You say, 'Hail, Hibbs Rootenpaw'

Hibbs Rootenpaw says 'Hello! I am Hibbs Rootenpaw, Master Druid of the Storm Reapers. If you have not yet ventured beyond Rivervale beware of the [dangers] that lurk through out the lands beyond our shire. There are many evil beings that would not hesitate to end the life of a young druid of the Storm Reapers. '

You say, 'What Dangers'

Hibbs Rootenpaw says 'The Teir'Dal, or Dark Elves, to the east have slain a number of brave Storm Reapers that are attempting to cleanse the Nektulos Forest of the corruption caused by the Teir'Dals evil magics. To the west, the human farmers in the Plains of Karana are beset upon by vicious tribes of Gnolls and must valiantly defend their farms. Closer to home the Death Fist Orcs and Goblin Clans Runnyeye and Pick Claws all attempt to control the Misty Thicket and chop down its sturdy trees for lumber. If you are planning on leaving the safety of Rivervale I advise you to deliver this note to Bartle Barnick. He will help you get yourself outfitted for survival in the wilds. When he has outfitted you in a suit of protective leather return here for [further instruction]. '

You say, 'Further instructions.'

Hibbs Rootenpaw says 'If you feel you are ready for the responsibility of an important task then you may assist with the [investigation] of the ancient cursed fields in the Misty Thicket. The crumbling walls that surround the cursed fields are believed to have been constructed around the same time as the ruined tower and the great wall of Cetelt. We Storm Reapers believe that the walls once surrounded beautiful and fruitful gardens. The arrogance of the caretaker of the gardens offended the Gods and in turn the gardens were cursed with disease and an evil power that animates the corpses of the dead. The Scarecrow, Old Gourdhead, stands in one of these two fields and warns passers by that it is an accursed place. Recently someone has been placing rats in the fields to become diseased. '

*Hand note to Bartle Barnick*

Bartle Barnick says 'It is good to see another of our young people choose the humble life of a druid of Karana. I have assembled that will allow you to construct some protective leather garments to keep you comfortable in the wilds and help turn aside the weapons of the Storm Reapers enemies. The required components for the leather vary according to which piece of Moss Toe Leather you are planning on crafting. Do you wish to craft a [moss toe cap], a [moss toe bracer], [moss toe gloves], [moss toe boots], [moss toe sleeves], [moss toe leggings], or a [moss toe tunic]. '

You say, 'Moss Toe Tunic'

Bartle Barnick says 'To assemble a Moss toe Tunic you will require four [silk thread], an undamaged mossy rat pelt, and a giant wood spider thorax. Once you have the necessary components combine them in your Mail Assembly Kit with this Tattered Tunic Pattern. '

I started the Moss Toe Armor quest on Friday Morning and finished by Friday night.
Thats right, I got all the pieces within a 24 hour period of about 6-10 hours playing.
Didnt take me long to get the pieces at all.
Not worth it!

Really people! if you are a druid and are level 8 and begin this quest, you are wasting your time! A - the exp from killing the spiders wont help you ding and, B - the item only has 7 AC, and +2Wis. you may not be the richest druid out there, but go to Crushbone and level up!

I've found that you can purchase this occassionally from the merchants in the Paladin guild building. I have purchased one from the dude on the right as you walk in the building, and I've seen one on the dude on the left...but didn't need 2.

A few of the answers anyway...

The "giant wood spider thorax" drops off the giant wood spider only. The large wood spider found inside the gates does not drop it.

The "undamaged mossy rat pelt" drops from the diseased rats. It is a fairly uncommon drop apparently; I have killed 20 or 30 and only seen 1 undamaged pelt. I have a stack of 15 ruined pelts.

The "silk threads" are made by combining 2 unstacked spider silks in a sewing kit. 4 silk threads would require 8 spider silks. I have never heard of anyone failing an attempt at silk threads.

If the items will not combine in the mail assembly kit, I would verify a few things. First, make sure the threads are unstacked. Next verify that the correct patterns and items are correct. Often the wrong pattern can be placed in a box as all patterns look alike. If these are all done and still no luck, there is a bug.

Good luck adventurers

Have got all of the bits (after quite a wait for the pelt) but after I give the message from Hibbs to Bartle and say [moss toe tunic] nothing happens! Is this quest broken? or do I have to say something more specific?

Any help would be appreciated.

I can confirm the other anonymous poster's tip on saying MOS toe tunic instead of MOSS toe tunic. It seems to be a typo. All of the quests work if you type moss with one S at the end.

You have to say," I want to craft Moss Toe Tunic"
Did this yesterday

Actually I'm pretty sure they recently were broken. Two days ago I made the gloves and boots just saying "moss toe boots" and he gave me the pattern. I've tried every deviation of "moss toe tunic" and all the other pieces, no reply.

You're very close. I believe you have to say "I want moss toe tunic" or "I want tunic". Just saying the words "moss toe tunic" won't do it.

Wow you all have the worst luck ever, I killed like 10 spiders in a group and got the 5 rare drop things I needed, the pattella, the femur, the thorax. I got an undamaged mossy rat pelt after 3 kills and got 2 regular ones for the other quests soon after. I now have the full suit of armor including the weapon, and IT'S GREAT plus you even look cooler than some of the higher level druids. Good luck.
Pelts
# May 20 2002 at 11:50 PM Rating: Default
I've killed so many diseased rats. I have 9 mossy pelts and 23 ruined mossy pelts. Still NO UNDAMAGED PELTS. I'm sure that after I kill 20 rats someone else comes along and kills the one with the undamaged pelt. Oh well, I'll just keep trying.

ROTFLMAO, I was helping a newbie the other day, the first two rats he killed both had undamaged mossy rat pelts, and later I got 3 regular ones.

Mail Assembly Kit

When assembling the Moss Toe Tunic, I had my silk threads stacked. This caused the Mail Assembly Kit to not combine the items into the Moss Toe Tunic. So make sure your items are NOT stacked or you may think it's a bug (instead of bad programming). ;-)

Certainly a good thing to remember!
This also applies when your making stuff as a skill (e.g. baking). Never stack items when combining, always use the CTRL key to pick the items one at a time.

GIant Wood Spider Thorax

On Drinal anyway, this drop seems to be very uncommon. I have killed 73 Giant Wood Spiders so far and still no Thorax drop. But, patience is a vertue. 8)>

My notes on these quests
# Apr 30 2002 at 9:30 AM Rating: Good
I did the quests with my 32 druid.
It took awhile, but here are the number of kills that it took me to get a full set :

In order to get the required pelts 112 rats.
I was left waiting for the third "mossy" having got the "undamaged mossy" after about 80 rats.
I ended up with over 20 ruined.
My hunting method for these was to go to the pumkin head surrounded by rats and skellies, let them agro on me then cast tremor (120 pt DD AE) to kill them 4 at a time.
I could clear the area on one set of mana then med up by the time they repop.
Fast and dull.

For Large Wood spiders my tally was 37. but I think that I killed too many as I ended up with 3 tibia. The Tarus is very common, I looted 6 and let numerors others rot.

For Giant wood spiders my tally was also 37, Hairs seem most common to me, but not all that. I ended up waiting for the second patela.

I also did the quest for the sword, Rusbek seems to always drop, but it took me 5 large fruit bats for a wing to drop.

Not too bad.

One way of speeding up the pops if the zone is empty-ish is to train other large and giant mobs to the guards. Eveyone knows how good those deputies are at ks so now it's time for them to do some work for us.

HTH,

Jim

Sure wish they had this stuff when I was a newbie. I still remember killing fire beetles so I could afford the leather armor from town. Grats to all the new toons on a nice armor quest series.

This took quite a while to do for my husband at level _39_ due to the number of people trying to aquire the armor.

It's main usage is for complete newbies (non-twinks) and as a dress-up occasion armor for the rest of us. (very few complete sets of armor that are atainable outside the planes/uber-gear)

Run-down of how hard items are to find....

Ruined pelts (tradeable) from diseased rats: about 1 rat in 4 drops a pelt, easily 60-70 percent are ruined.

(regular) mossy pelts (tradeable) from diseased rats: again 1 rat in 4 and roughly 30-35 percent are regular.

Undamaged pelts (SAYS UNDAMAGED IN THE NAME, can't tell you how MANY people confused the "mossy rat pelt" and the "undamaged mossy rat pelt" and thought the quests were broken) are also tradeable, drop off the diseased rats about 1 in 4 drops a pelt, this was about 1 in 100 pelts for my husband, but I got 3 of them in 2 hours. (1 to 5 percent of the pelts give or take)

Large wood spider tarsus: about 1 in 4 Large spiders drop these, very common

Large wood spider tibia: about 1 in 10-20 large spiders drop this. Somewhat uncommon.

Giant wood spider thorax: Actually about the MOST common giant drop, especially considering you only need one. Ask around people who have theirs will usually let you loot it when an extra drops.

Giant wood spider hairs: uncommon drop.

Giant wood spider patella: uncommon drop.

Giant wood spider femur: semi-rare drop.

Giant wood spiders drop up to 4 items each kill. 1-2 silks, 1-2 normal spider drops (spider legs, venom sacs et al), and no more than one quest drop. Giant wood spiders drop NOTHING about 2/3 of the time, and drop quest items roughly 1/4 of the rest of the time. (i.e. 1 giant wood spider in 12 drops a quest item on average)

Best method we found to get the quest items was to kill any spider, scarab, yellowjacket, giant bat, or giant thicket rat that spawned on the hard side of Misty. (they are all roamers and all on same spawn table) Also call out any quest drops you don't need and give the /loc's to others that need them. And offer to give plat if someone will tell you where to loot stuff you don't have. (e.g. if you have 2 spider hairs and one drops let others know, then offer 20 pp to loot a femur. the people in the zone will notice you are trying to help them, and paying for their help.... this is a good way to gain faction with Halfling_Newbies.... as is the occasional heal, SoW, (regen), or skin, thorns)

Good luck, be safe.

Just so everyone knows, the graphics for this armor is pretty cool. Hell, it even looks better than most level 40ish stuff that makes druids look like newbies in leather. All of the armor you get from this quest is a nice shade of dark green. I think I'll just do the quests to get some armor that doesn't look so crappy when in town or whatever.
