You say, 'Hail, Talorial D`Estalian'

Talorial D`Estalian says 'On what grounds do you think you are welcome to address me like that vermin? I am afraid you will have to prove yourself to me before I can treat you with any respect. Do you feel that you are [worthy] to stand before me? '

You say, 'I feel I am worthy'

Talorial D`Estalian says 'Very well then, you are lucky that I have been looking for some sort of an apprentice to help me out in gathering some hides from those nasty halflings. I did have a young one as yourself working for me before but unfortunately they didn't work out as you can see by looking at this autopsy table. I would hope that you will complete my [tasks], for your sake. '

You say, 'What tasks?'

Talorial D`Estalian says 'If you are willing to [gather some items] that are needed for specific halfling hides I can offer you with the resources necessary to fashion your own armor. '

You say, 'Gather some items?'

Talorial D`Estalian says 'Excellent Vinamar. Please take this Old Enchanted Tailors Kit. It contains magical power that is able to fashion specific components into a magical version of whatever the core material is. If you are a Necromancer you will need to gather halfling hides that have been infused with many different elements that you will collect and combine in this box. Simply tell me what pattern you [want] and I will present you with the recipe necessary for [Gloves], [Robe], [Trousers], [Sleeves], [Skullcap], [Bracers] and [slippers]. I would recommend you fashion your Robe last due to the difficulty and complex nature that is involved with finding the items necessary. '

You say, 'I want the Bracers pattern'

Talorial D`Estalian says 'To make your own Unholy Silk Bracer you will need to gather 1 Halfling Hide, 1 Deathfist Scouts Scalp, 2 Snake Eggs. Combine all of the items that you have collected and return to me when you need the [Bracer pattern]. '

my findings on getting DF scout scalp

I've looted the 4 scalps and finished my armor set and thought I would share my findings. First off, getting the 4 scalps is one of the most frustrating things I've done in EQ. The only reason I persevered is that it became a "personal quest" and I really wanted a full suit of armor. If you aren't willing to spend at least 8 hours killing lots of stuff (not just the scouts) then perhaps it would be better to purchase bracers and a cap and save yourself the trouble, as others have suggested. If, however, you have the undying need for the Unholy Silk Cap and Unholy Silk Bracers, then hopefully this will help you.

I found that there are 2 areas that scouts spawn. I do not believe that the scout spawns are tied to the orcs in the camps, so I don't think that clearing the camps will help (but if you want to try, be my guest). I think that the scouts are a random spawn and as such, if you kill everything you can in the 2 areas below I think you will see scouts more often.

The first area, which I'll call the North spawn area, is located north of the river in Nektulos, lying on an east-west line roughly between the two orc camps that lie just north of the river. If you are on the bridge, facing north, follow the path north until you see another path branching off to your left (west). Go a bit more north than this (until your first /loc number is about 0) and then hunt on a straight east-west line, although I generally stayed to the left of the north-south running path. There is a little hill there. The /loc of the area I generally stayed in was about 0,500.

The second area, the South spawn area, is just north of the EC zone. It also runs on an east-west line. If you are standing on the bridge, facing south, go south until you see a path branching off to your right (west). Follow the path a bit, and if you face west there should be a small open space to the right and a depression to the left. You can hunt on a straight east-west line between the orc camp (#6 on EQ Atlas of Nektulos) and the wall on the east side of zone, but I stayed in the general area of the open space and depression I mentioned above. You can see more from there and can get to more mobs. General /loc of this area is -1700,0.

My strategy was to kill any mob that was traveling on an east-west line of travel. Based on the paths that I saw the scouts taking, and assuming their placeholders follow the same path, this seemed to yeild a good frequency of scout spawns (maybe 1 every 10 mins). If you see a mob heading north-south, don't worry about it unless you want to. I got lots of spider silk, bear and wolf pelts and meat, and bone chips, so if you have a tailor character you can gather some useful items, and you can use the bear/wolf meat to make tasty sandwiches. The bone chips are a no-brainer for a necro. Most mobs were large spiders, bears, and skellies. Occasionally a random orc lego or templar will spawn too and wander around. There are snakes (mambas, tree snakes) too but they are a pain in the **** and if I saw several I ususally just hit them with siphon strength to aggro them and ran em to the guards at the bridge. Kill as much as you can, and you should see more frequent scout spawns.

Two warnings:

1) The guards will definitely KS you so if you see a scout try to pull it away from the path so a guard is less likely to kill it. NOTHING is more frustrating than working your **** off to get stuff to spawn, an then to have a guard get it. It's a good thing guards don't react to /gesture.

2) the North spawn area is easier at lower level. The random legos and templars are the worst thing you will face there. The south spawn has greater skeletons and young kodiaks so if you can't easily take those mobs then stick to the north area. By easily I mean with little mana/health/pet health loss, because you'll need to be fighting constantly to make sure you are killing placeholders to get the scouts to spawn. The south spawn area is decent for solo exp at around level 13, which is where I was while doing this.

That's about it. If you find a more efficient way to get the scout scalps, by all means use it. I certianly don't claim that my methods are the best, but they worked as well as they could for me. Best of luck in your search for the elusive deathfist scout scalp, and may your Unholy Silk Bracers and Cap keep you cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Best of luck and safe journeys!

Scouts are common uncommons
# Apr 15 2003 at 7:05 PM Rating: Decent
I was lucky when I first started this quest for the armor set and at first got 3 scouts in a row. But now that I have 3 I need 1 more for my bracers and I've been waiting for almost 3 days with no luck of scalps. I run across scouts but no scalps. The best hunting for them is on the Neriak side of the bridge. There is a large depression between the road and the camp. Stay in the trees next to the depression and soon the other 2 types of Deathfist Orcs will come, but the Scouts are common Uncommons. I don't care who says they are commons, let them trying hunting for scalps.

The orc camp at neg137, neg381 had two scouts up when I was running by. One did, indeed, drop his scalp. They stand on the hill beside the camp, basically directly behind the wizard spires.

Perhaps that'll help some.

I Created This
# Sep 23 2002 at 3:35 PM Rating: Decent
Hey Folks,
Just created these with my alt necro, and I wanted to give some details on the process, because there were a few things I didn't know until I did it. First thing is Talorial's location. He is all the way upstairs in the Lodge of the Dead, in the little room/hall right off Noxhil's room. Next thing is how to actually create them. You start the text with him, and the conversation progresses. At one point, you have to say "Gather some items". At this time, you get the enchanted box for combining the items. You put this box in your inventory and then continue the conversation. When you get to the point where he mentions what can be made, you just say "I want the <item name> pattern". At this time you will get the pattern from him. Please note that the sandals have to be called slippers, or vice versa (whatever he mentions, you say the opposite). Once you get the pattern from him, you are done with him (until you make the next piece). Once you have everything from him, combine all items needed, EXCEPT FOR THE PATTERN, in the box. Make sure nothing is stacked, and get it all in there and hit combine. Once you do this, you will then get an infused halfling hide. At this point, you are done with the box. This is where people were having a problem I believe. Now you need to find a loom to finish the process. Unfortunately, I could not find a loom in Neriak. A helpful tailor told me that a sewing kit works the same way though. I went to the Dashing Form in Neriak Commons and bought a small sewing kit (two slot) for a few gold. I then placed the infused halfling hide in there with the pattern, hit combine, and I now have my Unholy Silk item. I hope this clears up any ambiguity for anyone.

The Neriak loom is in the Foreign Quarter, behind the counter at the Silk Undergroud. If you're coming up from the Commons, hang a right. It's a rather easy place to find. It did take me a bit to find it. For the most part most craft tools (brew barrel, forge, etc.) are rather logically located near the NPC murchant that specializes in each craft.

1 egg not 2
# Jul 14 2002 at 12:55 PM Rating: Default
it says one egg, not two. that may be why it won't combine. just a thought

I have all items and made the pelt but I can not get Talorial to give me the patterns. what give. Asked everywhich way on more than 1 item, but still nothing
# Jun 30 2002 at 7:39 PM Rating: Default
I have all the items for the unholy aromor. I tried to make the bracers in the enchanted box. I had everything unstacked and didn't include the pattern.
It didn't work. I put the pattern in too and it still didn't work. I can't seem to make any of the armor. What am I doing wrong?

OK I finally get a DF scout scalp, I put it in my enchanted box with a halfling hide, and 2 snake eggs and hit combine.... and I get the msg that these items cannot be combined in this container.
What gives? I have made all the other items except the robe (need that dratted enbalming dust )and I have not had any problems up to now. Is is some specific kind of snake eggs? Help would be appreciated.

This might sound stupid but do you have the eggs stacked. I tried it with the eggs stacked and I got the same message.

I just made the bracers yesterday. You do need the halfling hide, DF scout scalp, and 2 eggs. Make sure that there is nothing else in the "enchanted box" and that the eggs aren't stacked.
About this quest...
# May 27 2002 at 5:55 PM Rating: Good
This is a tough quest only because it tries your patience. The Orc Scouts spawn near LOC -180.82, 192.56 However, they spawn in random positions around this area. I found that I needed to click F9 until I was zoomed out (three, maybe four times) and was able to use mouse look to pan the camera around my Necro in a circle. This allowed me to scan a wide area. There are two Orc camps near this LOC. The scouts spawn intermittently along with Legionaires and other Orc types at points between the two camps. Which makes the wait seems longer. It is. The biggest problem with this and the other associated quests, when it comes to these scouts are the following:

1) In first person view the scouts may come from the angle you're not viewing unless you Linda Blair, which may induce nausea.

2) The pathing often takes them near the several guards that patrol the path. Just about the time you almost kill the scout, that friendly guard kills him for you. No loot=no scalp.

3) Not all scouts drop the scalp. You've waited 45 minutes, see one, run over and kill it and get 11cp pieces but no scalp. Yippee!!! Now for another long wait.

4) This may or may not be correct. I discovered that if I sat near this area, nothing would spawn. I started running to the bridge looking for scouts near the zone tunnel. Sure as rain, there'd be a scout or Templar or other. I'd wack him, run back to the primary spot, and there would be scouts and others. When I began doing this regularly, I got all my scalps. So they may have it set that you cannot remain near this area for long periods. (and it breaks up the monotony)

Lastly, at level 12 I had no problems dealing with the various MOBs. A lower level may have some difficulty. Hope this helps someone.

Ok, today I've decided it's time better spent to toss in the towel and have all but 1 bracer and skullcap for a set.. dissapointing.. yes.. but it's over, not near enough scouts for this rare of a drop especially for a low lvl character. Before I got here, I'd have rated this quest as excellent.. now they can keep the carrot. Better to just do otherwise.

Goodluck to any of ya that keep lookin though.. I'm done.

# May 24 2002 at 7:01 PM Rating: Default
The scalps are indeed rare. To be honest, it has takn two weeks of constant run thru and area killn to hopefully force spawn a scout. But alas, i am down to the bracer and the formula did not work.

My party and i have been searching for scalps for the past 3-4 days. we have killed about 25 scouts and only came across 3 scalps. two of them dropped on the EC side of brige and 1 on the city side. starting to get fustrated on looking for them. we spend at least a min of 6-9 hrs a day looking.

ps, does the whole unholy set add any bonuses? if so please describe.

100pp, hahaha, u think a newbe can aford that! i know i cant. 1/2lings hides and toes are no drop, no trade items. u need orc SCOUT scalps, they can be traded and i think they are the only hard thing to find out of the unholy qests! I might pay 1pp per scalp but not no more than that.

Loom is in the Silk Underground, check maps for location.

Just FYI, you actually don't need a loom. I combined sleeves, pants, sandals andgloves in a small sewing kit, and all of them worked. Small sewing kit is available in neriak, at silk underground and royal furrier, if i'm not mistaken. This saves you a trip back into Neriak to do the combines.

Does anyone else think that the halflings are rather hard to kill for the low levels that are doing the quest? I have tried several times to attack the outskirts of their camp around the stump, both by myself and with a partner, and we get smashed every time because they are all casters and they root. They are very strong in a group and always aggro. If you wait for one of them to wander off it can take a long time, and the ones that do move away are green to my necro now, so you waste time not getting experience. Also does anyone know where you can find a halfling toe? I heard that they drop from the halfling skeletons but haven't seen any around yet.
RE: Level

If you sit on the newbie log two leatherfoot scouts roam by the log about every 15 min. You dont have to attack the whole group, but just wait for the scouts to roam away. 2 out of 3 will drop the hide. Hope it helps.

Havent seen deathfist scouts in N ro, just orc raiders.

I found a couple of scalps down south in, not the orc camp on the river, but just a little north of it.. scout come out and head for the path, as with the one on the river. the scouts on the river hardly ever have scalps, but the camp i speak of 2 out of three had scalps.. hope this helps.. just say "what bracer" or "what sleeves". Keep it simple. Also, for the slippers I believe you need to say "what sandals" not "what slippers".
