You say, 'Hail, Acomar Lothwol'

Acomar Lothwol says 'It is good to see you, ______. As a teacher, my job is to share the knowledge of all things mystical with eager students. I sense you have obtained the basics of planar knowledge, you are now ready to begin your first lesson in the ways of magical ability. Are you [willing to learn] what life has to offer?'

You say 'I am willing to learn.'

Acomar Lothwol says, 'The use of magic can be a taxing ordeal on the body, and quite often may leave you in a weakened state. Fortunately, I happen to know of a rather rejuvenating meal that will grant new power to your condition. If you are not familiar with the recipe for [Hobgoblin Surprise], I can tell you. What you must do is bring me some as well as your Planar Traveler's Manual. I hope you won't be long, for I am beginning to get quite hungry.'

You say, 'What hobgoblin surprise?

Acomar Lothwol says, "Don't be put off by the name, it's actually quite tasty. To make Hobgoblin Surprise, get a pie tin, some bread, add some hobgoblin meat and brown gravy. Cook it in the oven and enjoy the results. Mmm mmm, it waters my mouth just thinking about it.'

Hobgoblin Surprise is made by a skilled baker.

Hand in the Hobgoblin Surprise and your Planar Traveler's Manual to Acomar (note: If you're below 20th level he will eat the items).

Acomar Lothwol says 'How delicious! You have done well here, I can't remember how long it's been since I've tasted a meal so fine. Take this book, it will certainly help you in your use of the magical arts. When you are ready, Cadelid Etord will give you your next lesson, so be sure to speak to him. Do not lose your book or else he may not appreciate you coming to class unprepared.'

I tried this twice tonight with my 38 Enchanter - got the Planar Traveler's Manual, bought a hobgoblin surprise, turned them both in to Acomar Lothwol and got....a little coin, some exp and no Beginners Magic Manual.

But I didn't have the PTM equipped, and didn't hail Acomar, so I did it all over again. Equipped the PTM, hailed Acomar and went through the dialog, turned in the RMT and Hobgoblin surprise and once again, got nothing but a little exp and some coin.

I've petitioned, but not surprisingly, there are no GM's on, and I've had no response yet

Very odd... since I had done it half an hour earlier with my shaman without any problems.

D'oh!!!

My Enchanter already had the Beginner Magic Manual in the bank. Seems the quest is working normally.

/sigh
I have a question...

Hey the min. lvl. req. for this quest is 20, and i just dinged it. the only problem is, im on PvP server so i might have trouble getting ahold of these items. does the hobgoblin meat drop in veksar? can it be bought in bazaar off other players?
RE: I have a question...
# Sep 27 2003 at 5:22 PM Rating: Decent
No, hobgoblin meat drops from hobgoblins by the river in Plane of Nightmare, but yes, the meat can be bought in the bazaar.
As per experience...

Just recently found out about these quests, I'm a Shaman of 51 seasons right now. Did up to the beginner magic manual, and got 2% experience. Not bad for a couple of turn ins and a 175p hobgoblins surprise in the bazaar.

I did this quest with my lvl 30's casters and they got their reward. Then tried with my teen casters and he said they were not high enough. From the posts I would say you have to be at least lvl 20 to do this. I held on to the book and the hobgoblin surprise and will have my teen toons do it when they are 20.
Not so bad

Did the planar travelers manual quest and this quest in just under half an hour. I have master baking skill but found the Hobgoblin Surprise in the bazaar for 50pp (Luclin Server). Super easy quest and not a bad replacement for the Seal of Thoridain.

DANGER LEVEL RESTRICTION
# Jul 08 2003 at 7:15 AM Rating: Default
I know others have said it, but this really sucks, so I want to repeat it: If you're... oh, say level 11 and you do the planar manual quest, you get it and all is well, so then you buy hobgoblin surprise in the Bazaar and turn both in to this dude AND HE EATS THEM!!! You will lose BOTH ITEMS and get no reward. Do not do this quest unless you're sure you're high enough level (read other posts below).

I'm pissed. I spent 20 minutes or so running around getting the items for the manual and then 500p in the Bazaar for Hobgoblin Surprise. You'd think he could have at least returned the items if he wasn't going to give me the freakin beginners manual!
Cheap!

Cost 300pp for the hobgob meal in bazaar (only other price was 375pp) on E'ci. This quest also gave me half a blue of regular xp at level 54. NOT BAD at all.

I am a 20th druid and completed the quest, so you do have to be at least 20th level. However, be aware that the recommended level is 45, so the stats on it are about half that of listed at 20 (+3 Wis/ +3 Int/ Hp +3/ Mana +3/ Ac 3). Still a great item tho, and will only get better.

Only paid 200pp for the hobgoblin surprise - just keep checking the bazaar until you get a deal.

The baked item itself is tradeable, I came across a few in the bazaar the other day, and got one of these for my levle 51 druid. Tried to get one for my level 12 chanter as well, but the NPC just took the stuff and asked how one so inexperienced as myself came into possession of the items. Just thought I'd warn people that this quest cannot be completed at lower levels, though I'm not sure what level it can be completed at, I would have to guess it's below level 45, since that is the RECOMMENDED level for the item.

and I just failed with my level 19 shaman, so I am going to guess you need to be able to have a surname to be able to get this.

500pp for a Hobgoblin Surprise, down the tubes :(

I sure wish I had read all of these posts before I tried with my level 9 wizard :(( Of course, she failed! Why doesn`t Verant set it up so that the NPC just gives you back your Manual and your hobgoblin surprise, instead of taking it anyways and giving you a smarmy comment?? bummer ... it was a surprise all right!
RE: Cannot be done at lower levels

Think of the Role-play answer to this:

How could an inexperienced adventurer (below lvl 20) get the money to become skilled enough in baking to make such a gourmet dish? Much less, how could that same person get the ingredient to make the food in the first place, since hobgoblins are relatively high level compared to him/her?

Thinking about those questions, I understand why the NPC would take the items (at least the Hobgoblin Surprise) from a person that didn't get them through honest means. That's just my point of view, anyway. /shrug

I just finished with my 29 Enchanter. Had Planar Traveler's Manual equipped in my secondary slot and when I hailed him he went through the whole speech. I figured he probably wouldn't talk to me if he thought I was too low level. I'm glad I took the risk of losing my Hobgoblin Surprise. It is a very nice reward :)
Triv and successes
# Nov 18 2002 at 9:18 PM Rating: Decent
Triv is listed at 250+

I just made 4 out of 11 of them successfully on 255 int with 197 baking skill. (Gained 2 skill as well)
