Introductions

Maesyn Trueshot may be found in the ranger guild in Kelethin at -451.03, 520.32, 116.28.

You say, 'Hail Maesyn Trueshot'

Maesyn Trueshot says 'Welcome to Kelethin, ______! I am Maesyn Trueshot, commander of Faydark's Champions. We are the finest marksmen in all of Norrath. With our trusty [Trueshot longbows] we can miss no target regardless of the distance or the conditions.'

You say, 'What Trueshot longbows?'

Maesyn Trueshot says 'The Trueshot Longbow was created by my famed father, Eldin Trueshot. It is quite accurate and takes a ranger's skill to wield. We use our new recruits to [gather materials] needed by my father. We shall soon begin to release the formula to good elves so all may fletch such a bow.'

You say, 'I will gather materials.'

Maesyn Trueshot says 'Take this pack. Go to Kaladim, find Trantor Everhot and ask for dwarven wire. Then go to Freeport to meet Jyle Windshot. Search the inns for him and ask him for treant wood. Then, collect some spiderling silk from spiderlings and finally, in Steamfont, we have the permission of the gnomes to use any micro servos we find while destroying rogue spiders. Combine them all and return the pack to me.'

You receive a Material Pack, a 4-slot MEDIUM container.

Dwarven Wire

Trantor Everhot may be found wandering around North Kaladim.

You say, 'Hail, Trantor Everhot'

Trantor Everhot says 'Yes, yes!! I am a very busy man. I've got blueprints to work on, [dwarven wire] to perfect and formulae to calculate. In between those tasks, I have to find time to head down to Irontoe's and down a few Tumpy Tonics.'

You say, 'What dwarven wire?'

Trantor Everhot says 'Oh!! Interested in my dwarven wire, are you? Many are. I have no problem letting you use a spool, but I have to warn you that I have not perfected the strength of it yet. I will make you a trade. A couple of [Tumpy Tonics] for a spool.'

You say, 'What Tumpy Tonics?'

Trantor Everhot says 'Aaah!! I love Tumpy Tonics. They were created by Tumpy Irontoe. He was once a member of the famed Irontoe Brigade. Since they disbanded and left for parts unknown he decided to stay in Kaladim and open Irontoe's, the finest well in Faydwer.'

You can get Tumpy Tonics from Tumpy Irontoe or brew them yourself (1 Kiola Nut + 1 Water Flask in a brew barrel, trivial 135). You'll need four of them for the quest, so make sure you get enough. Give two to Trantor Everhot unstacked.

Trantor Everhot says 'Hey!! Only one?!!'

Trantor Everhot says 'Great!! I did not have the time to get down to Irontoe's today. Here. Like I said. A spool of dwarven wire. Now go away. I ain't sharing these tonics.'

You receive Dwarven Wire. Give him another two Tumpy Tonics unstacked for the second piece of Dwarven Wire.

Treant Wood

Jyle Windshot may be found in West Freeport (a different version of him may be found in East Freeport, but that's for a different quest). Make sure he cons amiably or above.

You say, 'Hail, Jyle Windshot'

Jyle Windshot says 'Hello. Might I ask what you are looking for?'

You say, 'I am looking for treant wood.'

Jyle Windshot says 'You are a new courier from the Faydarks. I am sorry I did not stay closer to the docks. I hear that part of Freeport is dangerous and is filled with many rogues. I shall require a new Small Lantern in trade for the Treant Wood.'

You can buy a Small Lantern at many vendors, including Innkeep Palola in North Freeport and Innkeep Harold in East COmmonlands. Give Jyle the lantern.

Jyle Windshot says 'Thanks, friend. I have run a long way to get here in time. Mostly at night. I lost my lantern in a card game in Highkeep.'

Your faction standing with Faydarks Champions has been adjusted by 1.
Your faction standing with King Tearis Thex has been adjusted by 1.
Your faction standing with Clerics of Tunare has been adjusted by 1.
Your faction standing with Soldiers of Tunare has been adjusted by 1.
Your faction standing with Crushbone Orcs has been adjusted by -1.
You gain experience!!

You will probably receive Wooden Shards, which identifies as "Treant Wood Shards." Occasionally you instead receive A Wooden Heart, which identifies as "A Treant Heart." This is used in the subsequent Rain Caller quest.

Other Ingredients

Spiderling silk drops from spiders around the world. Rogue clockworks in Steamfont drop Micro Servos. You'll need at least two Micro Servos, so make sure to collect spares.

The Finale

In the Material Pack, combine 1 Dwarven Wire, 1 Wooden Shards, 1 Spiderling Silk, and 1 Micro Servo to craft a Pack of Materials. Give this to Maesyn Trueshot.

Maesyn Trueshot says 'I shall see that my father gets the materials. I hope this can be of use to you. It will serve as your starting point toward fletching a Trueshot longbow. It is unfortunate that we are unable to enchant the bow to its [next incarnation], but it is still a fine weapon. You do know the [correct components] needed for fletching such a bow, do you not?'

Your faction standing with Faydark's Champions has been adjusted by 25.
Your faction standing with King Tearis Thex has been adjusted by 6.
Your faction standing with Clerics of Tunare has been adjusted by 6.
Your faction standing with Soldiers of Tunare has been adjusted by 6.
Your faction standing with Crushbone Orcs has been adjusted by -6.
You gain experience!!
You receive 6 gold from Maesyn Trueshot.
You receive 1 platinum from Maesyn Trueshot.

You say, 'What correct components?'

Maesyn Trueshot says 'Now that I have crafted the Treant Bow Staff, you shall need one Planing Tool, one Treant Bow Staff, one Micro Servo and one spool of Dwarven Wire. These items will be used with your Fletching Kit as all other bows. Be forewarned, only a Master Fletcher can create such a bow and even a master fails from time to time. Good Luck.'

You receive a Treant Bowstave. Combine this in a fletching kit with a Micro Servo, a piece of Dwarven Wire, and a Planing Tool to craft a Trueshot Longbow (trivial 235).

Here's what I suggest for the up and coming rangers in our guild who are making their first attempt at their Trueshot:

Fletching skill - 135
Wisdom - 90

Enough supplies for 10 attempts.

You may have a success on your very first try, it may take you all 10. It's likely with these stats that you'll make your bow within 6 attempts though.

My fletching was 135 and wisdom 92 when i started this quest. I must have failed a dozen times before a high level enchanter gave me a wis buff (boosted wis to about 130 something). Wouldn't you know, i succeeded that time. the lesson is 3 fold: 1) get your fletching above 100 before trying 2) get a wis buff from chanty 3)make sure you have enough materials for several tries while you're buffed.

just to be clear a high wisdom/intel will help you to GAIN skill when you make an attempt, but only your skill level itself determines if you succeed any given time. i myself succeeded once in 3 tries at skill of 68 (dumb luck i'm sure) then in 5 tries at 105. good idea to master fletching before risking those hard to obtain servos.

i have tried to make it 4 times with no success, fleetching skill is only 109, wisdom is 90, the hardest part is getting the microservos, i have enough woodchips, dwarvin wire, and spider silks for 15 more tries. need to make another run to steamfront for microservos. Oh well, maybe next time.

try it with me, steamFONT, not steamfront.

Not picking on you particularly, but a lot of people seem to think it's Steamfront, as though there were a Steamback. I grew up with my first character -- a gnome -- there, so I have a special attachment to the nice quiet zone :-) (besides, it's a pretty darn good newbie zone, and quiet to boot)

I was not having much success on creating a Trueshot until someone suggested I improve my INT. It was 80 and my WIS was 125. I invested in INT equip to bring it up to 90 and my success rate at skill 179 has been 5 out of 12.

I really think there is a random factor here. I have seen people who have failed about 20 times with fletching over 100 but I succeeded first time with fletching at 52. It seems to be easier to get at lower level if it is your first one. I have failed 4 more attempts so making them for profit seems to be difficult, at least for me. Good luck to all!

how good at fletching do you need to be to make the bow?
RE: how good at fleching
# May 24 2002 at 9:25 AM Rating: Decent
The Trueshot should be trivial at 235 (I don't know from personal exp yet, but this is what everything I have read says).

I strongly recommend not even trying until at least 135 unless you really really don't mind failing all those many times. Your time and cash are far better spent making arrows to get your level up to where you will only fail every few times. I made my first Trueshot with a skill level in the 160's, and at 182 I'm 2 for 3.

Honestly, I find it silly that anyone would even attempt it before then. Seriously, folks, if you need one that badly and your skill level isn't past 135 yet, just spend the cash to buy one from an elder. Or better yet, spend the cash making arrows and get yourself to a point where you can do it on your own.

You could have 0 fletching skill and still make this bow....if you're REALLY lucky. I made mine at skill 155 or thereabouts, didn't get a trivial message either so it's somewhat harder than that.
RE: how good at fleching
# May 23 2002 at 5:22 PM Rating: Decent
I didn't have any luck with this till at least 120 or so in fletching. Even then there is a good chance of failure. At 170 it is still not trivial, so I recomend getting enough for at least 5 attempts minimum. I usually would try to get a stack of every component.
Remember it takes 4 Kiolas for every attempt and they don't stack. (It takes two kiola's for every tumpy tonic and two tumpy tonics for every dwarven wire.)
BTW This is a great way for a young ranger to make good cash; everyone building a ranger tweak will want to buy one. Also they are worth every copper of 200pp. It takes a lot of plat to bring fletching to 120 or so. I hope this helps.

I did get luck and make this with an 85 Fletching skill. I've had no luck since. I believe the trivial is over 200.

It's a great bow at for young Rangers. Heck, it's a great bow for old Rangers!

A bit of advice on fletching for those who are interested.

Firstly, scour the web and get a list of arrows, their trivial value and cost - this is essential. I think there is a good one at angelflame.com.

Secondly, Get your CHA up while fletching especially at the higher levels. I found the easiest way to do this is to send an OOC for a jeweller and get them to make you the best you can afford. I got my CHA up from 75 to 115 with earrings, bracelets and a necklace for 100pp or so (For this I searched the net to find out which jewelery I wanted). With a high CHA you can buy the components cheaper and sell them back to the same vendor without losing so much cash. When you get onto steel shafts you can just about break even.

Thirdly - be very very patient. Do it for a night then hunt the next night and so on.

Lastly - it is worth it. I've made and sold 8 trueshots for between 150 and 200pp each. I've also made a few hundred pp selling other bows.

Just read my own post and I think it could have been clearer......

You can make arrows and sell them to players for a profit but it takes a lot more time - I can go hours without selling any. I found the cheapest way was to get my CHA up, make the cheapest arrows that will increase my skill then sell the arrows back to the vendor. I am now making arrows with steel shafts and if I succeed 90% of the time I can sell the arrows back to the vendor for almost the same cost as the components.

I have been building up my fletching skill to master and am quickly running out of money. The arrows made to increase a master fletcher are WAY to expensive to just shoot at monsters. Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions as to where to sell high end arrows and who might actually buy them. Thanks so much.

"(4) Lastly, you need treant wood. You must travel to Freeport and give Jyle Windshots (note the Jyle you want is in West Freeport - be wary of imposters) a small lantern or, possibly if you are a Ranger, your guild tunic and he will give you some treant wood.

you can give him lantern after lanter (store bought) and get the stackable wood chips. Give wood chips to emil parsini in toxula forest to raise Erudin Merchant and guards factions.

Wood Chips work for treant wood, i gave Jyle 21 lanterns got 20 wood chips 1 wood hart, no treant wood, however the chips worked when given with other stuff to Maesyn.

I went to OOT, and bought 16 Kiola nuts. I gave them to Tumpy with the 16 flasks, and got 16 Tumpy Tonics.

However, when I gave the 16 Tumpy Tonics to Trantor Everhot, he only gave me 2 dwarven wire? Is there a way in which I can get a better ration for the tonics? This seems ridiculous, that he has to get 8 tonics per wire. I've heard that others have gotten 2 for 1. Any help would be appreciated.

RE: Note on Dwarven Wire
# Apr 29 2002 at 3:03 PM Rating: Decent
If you give Trantor 4 Tumpy Tonics at a time (unstacked) then he will give you 2 Dwarven wire. You should have gotten 8 Dwarven wire for your 16 Tumpy Tonics. Did you give them to him all at once? If so then go back and give the 4 unstacked, or pray you get the Trueshot on your first attempt.

My experience with the servos
# Apr 18 2002 at 7:20 AM Rating: Decent
My wife did this last night and we figure we'd throw our two cents in.

Go the to the windmills and hunt the medium sized clockworks there, especialy if someone (or a group of someones) is hunting near the mino caves for exp. I had 5 drop of them in an hour, where as the bigger clockworks dropped 5 in a 6-7 hour period When you're killing on average 5 clockworks every 10 min or so and they arn't dropping it gets frustrating. But...if you like long waits or are looking to make some extra money feel free to hunt the bigger clockworks and kill harpys, and elementals. In total I spent 10 hours and made 250+ pp (kept all silver and copper).
Trueshot attempts.
# Apr 15 2002 at 1:39 AM Rating: Default
I tried 11 times and failed every one of them with a skill of 132.

Finally suceeded on my 3rd attempt with a skill of 153.

Someone in my guild suceeded on his 6th attempt at 127.

The most frustrating part of this quest is getting the servos. One thing is to check with the vendors at the windmills and just outside Ak'anon.. I think they only have them if someone's sold them one but if they do, they only cost 1cp.
my success
# Apr 13 2002 at 12:17 PM Rating: Decent
Finally made my trueshot last night with my skill up to 147. Seems there is a random element thrown into the success rate for apparently ppl sometimes fail at a higher levels and sometimes succeed at lower lvls. Not surprizing since it doesnt trivial till over 200.
I found most of my microservos on giant clockworks (they list as rogue clockworks btw, they just look bigger) by the minataur caves. I also found some by the entrance, and some by the windmills on the runaways and smaller rogues.
I never got attacked once on the island buying kiola nuts (i was lvl 18) and i always made it back to the boat on time without sow. The boat only stops on the correct island on the journey from Freeport to Butcherblock, not vice versa. The boat reaches the island shortly after leaving Freeport so dont leave the puter to make a tea or whatever :o). Just make sure you go to the hut straight off the end of the docks (maybe a few degrees to the right) and buy from the female merchant on the left as you enter. I just clicked on the kiola and clicked purchase as quickly as i could. Should have enough time to buy 30 nuts (rem - did without sow and the nuts dont stack)and make it back to the boat just-on-time.
I believe it is possible to make a trueshot at a low level but most likely you will fail many many times. If you dont have the cash to fletch up to the high 140's (it cost me 200pp to get to 147) then i suggest one of two things:
1) that you keep trying to make the trueshot for as long as it takes. Your skill will increase with your failures (albeit much more slowly than with fletching arrows). You will need to load up all your slots with empty backpacks and buy as many kiola nuts as possible. You will miss the boat but it is more time economical to wait for the next one than to make the trip repeatedly and the boat ride is the most time consuming thing next to the microservos (remember it takes 2 kiola nuts to make one dwarven wire so if you only get 30 nuts that is 15 tries at the trueshot). I have read that it is dangerous to hang on the island and that you should stay on the edge of the pier while waiting (the boats timed on a 20min cycle for me)
2)I suggest that when you are hunting the microservos near minataur to attemt to get "swirling mist" off the steam elementals. This is a rare drop and is worth at least 50pp to some casters. I discovered its value by chance and it proved to be a winfall for me. I found 4 of them in the week or so that i hunted near the minataur caves and if you do the math you will realize that they alone are what allowed me to finance my fletching skill. You must sell them to a caster. I never figured out if the guy i sold them to was a wiz or a magician or an enchanter, but he was either one of them. Merchants will pay next to nothing for them. Remember, they are an extremely rare drop. I only found 4 and killed at lest 50 steam elementals. Thats prolly why these casters will pay so much for them. If you are a good fandangler maybe you could get more than 50pp?

As for Jyle Winshot, make sure you see the one in West Freeport. The imposter is in East Freeport near the docks. I have been temped to kill the imposter (he is green to me at lvl 18) but i worry about faction. You can buy small lanterns at a place just to the right of the bank in North Freeport. I have only ever bought the small ones and they cost some silver to me each. Jyle's trade window has 4 slots so you can give him 4 lanterns at a time. He will give you some shards of wood for each lantern. Once he gave me a heartwood that is used in the next level of ranger bow called the Rainkeeper. I put that in the bank for another day.
You also have to get spiderling silks which are easilly attained from spiderlings or widow hatchlings.
When i made my 20 or so attemps at lvl 131 i just sat near Maesyn Trueshot in the ranger guild in Kelethin, targeted him, typed "i will gather materials.", placed one spiderling silk, one microservo, one dwarven wire, and one shards of wood (supposedly it is treant wood), in the bag he gives you, combined, gave to Maesyn, got the treant wood bow-staff, placed staff in fletchkit with one dwarven wire, one microservo, and one hand plane tool. When i hit combine i always got my plane tool back and lost all the other ingredients until i finally succeeded after fletching my skill to lvl 147. It's hell making all those arrows but the good thing about it is that now that i have finally made my bow i can easilly make good arrows cheap and 100% successfully.
There are lots of guides from much more skilled rangers out there with far better detailed how-to's than this post but i thought i would sum up how i succeeded for those of you just starting out.

correctionne!! 30 kiola nuts gives ou 7 tries at the truebow. You need 2 dwarven wires per try - one to give to maesyn for the treant bow stave and one to make the bow. Also i re-evaluated my costs and i am closer to 300pp just to fletch my skill to 147 and purchase the other ingredients (ie kiola's, lanterns, etc..)

Hello all :) Tonight I just fletched my very own trueshot Bow with 151 skill and 10 fails under my belt since skill lvl 84. Just wanted to share my experiences in Steamfont hunting Rogue Clockworks... I think I may have found a pattern and a Placeholder for the clockworks in SM, they spawn in a few places and do not seem to be as random as I have been lead to believe. The PH I believe are the Rogue Cleaners which spawn in 2 major spots in SM. The first location is roughly the size of a lvl 15 rangers tracking skill maxed out, and is in the surrounding hills right when you enter the zone. The second location is near and around the windmills. There seems to be a pattern linking the two locations because there are hardly any Rogue Cleaners at both spots at the same time. (NOTE: TRACK IS ESSENTIAL) If you begin killing the rogue cleaners in one of the two areas, clockworks will begin spawning. eventually you will kill all the cleaners and clockworks in that area and the entire cleaner/clockwork spawn will relocate to the other location. From what i have seen it revolves back and forth from location to location. There is no guarantee that your going to spawn a clockwork as soon as you kill a cleaner since it is a rare spawn, but i have seen it happen. It felt like i just pushed the clockwork spawn button a few times :)
One more notable spot for killing clockworks is of course by the mino caves. the only pattern ive seen there is KILL EVERYTHING!
slavers, harpys, elementals, drakes, etc. I hope this helps someone on thier quest for the Trueshot. the spawns might vary from server to server or I just might have lost my mind somewhere in SM and imagined a pattern... either way it will give you something to do while your running around like a madman chasing little clicking spiders! Take care Brothers and sisters be good to eachother :)

It appears that there is a fixed number of mobs in steamfont so if no-one is hunting no more clockworks appear. Kill anything (I do it up near mino caves) and there is a good chance a rogue clock will appear. I found killing drakes, elemantals and harpys all helped to spawn Clocks. Got 7 servos in an hour this way.
