Aid Grimel is located at the top of the elevator in the Library in the Plane of Knowledge. Before you hail him, you must be flagged for the Plane of Fire by killing Solusek Ro. You must also have an unmodified minimum skill >= 220 in tailoring.

At the end of the previous quest, Aid Grimel asked whether you were skilled with the needle.

You say, 'I am skilled with the needle.'

Aid Grimel says 'I appreciate the help ______. I need a new tunic made for Councilman Taldarius. Last trip through the Plane of Disease, one of those flies spit mucus on him and it dripped through his armor seams! The result was a gooey mess that ate away all the leather underneath. It was a blessing he was wearing something under all that metal! Combine three Firesilk Swatches, a Vial of Purified Mana, an Emblem of Fire, a Firestrand Curing Agent, a Tunic Pattern and the signet. Bring it to me when you have completed it.'

Give Aid Grimel the resulting Fire Undergarment Tunic (trivial > 300).

Aid Grimel inspects the tunic. 'Good work ______. This will definitely serve Councilman Taldarius well. Here take this! If you have skills with a fletching knife I may have a job for you to do.'

Just managed to make the undertunic with 253 skill with 5% GM tailoring needle to take it to 265 skill. I had failed at the first try at 242 skill.

Just 2 more parts to go, sad that the drops I am getting from raiding are now way more powerful that this. I refuse to give up tho :)

Well, I'm now at 201 and let me just say that if you want to up your tailoring and your not 150+, don't even bother unless you have the mother of all patience. 188-193 was 160 combines for me. Anyone that uses the Flawless + Acrylia Boning recipe knows how hard it is to farm this stuff. Now a days, it's rare to find this stuff in the bazaar (on Veeshan anyways).

I'm sitting at over 400 combines and only at 201.... I got another 180 Flawless hides, gonna farm the ore and hopefully get to 220.

But Maxium, it's a lot easier to do the combine if you get your skill higher, say 250.

F*CK THAT!!! I'd rather farm the spiders in PoFire than farm more hides and ore.... I'd rather fail 9 times than keep going....

I notice that the quest (as of this typing) lists the Tower of Solusek Ro as a related zone and Solusek Ro as a related creature.

It appears to me you can do the Tailoring Quest wihtout ever setting foot into the Tower.

I am curious as to how or why the zone and creature are related? Anyone help me here?

And by the way -- I found that the new DoN trade skill tasks/quests (cultural) were my saving grace on getting my skill up to 220.

Each part of the quest requires specific flags as well as tradeskills. A great list of the flags and skills required for each part of the quest is available here: http://www.eqtraders.com/articles/article_page.php?article=q57&menustr=120055000000.

How to get to 220?
# Mar 17 2005 at 4:57 AM Rating: Decent
How in the holy hell did you get your skills up to 220+? I'm sitting at 175 right now, farming day in and day out for Rockhopper hides and Acrylia Ore. I have over 700 leather paddings from farming, and I have done over 300 combines of superb, I got 4 skill ups in a 73 sitting. WTF? There has got to be any easier way to do this, even if it is costly. Farming for a week and getting 4 skill ups is not what I call tradeskilling.

By the time I get to 188 and switch to flawless, I'll have around 400 flawless hides. =/

Just want to add I was at 220 skill with the akheva tailoring mod that gives 15% tailoring skill and it took 3 combines for me to make it. Yet I know a friend of mine who just got 220 and used geerlok to succeed the first combine. A very random recipie. :/...

I believe you'll find the same to be true with pretty much any recipe.

I was at 159+5% tailoring when I did 6th shawl combine (triv ~208) and I got it on my second try. I've heard of people doing the same (158 is when you have to switch to the high-farming recipes and the like, and when alot of people quit) and failing 7 times in a row before they got it. EQ has a very sketchy Random Number Generator.

Just done mine....after failing 7 times on tunic combine! After camping saps and buying a few was worth it tho!

Doing this one now, failed 3x so far on the combine, it takes me 6+ hours in a group at GIB to get 2-3 saps on a good day. The only good part about this damn thing is for once, farming the drop you need nets you decent exp. Thank god you dont have to farm greens all day for this, I think I would commit suicide.
Fail rate

Failed 3 times on max skill. After all the time and effort just to get skills up not to mention the 18aa the combine is Sony way of showing that tradeskillers dont mean alot. With all the pop armor that leaves tradeskills near reduntant the only thing keeping me going is that it is too late to stop.

To make the saps so hard to get and the fail rate so high at max skill is just stupid.

Done without flag?

I'm curious if this quest could be done without first defeating Sol Ro. Unlike previous grimel quests, he does not give you a vital combine item when saying you're skilled with a needle. Does anyone know if he would simply eat a completed Fire Undergarment Tunic without the SolRo flag?

I believe you could make it, but handing it in would be another thing... As least you could be ready for the day that you get flagged.

Note first that this is probably the hardest combine in the quest. Even with max skill, the fail rate is appreciable. Worse yet, the sap is very rare ... and the Emblem is not returned upon failure, which gets expensive quickly. Thankfully, the Signet *is* returned upon failure, so this quest only tests your commitment, not your sanity.

Just failed my sixth combine at max skill!
Believe me, it IS testing my sanity!
Spend more than 300K on saps atm.

Oh I'd say it tests both your commitment AND your sanity hehe.
Considering ive failed 3 times on this step and since im a pure melee class I have to try and get people to help me pharm the saps cause I cant solo it makes this a true test of will.

Whats sad is that you will probably upgrade in plane of time.

Perhaps there should be an augment for just this item. After all the work on tradeskills its kinda lame to have to bank it at some point.

Saps are also ridiculously rare. Though I have gotten 2 off of one spider once. I had spent 3 days there and seen none until that time.
