The description says:
Combine Sharp Dark Reflection Short Sword with a Sharpening Stone in a forge (trivial 19) to make Ebon Drake Scales.
I tried this on live, and it does not work. I do see magelo thinks that sharpening the rough dark reflection staff makes the ebon drake scales - I'll try that next but it makes no sense. You'd have to do another class's newbie quest, sharpen a staff and then get scales for your own quest.
I think this is just broken now, have no seen the scales drop.
So if you sharpen the rough dark reflection staff - you get ebon drake scales. So yes, you have to do the evil caster's kill and turn-in, to get a rough dark reflection staff, sharpen that... and get the ebon drake scale you need.
I'll update the description to be accurate.
WHY it's written this way is a mystery to me.
I suspect its a bug and the ebon drake scales landed in the item DM where the polished staff would have... Gotta be..

However, if you get your hands on the Rough Dark Reflection Staff, by killing Winlix and turning his staff info Tilkzog, you can shapen that with a sharpening stone in a forge - and tada... ebon drake scales. Give the Sword and the Scales to Clockwork SmithXIII in the Ak'Anon mines. Clockwork SmithXIII fashions the ebon drake scales into a grip on the hilt of the sword and carves some delicate runes into the blade. 'click... wrrrr... a sword for you sir. Click... wrrr.' Donlix is found at neg160, neg1900 among a group of other goody-goody gnome NPCs, the ones the other evil classes must kill for their newb quest. If you pull Donlix, his three buddies will most likely come, too. So, you'll be fighting a Paladin, Wizard, Rogue and Cleric!

Is the scale called, exactly, [Ebon Drake Scale] or can it be one of the lesser scales, such as [Pristine Lesser Ebon Drake Scale]?

Well I have a 12th SK on Vallon.I was just exp'n near the Mino caves and kiled a Drake it dropped the scale.So it does drop.Oh another thing the rat obsolete modles in the mines of malf. drop the plates we need for our boots and gloves.

It has to do with this quest because after you turn in the sword, you only get a Dull sword. Then you must sharpen it with a sharpening stone. once sharpened, you have to turn the sword in, along with a ebon drake scale, to Clockwork VIII or something like that who is also in the mines (under smithing supplies) to get the completed sword.

Where is he located in Steamfont Mnts? Does he spawn in a spacific place and does he have body guards??

I've managed to complete the quest for this weapon. Sent the pic in, hope it gets posted.

4dam 27del, weight is 6.0. It is magic, no drop, and lore. +1 to str and +1 to int.
Now, this would be a good level 10 newbie weapon, except for the fact you probally could not complete the quest till level 15. Donlix with bring all of his friends unless they all con green and Hunting Lesser Ebon Drakes around Meldrath's is a real pain, as the rolling spawn from hero bracer campers produces the hero and the Kobold Missionary alot. Worse, the ebon scale is very rare, as is most of the pieces needed for the armor.
I've filled out a feedback report to Verant asking them to improve the weapon. Honestly, by the time you obtain it, it is indeed nothing more than a trophy weapon.

I managed to finish the full set of quest equipment by level 15, including this lame weapon. At level 15, my gnome shadowknight was getting her tail kicked by all of Donlix' buddies. But I have a level 42 druid on another account who buffed her fully before the fight with Skin Like Diamond, Strength of Stone, Spirit of Wolf, Regeneration, and Shield of Spikes.
As he sat down to avoid faction hits, my SK hit Donlix with her dot, bringing all four of them. Her plan was quite simple: kill Donlix and run for zone (LFay), then run as fast back to camp and get Donlix' Short Sword. It helped that she still had her harm touch, but they took her down to her last bubble of health when she zoned. Regen and SoW basically saved her skin.
She got her weapon; she has her full set of newbie equipment. She can proudly say that she completed them all. Her combat skills and most of her arcane skills are almost maxxed, also.
For those of you who don't like twinking, She never received any item from my druid, even tho he is a master smith (177), and I have a grandmaster jeweler (205). After seeing this stuff, it is time to twink...
I rate this item junk, the other items slightly more difficult than the recommended level, but at least better than cloth or leather that I would have gotten.

I am not yet high enough to hunt Donlix, but I found 2 ebon drake scales from the lesser drakes near the Minotaurs in less than an hour. I guess I was just lucky. I'm having trouble with clockwork spider legs, I haven't seen one yet.

Well, I botched this drake scale part of the quest. Having gotten fed up with looking for a drake scale with no luck I tried handing int he sharpened sowrd with a moss covered drake scale (groun spawn) and he ate them both.
I pretty much assumed the weapon stats would be disapointing so thats not my main concern with wether its worth it or not. I want to know what the sowrd looks like. Does it have a special appearance (all black maybe?) or does it look like an ordinary shortsowrd.

Im sorry to tell ya, but it looks like a normal boring old short sword.
Yeah, I did the quest, it's a 4dmg 27 delay btw, and honestly, it's probably not worth the time at the level that you can kill the sword bearer, but a lot of higher ups have been passing through steamfont on drinal lately, and I'm pretty sure there's a similar happening in other servers, most higher ups, if asked nicely, will aid a lowbie if they have nothing to do. I got my sword at level 7, then took 3 levels to get the drake scales, check vendors for those.

The Ebon Drake Scale that I looted for my sword dropped of a Lesser Ebon Drake Northeast of the Windmills in Steamfont. I killed about 16 lessers over the course of 3 hours and only 1 scale dropped in that time.

The quest results in a 4 damage 28 delay shortsword with +1 str and I think +1 int. Waste of time in my opinion as anyone high enough to finish the quest can easily get better weapons. I tried soloing Donlix and his friends as a level 15 Shadowknight and got my gnome butt kicked good. You have to take down 2 paladins, a cleric, and a wizard. They were all green to my level 30 warrior and did not agro when I attacked Donlix. So I would say, wait until you are 20 or so to solo Donlix and then why would you bother? There's bigger and better things out there for a level 20 Shadowknight to get. The Screaming Mace you can get at 15-16, for example.
Gnome Shadowknights got the shaft on this quest! The Gnome Paladin version results in a kick-a__ sword.
I say forget this quest and just get the armor. If they ever put in an upgrade quest, then by all means get the sword. But since there isn't yet, forget it.

Well I'm at least glad to see that I'm not the only one having extreme trouble getting an Ebon Drake scale. I even went to the trouble of doing the turn in with the sharp sword and a Ebon drakeling scale. No luck. The clockwork smith just ate it. So. Obviously it has to be an Ebon DRAKE scale. I've been killing all the lesser ebon drakes I've seen using my ranger and tracking. I've got numerous "Ebon Drake Wing" and "Ebon Drake Bile". NO "Ebon Drake Scale". I personally dont think they added the drop off them. Either that or its REALLY rare. I think I've had every other class drop possible including the runaway clockwork motors and brownie brains which seem rare. The drop has to be messed up. If anyone else has succeeded in getting an Ebon Drake Scale to drop please post it and what the result of the quest is.
Ok where did you find the ebon drakeling scale? I can't find them at all but I have several ebon drake scales (off of the drakes in front of the mino tunnels).

Once you kill Donlix Bonkle and get his sword (he is in Steamfont with his band of followers) you give it back to Garret and he passes you back a 'Dull short sword of Dark Reflections' he then tells you to combine it in a forge with a sharpening stone untill it has a keen edge, this results in a 'Sharp Short Sword of Dark Reflections' he also tells you that once you have sharpened it to take both it and an Ebon drake scale to Clockwork Smith XXVII (or whatever there is only once such smith in the mines of disfunction) who will then finish the blade for you. I'm not sure what sword you get back as I'm still trying to get a drake scale.
