, one more thing about this part of the quest. If you die, all you have to do is leviate over your body and use your pre-made hotkey (/corpse) while you you are floating above the water where you body is and it will summon your corpse.

For Lake Rathe and Oasis I did the same thing. I brought an enchanter who could turn into an elemental with me. When she was in elemental shape everything conned indifferent so she found where the caster was and told me where it was. As the caster is the only one who can see through invis I snuck around the other way and got the rod while I was invis. Once again, bring the cleric for rezzes.

The rod in lower guk is in the hand room, you basically have to have the group that is camping the hand room help you. There is almost always a group there, just wait there with them and then run in after they kill the hand and get the rod. Gate out immediately, the hand spawns pretty fast.

There's how I did it. I had to use a lot of people to help me. . . so if you have a lot of friends, then you're set.

Eruds crossing rod
# Aug 31 2000 at 4:56 PM Rating: Default
I'm a lvl 22 wizard. When i got the eruds crossing rod, it wasn't even near any sharks. Also, i had casted normal invisibility on myself and even though all the sharks considered scowls ready to attack, none attacked me, i even hailed 1 or 2 of them. All i did was i got on the only other peice of the sunken ship besides the mast that was out of the water, dove in and swam down and northwest, the rod was fairly close to where the sea bed levels out after the long drop.
Question
# Aug 23 2000 at 4:31 PM Rating: Default
Well I did something similar. Amazingly enough, though most of you may not believe it, I'm only level 14 and untwinked and have 9 of the 10 rods. Still looking for people to help me there. Anyway, since I'm very brave....and suicidal, not to mention lucky, I went to great lengths to get these. And for whoever said wait till a higher level, forget that. That staff is worth more to me than the runes at this point, and I will always have the staff all ready when I get that high. The Sharks while proving a nuisance, I only ever saw one at a time, peoved little trouble, and I was not invis. I got lucky and grabbed the rod my first try. Of course I died shortly after when the shark saw me finally, but then it was a simple matter of diving back in, swimming the max distance I could and still summon the corpse, the swim the hell out. Now here is my question....How do you raise Beta Neutral faction?
Sharks

Has anyone taken a druid along to harmony the sharks? This should lower their aggro radius to the point you can almost be beside them before they will aggro.

RE: Sharks

Yes. . . yesterday I took a druid along to harmony the sharks and it did not work. . . he was a level 45 druid. Also, invis vs. animals did not work either.

A bit harder...
# Aug 16 2000 at 7:37 AM Rating: Default
I went to do the sharks with my lvl 54 druid friend, I'm lvl 17,but thats not really the point. We couldn't get the rod. So I called up a lvl 59 necro from my guild and they soloed the sharks, but that... is not easy
About the reason of this quest
# Aug 14 2000 at 5:27 AM Rating: Default
Umm, just would like to point out a thing or two. One, you complain about it being tough.. well.. it should be HARDER. This is for someone who is 45-50 who CAN use the spell so he can do this quest, Not for a bounch of guys doing it for Cash. DONT DO THIS AT EARLY LVL. DO THIS WHEN YOU CAN USE THE SPELL. Very easy for a lvl 49 or 50. As for the staff, hell, you should have better than this at 20 and up. And this comes from someone who plays on a PvP only which is harder to do than a "Blue" Server. =P

Uhh..the only people who are doing this quest are either lvl 45+ Wizards who are getting ready to have Ice Comet or 40- Wizards who want the staff for the 10 int. All of the items are No drop so i really dont think anyone is doing this quest for cash...duhhh...Some people are idiots

Sorry, I agree with anonymous(8/25). This is agreat quest for lower lev Wizzy's. the +10 int on the staff is worth it alone. I am 29 and just starting it. My only wish is that I would have started it sooner. :o)

NODROP
# Aug 05 2000 at 4:23 PM Rating: Decent
Yes, the rods are nodrop. Also sulgar is beta neutral, so anything that effects beta neutral effects dulgar. Also i'm not sure but i think the box is not
NODROP like the rods, so if you only want the staff and gem you can have someone else get you the box, and wait until your level 49 to get your beta neutral up and get the runes.

Two things; one I think Mariemer did it back when the sharks did fight each other also if you go just under the surface of water you can see anything underwater but not target. Superior camo is rumored to work as is invis to animal.
Invis to Animals
# Jul 11 2000 at 9:55 PM Rating: Decent
After trying everyting to get the Erud's crossing piece, I found that my lvl52 Shaman casting 'Invis to Animals' was all it took to swim down and get it. The 3 killer sharks left us alone. Once you get the piece, swim back up, don't try to evac out! Evac will drop that Invis just like any other. =)
Great Idea
# Jul 06 2000 at 2:45 PM Rating: Decent
I also though about just snatching the rod and relcaiming the corpse later, One problem I have is that, due to the EXTREME alacrity with which the sharks kill me (usually under 5 seconds) I have yet to see the rod or get to it in time. I think I just need like a 50 warrior to draw the sharks off. Thanks for all the suggestions though
Change miniumum level please
# Jul 06 2000 at 8:08 AM Rating: Decent
Although you cannot use the runes you get from this quest until level 49, the staff of the wheel is an awesome item (+10 int) and the quest can be done at any level really, though I would recommend waiting until you are 24 and have levitate (for underwater corpse recovery, full range of teleports (for easy travelling) and invis (for obvious reasons). It is the perfect quest for a wizard in their mid twenties.
Erud's rod
# Jul 06 2000 at 8:00 AM Rating: Decent
If you don't have powerful friends, you can get the Eruds rod easily if you don't mind dying once and you are high enough level to levitate.

First beg/buy a waterstone or two from a high level mage. This is like enduring breath potion but generally free or very cheap.

Then simply go to the island near the sharks, and using /loc line yourself up so you are pointing directly west towards the loc of the rod (see main spoiler above). Bind here as you are probably going to die.

Dive in, go west along the ocean floor, just ignore the kiler sharks that will probably whup you (if not you are damn lucky. I died twice already before trying this approach), and keep a major eye out for the rod, pick it up as soon as you see it and do a /loc. Don't worry if you die with it in your hand, it will still be on your corpse. Shortly afterwards you will probably be killed by the sharks.

To recover the corpse safely if you did die, cast levitate, and lev over to the location where you died. You can then use the /cor command to retrieve you corpse without going near the sharks, even though it is on the ocean floor and you are floating above the ocean. Personally I think this is a small price to pay for the hardest rod. After all, if you do this at a low level you will lose about an hours worth of xp, which is not really that much.
Erud's Crossing Revisited
# Jul 05 2000 at 7:24 AM Rating: Decent
I figured I'd head back after the rod in the crossing last night. I mean, what the hell, I have some xp to burn. So I went dwon there, bound, got a warrior to take care of the zombies, invised, and swam on down. Sure enough 3 killer sharks were there and didn't show any signs of leaving. I thought, "Maybe they fixed it, maybe it was just a bug" WRONG! I got all the way down there and WHAM! dead in under 3 seconds. Just so happens there was a druid in the zone. I also reasoned out trying to use Invis vs Animals. I got about halfway down there this time before Jaws and his buds ripped me a second *******. My thoughts are that if this is not a bug Verant might be trying to make the Quest harder to keep lvl 20 guys from getting the staff. If you guys find a way to get in plz let me know. If you run across me in the game send me a /tell. I play on the E'ci server as Lewws Therin'Telamon. Thanks
Rod difficulty ratings at 30th level
# Jul 04 2000 at 2:04 AM Rating: Excellent
Keep in mind, I am a Human Wizard who worships Rodcet Nife, so I've got odd factions where other races or Atheists/Agnostics may be alright.

1. Erud's crossing (azia) - extremely hard to do while solo, since the sharks (4 of them) can all see any form of invisibility (Invis vs animal, camo, vs undead, etc). I suggest taking along a group of people and a high level cleric (for resses)
2. Underwater cave in Everfrost (beza) - very easy. just go invis, swim in (use an enduring breath potion, if need be), and watch out for the wandering Lich. He's red, as well as his pet, and is usually KOS to people. The "house" where the rod is has 3 iceboned skels in it. They're ultra green so don't worry about them attacking... just don't sit down and med while you're next to them.
3. Lake Rathetear (caza) - difficult, but doable while solo. Use an enduring breath potion here, since it's a VERY long swim. Almost all the goblins are red, one of them can see invis... make sure to not get near him. The goblins in the top of the tower usually don't see invis, so don't worry too much... just swing around the side and come in at the top, snag the rod and move away from the tower and gate. This one's good for that rush of adrenaline.
4. Dagnor's Cauldron (dena) - very easy. it's directly out from Unrest. Just watch out for the goblin Dwigus since he can see invis, is red, is KOS, and likes to patrol near the entrance to Unrest.
5. Lower Guk Hand room (ena) - moderate difficulty. Get a cleric or so to invis vs. undead. I had to get a guide since I didn't know the way there. Fortunately, if done at the peak time, the Hand room will be clear, since it's camped regularly. Just make sure that it's camped by calling out, first. Otherwise, it's a mess trying to get a corpse back. After the rod is retrieved, gate to safety. The run back is worse than the run to.
6. Oasis of Marr (Fana) - Moderate difficulty. If you're a horrible swimmer, use an eduring breath potion. Again, there are a bunch of goblins whom are red, one of which can see invis. Swing around again and come in at the top which is populated with goblins which normally can't see invis. Swim back out or swim away and gate. I had 2 spectres trained onto me while I was in the water. Not a fun task gating while being slashed at, I tell ya.
7. Highhold Pass (Geza) - Very easy. If you're KOS here, just invis past the guard(s) and dive into the water. The rod is in a small alcove so gating can be done in relative privacy.
8. Qeynos Aquaducts Shark pit (Heda) - Very easy. Also, if you're KOS in any part of Qeynos, just go invis and run like mad. Make sure you're invis before leaping into the shark pit. Fortunately, THESE sharks can't see invisible creatures.
9. Neriak at Blind Fish (Izah) - Moderate difficulty. Go invis and run as fast as possible towards Neriak B (commons). There's a building in the middle of town called something like "Neriak Down Under". In there, there's a bar called the "Blind Fish". Run in, grab the rod through the glass, run out, find a secluded area and gate quickly. Those of you who are Dark Elves have it easy here.
10. Unrest in the stream (Jaka) - Moderately Easy. I just ran in praying that noone trained the entire house to the zone, walked over to the stream, dove in, grabbed the rod and ran out without a scratch. On off days, trains can make this a bad experience. At 30th level, one or two creatures from the top levels of the house are blue and fairly easy to root and nuke.

Sulgar must con indifferently for you to get the box to combine the rods.

My only complaint about this quest, though, is the fact that if you're looking for just the staff of the wheel, don't expect to get any experience in the process.
RE: Rod difficulty ratings at 30th level
# Nov 21 2000 at 6:36 AM Rating: Default
Ok, here is the deal. most of the rods are easy at lvl 30 since all you really need is invisibility and to get enduring breath.

I didn't have any trouble in erud's crossing at lvl 30, and i have all of the rods except the one in lower Guk. I personally know of a guy who did this quest at lvl 10 without any friends helping him. So , knock yourself out.

Let it be known that a 52nd level Invis vs Animals __WILL__ work against the sharks in Erud's Crossing. At least, it worked for me :-)
Invisibilty
# Jul 03 2000 at 11:33 AM Rating: Decent
One thing to remember about invisibility is that some creatures see through LOWER level invisibility spells but not invisibility spells cast by a character that is nearer its level or higher level.

You should also try Invisibility Versus Animals (druid and shaman spell) to get past the sharks. This works perfectly on animals like Griffons that see through normal invisibility or camouflage.

One thing about DW Goblins is that some can be shamans that can cast See Invisible but they don't always do this.
Erud's Sharks
# Jul 02 2000 at 10:47 PM Rating: Decent
Yaldin is completely correct as far as I can tell. I've heard far too many stories of the Killer Sharks seeing through invis to discount them, but when I did it I grabbed the rod, turned around, and found out I was staring one in the face. Needless to say, I freaked out, but it didn't see through my invis (did con ready to attack though). Also, I had to try the Oasis rod twice because one saw through the invis the first time, but none did the second (the next RL day)
Getting by sharks
# Jul 02 2000 at 12:43 AM Rating: Decent
Try back another day, apparently like other NPC's, sharks de spawns after an unknown period of time and respawn, its really not that all the sharks see through invis, its that one of them does. I did it at lvl 20 with my wiz, and he got past them with invis, no problem, guess I was lucky, same is true of the DW goblins in Lake Rathe and Oasis.

Staff of the Wheel
# Jun 30 2000 at 4:27 PM Rating: Decent
Actually, with a little luck and some help in spots, this quest really isn't as hard as the rep that it gets. I was able to complete the quest by level 20, and though I died a few times doing it, the reward was well worth the risk. The Staff of the Wheel that you get from this quest if you do not complete the last step is a wonderful int item (+10 int), and though it sucks as a weapon, at level 35 currently I never enter melee with an opponent with the intent to hurt it, simply with the intent to draw some damage away from a hurt tank and give time to heal. All in all it's a wonderful quest at any level... if you can complete it.
