You say, 'Hail, Salmekia Treherth'

Salmekia Treherth says 'Welcome to Surefall Glade Etaan, the home of the Jaggedpine Treefolk. I help teach young druids the ways of our people. We have worshipers of both Karana, the Storm Lord, and Tunare, the All Mother, living here in the glade. If you are a new druid I will help you obtain a [suit of clothing] that will offer comfort and protection while working in the wilds and help protect you from the weapons of the Gnolls that wish to take these lands.'

You say, 'What suit of new clothing'

Salmekia Treherth says 'You must use this specially prepared Curing Kit to craft the clothing. Each article of clothing requires different materials for its construction. Do you plan on crafting Pine Druid [Gloves], Pine Druid [Boots], a Pine Druid [Bracer], a Pine Druid [Cap], Pine Druid [Leggings], Pine Druid [Sleeves], or a Pine Druid [Tunic]? When you have been outfitted and are ready I will tell you of a [task] that you can assist with.'

You say, 'What tunic'

Salmekia Treherth says 'To craft a Pine Druid Tunic you require four [silk thread], a ruined gnoll leather tunic, a giant whiskered bat fur, and a giant field rat pelt. Once you have the necessary components combine them in your Curing Kit with this Tattered Tunic Pattern.'

If anyone is still minded to collect these (rather than just spend their time on more enjoyable activities like levelling) then the full set will require:

Silk Thread* 17 (34 Spiderling silks)
Giant Field Rat Pelt* 3
Giant Field Rat Whiskers 6
Giant Whiskered Bat Fur 1
Large Whiskered Bat Fur 6
Large Field Rat Pelt* 1
Large King Snake Skin* 1 [* indicates tradeable items]

And will result in the following stats:

AC 30, HP 25, MP 35, STA 6, STR 3, AGI 11, DEX 10, WIS 6, CHA 5
SvPois 5, SvMag 5, SvDis 10, SvFire 5, SVCold 10

You can of course save yourself a bracer (1 silk thread & 1 GFR whiskers) if you are just going for the look, and maybe grab an extra large king snake skin for the scimitar quest.

Like other people posting I found the GFR spawn rate to be quite low even killing every rat in sight, mainly hanging around the hill beside the ruins since most rats walk over / past it, and whiskers drop rate was less than 1 in 4.

well the chain mail armor will not help in the leather quest armor for the druids (hmmm dam stoners) and large rats seem to drop the giant field rat wiskers.

Umm dude... The Chain mail armour is Ranger Quest, and the Large Rats drop Large Rat Whiskers. Only Large Field Rats dropped the Large Field Rat Whiskers. I know, because they didnt work in my druid quest. I ended up having to go hunt more Lg Field Rats for my Tunic after finally getting the Ruined Gnoll Tunic. :(
rats and bats

I posted this in the Ranger section, but since druids need some of the same stuff, I figured you folks may be interested....

I just finished the rat and bat portion of this quest, taking my Ranger from lvl 1 to 9 (twink free, thank you) before I finished. (Now for the Gnoll armor...) Just thought I'd put in my 2cp...

Before I start, let me remind you that Everquest's randomness makes it a diffent game for everyone. My observations are just that, observations, not facts. What seemed to work for me may not for you...

First, the bat part ain't that hard. The Giant Whiskered Bats aren't that uncommon of a spawn nor are the furs, so just level 'til they con blue and waste them 'til you get what you need. The Giant Field Rats are the pain, as you can tell by the other posts, so let's focus on those.

As if I have to say it, use Track... always... constantly...

It seemed to me they spawned more often to the right of the North Qeynos zone, facing the zone. They do spawn more the closer you get to the Qeynos zone in general, though there seems to be an area in the hills near the Haunted Ruins where they sometimes spawn.

The @#!%&* rats (of all types) seem to run towards the nearest trail when you get them to half hp. The problem is that the @#!%&* guards patrol that trail and tend to take your kill. If your target rat is anywhere near a trail, draw him away before you start wailing on him. That way you have room to kill him when he runs. This becomes MUCH easier once you hit 9th level (for rangers, 1st for you lucky druids) and can snare. (I SWEAR if he hadn't conned red that @#!%&* Guard Nash would have been MINE!!!)

I killed every rat I could find, regardless of level. Theory being that the time between Giant Field Rats (GFR, from now on) would be reduced 'cause the game would be spawning rats more often. Since I did that full time, I honestly can't say if it worked or not. I think it's a good theory though. And besides, not only did it give me something to do between GFR spawns, it gave me plenty of stuff to sell. The bones and eyes get 2gp each and then there's the Plague Rat Tails.... Use your gains to BUY the Ruined Gnoll Chain in Qeynos.

It seemed I got more Whiskers from GFRs that conned dark blue, at a 5/1 ratio; but that's prob random.

Get bags. You'll get lots of different stuff.

Man, do I ramble! I hope you find this helpful.

Good Hunting!

you cursed us druids for having snare. well guess what you get at lvl9 .....ummmmm snare. and why not wait another lvl like i did with my ranger and just kill for the chain armor the only ones that are hard to find is the tunic and the pants but those u have to buy for 19pp. no way ive gotten them and sold them for 2pp just auction that u want to buy that stuff in BB and youll get plenty of responses. id gladly sell for 5pp then for 2pp especially since i dont have to zone.

60 thorn drakelings? hell i killed 20 and had spare pristine ruined and regular scales, the ranger quests for the halfling is EASY compared to the human druid, ive done the whole set of halfling ranger which is easy compared to the human druid.... (halfling ranger tunic is a waste of time kill 5 billion bats and you'll never see a ribcage, go get an ivy etched =) )

Spent levels 5 to 10 working solely on this armor, and killed about 50 giant field rats before seeing my first whisker, but the found three on the next five kills.

Decided against going for the gloves and boots because 1) that would require 4 more whiskers, which I am not prepared to sacrifice time acquiring, and 2) there are better items out there for the foot and hand slots that are readily available, such as

Split-Paw Hide Gloves: same AC, one more for both DEX and WIS

Bear-hide boots: 1 more AC and the now have a magical enhancement that helps extend the duration of various buffs (give Chanda Miller a MQ bear hide and 15gp for the boots)

Quest was fun, and everything except the whiskers was fairly easy to procure -- can usually find the ruined gnoll armor on vendors in Qeynos or Halas. Great stats too. Will have to come back for the scimitar when I am older...
the easy way to get the rats to pop

I am a lvl 45 druid halfelf and I wanted to complete my full set of no drop armor (because I play on rallos zek) When I first started the quest the rats were rare and their drops were rarer. The giant field rats drop pelts about 1 in every 5 to 6 kills. This was averaged on one days of work for me (about 6 hours for everything needed) as I obtained a full set in one day.

The easiest and fastest way to get these guys to spawn is hunt along the fork in the road with the sign marker. A guard usually wanders around this area. Run around smacking everything you can and train the mobs onto the guard, this increases the spawn rate of the giant field rats. Try to smack several bats and other rats into him, they seemed to trigger the giant field rats the most. Once I started doing this I was getting whiskers 1 in about every 4 or 5 kills and pelts every other kill because they spawned more frequently rather than running around tracking them (which I so foolishly did at first.
The rats seemed to pop near the left and right qeynos walls in the hills before the zone point.

Hope I helped and if I did rate my post!

Nnanji, Rangers get it at level 1. And as for the difficulty of fidning the items, you haven't seen anything till you've killed about 60 thorn drakelings, 20 large fruit bats, 40 giant rat pelts, 40 giant frit bats(halfling ranger quests)... you get my point. Our boots arent even magic! Uber wisp slayer indeed =(

This armor is DRUID ONLY, Human and Half-Elf ONLY. No other classes/races may wear this.

I hunt the Innoruuk Server.

The rarest Drop for some pieces of the armor is the Giant Field Rat Whisker. The mob (Giant Field Rat) does spawn in some quantity in Qeynos Hills area but the Drop is Rare. The mob spawns mostly on the plain near the NQeynos zone, but also in the hills near there as you head towards Surefall Glade. They rarely seem to appear in the area immediately near SFG entrace.

What makes hunting these creatures hard is the numbe of players who are working this new quest and the fact that there is also a new Ranger Armor quest that also use these whiskers. Rangers get tracking at level 6(?) and can often get to the mobs before a druid can, who doesn't get tracking until MUCH later. This can be frustrating to a Druid when rangers are also hunting the mob.

Druids should group with a Ranger with tracking while doing this quest, especially while it is still a new quest. Be prepared for a lot of rat killing. Giant rats and Large Field Rats also drop a Whisker, but these Whiskers DO NOT work in this quest.

The Ruined Gnoll armor pieces drop MAINLY on Gnolls, but a friend told me (while helping me scavenge up the pieces) that he got a couple of peices off of Scrawnys. I would recommend sticking to Gnolls. However, in the Ranger Armor Quest, the Ruined Chain Armor drops off of many different gnolls, including Brawny's and Guardians. I took my 38 Pally in to harvest these items and went deep. I found the pieces (chain) on many, the leather on a few.

Both the Ranger Version and Druid Version of these new Armor Quests are all green in coloring.

If your a druid, find a ranger and bribe it, cause those giant field rats are really hard to find! I gave up after I got enough for my tunic, leggings, and helm.

Yes, a ranger can help you, but will he be nice enough to do so? Not sure since his newbie quests require the same drops with the exception of the gnoll piece. Rangers used ruined chain instead of leather.

I have been hunting rats for the past 3 days and only gotten 3 whiskers, and NO pelts. The bats are the easy part, with the gnolls being just a pure nusience.

yeah that is one of the bad things is the drops are rare and both druid and ranger need them....I wish I could have been there when they decided to add these armors...
Typical day at VI:

" Hey Dave i got a new armor idea....
Yeah really what is it??
We give Druids and Rangers of SFG new armors and new drops.
Sounds good to me...but we need to make sure we do not add to many more new mobs that would make it easy.
Yeah how about this we take the mobs there rename them and give them a few rare drops...
Sounds good...and even better than that lets make the armor use the same rare drops so we can sit and watch the druids and rangers bicker and fight over the drops that always gives me a rise.....

Man what sadistic people at VI....
