Ofala Olan can be found in one of the huts near the lighthouse in the Gulf of Gunthak.

You say, 'Hail, Ofala Olan'

Ofala Olan says 'Salutations! It is nice to see one such as you in these parts; I do get lonely for some intelligent conversation around here once in awhile. The majority of the time however, I am much too preoccupied [researching]. There are so many interesting things to discover in a new area!'

You say, 'What are you researching?'

Ofala Olan says 'Many things actually. The very land of this island has interesting peculiarities due to the foreign plant life and substances the pirates have introduced into the ecology. I have been working most specifically on deciphering what portions of the strange materials may hold magical properties that could be useful to our work as Enchanters. Why, just the other day I believe I was on the verge of a great breakthrough with some odd substances I had mixed together, unfortunately I was careless and did not seal the vial tightly enough. When I awoke the next morning the [specimen] had completely evaporated.'

You say, 'What specimen?'

Ofala Olan says 'Among some of the substances I was experimenting with, I began to notice some peculiar attributes. I noticed some of the dark priests taking cuttings from certain mushrooms, and began experimenting with that first. I discovered that they could be boiled into a salve that had the most wondrous properties for the eyes! *sighs* It will take me ages to get the [necessary components] back to pick up where I left off on that particular spell, not to mention the research that I am compiling for my [brother] to assist with his specialties. I have enough material here to keep me swamped for ages, those spells will just have to wait!'

You say, 'Who is your brother?'

Ofala Olan says 'My brother is also an accomplished enchanter by the name of Stofo Olan. He has been hard at work in Erudin researching for his teacher Jeb Lumsed. He has a keen sense for the properties of stone and other such solid objects. For some time now he has been attempting to harness the power of stone for use in some form of mind control, that could be activated through a piece of jewelry. Entirely by accident, it seems that such a substance has been in use on this island for some time. It is very dangerous however, and as such most of my work has been based in theories tossed back and forth between he and I. Are you [interested] in this [strange rock] as well?'

You say, 'I am interested in the strange rock.'

Ofala Olan says 'What a small world! I have skill with gem setting as many of our kind do, although I am afraid my specialties lie more with other types of elements and power. There have been stories of miners down in the Torgiran Mines losing their wits or becoming near zombie like in their actions. I have a hunch that whatever is doing this is being harvested there. Take good care down there, I fear that the miners themselves may not be too friendly. Travel into the mines and bring me two chunks of whatever the ore is that they are gathering, be sure it is of the type that glows brightly. Most likely the miners will have a few samples, but their masters probably have a few as well. Bring these to me with an enchanted bar of gold and I can fashion a test ring from it. Be careful!'

Hand her an Enchanted Gold Bar and two Gleaming Zraxthril Ores (dropped from bloodguards and miners in Torgiran Mines).

Ofala Olan eyes you with a new measure of respect. 'Very well done! I did not think you would be successful in this. Let me harness this energy quickly then you must have Stofo take a look at it!' Being careful not to touch the gems too much with her bare hands, Ofala Olan deftly crafts a slim golden band, crossing strands of gold across the dimly pulsing stones to bind them in place and protect the wearer from harm. 'He still holes himself up in that dim room in Erudin. I don't know HOW he studies like that, but take it to him please! I am sure he will be most interested.'

Your next destination is Erudin, where in the upper floor of the Vasty Deep Inn (Inn loc: -1179, -144, 52.03) you can find Stofo Olan (NPC loc: -1103, -58, 84.03). Hand him the ring and the note.

You gain experience!!
Stofo Olan scans the note quickly and gasps. Hardly glancing at you, he begins examining the ring, tearing through notes and books scattered about his dark room. As he pores over a scroll of parchment covered in strange texts his eyes light up, 'Yes, yes this is it! Ofala really found something quite remarkable in this one! Watch my friend.' The slim Erudite slips the ring onto his finger and the gem begins to throb, Stofo seems to draw the power into himself for a moment then carefully places the ring back onto his desk. He closes his eyes a moment then turns to you, the darkness in his eyes almost lends fear for a moment before he smiles. 'Thank you my friend, this stone is very dangerous, but I believe that I have accessed the powers within me through it. Take these words and use them well, perhaps the power shall work for you as well, and please tell my dear sister hello.'

I killed over 400 crazed miners not to get one gleaming ore drop. Yet I was lucky enough to loot one Ore off a blood guard at the bridge omw to the miners cause someone was letting it rot 10 seconds left lucky me. After clearing 400 miners and only seeing zavthril maybe 4 times and pristine ore about 3 times as i think it is called, I just gave up I came back the next day the first Blood guard I kill drops the gleaming ore. Go with the blood guards.

Did this with level 55 chant and tank merc. charmed my way to area with 4 semi connected mines. got the ores within 5 minutes of each other after about an hour and a half of killing. never was in real danger. used my charm, root, fascination spells. never in any danger of getting killed. good luck all

Drop rate of the ore is really bad. Cleared the big cave with the blood guards 5-6 times until one ore dropped. Crazy Miner was there but was not targetable with any spell or attack, strange...

As a lvl55 Enchanter charm holds very nicely at guards. Haste and Boon of the Garou at your new pet, a rune and fascination for safety, a root because the critters like to run! and after 4AA solo the first ore dropped and after 5AA more the second dropped also.

If you have a mercenary then you don't need Rune. If you get adds you even can recharm after the merc healer has aggro on the mobs very easy.

I don't know if Sony changed the drop rate or what. Went through nadox to mine with a 63 mage friend. the second kill the first ore droped. We got the second ore once we crossed the bridge on like ther 3 or 4th mob in the room total time was under 45 min.

Took me 3 hours to drop one, then 8 of dropped like one after the other. /sigh. Figures.

If you're on Fennin I have 2 extra Sets for MQ if you want LOL (one got spoken for :) :)

I went to torgiran with my chanter (56) and my beastlord (73), fought my way to the crazed miners and had the 2 gleaming zraxthril ore drop after killing 4-5 crazed miners. gated to PoK bought/enchanted the gold bar and handed them to Ofala, have me ring and note np. Ran to Erusin and gave to Stofo... VOILA new spell. I have tried the quest before tryin with one ore and that and the gold bar were eaten, but recall the ores being very scarce. Perhaps they improved the drop rate to make us hate these quests a little less. =)
Long camp

Greetings,
Well, I just finished this quest too and, as previously reported, the ore drops are pretty slow. At first I took my 52 Enc to the entrance of Torgiran mines and killed about 1 yellow bub worth of minors and never did see any ore; that was about the time I came here to do some more reading up on the quest. After some reading, I decided that the general area around the entrance to Nadox by the fake wall would be best. I camped my 52 Enc a little ways from the Nadox zone and ran my 70 Monk over to the zone. The bloodguards were green to 70 so that was a small bonus. I cleared the entire bridge area and the rooms down past the Nadox zone. I think I saw just about every no-trade quest piece in the zone drop before I ever saw my first piece of ore. I also got more pet weapons that I know what to do with and my 70 Monk ended up getting nearly 1 yellow bubble of xp (lesson of the devoted on twice) before I was done. As it turned out, both pieces dropped in the open area near the bridge; one piece from each side.

Someone else had posted that the bloodguards that don't carry weapons could have a better chance at dropping the goods, but for me, they were dropping either no-trade ink (haste item quest), the other turquoise ore(BL quest I think), some other random no-trade items, or nothing at all. Just kill ALL of the bloodguards and keep clearing them until you get your ore (looks like black pearl). They seem to have a low agro range and it was easy for me to log in my invised Enc and loot the ores both times that they dropped. If you try to do this quest with your 50+ Enc, you can plan on being there for a very long time. It seemed like forever getting it done with my Monk and he was mowing through the bloodguards pretty fast. I am not even sure how well my Enc would hold up against them, they were conning DB to yellow at level 52.

The rest of it is pretty easy, just buy a gold bar and enchant it and give all 3 items to the quest mob in Gunthak. After that, head over to Edurin and give that guy the ring and letter that you receive from the first turn-in. Nice spell, well worth the effort. Also, it is accurate that this can be MQ'd so you might ask some pack-rats on your guild if they have any of the ores kicking around in the bank. Just be sure that you hand in the enchanted gold bar after the ores have been handed in. Best wishes -

I am a 55 gnome enchanter.
Handed in the enchanted gold Bar and 2 Gleaming Zraxthril Ore... got the ring and note to stofo as expected. May want to check your level AND if you have completed the previous quest /shrug
This can most likely be MQ'd but will not waste the time to test, as the drop rate is absurd.
Might want to revamp the time needed to around 6+ hours expected... I soloed this with enchanter charm style for over an hour, no drop, slaughtered it with a 55 War (and some nice DS's, fully twinked and using all vet skills) for an hour, massacred it with a 63 ranger pulling to both 4 ways for over an hour, pulled 12 at a time and cleared more then half the zone with a 74 shammy and an uberfied dog dog for the remaineder of what I think was about 4 hours or so...
she ate it
# Jul 02 2006 at 10:54 PM Rating: Decent
I gave her 2 gleaming ores and an enchanted gold bar and she ate the gold bar and gave me a plain zraxthril ore back. No ring, no letter.
My 2 cents worth...

I just completed this quest, and have some input that may be useful. There is good information already on this page about where and how to get the ore. What wasn't apparent to me, either from this page or the quest text is that you only need one of the ore. I fought until I had two of them, went to Ofala and turned in 2 ores and 1 enchanted gold bar. She returned on of the ores saying she had no need for it. My recommendation based on my turnin:

1 Gleaming Zraxthril Ore
1 Enchanted Gold Bar
Give them to Ofala and then head to Erudin =)

Based on your post Olyu, it sounds to me like this quest can be MQ'd. If someone turned in just 1 Gleaming Zraxthril Ore before you did your turn in, the NPC would only need 1 ore from you.

XP nerfed
# Jun 22 2005 at 6:38 PM Rating: Decent
The large amount of XP that the turn in for this spell gave has now been nerfed. Did this with a lvl 13 chanter and gained about 30% xp to next level. I know it used to provide a huge xp boost that gave many levels earlier. No longer :(
This was as at 22 June 2005
Can be MQ'd

Was hunting the Bloodguards in the area just east of the Nadox zone thru the secret wall near the Warlord room. Got 2 of the Gleaming Zraxthil Ores for a chanter friend after killing maybe 15-20 mobs, and helped him MQ the spell - I turned in the 2 ores then he turned in his enchanted gold bar and got his note for the spell turn-in in Erudin, so quite easy to MQ.

Still hunting in that area and have seen maybe 1 or 2 more Ores off the next 50-80 Bloodguards, so the drop rate is streaky (just like anything that depends on the "random" number generator).

Ofala Olan refused to give me the quest at lvl 44. Does anyone know what the required lvl to do the spell is?
RE: required lvl
# Aug 17 2004 at 1:21 PM Rating: Decent
I just got the quest with my 29 chanter an hour ago. Logged on my 65 beast got the ore, MQ'ed it and I'm glad I did...The exp off the quest took my 29 chanter from 19% exp to 97% exp in the lvl and I have the spell. Not sure what required lvl for the quest is but it's low.

Got both of mine in under 8 minutes. Someone was hunting at the south end of the big bridge. Either luck, or that's an incredibly good drop spot. Try it. Came to zone as 56 enchanter and had difficulty soloing. Invis works very well. Just /ooc your desires and then safely go to any location one just dropped.

Got 2 last night in about 20 kills from delerious miners. Didnt see one crazed miner so maybe i was lucky ) /shrug.
Crazed Miners?
# Feb 08 2004 at 7:31 AM Rating: Good
The information about this quest is not quite accurate. I solo'd for the gleaming ore very late last night. I saw not one single "Crazed Miner".

There were however plenty of "Delirious" and "Subverted" miners. Subverted ones where dubious and the delirious ones where scowling. (all green at 65) Several Broken skull Blood guards patrol the passages on set paterns which can very easily sync with the repop cycle. The miners are static so they do not roam unless aggro'd/pulled. They can take on any race: Human, Halfling, Euridite, Gnolls, Wood elves, etc. No casters in this dungeon so it's pretty straight forward.

I used DC to do the dirty work. Any one of the roaming guards are 46 so no worries with getting a 47 by mistake. I held about 6 spawn points and simply rotated one after the other for about 1 and a half complete cycles. The gleaming ore dropped one after the other. Total camp time was about 2 hours with travel time included. The gleaming ore looks like a black pearl, or hematite. The ore does not stack.

Hope this helps.

Actually, as you move further away from the Dulak Harbor zone line toward the Overseer Wrank spawn point, the delerious and subverted miners give way to crazed, and eventually fanatical miners. About a third of the fanatical are dark blue at 65. The "bruiser" guards also become "slaver" guards, which are a bit tougher, but still light blue at 65.
This spell rocks BTW

Took my 55 ench with 65 necro and we went straight to the Guards near the Nadox side. We found that the Guards NOT carrying weapons dropped the stones. Fortunately for us the Warlord spawned and we received a nice bracer for my sons Cleric. Only took about 2 hours of farming to get the two to drop. Warlord has high resists even for my 55 ench after tashing. Slow finally took at about 30% life, cripple never took, but weaken took pretty soon after the fight started.
MQable??

made 1 kill n the mines... then looted 2 of the no drop ore... it was the first mob when i zoned in from the docks (forgot name of zone)... well, when i went to loot i got an add that decided to hit me instead of m 58 mage pet... did get to loot one though (looks like i can MQ it)...
Good experience

I did this quest with my 45 enchanter, had help getting the ore obviously, but I got 20% exp, I dont what the exp. is like at 52, so do this early if you can, and more than once if the pieces drop.
quest is not changed
# Sep 30 2003 at 8:16 AM Rating: Decent
I did this today , handed in both gleaming zraxthil ore and the enchanted bar of gold , ppl that report otherwise probably somebody else droped a gold bar and wrong ore , or just 1 ore , so they kinda MQed for you ))

Quest Differences
# Aug 04 2003 at 12:38 PM Rating: Good
Some people have reported not needing both ores, or not needing the enchanted gold bar.

Remember, that quest givers have long memories. If someone gave the questgiver 2 nongleaming ores and an enchanted gold bar, then if you give the questgiver 2 gleaming ores, she will reward you without the need for the gold.

BTW, I'm over 6 hours (with a small 60+ group) killing miners and bloodguards (about 3 hours in each place) and still have zero.

Spent many hours killing miners near Dulak zone- nothing. 1 1/2 hours of killing Broken Skull Bloodguards, 2 ores. Moral of the story: Get a map, find the big open cavern with Bloodguards past the Dulak zone. You'll be glad you spent your time here instead of on the stupid miners. Oh and bring some sacks, the weapons sell for 5pp-ish each and you'll end up with alot of them.

Tons of room to charm kite here, though they do hit kinda hard so stay on your toes. Charm holds nicely on them (unlike the Bruisers who seem to break it constantly /shrug).
Quest change?
# Aug 03 2003 at 5:31 PM Rating: Decent
One note I forgot to mention:

When I did this quest, I turned in the 2 gleaming zraxthil ores and an enchanted gold bar. Ofala gave me back one of the ores, so maybe she only needs one now? There was the standard text message "no use for this item" as well, which I guess indicates a change in this quest.f
