The Ring of the Dead was the alternate reward for the Thex Mallet quest https://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/quest.html?quest=238. The other reward was the Reaper of the Dead. If only there was some way to tell by the name of the items.
The Thex mallet isn't a reward per se. Someone had to actually do the quest all the way AND turn the mallet in and people were afraid of handing in a magical weapon for an uncertain reward.
Pretty sure it was also in the Everquest quest compendium from the original Safehouse site.

Information on this is sketchy. There is a female NPC in the Necromancer Guild who will talk to you about a Ring of the Dead. I'm not sure if she is the one to talk to to get the ring. I have been told that she will recharge it if she really likes you, but won't give you the ring.
Verant has confirmed that this ring no longer drops. Quest removed by Verant. If you happen to have logs or screenshots of the old quest dialogue please share it. Ring is now only available as a purchase from Marcia Attamilgad for 70 nobles | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

point is that SKs might want to bind somewhere other than a city zone, and this would let them do so.
Point is, this quest is **NO LONGER ACTIVE**. It only remains in the game if you got the ring many, many moons ago. You can no longer *GET* the ring, only have it recharged if you already have one.

One charge of bind affinity, for necros who get the spell at 12, not worth the effort expened on this quest. For sk's dont even bother, just pay the 3pp that people take for donations for the binding shheessshhh!!

Well that's just typical. An item that fixes the second most obnoxious thing in the game (the MOST obnoxious being the Verant-blessed bug that lets NPCs see, attack, and walk through walls), and Verant snuffs it. I don't think anyone at Verant actually *plays* EverQuest. If they did, the game would be quite a bit different.

Originally, the Ring of the Dead was tradable ... a fellow guildmate and I got 4 rings when we stumbled across the quest. It wasn't much use to me, being a necromancer, but it greatly helped him as an SK. About two weeks after we discovered the ring, it became nodrop.
You CAN still recharge the ring, if you were ever able to get one. There are only a handful on mith marr, but they are all being used.

I did this quest many times until I got 2 different rings, both by the same name, one casts gate, the other bind affinity. And guess what, the NPCs still recharge it for me HEHEHE... These would probably go for a lot... I will think about selling them.

The ring with Bind Affinity charge ir lore and NO DROP.

This item was rewarded by Loveal S´Nez who also gives out the Reaper of the Dead after solving the Thex Mallet Quest. The Ring was originally recieved through the same quest, but only rarely given. It´s a pity, since it was a great artifact indeed.:(
