You say, 'Hail, Grennik Neltrin'

Grennik Neltrin says 'Hello. Have you been exploring the island? I came here to discover the secrets of the Broken Skull trolls but I have yet to even explore the island. Rumors that their high priest Nadox held the power to cure any disease have been drifting around Norrath for some time. I've come to see if the rumors are true. Unfortunately the island is much more dangerous than I had imagined and I haven't found anything useful. If you find anything having to do with the troll High Priest, please bring it to me.'

  • Combine a Blackened Vial, Broken Skull Clan Blood and Gunthak Gulf Water in a brew barrel to make a Black Potion (no fail).
  • Combine the Black Potion with some Pure Blood (again in a brew barrel) to make a Glowing Black Potion (no-fail).

Upon handing the potion to Grennik:

You gain experience!!

Grennik Neltrin holds the vial carefully between her fingers as she spins it slowly in the light. 'Yes I believe the potion is complete now. Of course we can never be certain until one of us drinks it. Since you prepared it would stand to reason for you to try it.'

She lifts the dark potion towards ______ and ______ reaches out and takes it from her. ______ takes a deep breath and brings the potion to his lips. The smell nearly makes him faint, but he regains his composure and swallows it in one giant gulp.

You are suddenly filled with dark warmth as the potion slides down into your stomach. You can almost sense it invading your body, battling with your defenses. You stomach turns as the venom and blood mixes in your stomach and you fight the urge to pass out. You focus all of your energy on combating the poison inside you and your body begins to turn the venom. Eventually the poison grows silent inside you and only a slight warmth is left in its place. You have conquered the poison.'

Clerics and Druids receive the Spell: Pure Blood while Shaman receive the Spell: Blood of Nadox.

Very quick and easy quest
# Nov 02 2008 at 12:42 AM Rating: Decent

65 druid/65 necro duo'd this in about 30 minutes total. A bit of AA exp, and quite a bit of AA exp on turn-in. The foraging took 3 tries, and no more than 10 - 12 kills on each type of mob in Crypt of Nadox to get the proper components to drop.

The brew barrel is right next to the quest turn-in, making this a very easy quest overall (just Succor as a Druid when you're done in Nadox and you're right there).
Foraged Gunthak Gulf Water

If you can forage then just go to Gulf of Gunthak and forage the Gunthak Gulf Water. I probrably foraged about 3 times before this popped up. :)

Decided to this quest with my 66 shaman and 70 beastlord since i have rog friend that needs help with epic. I read the writeup posted by Anexkhan and followed it.

It took me 1 hour 26 minutes from killing the first mob to looting the last drop, i also got loot worth 1100pp along the way. It´s a great spell to have and btw as some stated you don´t need any brewing skills at all to do the combines.

Obtaining the quest items is very slow and aggravating. I finally got the blackened vial from a Broken Skull initiate after about 10 hours of farming. (non-continuous). I set up camp in the far corner of the sand room and single-pulled initiates and the odd roaming Furious Blackhand. I am a 58 shaman and was able to solo. Most of the Mobs conned light blue with an occasional dark blue adherent. You should definitely get Virtue before attempting this. The mobs hit for a cummulative 185 - 250 per turn.

Fortunately, the trolls have a very low agro radius. My technique for killing them started with casting root, slow, cripple, poison dot, disease dot, cold direct damage then let pet whack until root breaks and join in and beat on the troll while hurling direct damage spells. I always had gate loaded for those times when I did aggro a second mob or when I couldn't break the gate cycle of the adherent and was running out of mana.

Adherents will gate at about 20% and return with 33% health. As a Barbarian Shaman, I was able to use slam to break up their gate spell. When they return from the gate, they do not bring friends.

Furious and Vehement Blackhands reside in the Courtyard. You can kill them and move around the room as you polish them off or set up camp in one of the alcoves. As of yet, I have not gotten the broken skull blood or the pure blood.

The plus side is the trolls drops rubicite ore, nilitim's pages, various words, and some nice trinkets.

As some of the other posts say, you can get to the zone via the lava road, climb the wall on the right just past the bridge. You will need invisibility on unless you want to fight the fire elementals and the troll miner at the top of the wall.

In case folks are still doing this quest, this map may help
The "X" inside each square is approximately where I set up to camp the components.
Could thes spells be obtained by research please?

Tried to collect the quest items for days but no luck.
So I am wondering if the spells could be made by research skills,
and if so, what would be the required items/scrolls/runes please?
Thanks in advance.

I know this is a bit late of a response, but any quest is easy if you're bringing toons that are 18 levels above what it was reccommended for. As a trio with a 56 SK, 51 Shaman, 52 Rogue, the kills were relatively easy, but the drop rate is low enough for all the components that we were there for 6 hours, and I've got everything except the Pure Blood from the Luggalds.

I got this with my 56 druid (he was around 50-52 during the time I spent soloing this quest). I spent a lot of time in a clear, long hallway in Nadox (near the normal ent..not the lava ent). The spell is great, too.
5 Hours Wasted
# Jun 20 2006 at 9:36 AM Rating: Decent
I started this quest 2 days ago, on the first day i went inbetween the vehement/furious camp and the initiate/adherent 1. Spent 5 hours there and cleared each one about 6 times. NO DROPS. Came back the next day killed 2 mobs at each camp and got both drops within those 4 mobs so it is ALL RANDOM DROPS.
completed

I did this quest this morning. Start to finish about 2hrs. I am a 67 shaman who had procrastinated getting this spell forever. Killed everything near fort w/ pet for about 30mins and got water. Killed llugald initiates for about 30min in nadox and got pure blood. Killed furious and vehement in nadox for about 30min and got skull clan blood. Killed initiates in nadox for another 30mins and got vial. Nice xp for the quest and the spell is well worth the time spent.

not no fail combine!!
# Feb 05 2006 at 8:54 PM Rating: Decent
Just did these combines with my cleric. Her skill was brewing (8). She got 2 skill ups on these combines, so definitely NOT no-fail. Would recommend you get to at least 20 to be safe. :)

Thanks to Kori & Phil for helping me get the parts for this spell. *hugs*

no fails trivial at 15 so you can raise your skills up to that

So which one did you fail? You do realize that no fail is not the same thing as zero trivial?

You can get skillups off of a no-fail combine, you just cannot fail to make the item. Silk threads and swatches would be good examples.

Specifically, anything with a trivial of 15 (I don't think anything trivials below 15) is a no-fail recipe.

Minor correction

Finally finished this quest with my shaman, thanks to Anexkahn for the great writeup. One correction though: the Black Potion combine is NOT Trivial 71. I did it with a Brewing skill of 21 and got a trivial message. I suspect it's no fail like Alla's writeup says (eqtraders says no fail also).

Very useful spell to have since Blood of Nadox is groupversion, not only single version as the clr and dru spell. Can be the difference between success or failure when killing Grummus in Decay. Also is said to be useful for the Rogue epic 1.5.

Got my last 2 pieces for the spell yesterday following Anexkhans excellent instructions soloing my lvl 56 shm.

I used the passage way camp to get the pureblood. I managed to single pull the luggard guards standing outside passage with pet. Luggards conned db, but takes long time to kill.

Used pet with weapons, my 2 best dis dots and 2 best pois dots and cripple (and turgur's of course) and then went in and attacked. Had to recast dots, also had to heal myself 2-3 during each fight and ended up at 40-50% health and mana. Also used a wrist clicky with DD Winter's roar. I was lucky and got pure blood from the 3d one. Got 8% exp too.

Bring a friend to speed it up. Medding up took too long to be worth it. And an add would have killed me.

Both combines are no fail.

How do you know to brew these particular items together to give to her? The quest text shown just has her asking for individual items. If you give her, say, just a blackened vial, does she say more?

Sure, I could just follow the spoiler instructions and get the spell, but I prefer to actually go through the story dialogs to get more immersion into the game world, so I like to know how my character is supposed to learn what to do. (I have the same problem with a lot of quest writeups.)

Several scrolls (5 iirc) drop in Nadox and these scrolls tell you how/what to combine.

In general, many quests have a similiar way of getting figured out. Scrolls/pages/books from mobs and quest text from talking to the NPCs explain what has to be done, though they are often not very specific and some trial and error is required for completion. Tradeskillers figure out combines in much the same way.

Was running across the bay from the Lighthouse to the shoreline in Gunthak on my way to Nadox when I hit my "foraging" hotbutton by chance and foraged Gunthak Gulf Water on my level 59 Druid with about a 157+ foraging skill. Will keep trying again each time I go there to see how often it occurs.

For me it was on the 2nd successful forage with 167 skill. Not too bad.

Hiya :) Just a question, but Is "Vial of Blackened Blood" the same as the blackened Vial? If not does anyone know what its used for I got it in Nadox one night and thought it went to this quest. Also where does the blood drop cause I've never seen one drop in Nadox while I was there. Thanks :)

The Vial of Blackened Blood is NOT the same as a Blackened Vial. The Vial of Blackened Blood is simply vendor trash (you get 20p or so from it, I think).

As for the Blackened Vial, hunt by the nautilus room, and kill the Broken Skull Adherents and Initiates (Also kill Dulein Gedasai if you can pull him w/o too many others, he drops https://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=19249 commonly, https://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=19329 rarely, and supposedly https://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=19983 althought I've NEVER seen him drop the FT1 shawl in hundreds of kills. )

Did this recently in one day (59 druid duoing with a 65 BL), about 2 hours worth of work (I had already foraged the Gulf Water, and about 10 others of them before). This spell is very useful, and very nice on those Grummus raids :). Also, I was surpised at the amount of XP it gave me... a whopping 4 (almost 5) % regular xp at 59. Most quests dont give xp worth anything, but this was a pleasant surprise.

I guess we had a good night...a small group of us took the spot on the west side of the bridge (opposite the common "safe spot") and pulled from the main luggald room. I'd say we got a total of about 6 drops in only a couple hours. There were enough for the 3 of us wanting them, and others who were hoping for drops from other groups...they said they'd been there all day with no luck.

Good XP for this Quest

Completed this quest today as a level 63 shaman, and got 1 blue of regular Xp upon completion. Did all the parts solo, except the Pure Blood part - had a 61 druid help, as he was doing the quest also.

For those who are unsure about the quest, you get a nice spell from it, and pretty good XP, even at higher levels.
