Councilman Taldarius is located at the top of the elevator in the Library in the Plane of Knowledge.

You say, 'Hail, Councilman Taldarius'

Councilman Taldarius regards you, and grins. 'Greetings, ______. I am Councilman Taldarius, mighty Paladin of Mithaniel Marr and Guardian of the City of Tanaan! If you cannot find what you are looking for here in the Myrist library, I most certainly can add it to my list of things to look for in the Planes. Unfortunately, I am quite busy at the moment, planning my next trip to the Elemental Planes. I believe my aid may have some tasks he could use help with. That is, if you are skilled enough.'

You must complete the Aid Grimel series of tradeskill grandmaster quests. At the end of the previous quest (the last quest in the series), Aid Grimel mentioned that you may want to ask the councilman about the signet.

You say, 'What about the Marked Runed Signet?'

Councilman Taldarius says 'I see you have helped Grimel immensely. He would not have given up his signet very easily. I cannot let him deprive himself of such a valuable tool. If you were to do a task for me I would grant you something I picked up in the Planes. Are you interested in the task?'

You say, 'I am interested in the task.'

Councilman Taldarius says 'Very well ______. I warn you I will not grant this without proof that you possess a valiant spirit. You may have the trust of my aid but I still require a noble deed. Through research done by the council they have discovered something called a Hope Stone that exists in the Elemental Planes. Bring me one of these stones and the signet of Grimel. Fear not I shall reward you well.'

Give him the Marked Runed Signet and a Hope Stone, which is a rare drop in any of the elemental planes.

Councilman Taldarius says 'Wonderful! You have proven yourself as both a Master of the Trade as well as a valiant spirit. Take this and may it server you well! If this signet does not suffice, bring it back to me and i will exchange it for one more attuned to your needs.'

You gain experience!!

You can swap between the signets by handing them back to Councilman Taldarius.

Finished this yesterday morning on Al'Kabor, the Macintosh server.

After 8 failures on the tailoring (Aid Grimel #5), I finally succeeded on attempt #9 and then breezed through the remaining 3 earrings.

I start rehab on my wrists tomorrow........ ;-)

I realize that to complete this quest one must be flagged for EP's. My question is, does the new alternate backflagging system count towards being able to complete this quest. I am alt flagged for Fire, Air, and soon to be Sol Ro, just wondering if i will be able to complete up to the final quest with these flags, or will i need to get the real flags?

I cannot say for certain, by I STRONGLY suspect you cannot. Alt flagging does not update your Inticate Wooden Figurine, and I think you will find the same to be true here.

No you can not get both. I personally tried all of the following.
1. Have Signet of the Arcane and second to last earring, attempt to turn it in with Hope stone and he spits them back.
2. Turn in Arcane for Might, attempt to turn in second to last with hope stone and he spits them back.
3. Leave Might on corpse, attempt to turn in second to last with hope stone and he spits them back.
4. Leave might on that same corpse for a week allowing it to go to Shadowrest, attempt to turn in second to last with hope stone and you guessed it! he spits them back.
Btw step 4 I even tried before and after "calling" the corpse in Shadowrest.

Clearly they coded it so you can not get both Arcane and Might at the same time.

A lot of people will want both earrings at the end of this quest (the Signet of the Arcane and the Signet of Might). You have to be careful though that when handing items in on a quest for a lore item you already possess, the npc takes the items without reward.

Does anyone know which earring you should have on you when handing the items in for the second?

Edit:
Sadly i've just discovered you cannot possess both the final two earrings, so this isn't a concern. *deep sigh*. Having one of the two final earrings along with the second to last is still a good set though :)

Just a side note on all the earrings they have equal hp/mana/AND endurance looks like all the screenshots are old and dont show the endurance stat, not that many classes care about endurance heh I can never use all 4k+ of mine.

hmmm, was trying to edit my post...but cant figure if that is an option...one more question, are the tradeskill levels (220 for smithing) spoke of Required? or merely reccommended for this quest?

The tradeskill levels are required. Aid Grimel will laugh at you (literally) and refuse to give you the quest or the no-drop components you need to do the combines if your skill is below 220 unmodified.

I did my final turn in tonight, /cheer! When I did the turn in, part of the councilman's closing remark was "If this signet does not suffice, bring it back to me and I will exchange it for one more attuned to your needs."

I'm not quite ready to take chances with this piece so I didn't try it but it sounds like this was for bards and other melee who might enjoy the +mana and +mana regen.

It also sounds like I could hand it in, get the signet of might and do the quest over again so that I could have a signet of might in one ear and a signet of arcane in the other. I'm just crazy enough to try this but it will be after a short break from tradeskilling. =)

Recent change.

http://mboards.eqtraders.com/eq/showthread.php?p=122465

just checking, you're not on test?

Note that Maddoc makes this very clear comment:
You will NOT be able to obtain both earrings, so don't try

Anyway, once you have the required flags and tradeskills, running through it again is pretty easy, just expensive.

You can't turn it in for a second one. It is Lore....but +17stats,+12 saves,115hp/mana and regen +5 isn't so bad for the "off ear" is it? Smiley: wink

Perhaps it is like the solstice earing and druids turn in get other one... then do quest over and have both.. /shrug.. would have to take a chance at turning it in first.. then see what you got..

Most of the quest items can be bought in bazaar
# Apr 26 2004 at 3:46 PM Rating: Excellent
Once you get your skill to the required level AND get the necessary flags...

You can buy every component for this quest except for the 3 sacred waters (drops in PoV) and the hopestone. Both of these are pretty hard to come by.

You can buy your way up to the required skill level in almost all tradeskills.

For smithing: You can buy your way to 155 with purely storebought items. Then you can get to 188 with fine plate armor (all storebought items plus leather padding, you can get leather padding for 20-30PP). Then you make enchanted velium bits to get the rest of the way there (all storebought items except for small pieces of velium, you can get small peices of velium for 20-40 plat if you aren't in a terrible hurry). With a 5% smithing modifier, you can do sheets of ethereal metal to get to 211 and 212. With a 10% mod you can use ethereal sheets of metal to skill up from 200-212. If you have a 15% mod you can use etheral sheets of metal from 192-212. You can make ethereal sheets of metal with all storebought items except for bricks of ethereal energy, which should be available for between 10 and 20PP in bazaar if you are patient.

None of the components for the smithing part of the quest are rare. You should be able to buy all the components for under 1K. As a matter of fact you can use the first portion of this quest (cleansed breastplate) to get yourself to 227 for next to nothing, you can use the other parts of this quest to skill up as well if you want to (I preferred to spend a lot of time getting XP and plat in BoT rather than try to farm Terris Thule's lair (try getting an XP group to go there... sheesh)).

For Brewing: You can buy your way to 248 with storebought items with minotaur hero brew.

The items for the brewing portion of the quest are not rare you can buy them all in bazaar for next to nothing. At this point you really shouldn't care about skilling up your brewing.

For Jewelcraft: You can buy your way to 250 with storebought items.

The components for this quest are almost all storebought or very common in bazaar.

For Pottery: You can buy your way to 199 with storebought items. Then you can make Blue ceramic bands to 202 with all storebought items except for celestial essence (which is super cheap and easy to make), Black cermaic bands to 211 with celestial essence, Unfired planar stein to 216 (if you want to merchant mine for the tainted planar essence), Opal encrusted stein or unfired green ceramic bands to 222 with celestial essence. Of course if you are in a hurry, just do opal encrusted stiens after you hit 199 with the casserole dishes, its not very expensive... all things considered.

None of the components for this portion of the quest are very expensive... its just the sacred waters that are tough to get.

Tailoring: you can buy your way to 76 with storebought items then you start with the wu's armor (you can do cured silk, bolas, and crystalline silk armor in between if you want to save a little plat). Wu's armor will take you to 158 but you will need to buy silk (you can probably buy it for about 5 PP if you are patient, 10PP if you are not). Then I would move into LoY ribbons until 187 (if you have a forager it makes this part much cheaper but otherwise, but you can still buy the foraged component for about 20-30PP if you are patient). I would do enough acrylia studded armor to get to get one skill-up to 188 and then you have to decide if you want to blow a couple of hundred grnad on making celestial solstice robes or if you want to farm velious furs (both will drive you nuts and probably break yor bank). If you have a 5% modifier, you can get skill-up 211 and 212 with ethereal silk swatch or cured ethereal energy. If you have a 15% modifier, then you can get skill up 192 to 212 with ethereal silk swatch or cured ethereal energy. You can merchant mine the strands of ethereal energy for under 2PP each.

I would recommend getting this skill as high as you can because there is one component that while droppable is rare enough to command prices of 20K+ (obsidianwood sap...and you need 3 of them to ATTEMPT a combine).

Fletching: You can buy your way to 202 and then I would probably do shadow tipped acrylia arrows, you will need small bricks of acrylia (50-75PP) and chunks of condensed shadow (50-75PP) the rest of the way.

I would get my skill pretty high in this as well if it wasn't too much of a PITA (acrylia tipped arrows can get expensive if there are a lot of people trying to skill up at the same time). Some of the components seem to command high prices in bazaar (10K+).

Baking: You can buy your way to 191 then I just carried a collapsable spit with me everywhere along with a bunch of ingredients. Sometimes I merchant mine for ingredients. You need to know more recipes but its pretty cheap and easy.

The components for this portion of the quest are all usually available in bazaar and they are usually all very cheap.

EDIT: All prices are just prices I have observed but because tradeskill components are consumed, there is always SOME demand so people will farm the components. The prices I have seen (I think) reflects the price lowest price at which a significant number of people are willing to farm the components and the highest price a significant number of people are willing to pay if they know they will have to buy hundreds if not thousands of that component before they say "frook it" and just farm the items themselves. Also some of these components are farmable in XP groups, depending on your level.

Edit 2: If you REALLY want to know if you can do this, try and get yourself to 220 in either tailoring or smithing. If you can get yourself to 220 in either of these 2 skills, then just remember that you still have 6 other tradeskills to get to that level (and tailoring is tougher than smithing and fletching isn't that much easier, the rest are pretty easy). If you have your Blessed Coldain Prayer Shawl, think of everything you had to go through to get it, then multiply the PITA factor by 10 and you will begin to approach how much work is required to complete this quest.

Tried to MQ hope stone (should have read about it more). I dont think it will work unless the stones holder passes the tradeskills check too. The councilman ate my earring and spat out the other guys hope stone. Sooo sad. Really I heard that it could be MQ'd but I dunno. Anyway to cut a long story short I went scurrying off to PoF to solo my behind off after a stone of my own. Finally got summonned to PoE where some friends gave me one. Ran back to the NPC, handed in stone, got earring.
So like most NPC's he will hold things for you. Glad I got in before patch. Glad I didn't have to grovel to a GM for a refund.

With the Planes of Power expansion, a new General AA (available at level 51) was introduced for all classes called "New Tanaan Craft Mastery." Each purchase of this allows you to take an additional one of the seven generally available tradeskills over the 200 skill cap (up to a maximum of 250). You may purchase six levels of this in total.

Actually, NTCM was snuck in about a week prior to PoP, so just having Luclin will allow you to get multiple trades past 200. Not like this matters since nearly everyone has both.

MQs: ONLY the Brewing part is MQable. And since the requirement is checked again on the LAST STEP, if you do not meet the requirements then, you will STILL need to get Smithing to 220, unmodified.

I recall hearing that Councilman Taldarius will not accept single items, but even if it can be MQed you need to have 220 or higher in the required tradeskills as well as have all the required flags since the requirements are checked again.

The Hope Stone cannot be MQed for this quest (the NPC checks for both, and will make some comment about one of these items handed in by itself as being "useless alone"). The Hope Stone CAN be MQed for the much less impressive Secrets of the Planes quest, however.

Has anyone tried as a Paladin, to see for SURE which you get? Most would consider a Paladin as a Melee, but they are a hybrid and get spells. It would only make sense to "us" for it to be the "MIGHT", but we aren't Verant. Anyone know without a doubt which one? before I start this thing?

Yes it will. You just dont do the final quest and keep the marked signet. Regen 5 on that + the other completed quest earring.
bards

And if your a bard you get sh*t on with the pure melee version~
RE: bards
# Nov 27 2003 at 7:51 AM Rating: Decent
yep, sucks to be a bard...always getting the melee version instead of the FT :(
I would definitely go with the arcane if I could 'cause 150 mana > 15 hp and FT is awesome...sure the atk would be nice, but I'll take FT over regen any day (more mana + FT = more/faster fading memories which is really what I use my mana for, not charming) and 'mana song' is better regen than anything else already
RE: bards
# May 08 2003 at 6:52 PM Rating: Default
To be honest, it is a tossup for me which is better (for a bard). Extra regen (HP OR mana) is always nice. extra attack (might) would probably come into play more often than extra mana regen, though, since we don't use that much mana unless charm kiting. On the other hand, our primary purpose is NOT generally to add melee DPS to a group.

On the whole, though, I would go for the Might, simply because the (few) extra HP (and HP regen) seems more useful than the extra mana and mana regen.

The pure melee version is BETTER. Most casters would prefer the signet of might over the signet of the arcane
RE: bards
# Feb 24 2004 at 4:19 AM Rating: Default
You have got to be kidding Dalarek.

What Caster would want Aura of Bravery over Flowing thought III, Preservation of Xegony, and 150 mana? So you get +15 more hitoints with the Signet of Might and 8% dodge...so what? Look what you LOSE by taking the Might over Arcane...

I'm sorry, but you must not play a caster if you would make that choice. If you do, I'm sorry, you'll eventually learn.
RE: bards
# Aug 09 2004 at 6:42 AM Rating: Good
I am a caster and would prefer the melee version I have preservation of xegony on other items, and as for FT3, well lets just say I passed the FT15 limit a long time ago. Therefore the extra hp and dodge modifier are to my advantage but the effects on the caster version do nothing for me at all. Conclusion the melee version is better for this caster.

No, the reward is based on your class.... if you are a caster, priest, or hybrid, you get signet of the arcane... Pure Melee's get the signet of might.
