You can only do this quest with a single group. Completing this quest (or any of the other trials) will give you access to the Plane of Storms and the Plane of Valor.

Talk to Mavuin in the basement cellblock.

You say, 'Hail, Mavuin'

Mavuin strains his eyes to look up at you in disbelief, then reaches down into a rusted vent and pulls out a journal. 'Please I implore you, take word to the Tribunal. I have done nothing wrong, yet I have been sentenced to eternity in this cell. I wish to present all of the [information] about my case to them. They must listen to my plea if they are truly the gods of justice.'

You say, 'What information?'

Mavuin tells you, 'I know it has been said for years before me, and will be said for years after me, but I was truly framed for my crime. You see the gods feared the knowledge that I carry with me. So to prevent me passing this knowledge to others, it was set up to show that I had plotted to murder one of the other elders. Please go before the tribunal and plead my case. If you do this I will share what I know with you, I apologize for holding it against you, but I am desperate to be released.'

You have received a character flag!

Head to the area with The Tribunal, and ask them about Mavuin. Following the dialog, saying "I am prepared" to each Tribunal will give you description of the six trials.

You say, 'I am prepared.'

The Tribunal nods slightly. 'Very well. When you are ready, you may begin the trial of hanging. Act quickly to destroy the spirits of suffocation before their victims perish. We shall judge the mark of your success.'

You say, 'I am ready to begin the trial of hanging.'

The Tribunal says 'Then begin.'

You are teleported into the trial area.

Make sure to kill phantoms of asphyxiation and spirits of suffocation. Two mobs + Spirit of Suffocation spawn at the beginning, kill Spirit then get on a mob, another spirit will spawn, kill the spirit right away. Basically each wave will be 2 mobs and 2 spirits, but only 1 spirit can be up at one time. Razorbeasts are unmezzable; air elementals are mezzable. There will be messages to tell you how long you have to kill the spirit of suffocation before you lose. If one of the 3 sentenced prisoners falls over on the ground, KILL IT FAST, otherwise you will lose. After the spirits of suffocation are dead in the 4th wave, the boss, Gallows Master Teion, will spawn. When we spawned the boss we had 3 mobs up that were mezzed still from previous rounds. Boss is an enchanter, hits for 720 max and rampages. He's about as tough as all the other ones. Kill him to loot the Mark of Hanging.

Now talk to the Tribunal.

You say, 'What evidence of Mavuin?'

You have received a character flag!

The Tribunal tells you, 'You have completed a trial - impressive for mortals. You can tell Mavuin that we will hear his plea. We will seek him out as time befits us.'

Head back down and talk to Mavuin.

You say, 'Hail, Mavuin'

Mavuin tells you, 'So you have pleaded my case to the Tribunal, I am most thankful. I hope that they will listen to my case soon and release me. The knowledge that I promised you is this. The followers in the Plane of Tranquility are trying to find information on what has happened to Zebuxoruk. What I know is that he has been captured for a second time. If you want to find out more information I believe you should seek an audience with Karana and Mithaniel Marr. I can only assume that they were present at the time of his capture and know why this has taken place. Also seek from Marr a way to translate the divine language. Only with it can you understand the writing of the gods. There is no more that I can tell you, but thank you once again for your attempt in returning my freedom.'

You have received a character flag!

This will flag you to be able to enter the Plane of Storms and the Plane of Valor.

Need missing dialogues, /loc of quest mobs.

Obviously some early developer got his names mixed up and this is referred to as both Trial of Hanging and Trial of Suffocation. The Tribunal guy calls it HANGING but the MARK you obtain is labeled SUFFOCATION. Confusion may arise because there are spirits of suffocation mobs that you have to prioritize to win this trial.

This trial is as easy as EXECUTION, which is generally considered the easiest trial, with the only special twist is when the mobs spawn you need to kill the spirits of suffocation first, apparently, because if they stay alive too long the prisoners may start getting suffocated... maybe by hanging?

Start dialogue:

You say, 'I am prepared'
The Tribunal nods slightly. 'Very well. When you are ready, you may begin the trial of hanging. Act quickly to destroy the spirits of suffocation before their victims perish. We shall judge the mark of your success.'

You say, 'I am ready to begin the trial of hanging'
The Tribunal says 'Then begin.'

You then get ported into the trial.

'must kill' mobs that kill the prisoners are "phantom of asphyxiation" and "spirit of suffocation" for sure. There may be others. Possibly its any air elemental model mob - I've not succeeded at this solo yet to be sure.

"Phantom of asphyxiation" needs to be added to the list of related creatures for this event.

The "hanging people" as currently noted above are called "a sentenced prisoner."

Does anyone know if the Spirit of Aphyxiation = another type of Spirit of suffication? I have see invisible and he still was not viewable, interesting, but we died and never figured out if he dropped anything extra special either.

Here I am again giving strat advice for the trials..

OK this in my opinion is the hardest trial and you should not even consider it without a snarer and an enchanter. And here's why..

You start in a room with 3 hangman platforms and 4 benches. Place your healer on TOP of the center platform - your melees just at the base of the stairs, and your enchanter in the center. Each wave consists of 2 normal mobs and 2 spirits. The spirits look like air elementals and they spawn 1 at a time back to back in pairs - 2 total per wave. The spirits always spawn at the base of the stairs, which set of stairs always varies. The spirits are the only NPC that can end this trial for when they spawn, the prisoners start to choke and die. Killing the spirits fast is absolutely essential so have everyone but your enchanter working on killing the spirits. Once the first spirit dies, you may have up to 15 seconds before the second one spawns. Meanwhile at the same time 2 normal mobs will spawn in the back of the room, one on either side of the center closest to the furthast back benches. Razorfiends are UNMEZZABLE and they SUCK. You must root them out of aggro range and once rooted, have your snarer break off from the spirit and quickly toss on a snare before going back on assist to your tank. The other type of normal mob is an elemental, NOT to be confused with the spirits. These are all mezzable and are all casters, as are the spirits, the razorfiends are NOT casters. If you have a serious DPS group - you can start in on one razorfiend between spirit spawns, but you must break off immediately and kill the second spirit once it spawns, then go back to the razor and clear as many as you can per wave.
The reason the Razorfiends SUCK so much and also why you MUST snare and root them out of aggro range is that they proc the worlds longest stuns. They proc whirl till your hurl as well as a couple other stuns, and you will find yourself stuck in place getting beaten on for 5 to 15 seonds at a time totally helpless and also unable to contribute any DPS. The reason you have your enchanter in charge of rooting them, is that they cannot stun you if you have a rune up and enchanters with arcane rune have the best and most mana efficient means for dealing with them. SO keep your enchanter runed and keep rooting these bastards in the corners and snare them so when they break you have time to root them again before they make it to your tank or cleric and render them useless for 15 seconds or worse, kill them.
Now I recommend you keep the mezzable elementals sleeping for the whole fight unless you are the most super DPS group in town, because the waves come fast and you must keep the razorfiend count down to a minimum.

When the 8th spirit dies, at the end of the 4th wave, the boss will spawn... It doesn't matter how many normal mobs are still up and running around stunning you, he still spawns and must be killed. SO keep the elementals sleeping, try to clear all the razorfiends and be ready for the boss. Once he spawns, slow and kill him then clear the rest of the room.

One more note that seriously helped us win this trial. The razorfiends are NOT immune to stun, even the level 4 cleric stun.. so We had our cleric mem 3 stuns - Tarnation, Sound of Might, and Stun - so when you do have time to kill one, the cleric would toss on all three stuns while your group beat him down, that way your tank isn't frozen for the whole battle and your DPS stays high.

Good Luck, this is a tough one,

If all of the mobs are stunnable, do you know if it works to have a chanter chain stun everyone and then AE everything to death? From your description it sounds like you could run with a Tank, Cleric, Chanter, and 3 Wiz/Mages. Let the chanter stunlock everyone and let the casters do their work.

Has anyone tried this yet?

Thankyou Whom for this comprehensive trial guide.
Sounds like you had yourself some fun gathering this information. The one group trials have not lost their luster since the PoS PoV flags were removed at all. Someday Id hope to tackle the Seventh Hammer cycle.

Tried this with 60 Paladin myself, 59 monk, 58 bard, 60 necro, 61 cleric. 59 shaman. We all died very quickly. I got taunt on everything but one creature, cleric had to Divine Aura, bard got charmed, most of the time i was stunned. If your going to do this trial I HIGHLY advise to get high magic resist or to get an enchanter/bard combo. This is a very difficult fight.

PS, it takes a 62+ enchanter to charm the nonmezzable Nemesises.

Spawning

Waves go like this, either
A: wave 2/3/4 spawns after 2 spirits are killed
or
B: wave 2/3/4 spawns after given time after first wave

My guild gave it a shot last night and this is what we've learned

a breathless void - air elemental model
a timeless void - air elemental model
a stifling nemesis - fiend model
spririt of suffocation - air elemental model - hits for 360

These criters cast: Whirl till you Hurl, Winds of Tashani, Tepid Deeds, Insidious Retrogression, One Hundred Blows, Boltran`s Agacerie

The prisoner begins to choke as an invisible noose tightens around her neck.
The prisoner clutches at its throat, trying desperately to breathe.
These messages mean a spirit of suffocation has spawned and is starting to kill a prisoner.

The prisoner falls to the ground, legs kicking and fingers clawing at its throat.
This message means you better hurry up and kill that damn spirit of suffocation.

The prisoner gasps, taking in large breaths and coughing as the invisible noose disappears.
This message means you killed the spirit fast enough and the prisoner will live. Now go kill the next one quick.

The prisoner gives one final twitch and suddenly becomes still, its limbs no longer flailing. You have failed.
This means you blew it, you didn't kill the spirit fast enough to keep the prisoner alive.

Hope this helps out those thinking of attempting the Trial of Hanging. BTW on more than one occasion we had two spirits of suffocation up, or least it looked that way. It's possible that one was a corpse of one and the other the instaspawn replacement but I think if you take too long the next wave starts popping on you and you can get the first spirit while killing the second of the previous wave.

After reading that first discription above I was both scared and confused. I had no idea where I would pop and what would happen after I did, I had visions of mobs quadding on me for 500 unmezzable or unbanishable and 10 seconds to kill them all. NOT the case, if you have a group that doesn't have the DPS to take trial of EXECUTION but you have the durability. Such as with a Chanter Cleric Necro Beastlord Druid Warrior group. This is DO ABLE.
First off you enter in a room that looks MUCH like the trial of execution. So this should be a comfort and a familiar sight to those of you who have been in trial of ex. HERES what to do. The mobs are Mezzable with the exectption of the spirit. Just dont panic in there. You have time to kill these without high DPS. Just make sure that all mezzable mobs are mezzed, everyone except cleric and chanter are Drilling on the spirit. Dont get confused. The spirit will have Spirit in the name and look like a Elemental. The key here is to kill the spirits as soon as you seen them, then switch to another mob and drop it as quickly as you can. This is a trial where the MA's level is very important good taunt and defense counts. Higher your tank the easier this will be. The Boss mob can and will spawn after you kill the final spirit reguardless to if you have mezzed mobs or not. You face a difficult decision at this point. Nah not really. Chanter Slows the boss, cleric heals, chanter keeps other mobs mezzed and if you have druid and necro they can dot mezzed mobs, and help with boss. The key, is not to panic. So many people are scared of trials other than ex, they wont even try a simple trial like this. Give it a shot I know some of you out there are gonna wish you knew about this before you spent 4 hours trying to get 2 wiz mage cleric chanter war set up going for ex aoe group.

you had me convinced right up untill the throwing a dot on a mezzed mob. with that advice your chanter would die, and would prolly be trying to reach thru the phone lines to strangle the druid or necro that did that

This fight is not underwater, you don't need EB. The NPC prisoners are also untargetable...so you can't cast on them. As far as i know, you can't cast EB or any other "buff" or beneficial spell on NPCS, unless they're charmed...
