This quest begins with Sulgar at location is 3030, -2395, -58, in Everfrost (just into the main area of Everfrost and to the north boundary).

You say, 'Hail, Sulgar'

Sulgar says 'Hail, traveler! Would you happen to [know] the location of any of the spokes of Tarton's Wheel?'

You say, 'What is Tarton's Wheel?'

Sulgar says 'Tarton's Wheel was a device that Tarton constructed to let him travel through the planes. If you are [interested] in helping me reassemble it, I will [reward] you well.'

You say, 'What reward?'

Sulgar says 'If you bring me the [Staff of the Wheel] and the [Star of Eyes], I will reward you with a rune of frost and a rune of the astral - for personal use, of course..'

You say, 'What is the Staff of the Wheel?'

Sulgar says 'The Staff of the Wheel and the Star of Eyes are made by combining the ten spokes of Tarton's Wheel in a [wheel case].'

You say, 'What wheel case?'

Sulgar says 'I will lend you this wheel case - put the ten spokes of the wheel in it when you have collected them. I did say lend, however. I shall need the case back. Once you have constructed the Staff of the Wheel and the Star of Eyes, I will trade you them for a rune of frost and a rune of the astral.'

You receive "A glowing chest" (identifies as "Tartons Wheel Case"), a 10-slot TEMPORARY container, and a Tome of the Wheel, which reads:

THE WHEEL OF TARTON

TARTON HAD A WHEEL
THAT ONCE HE BUILT
TEN SPOKES TO WOOD
BOUND BY A STAR

TARTON HAD A WHEEL
TO ROAM THE PLANES
SHAPED TWICE BY ICE
TO GUIDE HIS WAY

TARTON HAD A WHEEL
THAT ONCE HE LOST
CLASH IN THE SKY
TO EARTH HE FELL

TARTON HAD A WHEEL
WAS SUNDERED PAST
THE PIECES SCATTERED
ACROSS THE WORLD

AZIA
In the crossing
Of the waters
Rests a ship
On its side

Drowned sailors
Swim around it
Past this ship
The Azia lies.

BEZA
In the land
Of wind and snow
This stream of water
Does not flow

Below the ice
Upon dry land
The Beza rests
Held by no hand

CAZA
In the Lake of Rathe
An island looms
It hides a treasure
In its womb

A stone tower
Protected sleeps
Those who guard it
Can not weep

DENA
A cauldron stews
But does not boil
Its edges rock
Not dirt or soil

Inside the cauldron
Lurks a door
The Dena lies
Some paces score

ENA
Once Trolls did live
Within these halls
Then vengeance struck
Their might did fall

A well of water
Upside down
The Ena rests
Yet does not drown

FANA
The tears of Marr
A pool do make
Two towers stand
Within this lake

In one tower
Guarded high
The Fana dreams
Of sleeping dry

GEZA
Upon the mountain
Through the pass
The Tiger Roars
With eyes of glass

The Tiger sees
The waters fall
Geza is held
Under its thrall

HEDA
Under this city
Upon the coast
Tunnels stretch
And secrets boast

Two dark pits
Within the ground
Fins circle Heda
Round and round

IZAH
Under the Mountain
Where the sunless mass
The Blind Fish swims
With eyes of glass

The Blind Fish sees
Through azure haze
The Izah rests
Within its gaze

JAKA
Upon this house
Was laid a Doom
Its owners rise
From beyond the tomb

Now sunken is
A Dwarven crest
Where the Jaka lies
But can not rest

There are 10 pieces that you need scattered across the face of Norrath, each called "A Rod."

The locations are as follows:
(1) [azia] On the ocean floor in Eruds Crossing past the zombie boat where the zombie sailors hang out. (location - neg 1162, pos 2340);

Here are some video guides on the original zones. These videos are not for the revamped zones.

(2) [beza] In the underwater cave in the Everfrost plains. It is in the "house" all the way back and right in the cave, where 3 dry bones guard it in the center of the room;

(3) [caza] Lake Rathetear. Underneath the first island you see is an underwater tunnel leading to a stone tower. It's on the top floor of the tower. (You need enduring breath for this one);

(4) [Dena] Dagnor's Cauldron, right outside the entrance to Kedge Keep, at -890, -740. If you face with your back to Kedge, it is directly diagagonally left, in a corner - or you can swim straight out and down from Unrest;

(5) [Ena] Lower Guk in the Reanimated hand room. This one is the only one you need a group for, unless you're brave and kamakaze it. Warning, the floor is the same color as the rod in this room and it makes it very hard to find with the hand and the dar beating on you;

(6) [Fana] Southern Desert of Ro, northern section, in the underwater tower in the lake, at +3695, -1740, -35;

(7) [Geza] Highhold Pass, on the patio at The Tiger's Roar, at /waypoint -268, 585, -14

(8) [Heda] Qeynos Aqueducts, in the shark pit;

(9) [Izah] Neriak in the water in front of the bar called "the blind fish". The bar has 4 glass windows that are underwater, and the rod spawns right in front of those windows;

(10) [Jaka] Unrest in the water outside the right side of the house near where the the gnome spelunker is. Instead of going into the tunnel that leads to him, you go a little right of that entrance and there's a very short passage where you can find the rod.

You have fashioned the items together to create something new: Staff of the Wheel.
You have fashioned the items together to create something new: Star of Eyes.

Turn these in for your reward. (NOTE: With the recent revamp of the spell research system, the Rune rewards have each been replaced with "Shattered Rune". We need confirmation (8ish years after the spell research revamp) that this quest is still messed up)

Shattered Rune - cannot combine

I can confirm that as of June 25 2022 the Shattered Runes are not combinable in either a Spell Research Kit or a Lexicon (old research container). The Lexicon does not even have a "combine" button any more. Merchants are not interested in buying the runes either. The runes do not have the tradeskill flag so it seems unlikely they they can be used in any way. Tested on Yelinak TLP server, classic era.

The video guide for the Jaka Rod is wrong; at least for the TLPs in Classic. The Rod is actually found in the little cubby area across from the Spelunkers Cave, in a tunnel that is up towards the ceiling, and going towards the gazebo. Brewall's Maps has it properly marked.

Had issues finding it on Mangler; not sure if it moves to the Spelunkers Cave at some future expansion.

Well, the Videoguide was made for the original zones, not for the new/revamped zones. Sorry for that ;-).

Updated thanks, the old location was probably still referencing the pre-redesigned Highpass.

I found the Geza Rod on the patio at Tiger's Roar Inn. You have to go thru the Inn to get to the porch.

Very sad that this is all broken. It's not a very hard quest, especially with help like Necro DMF and a group Bard in PoK w 2min Selo's. In 2014 live EQ (Tunare server) not only does the quest not result in the ice comet spell or useable research items, but once you buy Ice Comet from the PoK Wizard 26-50 vendor, the 43 nuke Conflagration does more damage for less mana. FYI the tome and the runes are worth 0cp to vendors and 0 tribute. There's no coin or faction, just miniscule exp for the hand in.

Now what was once the pinnacle of Wizard spells can't be quested, is vendor sold and is another of the 3 pages of nukes that will never be used. The only thing good about the spell is it still has the animation of literally a comet of ice falling from the sky.

Maybe these will help someone on a time locked or retro server. Here are the map entries for all but the Lower Guk rod, which is in the Hand Room:

When spell research was revamped a while ago, they likely replaced the old runes this used to give with the shattered runes, which are probably only good to sell for cash (speaking of which, someone please upload one to Lucy). If you don't receive the spell directly for completing the quest, I doubt this quest is good for anything other than a minor item and small cash reward these days. Someone please confirm either way...

You have fashioned the items together to create something new: Staff of the Wheel.
You have fashioned the items together to create something new: Star of Eyes.

Didn't log further as I'm keeping the staff for now ;P

The first time I did this quest I thought I remembered invis dropping on the two deepwater goblin towers when I picked up the rods. Now the only real hard rod is lower guk especially since no one is there now, ever.

On another note, how exactly does a 10/100 rod with 10 int, 10 hps, and 10 mana help Tarton travel through the planes? Much the same as how did 1/4th of our epic staff help a lone wizard almost obliterate Karnor's Castle single handed? The joys of being a mob and cheating I suppose...

Location of Rod in South Ro

The loc of the rod that is now in South Ro is pos 3697, neg 1739, neg 35. It is in the underwater tower in the lake.
Go to South Ro Now

Just finished this quest. Took me a couple of hours, mostly because I do not know my way around Upper and Lower Guk at all, and wandered for a while. Very simple task, an enduring breath item or spell is recommeded, though. Please note that the Oasis of Marr is no longer in the game, but the piece from there can be found in the northern section of South Ro. There is still a lake with a tower on it, and the underwater tower is still in the lake as well. Happy hunting ^_^ (70 Shaman, Quellious Server)

I must be an idiot or something because I've been looking for the one in Qeynos Aquadects for like 1.5 hours now. Anyone have a better tip than what's already been given?

Once you zone into the Aqueducts, follow the wall on your LEFT side all the way past the large pool of water. You will then go through a secret wall. Follow this along your RIGHT side as you go down the ramp and all the way until you get to another pool of water where there are 2 sharks. The piece is on the floor in the pool.

You will pass 3 rooms with smugglers before you reach the room with the sharks.

To get to the "hand room" you go down the long hall that leads to the ghoul lord's throneroom and it's across the hall from the Archmagi room. Heh jump UP into the bottom of the water and swim up and it should be there with (at least when I found it) one other normal mob. You'll understand that part about the water when you get to the room.
Staff of wheel quest
# Feb 01 2004 at 10:59 AM Rating: Decent

Just finished the staff quest at level 32. Not a bad quest. I recommend to do it before u hit level 10 if you want to get the staff without hassle. But i did learn many capabilities while trying to get the staff . Mainly using stealth and speed to get items. For lower guk i had good faction w the upper guk froglok so bound to lower guk zone then stripped all my gear except potions of IVS. Buffed up with all spells including SoW before i gated to bind point. Then made a go for the hand room. Map was essential as i got lost a number of times. Found the waterfall swam up hand and dar knight were up but i saw the rod sittinng on the floor to the right , picked it up swam back down and gated. I was only person in dungeon (mac server =) )Most of the other rods were easy to get . Will need enduring breath for several and Aqua goblins didnt see thru my invis. I did die in Eruds crossing while levitating over water by sharks. But rod is close to the island so CR wasnt as bad as it could be. success at an early level
# Dec 25 2003 at 8:38 PM Rating: Decent
I just finished this quest at Lv 9. I did it this early for a specific reason. At this Level, i didn't have to worry about a return trip. I swam into the area, grabbed the rod just as the skeleton hacked my head off. The real beauty of doing this quest this early is that when I respawned, I still had all my equiptment, and I lost no experience. When all is said and done, I'm a Level 9 wizard with a +10 int staff.

I do want to thank the Riders of Norrath for their many buffs, and Wrathian for his help with Lower Guk. That one, I tried to follow him, but i got wacked way too early. He dragged my corpse to the rod and rez'ed me. Without his help, that one would have been impossible.

still dont know if the star thingie is worth it
Wow!!! i did it

Quest
# Aug 16 2003 at 11:43 PM Rating: Decent
The simplicity of this quest is definately worth the reward it yeilds, not many staffs add 10 to int. Unless you want to use the stereotypical Wizard gear, ie, a dagger that looks like it was meant for an assassin lawn gnome, it looks pretty cool I think. The rods all look like burritos, so they're not hard to locate on the ground, just get a shaman to make you a 5-dose IVU potion, dont waste any charges, and you're in for an easy quest )
Hand, no more kills for you
# Jul 16 2003 at 1:09 AM Rating: Default
Well, this isn't posted anywhere.

The reanimated hand in Guk DOES NOT see through regular Invis. Thats right. I went in expecting to die, got to the room, con'd the hand, was KoS. IvU wore off, so i decided to cast regular for no real reason. I walked up, hugged the hand, picked up the rod and gated.

5th rod down.
dmg/delay
# Mar 06 2003 at 12:03 AM Rating: Default
AWESOME dmg/delay ratio 8) wonder what the dmg bonus would be if it was 2hb and tank useable
RE: dmg/delay
# May 07 2003 at 6:03 AM Rating: Decent
HEHE you are joking, right?
RE: dmg/delay
# Jun 01 2003 at 11:03 PM Rating: Decent
No, I don't think he is joking.

Melee classes get damage bonuses for various things. One of those things is Delay. The bigger the delay, the bigger the dmg bonus. It wouldn't be enough to make it a viable weapon still. DPS would still be low, but would be an interesting hit.

I did see a table on dmg bonuses once. Castersrealm maybe.
