This is the quest to get the spell Primal Remedy, the 44th level Magician pet heal spell in LOY.

Vera is in one of the huts near the lighthouse in Gunthak.

You say, 'Hail, Vera'

Vera says 'Why hello there. It's quite a sunny day out here upon the rocks of Broken Skull, wouldn't you agree? It's nowhere near as hot as the temple of Solusek Ro, though. The breeze here is quite refreshing. To be honest, though, I already miss home and wish to return back as soon as I can. These pirates are quite dirty and smelly, but I must complete my [mission] before I return home.'

You say, 'What mission?'

Vera says 'My twin sister, Vira, has developed quite an illness and is confined to her quarters back in the temple. The clerics are baffled by it. At one moment she is hot and raging to the touch and the next she is as cold as the deep sea. If such an illness is impossible for the priests to cure, I must cure her in the only way I know how. I came out here to investigate the way the waters of Gunthak cool the hot lava coming from under the volcano of Broken Skull. The mixing of these two elements sometimes causes powerful elementals to manifest themselves here. I have a feeling that, by mixing the elements of the sea and the elements of the lava, I can make a potion that will soothe my sister. [Will you help] me?'

You say, 'I will help you'

Vera says 'Wonderful! The luggalds of this area make sport of the elementals that are birthed here. They take the life flickers of these elementals for hateful sacrifice to their foul god. Go and dispatch these followers of hate and return to me a flicker of lava and a flicker of sea. Please hurry! I know not how long my sister can hold out!'

Head across the water into tunnels, take first left and you'll see a fort. Go inside and there is a temple structure in the middle. Inside there are 4 spawns with luggalds that drop the flickers.

Vera takes the flickers from you, places them in a metal brazier and begins to chant in a deep rumbling tone. After a few moments of chanting, the flickers coalesce into one and form a pale, light blue liquid in the bottom of the brazier. Vera picks up a vial, corks half the substance within, and hands it to you. 'Wonderful! This should do the trick. Take this vial to my sister, Vira, in the Temple of Solusek Ro. I would make the trip, but I have discovered something I must investigate further.'

Go to the Temple of Solusek Ro, find Vira (she's the one that gave us our focus quests, remember?) :)

Give her the vial (apprehensive faction will do).

Vira swallows the liquid in the vial. After a few minutes, you notice the fire in the small gnome subside. She looks up at you and says, 'Why thank you. My twin was correct in her assumption of the power of the elements of Broken Skull. It's curious that she remained behind. Here, take this note to her so she can be assured that I am on the road to recovery.'

Go back to Gunthak and give the letter to Vera to receive the spell Primal Remedy. This leads into the quest for the higher level spell Elemental Empathy.

You gain experience!!

Vera says 'Thank goodness my sister is feeling better. While you were gone, I was able to figure out the exact healing power of the flicker liquid. I have transcribed it on this piece of parchment. Here, memorize this and may it serve you well. Now, if I can just figure out what sustains the lava elementals of Broken Skull. If you are up to it, I could use some [more assistance].'

Been doing this for several hours now. I've gotten about one Flicker of Lava every other cycle. Have yet to see the Sea.

Same experience here. July 23, 2007 - went into fort lastnight(22nd) killed the spawns several times with no drops, chalked it up to bad luck with the rng so I went to bed.

Went in this morning, and after 1 round of killing(3 nameds too woot!) had BOTH drop, then 2 more flicker of sea from the last 2 luggalds there.

How nice of SoE to offer us another spell quest but break the actual quest. I'm not sure it's actually broken, but it's obvious it's a chicken hunt again. Kill and kill and kill and kill light blues galore and the 2nd item u need NEVER drops.

I love EQ, would that SoE loved us enough to not just fix quests but make them better. Do what I do, don't buy another bloody expansion. I've stopped at the BS 'cause that's exactly what it is, pure BS ...just like the atlantis expansion by daoc ...talk about BAD.

I must have been lucky, with the help of a 41 pally, 37 necro, 42 cleric, and myself (45 mage), we managed to get both drops on the 4th round of killing luggalds (both zealots), coincidentally, the drops both came in the same set of spawns, real lucky, have yet to use spell, but forseeing soloing becoming much easier and wishing luck to you folks doing this quest.
Where to get the drops.
# Jul 10 2005 at 1:53 PM Rating: Decent
I spent 8 levels trying to get both of these drops. I started at lvl 41, with a 64 druid pulling and basically pling me. I finally got my Flicker of Sea at lvl 49.

Both items drop at the Lugald Temple. To get there: When you come out of the tunnel from the lighthouse area heading towards Dulak follow the left hand wall. You will come to an area that slants up, head up hill. You will see a very large staircase, go up it.

At the top is a huge double door. Go left again BEFORE the door. Follow that hall back to the end. There is a door there, use that to gain entrance to the temple. Kill every Lugald in site. There are many different types here, any type can spawn in any site.

Alla lists Flicker of Sea as dropping from the Novitiates.

https://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=20053

I got mine from an Acolyte.

Flicker of Lava seems to be much more common. I had 8 of them by the time I got one Sea.

I tried the other Lugald areas for several hours at a stretch. I did get two Flicker of Lava at the 4 Lugald spawns in the Troll fort. Thats taking the first left on the tunnel to Dulak. I got neither of them in the Dock area. Thats the houses between the end of the tunnel from the Lighthouse and the zone to Dulak. I killed every lugald in that area at least twice.

Overall I spent about 25 game hours killing lugalds and trolls. It really wasn't that frustrating because it was pretty good exp while I was at it. I finally petitioned and /bug ed the Flicker of Sea drop. Low and behold the next day I got it! They never did answer my petition.. Hmmm

I did talk to another mage that got both drops at the temple in one 3 hour stint. He couldn't remember what mob dropped the Sea though. I think it is just a very rare drop from any Lugald. The Lava seemed to be almost common in comparison.

I may just have been extremely lucky, but I just got both Lava and Sea in under 30 minutes at the Fort. Lava dropped from a Zealot one the first spawn and Sea from a Fanatic on the respawn.
Both at the Fort

Just a note about where the flickers drop (I was confused by the various posts).

The Flicker of Lava drops off the Luggalds in the small building at the center of the Fort in the Tunnels. I have had at least 4 drop there.

The Flicker of Sea drops off the Luggalds in "THE TEMPLE" up the stairs and inside the DOUBLE DOORS - (on the way to Nadox). Got one on the first Luggald we killed there.

Hope this helps anyone else who may have been confused by the previous posts.

Quest gave about 7% xp at level 44.
Cannot be done multiple times, for xp anyway... I got 2 of each flicker so I tried it second time. But, if someone else can try this quest twice, see if you can get xp for the quest twice, if you delete the spell from your spell book before doing it the second time. I was thinking maybe that's how the game checks to see if you've done the quest already.
flickers and where to find them.
# Dec 03 2003 at 11:20 AM Rating: Decent
The flicker of sea I got off the luggalds in the fort in Gunthak. Took several hours, but since I was there for xp as well, it wasn't too bad. And of course, after I'd gotten my drop, three others dropped within the next 45 minutes.

The flicker of lava dropped off a luggald at the castle, also in Gunthak. Up the stairs, took a left, killed the first luggald I saw and either got REALLY lucky or Karana knew I'd paid my dues camping the flicker of sea, because it dropped.

The spell is okay, but like someone said, not the best. But at that level, anything that kept my pet (and therefore, me) alive, was worth doing. Still haven't gotten around to the second one.

Ok this spell is not the greatest in the world. However it does help a little. Our mage heal spells are slow to cast and take what seems like forever to reset. So this spell gives us a little extra healing to keep our pets alive. So it is ok. Also I have a friend who is a mage as well. He tried the advice listed. Yes you can skip the first spell. Just go to Vera say "more assistance". I was with him when it worked. So if the heal over time is not your thang just move on the elemental empathy....however I will warn you, you thought some of the mage epic camps were bad, you aint seen nothing yet.
