The tortured librarian can be found in the library in Kaesora. He is on Brood of Kotiz (Iksar Necro) faction.

You say, 'Hail, tortured librarian'

tortured librarian says 'Bring to me that which was taken.'

Go to the Emerald jungle and clear the northwest area (top side of the cliff) of mobs. You'll eventually get "an iksar tomb raider" to spawn. He is approximately 33-35th level and is a rare spawn.

He always drops a book, which can be one of several Iksar history books. The common drops are the same books as sold in Cabilis. His uncommon drop is a TEMPORARY version of Venril the Chief (tradeable). This is similar to the ones sold in stores in that it covers the rise of Venril Sathir and his creation of an Iksar Empire.

An Iksar tomb raider has taken 151 damage from your Plague.
Your faction standing with The Forsaken has been adjusted by -2.
Your faction standing with Legion of Cabilis has been adjusted by 1.
Your faction standing with Brood of Kotiz has been adjusted by 1.
You receive 2 platinum, 1 gold and 6 copper as your split.
You have slain an Iksar tomb raider!

Once you have that book, you bring an Emerald to Dom K'Perl in the Dark Elf outpost of The Overthere. Handing it to him will result in a tradeable TEMPORARY book called 'Before Green'. If you are Kill on sight at the outpost and worried about being attacked by guards, you can have someone hand in the Emerald and trade the book back to you.

Take the two TEMPORARY books and head back to Kaesora's library. If the tortured librarian is not there then clear the libary of MOBs until he appears. He will despawn after a while.

Hand him the two books and it will result in:

tortured librarian says 'All must be returned!'
tortured librarian fades out of existence. The air smells of death. Something has appeared in your hand.

The result is a Large Tassle Bookmark which identifies as a 'Tassel of Flaxen Cord', required for the Necromancer 8th Rank quest in Cabilis West.

Kaesora is a bit messed up right now. There are level 75ish undead mobs all around the Library area, making the tortured librarian inaccessible to anyone trying to solo this part. They see invis and invis-to-undead (at least on my 62 Nec). I'm not sure how many high level people it would take to swath a path, as I've heard they hit pretty hard (there's a few posts under the "Kaesora" dungeon link above). Good luck if you're going to try! Hopefully things will be back to normal after the anniversary.

The tortured librarian doesn't de-pop, he shadow steps in and around the library.
Just wait for him, amiable to necro lizzard, and wait for the other mobs to leave the immediate area. Drop invis-vs-undead and hand in the two books. Gate.

To get to the library I had to FD a few times, especially at the see-invis spiders.

as i type this, I just killed the Iksar Tomb Raider at 3267.59, 3102.97, -52.63 in the Emerald Jungle. Just kill anything and everything and you should find him eventually...took me and 2 others 5 min to get him to pop and kill him.

Spawned it twice close to 3138, 3117, -31.09 (south of a ruin). I circled the ruin for an hour to get the two pops, 2nd time dropped the norent book.

When I started no tigers anywhere, ended up with a few of them and they were aggroing the Tomb Raider. I killed the tiger he was aggroed and let him walk a sec before engaging.

I was able to invis into overthere outpost. Quest NPC Dom was dubious to my drakkin self disguised as a troll (golems and guards were KoS). Accepted turn in but wouldn't sell to me. No aggro when I dropped invis to trade inside his rooom, but I was level 63 so the guards nearby were LB cons mostly.

/nod This location is correct: the ruins. He was there and agro'd me before I even started camping him. Lucky for me, he had the right book (lore, temporary).
The good ol' days of EQ were all about roleplaying. In Norrath, you got to be a hero.

I have spent about 8 hours with a ranger killing around the ruins in the NW, I have also spent around 3-4 hours FD at the top of the stairs waiting, finally I have kept the pit area next to the bottom of the stairs cleaned for a couple hours. Not once has the tomb raider spawned or been on track. According to the posts people say they get him to spawn a couple of times or more an hour. What the heck am I doing wrong. This it the last piece to my 8th skullcap and I can't get the guy to spawn.:( If you have any ideas please help. Thanks.
Dom K`Perl Faction?

Is Dom K`Perl on Venril Sathir faction? Just curious if I can get the book if I'm dubious or if I need someone to get his book for me.

Just a warning, I have completed this mission up to the tortured librarian part. Since the 2 books are NO RENT I killed myself in Kaesora in the library, then ran back and rezzed myself and looted everything but those 2 books(In case of some drunk guy knocking out phone lines or such). I started Killing every mob in the area and then waited on repops. When the tortured librarian popped up, I looted the other 2 books from my corpse and turned around to give them to him... HE'D ALREADY DESPAWNED! Was up for a grand total of 10 secs maybe. Now I'm killing again, trying to get him to pop again...

Ok I killed them all again, then waited for respawns.. was killing respawns and he popped inside again while I was killing 1 mob. 2 seconds later he's walking towards the door, so I hail him to stop him for the turn ins. I suppose that when he exits the library he despawns.

Nixoh is sad

I'v been working on this quest for 2 days now, all the way up too 8th rank Woot!, plus have almost all the pieces for 9th.... but the real reason i'm posting is in response to Nixoh
Congrats! It's always impressive to see folks solving a quest for the first time, but when it's been around for FOUR EXPANSIONS.... wow!

Wow is right! wow what a bad attitude, i mean really.... not only is the Demi-lich Skullcap a pretty sweet item, anything with clicky dmg spell is uber, but mainly Nixoh are u really so "uber" that your so above this quest? also show me some other quests that can be done without a raid force, in a day or two that give an item that sells for 80k plus >>>Necromancer skullcap 8th rank (Lore, not nodrop) sells for atleast 80k if not more on Prexus as an MQ for Demi-lich skullcap

anyway if your working on this quest keep at it.... it can seem a pain at times but it's worth it, just ignore sad people like Nixoh who have nothing better to do then flame people

there are two types of before green
# Sep 06 2004 at 8:15 AM Rating: Decent
Warning! There are two types of before green. There is a lore version that does not work when you turn it in to the librarian. The proper one to use is the no rent version that you get from Dom K Perl. I tried to turn in the one that drops as one of the books from the iksar tomb raider, and the librarian ate the venril book and handed me back the before green book. Don't learn the hard way like I did! I petitioned and the GM replaced the venril book, so there is a happy ending after all hehe!

Haha finally got the Tome Raider. Had a 59 bard friend come out. I think the best way to make him spawn is to literally KILL EVERYTHING around those NE ruins. It wasn't hard to find mobs cuz we'd always have 4-5 adds at a time. I'm possitive just slaughtering everything works because we had the bugger spawn 3 times in half an hour up near those ruins. I've killed him a total of 7 times to get that stinking book. The staircase thing is still dependable IMO though. But if he isn't under there just go to the ruins and slaughter. Much luck to all you necros.

I'm still working on this quest so I'm not possitive of the best method yet. So far I've killed the raider 4 times. First time I had camped the north west ruins for a couple hours and found him walking from the southeastern set of buildings towards the general direction of the staircase. And the 3 other times I've actually found him under the staircase, the spot where you get that mass of mobs stuck under that first platform up the staircase. I'm guessing he spawns up at the ruins then wanders over and gets stuck under the staircase. Some people say clear it some don't, but so far for me it's been a dependable place to check when I have to log or take a break from camping and come back later. It's a matter of rooting him out or clearing all the mobs, if you have sow it's doable, just run around in circles and have your pet (with aug and spirit armor, or whatever) pick em off one at a time. Also wondering if he has some kind of PH or if it's totally random. I'll prolly post again once I finish this sidequest. Been camping the raider since the 27th.

well he drops the book "Before Green" also ... I have been hunting him for 5 days now and have gotten 2 lvls doing it... WHEN I do get him to spawn he does NOT drop the book I need, he drops anything but the book I need, is very frustrating ... Yes I clean out under the stairs, it does NOT help... any other info besides "clear out the NW corner" and "clear out under the bridge" would help out alot ... I have already gotten 3 parts for the lvl 9 cap, I just need to get past this choke point and any help would be a good thing ...

Dropped right near the top of the steps. 11:35pm EST. Just randomly cleaning out the area. Dropped the Venril the Chef that is forgot to put that in there on the first try.

Ok, got the Tome Raider to spawn 3 times so far. He did not appear on the top of the platueu, but at the bottom or underneath the great stair leading down from the plateu.
Working on tortued librarian now, been at it 7 hours and no spawn....

After reading this post i headed for the stairs, i ran up under the stairs and i must have had around 15-20 mobs aggro me in the highest point you can reach while still under the stairs. I wanted to warn anyone who planned on trying this method. I just started but it seems like a great plan, just don't get slaughtered like i almost did.

The way I killed all of them without dying is by running in large circles and letting my pet peel them off 1 by 1. the mobs are around 40 and hit 70ish.

I had 4 tomb raiders spawn up top in a few hours of kiting every mob i could find and clearing out the mobs that got caught in the stairs, 2 of them spawned near +3060, +2644, i found one wandering at +3600, +2300 and another at +2800, +3500. hopefully this will help. good luck guys.

The pathing is screwed up - went there and found lots of mobs stuck in the cliff face. Found this same problem in Warslik Woods when I was hunting the Skulking Brutlings. Found the Brutlings and lots of goblins stuck in the cliff near the ocean.

I solved this last thursday thanks to the help of Korey Portagirl <Celestial Navigators>. I thought I should post and provide more details to anyone interested in this or the Iksar Hermit quest in west Cabilis. I was kind of disappointed it was only the unsolved subquest of an unsolved quest, but its progress so was happy overall! :)

This is the second Flaxen item I believe to be linked to the Iksar Hermit's quest. The other is the 'A Yellow Whip' which identifies as a Flaxen Cord I believe. Item is:

Getting the 'an Iksar tomb raider' to spawn is similar to getting Kwinn or Red Eye Jack to spawn in FV, except the mobs are a few levels higher here in EJ. The other difficulty is that he doesn't always drop the book needed. AND its norent so you need to either make a duel corpse or complete the rest of the quest when it drops.

The Tortured Librarian has spawned in 1-4 hours of killing the spawns in the library each of the 3 times I have tried. I am not sure how representative this is though.
