In Befallen's first level, you'll find a room with four skeletal excavators. Kill them until you get a skeletal foreman to spawn (/loc?).

a skeletal foreman shouts 'Dig! Dig faster, you fools! Our masters say this ghost is all that stands in the way of the great one's return. Uncover his hiding place so that the forces of the Burning Dead might destroy him and recover its legacy!'

Once the foreman is killed, a ghost named Sir Ariam Arcanum will spawn. Hail him and he will tell you his story.

You say, 'Hail, Sir Ariam Arcanum'

Sir Ariam Arcanum says 'My thanks for destroying these minions of Befallen's masters.' Sir Ariam's form suddenly contorts in agony. 'This accursed place rends my soul trying to twist me to its purposes. My time here is short.'

You say, 'I sense a deep pain within you, ghost. Is there some way I might assist you so that you may find eternal rest?'

Sir Ariam Arcanum says 'Our time is short, so my options are slim, and it appears I must trust you with a task that will surely benefit us both. Will you perform a task so we might destroy the evil that dwells within Befallen? It is an evil antithetical even to your kind.'

You say, 'I will perform any task that will cleanse this place.'

Sir Ariam Arcanum says 'I have this parchment that must be delivered to either the Knights of Truth in Freeport or to the Queen of Neriak. The contents of the note concern them both and I am desperate to have this matter addressed so ask that you take it to which ever of the cities will accept your presence. Will you take the note to the [Knights of Truth] or to [The Dead]?'

You say, 'I will take it to the Knights of Truth.'

Sir Ariam Arcanum says 'It must be delivered to Sir Artanis in the city of Freeport. It details a terrible plan of the masters of this place to restore life to a foul necromancer named Marnek. The Burning Dead must not be allowed to achieve this goal. So that you may ride swiftly with news of this nefarious scheme, take this as well, the bridle to the noble steed that was entombed alive with me here. He has strength enough for one final ride.'

He despawns. You receive a Scroll of the Burning Dead and a Ghostly Bridle (NO TRADE/TEMPORARY/LORE with one charge of Summon: Horse). The scroll reads:

... all our enemies will once again tremble. My friends, the pieces are nearly in place so that our great master, Marnek Jaull may rise up again and spread the cleansing fire of the Burning Prince. Oh, how little our enemies realize! There are some among them who believe they have the knowledge to properly assemble the masters wand. And they deem mere legend the threat of so many of the masters other great weapons and his repository of knowledge that we have carefully safeguarded until this time: his return. The time is near. Rejoice. In humble service to Solusek Ro, Priest Amiaz.

Give the scroll to Sir Artanis in the Hall of Truth in West Freeport, at +825, -510, -125:

**************** He returns the note at Dubious(-250) but accepts it at Dubious(-150) ****************************

Sir Artanis says, 'By Marr, what is this? .. Burning Dead .. .. Marnek! By my blade this must be stopped! Where did you find this?'

You receive 7 copper from Sir Artanis.
You receive 7 silver from Sir Artanis.

You say, 'I found it in Befallen.'

Sir Artanis says 'You did well to ride swiftly with this news. I must take this directly to Valeron Dushire. If you learn more about this plot that would unleash this monster upon Norrath or wish to someday soon aid the Knights of Truth in putting down this evil, then return to speak to me again at a later time.'

Give him the Ghostly Bridle.

[Sir Artanis says, 'It was a fine and valiant steed to serve its master beyond the grave, but it looks to be near its end. But I have a fine eye for horses, and I dare say it will serve you one more time.'

For Any Who Are Driven Crazy...

Alright. I've discovered the entire solution to the Sir Ariam Arcanum quest, and it was a slap in the face when I found it. It's actually described in detail in the EverQuest RPG book on page 358 (not an advertisement for the book, but it's a good STRATEGY guide overall).

Anyhow, here are the full details of the quest, as written from the book. What you MUST say to the ghost will be in bold.

As Vagner began to kick the piles of bones to one side of the tunnel, a glowing mist began to issue forth from a small vent in a rockfall that blocked one portion of the tunel. Vagner shoved Halwain back three steps and stood his guard between the cleric and the billowing mass that slowly formed into a humanoid shape. When the mist resolved, it was clear the warrior and cleric faced a ghost, for it possessed a soft white luminescence and hovered a foot off the grime-covered floor.

The benevolent, clearly elven face put Halwain at ease, but Vagner was not impressed and remained poised to counter any attack.

Halwain nudged the warrior aside and spoke directly to the apparition. "I sense a deep pain within you, ghost. Is there some way I might assist you so that you may find eternal rest?"

Thrning, the figure inspected Halwain for a moment, and then replied in a faint, reverberating voice, like that of one who spoke only softly and from the opposite end of a great hall. "Out time is short, hero, for the minions of the Burning Dead will soon sense something amiss here. Will you perform a task so we might lay to eternal rest the evil that dwells within Befallen?"

Over Vagner's growled warning, Halwain hurriedly replied, "I will perform any task that will cleanse this place."

"Then take this," the ghost said, bringing forth a rolled parchment from the deep recesses of its faintly glowing form. "This must be delivered to the paladins of Marr in the city of Freeport. It details a terrible plan to restore to life a foul necromancer called Marnek. The Burning Dead must not be allowed to achieve this goal."

Halwain accepted the scroll with some surprise at its weight, and then responded. "But who or what are you?"

"I was Sir Ariam Arcanum, a paladin of Tunare. There is no time for my own story, which in any case is of little account." The ghost paused. "But if you wish to know more of me, and to do me a personal favor after you've traveled to Freeport, then please seek out my family in Felwithe. Will you travel there?"

"There is evil enough here to busy us - but, yes, we will travel to Felwithe as soon as we are able," the cleric answered smoothly.

"Then deliver this to my family. It is my love for them that binds me here. Deliver my sister's token," said the ghost. The ghost carefully removed a necklace and handed it to the cleric. Immediately, the ghost vanished, though its gentle radiance shimmered faintly for several moments afterward.

"May your journey take you through the Plane of Health, there to lighten your soul," Halwain intoned, "and then on to your place beside the Mother of All."

Soon, the ghostly paladin's glow was gone entirely, and the grip of the dank tomb closed in on Halwain and Vagner. Both men squinted, muttering oaths to return some day, and then turned their backs on the evil and prepared to seek a paladin in the city of Freeport.

END OF MESSAGE

The only differing parts of the story from the actual quest are that you can either deliver the note to Knights of Truth in Freeport or to the Necromancer's guild in Neriak. That should take care of any confusion you may have. Any questions, go ahead and contact me.

after you get the amulet go to felwithe and hand into sir ariam's father he takes and gives you a new amulet one to which i think is still part of yet another quest since it is +3ac +3str +3 cha +3int +3 wis but is a lore no drop magic item. it it didn't still have another use why would it be lore not just magic no drop?

Most Lore items are not just quest items. They usually have the Lore descriptor to keep people from running back and forth between Befallen and Felwithe and accumulating amulets.

First, I was camping both the Excavators near the skull fireplace & those in the collapsed tunnel next to the entrance. The Foreman spawned when I killed one of the Excavators in the collapsed tunnel. The Foreman spawned right in front of the fireplace, not from one of the Excavators' spawn points.

Here's the text for the evil side of the quest:

Sir Ariam Arcanum says 'I have this parchment that must be delivered to either the Knights of Truth in freeport or to the Queen of Neriak. The contents of the note concern them both and I am desperate to have this matter addressed so ask that you take it to which ever of the cities will accept your presence. Will you take the note to the [Knights of Truth] or to [The Dead]?'

You say, 'i will go to the dead'

Sir Ariam Arcanum says 'Then take this parchment to the Queens assistant, the necromancer Xon, enemy of my enemy. I have no love for her, but Queen Thex's interests too are at risk. This details a terrible plan of the masters of this place to restore life to a foul necromancer named Marnek. The Burning Dead must not be allowed to achieve this goal. So that you may ride swiftly with news of this nefarious scheme, take this as well, the bridle to the noble steed that was entombed alive with me here.'

[Travel to Neriak 3rd Gate]

You say, 'Hail, Xon Quexill'

Xon Quexill says 'Welcome to the Lodge of the Dead. May you serve our Queen with the bleeding of others.'

[Give Xon note]

Xon Quexill says 'Very interesting, servant of the Queen. This deed has stayed my wrath for this interruption of my business. Where did you find this?'
Your faction standing with The Dead got better.
Your faction standing with Queen Cristanos Thex got better.
Your faction standing with King Naythox Thex got worse.
Your faction standing with Keepers of the Art got worse.
Your faction standing with Eldritch Collective got worse.
Your faction standing with Primordial Malice got worse.
You gain experience!!
You receive 8 silver from Xon Quexill.

You say, 'in befallen'

Xon Quexill says 'It is true that the return of Marnek could create difficulties for us, especially if this has the blessing of Solusek Ro himself. Therefore, I command you to deliver to me any further information you uncover regarding the plans of the Burning Dead, and likewise I order you to return here at my bidding for further instructions in this matter. Now, begone.'

[Give Xon No Rent Bridle]

Xon Quexill says 'Ha ha ha ha! Oh the poor steed of a noble paladin! Bah, it will find no rest yet. I who can command the spirits of the dead demand it serve you once again.'

[Xon gives you back new Bridle]

Then I tried to following to get more info from him, but had no luck.

You say, 'what about further information'
You say, 'what about further instructions'

Here's my personal experience with this quest.

After killing a few skeletal excavators on the first floor of Befallen, a skeletal foreman spawned in the alcove where the skulls with glowing eyes are. He immediately said this:

a skeletal foreman shouts 'Dig! Dig faster, you fools! Our masters say this ghost is all that stands in the way of the great one's return. Uncover his hiding place so that the forces of the Burning Dead might destroy him and recover its legacy!'

I killed the skeletal foreman and immediately Sir Ariam Arcanum spawned in where the foreman had been. Sir Ariam was invisible. All you could see was his name and the two-handed sword he wielded.

I hailed him and he responded with this:

Sir Ariam Arcanum says 'My thanks for destroying these minions of Befallen's masters' Sir Ariam's form suddenly contorts in agony. 'This accursed place rends my soul trying to twist me to its purposes. My time here is short.''

Sadly, nothing is bracketed in his text, so I have no idea how the original trigger was found, as it's not exactly intuitive. Anyway, using the quest is it currently is in Allakhazam's database as a guide, I said to him "I sense a deep pain within you, ghost is there some way I might assist you so that you may find eternal rest?"

He resonded with this:

Sir Ariam Arcanum says 'Our time is short, hero, for the minions of the Burning Dead will soon sense something is amiss here. Will you perform a task so we might destroy the evil that dwells within Befallen?'

Once again, no bracketed text. I resonded according to what was already on the quest's page on this site. In other words, I said "I will perform any task that will cleanse this place".

Sir Ariam then gave me a note called "Scroll of the Burning Dead" (lore, no drop, weight of 0.1, and small sized).

He went on to say:

Sir Ariam Arcanum says 'I have this parchment that must be delivered to either the Knights of Truth in freeport or to the Queen of Neriak. The contents of the note concern them both and I am desperate to have this matter addressed so ask that you take it to which ever of the cities will accept your presence. Will you take the note to the [Knights of Truth] or to [The Dead]?'

I said, "I will take it to the Knights of Truth", to which he responded:

Sir Ariam Arcanum says 'It must be delivered to Sir Artanis in the city of Freeport. It details a terrible plan of the masters of this place to restore life to a foul necromancer named Marnek. The Burning Dead must not be allowed to achieve this goal. So that you may ride swiftly with news of this nefarious scheme, take this as well, the bridle to the noble steed that was entombed alive with me here. He has strength enough for one final ride.'

At this time he also gave me the Ghostly Bridle:

Ghostly Bridle
MAGIC ITEM LORE ITEM NO DROP NO RENT
EXPENDABLE Charges: 1
Effect: Summon Horse (Casting Time: 2.0)
WT: 1.0 Size: MEDIUM
Class: ALL
Race: ALL

After giving me the bridle and speaking, he immediately despawned. I left Befallen, and when I got outside, I read the note he had give me. It wouldn't scroll for me, so perhaps it's bugged? Anyway, it said this:

... all our enemies will once again tremble. My friends, the pieces are nearly in place so that our great master, Marnek Jaull may rise up again and spread the cleansing fire of the Burning Prince. Oh, how little our enemies realize! There are some among them who believe they have the knowledge to properly assemble the masters wand. And they deem mere legend the threat of so many of the masters other great weapons and his repository of knowledge that we have carefully

As I said, it wouldn't scroll for me, so that's all I could see. After I read it, I proceeded to Freeport.

I found Sir Artanis outside the Hall of Truth in North Freeport. I gave him the note, to which he replied:

Sir Artanis says 'By Marr, what is this? .. Burning Dead .. .. Marnek! By my blade this must be stopped! Where did you find this?'
Your faction standing with Knights of Truth could not possibly get any better.
Your faction standing with Dismal Rage got worse.
Your faction standing with The Freeport Militia could not possibly get any worse.
Your faction standing with Priests of Marr could not possibly get any better.
Your faction standing with Steel Warriors got better.
You gain experience!!
You receive 4 copper from Sir Artanis.
You receive 6 silver from Sir Artanis.

The factions that show as maxed were already maxed for me. I said to Sir Artanis, "I was given it in Befallen", to which he replied:

Sir Artanis says 'You did well to ride swiftly with this news. I must take this directly to Valeron Dushire. If you learn more about this plot that would unleash this monster upon Norrath or wish to someday soon aid the Knights of Truth in putting down this evil, then return to speak to me again at a later time.'

I then gave him the Ghostly Bridle. He immediately gave me this:

Bridle of Sir Ariam
MAGIC ITEM LORE ITEM NO DROP
EXPENDABLE Charges: 1
Effect: Summon Horse (Casting Time: 2.0)
WT: 1.0 Size: MEDIUM
Class: ALL
Race: ALL

and said:

Sir Artanis says 'It was a fine and valiant steed to serve its master beyond the grave, but it looks to be near its end. But I have a fine eye for horses, and I dare say it will serve you one more time.'

I then proceeded to Felwithe to speak with Ariam's father, Arrias Arcanum. When hailed, Arrias replied:

Arrias Arcanum says 'I am sorry, young one, but I am too burdened by my own troubles to help you now. Please seek another of the faith to ease your soul.'

I said to him, "What troubles?", to which he replied:

Arrias Arcanum says 'My son Ariam, a paladin of this fair city, has been missing for many years. Now, after remaining hopeful for so long, I have given up and it has broken my heart and soul. If I could but hear news to know of his fate, then I could find comfort again. Until then, I am no good to others. I am sorry.'

When I tried to give him the Bridle of Sir Ariam, he simply said:

Arrias Arcanum says 'I have no need for this item Tarwen, you can have it back.'

and returned it to me.

I tried saying all of the following things to him, all with no response from him:

I found your son.
Who is Ariam Arcanum?
What fate?
Your son rests.
Your son has found eternal rest.
Ariam has found eternal rest.
Your son is in Befallen.
I can ease your troubles.
I have found him.
Who is Marnek?
Your son is dead.
He is dead.
He is a ghost.
The Burning Dead seek him.
Who is Marnek?
Tell me about your son.
Tell me about Ariam.

Saying the word "his" in any phrase, or even just the word "his" alone produced this result:

Arrias Arcanum says 'I am sorry, young one, but I am too burdened by my own troubles to help you now. Please seek another of the faith to ease your soul.'

That's all I have found so far. Hopefully someone else will figure the rest out. As for me, I'm logging back on now to try some more things :)

The rest of the note's text...

"...repository of knowledge that we have carefully safeguarded until this time: his return. The time is near. Rejoice.

That priest's name sounds familiar. Cannot quite place it tho.

Sir Artanis mentioned something about Valeron Dushire...I went and talked to Valeron...
from my log...
[Thu Oct 03 23:06:08 2002] Logging to 'eqlog.txt' is now *ON*.
[Thu Oct 03 23:06:13 2002] You say, 'who is marnek'
[Thu Oct 03 23:06:13 2002] Valeron Dushire says 'According to this crest on the tunic, you have recovered one of the bones of a lost paladin [hero].'
[Thu Oct 03 23:06:16 2002] You say, 'what hero'
[Thu Oct 03 23:06:16 2002] Valeron Dushire says 'His name has been long lost but his legend lives on in every young knight who aspires to continue his fight. He attempted to quell an evil that resided within Kithicor, perverting nature itself. Much to his relief, it was an earthly foe he fought against and not a denizen summoned from the planes of evil. Then, suddenly, he was surrounded by dozens of dark elves. He was captured and taken to the Dead to be experimented upon and had his soul twisted by vile necromantic magics. Then the Teir'Dal cast his remains to the winds. Where they landed, no one knew, until now. You have found one of his bones. I hereby charge you with a holy quest to bring this hero's bones back for a burial with honors. Do you [accept], knight?'
[Thu Oct 03 23:06:19 2002] You say, 'I accept'
[Thu Oct 03 23:06:19 2002] Valeron Dushire says 'Good! I knew you would. It is one of the highest honors one can receive. Your quest will not be easy for I know not where his other bones lie. A spy of ours within Neriak was able to surmise that six of his bones, along with his sword and shield, were scattered throughout Norrath. You must search far and wide to find the remaining pieces, as you already have one. Do not give up. It is now your sacred duty. Once you have retrieved all eight pieces, come back to me and inform me that you [have all the bones].'

[Thu Oct 03 23:06:36 2002] You say, 'I have all the bones'
[Thu Oct 03 23:06:36 2002] Valeron Dushire says 'Excellent! You are indeed worthy to bear the title of Holy Knight! Now, about the coffin.. I have spoken with Ping Fizzlecutter, outside the western gates. Ask him about the coffin and once it is made, take it to Simon Aldicott of Marr. I shall have Simon meet you by the lake in the commonlands after Ping gives you the coffin.'

Is this another quest does anyone know or is it the continuation of this one? It doesnt seem that this quest is complete by the way that Sir Artanis speaks of the horse...

Foreman spawn
# Oct 03 2002 at 11:44 AM Rating: Decent
It would appear that the spawning of the foreman is linked to the death of an excavator. I have done this twice now and the foreman ALWAYS spawned right after the death of a skeletal excavator. I was using AE to kill all the skeltons at once so I dont know which one. I would guess that killing an excavator gives a random chance of spawning the Foreman.

Also the bridal poofs when used so if you want to hand it in at the end you cant use the horse to get to freeport.

It's a real quest, I had one of the bridles. Here's what I have from my log. Sir Artanis was right out in front of the paladin's guild in North Freeport.

----

You say, 'Hail, Sir Ariam Arcanum'
Sir Ariam Arcanum says 'My thanks for destroying these minions of Befallen's masters' Sir Ariam's form suddenly contorts in agony. 'This accursed place rends my soul trying to twist me to its purposes. My time here is short.''
You say, 'I will perform any task that will cleanse this place'
Sir Ariam Arcanum says 'I have this parchment that must be delivered to either the Knights of Truth in freeport or to the Queen of Neriak. The contents of the note concern them both and I am desperate to have this matter addressed so ask that you take it to which ever of the cities will accept your presence. Will you take the note to the [Knights of Truth] or to [The Dead]?'
You say, 'I will take it to the knights of truth'
Sir Ariam Arcanum says 'It must be delivered to Sir Artanis in the city of Freeport. It details a terrible plan of the masters of this place to restore life to a foul necromancer named Marnek. The Burning Dead must not be allowed to achieve this goal. So that you may ride swiftly with news of this nefarious scheme, take this as well, the bridle to the noble steed that was entombed alive with me here. He has strength enough for one final ride.'

----

You say, 'Hail, Sir Artanis'
(hand him the note)
Sir Artanis says 'By Marr, what is this? .. Burning Dead .. .. Marnek! By my blade this must be stopped! Where did you find this?'
You say, 'I was given it in Befallen'
Sir Artanis says 'You did well to ride swiftly with this news. I must take this directly to Valeron Dushire. If you learn more about this plot that would unleash this monster upon Norrath or wish to someday soon aid the Knights of Truth in putting down this evil, then return to speak to me again at a later time.'
(hand him the ghostly bridle)
Sir Artanis says 'It was a fine and valiant steed to serve its master beyond the grave, but it looks to be near its end. But I have a fine eye for horses, and I dare say it will serve you one more time.'

Was funny.
