Hierophant Oxyn is located in the Temple of Terror.

    You say, 'Hierophant Oxyn'

Hierophant Oxyn says 'Greetings, and may the pain of the ancients guide you. You have come to us for guidance, have you not? We are the Hierophants of Cabilis and we guide the young Scale Mystics. All petitioners shall speak with me of [temple tasks].'

    You say, 'What temple tasks?'

Hierophant Oxyn says 'The Temple of Terror requires all young Scaled Mystics to [perform daily tasks.]. The tasks are necessary to the upkeep of our order as well as that of our brothers, the Crusaders of Greenmist.'

You say, 'I will perform daily tasks.'

Hierophant Oxyn says 'We require many components for various rituals. Take this Component mortar and fill it with the following items - foraged [mud crabs]. two small mosquito wings and one portion of bone chips. You must then use the pestle and combine all the components. When you have a full component mortar, you may return to me and I shall pay you your wages, but most importantly, you shall prove your devotion to the Scaled Mystics.'

    You say, 'What mud crabs?'

Hierophant Oxyn says, 'Mud crabs are tiny crustaceans which live along the mudcaked shores of the Lake of Ill Omen. You can forage for them and find a handful of them at a time.'

Hierophant Oxyn hands you a Component Mortar and asks you to fill it with the following items:

    Two Small Mosquito Wings
    One Bone Chips
One Mud Crabs (foraged in the Lake of Ill Omen).

Hierophant Oxyn says 'We appreciate your service. Take a few copper for your deed as well as some of our cursed waters. They will provide you with nourishment. As for future tasks, we are searching for a few [lost skulls] and i am sure you are searching for your [iron cudgel of the clairvoyant] And i also hear that the furscales are in need of some broodlings to do some manual labor. Tell them Oxyn sent you.

Your faction standing with Scaled Mystics got better
Your faction standing with Legion of Cabilis got better.

Receive some experience, faction, copper, two Cursed Wafers, and access to the Shaman Skull Quest No. 1.

    Mud Crabs

I have nearly master forage, and am in LOIO a fair deal - my shammy friend needs them; I forage all the time and get them frequently <<all over the zone>> now if I can remember to have food in my backpack so I dont consume them before I can return to Cabalis to bank them - I am considering starting a mud crab business - would any of you frustrated adventurers care to buy some crabs??
    1 PP :) - be@mill - send tell.

I must be the most unlucky Isakar on Kunark. I have foraged over 10 hours by the stupid lake. I have tried foraging by the gate, on the sores of the lake, on the water surrounding the lake, in the river, by the river, i even ran up to the windmill once and still no luck in finding the "handfulls of mudcrabs" Hierophant Oxyn talks about. I think all NPC's that are untruthful should be stuck down where they stand. All I have to say is these stupid wafers better be worth while because of all the time I wasted and all the exp I lost by messing around the lake.

Here's a really stupendous piece of advice I got from someone I don't remember. One of the options menus includes a section where you can assign a secondary command or keystroke (or something; I haven't played in a while) to various commands. What I do is put Sense Heading (or, in the case of a foraging character, Forage as well) on one of the 6 hotkey slots. Then, in that menu, I set it up so that whenever I pressed the left arrow key, it would press my Sense Heading hotkey as well. You could set up both Sense Heading and Forage this way - left and right. Every time you make a turn, you use the skill. You don't even have to pay attention! I just forgot about my Sense Heading for five levels or something on another character, checked it out, and it had a skill level of fifty-something and worked almost every time.

I'd love it if the dishonest NPCs were stuck down where they stand! I'd stand back and nuke 'em until I'm oom, then meditate back up and do it again!

Wafers are just food, and the mudcrabs are difficult to find since you have to forage for them, and that takes time. It's really not worth focusing time on this quest. Forage as you do other things, and if you find the mudcrabs finish the quest. The main point is to learn about the skull quest, and to have him tell you to tell the Furscales that "Oxyn sent me".
#Anonymous, Posted: Apr 30 2001 at 12:21 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Actually you are wrong in the saying that it is not worth the time. If a shaman wants to do the Skull Quests (numbered 1-6) then they have to complete this one first.

At lvl 14 I went to the windmill and guess what I foraged first time in zone - mudcrabs - look like grubs.
#Anonymous, Posted: Nov 19 2000 at 8:55 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) I would rate this stinking quest but there is not a rating for stupid waste of time. I started at level 4 and am now level 9 and still havent gotten a mud crab. Skiping this and going forward.

    Eat them, they're just food.

The intitial part of this quest where you have to forage mudcrabs from the Lake of Ill Omen is just a waste of your time. It is not necessary to advance to the Skull Quest. Just ask Heirophant Oxyn "What lost skulls" and he will request the three skulls found in the sewers of East Cabilis and your Cudgel of the Petitioner. Give him the three named skulls WAZ, MORGL, and LOGRIN and your kudgel. WAZ can be difficult to get, just keep clearing the spawns in the last hole of the sewer and he will eventually pop. Also the sewer is found by swimming left after crossing under the bridge in the water after leaving the Shamen Guild. Enter the tunnels that you find. Jumping out of the water can be a trick. Find the spot where your jump and up button or your page up and up button make you jump upwards. When your head is above the sides, move the pagedown or hit 5 and you should go forward. Hardest part of the quest in my opinion is jumping out of the water. Hope this helps.

I did this quest to night with my 5th level shaman. Took 65 minutes from getting the bowl to turning it in.
I got the Mud Crabs right where Anon said they would be. Took two trys.
    crabs in river
    # Aug 28 2000 at 10:33 AM Rating: Default
The crabs are not hard to find...if you know where to look. You must forage in or around the river that feeds the lake of ill omen. I tried other places, on the shore, in the open, near the gate, etc. and never found them. When i went to the river(i was in the river) I found them 3 out of 4 tries! Maybe luck, more likely the location. Try and see.

Like the other postings, I spent hours trying to forage for mud crabs. I circled the banks of the Lake of Ill Omen twice, foraging as often as possible. Finally, after cursing this fruitless quest, I foraged on the grass just before the entrance going back into Cabilis and got some! Ridiculous, isn't it? The real value is that it is a lead into the skull quest series. Good Luck!

At level 1 I entered the Lake zone, immediately pressed Forage and immediately got mudcrabs... As soon as forage was available again, I foraged mudcrabs a second time in a row. I am under the impression that they are more plentiful near the entrance to Cabilis, which WOULD make sense considering how low a level the quest is... it wouldn't make sense to send a young Iksar out among the Bandits and Battlemasters for a lowbie quest.

Most of the mudcrabs I've foraged have been right by the city gates, where they show up fairly often. But they seem to be rare further out in the actual hunting area, away from the gates.

As Pryss said, this makes sense: most people at the levels this quest is intended for won't survive going very far away from the guards in this zone.

    Try the riverbed
    # Jul 11 2000 at 1:54 PM Rating: Decent
When you inquire about mudcrabs he mentions the muddy river bed or some such thing. The river that leads from lake omen to the FV zone has always produced mudcrabs for me. Not in huge quantities but you can forage them there. Keeping hard left from Cabilis to the river is fairly safe. The larger problem is they look like fishing grubs, so unless you (or the woodelves and rangers) take time to ID each one, they tend to get tossed or trashed.
#Anonymous, Posted: Jul 08 2000 at 4:46 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Me and my friend also spent hours foraging and nearly starved to death. This quest is miserable. I still haven't seen the reward, but I'm certain it's not worth it. My advice is not to invest any time in this broken joke, or that EQ fix the foraging results.
    stinkin mudcrabs

spent 3 days over 6 hours lookin for these not so tasty little critters had two people helping even auctioned to buy some after many many deaths nd corpse runs is that club really worth it? ill tell ya after i smash some renegade shaman skulls with it!!!
    1 hour??
    # Jul 06 2000 at 9:03 AM Rating: Decent
You've got to be kidding on the one hour thing. I went through four levels fighting stuff in the Lake of Ill Omen, all while clicking 'forage' once every three minutes, trying to find the mud crabs. I got to where I could forage during battle, by turning off attack, hitting the button, then turning it back on. I went so far as to go to the lake itself, on rumors that they're more commonly foraged there. no luck.

Finally ended up finding them at a merchant- someone else had sold them to the merchant.

This took *weeks*, and got me three copper and a few wafers. Truly one of the more frustrating quests in the game.

I got my mudcrabs in like 10 minutes at the Lake. And at level 6 the quest gave me almost one bub of exp upon turning it in, so I had a good experience with it.

lol; hate to break it to you but you need to be on the EDGE of the lake; on the shore to forage them

shame on you for lying...I was on the shore for about 30 min to an hour and all I got was a flask of water.
