You say, 'Hail, Talorial D`Estalian'

Talorial D`Estalian says 'On what grounds do you think you are welcome to address me like that vermin? I am afraid you will have to prove yourself to me before I can treat you with any respect. Do you feel that you are [worthy] to stand before me? '

You say, 'I feel I am worthy'

Talorial D`Estalian says 'Very well then, you are lucky that I have been looking for some sort of an apprentice to help me out in gathering some hides from those nasty halflings. I did have a young one as yourself working for me before but unfortunately they didn't work out as you can see by looking at this autopsy table. I would hope that you will complete my [tasks], for your sake. '

You say, 'What tasks?'

Talorial D`Estalian says 'If you are willing to [gather some items] that are needed for specific halfling hides I can offer you with the resources necessary to fashion your own armor. '

You say, 'Gather some items?'

Talorial D`Estalian says 'Excellent Vinamar. Please take this Old Enchanted Tailors Kit. It contains magical power that is able to fashion specific components into a magical version of whatever the core material is. If you are a Necromancer you will need to gather halfling hides that have been infused with many different elements that you will collect and combine in this box. Simply tell me what pattern you [want] and I will present you with the recipe necessary for [Gloves], [Robe], [Trousers], [Sleeves], [Skullcap], [Bracers] and [slippers]. I would recommend you fashion your Robe last due to the difficulty and complex nature that is involved with finding the items necessary. '

You say, 'I want the Skullcap pattern'

Talorial D`Estalian says 'In order to fashion your own Unholy Silk Skullcap you will need to collect a few things and then combine them in the kit I presented you with earlier. Gather 1 Halfling Hide, 2 Deathfist Scouts Scalp and a bottle of Red Wine. After you have done this you will receive an Infused Halfling Hide. Return to me then and ask for your [Skullcap pattern] and I will present you with the pattern necessary to craft your Skullcap. '

OK, the Scouts still exist in the game, but over the last 5-7 days, I have discovered some things while doing the Wizard, Necromancer and Rogue quests. I'm not sure if others have noticed this, but it seems to work the same with the Defiant armor drops. Specifically, very rarely does a drop that is useable for your own class happen. If you are a cloth class, plate seems to drop the most. My Necromancer killed 12 Scouts and no scalp dropped. Today, my rogue, while killing those halfers got 6 Scouts and 2 scalps dropped.

The Scouts seem to path between the spot marked on the map as Scout Hill and the Orc camp southeast of the Halfling druid rings. One paths east near a log and the other paths very close to the rings. I have noticed a Legionnaire and a Templar seem to path the same so may be placeholders.

My suggestion, get a class different from the the one that needs the drops and you will get them quicker.
Dumb Scouts.

I hate these guys. They are almost non-existant and when you DO see them (once in a blue moon) they don't drop a scalp. Lousy bastages. If they're gonna be a rare spawn they should AT LEAST give a common drop. Not fair to have rare spawn AND rare drop added together. That's just . . . cruel.
my findings on locating scout scalps

I've looted the 4 scalps and finished my armor set and thought I would share my findings. First off, getting the 4 scalps is one of the most frustrating things I've done in EQ. The only reason I persevered is that it became a "personal quest" and I really wanted a full suit of armor. If you aren't willing to spend at least 8 hours killing lots of stuff (not just the scouts) then perhaps it would be better to purchase bracers and a cap and save yourself the trouble, as others have suggested. If, however, you have the undying need for the Unholy Silk Cap and Unholy Silk Bracers, then hopefully this will help you.

I found that there are 2 areas that scouts spawn. I do not believe that the scout spawns are tied to the orcs in the camps, so I don't think that clearing the camps will help (but if you want to try, be my guest). I think that the scouts are a random spawn and as such, if you kill everything you can in the 2 areas below I think you will see scouts more often.

The first area, which I'll call the North spawn area, is located north of the river in Nektulos, lying on an east-west line roughly between the two orc camps that lie just north of the river. If you are on the bridge, facing north, follow the path north until you see another path branching off to your left (west). Go a bit more north than this (until your first /loc number is about 0) and then hunt on a straight east-west line, although I generally stayed to the left of the north-south running path. There is a little hill there. The /loc of the area I generally stayed in was about 0,500.

The second area, the South spawn area, is just north of the EC zone. It also runs on an east-west line. If you are standing on the bridge, facing south, go south until you see a path branching off to your right (west). Follow the path a bit, and if you face west there should be a small open space to the right and a depression to the left. You can hunt on a straight east-west line between the orc camp (#6 on EQ Atlas of Nektulos) and the wall on the east side of zone, but I stayed in the general area of the open space and depression I mentioned above. You can see more from there and can get to more mobs. General /loc of this area is -1700,0.

My strategy was to kill any mob that was traveling on an east-west line of travel. Based on the paths that I saw the scouts taking, and assuming their placeholders follow the same path, this seemed to yeild a good frequency of scout spawns (maybe 1 every 10 mins). If you see a mob heading north-south, don't worry about it unless you want to. I got lots of spider silk, bear and wolf pelts and meat, and bone chips, so if you have a tailor character you can gather some useful items, and you can use the bear/wolf meat to make tasty sandwiches. The bone chips are a no-brainer for a necro. Most mobs were large spiders, bears, and skellies. Occasionally a random orc lego or templar will spawn too and wander around. There are snakes (mambas, tree snakes) too but they are a pain in the **** and if I saw several I ususally just hit them with siphon strength to aggro them and ran em to the guards at the bridge. Kill as much as you can, and you should see more frequent scout spawns.

Two warnings:

1) The guards will definitely KS you so if you see a scout try to pull it away from the path so a guard is less likely to kill it. NOTHING is more frustrating than working your **** off to get stuff to spawn, an then to have a guard get it. It's a good thing guards don't react to /gesture.

2) the North spawn area is easier at lower level. The random legos and templars are the worst thing you will face there. The south spawn has greater skeletons and young kodiaks so if you can't easily take those mobs then stick to the north area. By easily I mean with little mana/health/pet health loss, because you'll need to be fighting constantly to make sure you are killing placeholders to get the scouts to spawn. The south spawn area is decent for solo exp at around level 13, which is where I was while doing this.

That's about it. If you find a more efficient way to get the scout scalps, by all means use it. I certianly don't claim that my methods are the best, but they worked as well as they could for me. Best of luck in your search for the elusive deathfist scout scalp, and may your Unholy Silk Bracers and Cap keep you cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Best of luck and safe journeys!

Stop wasting time
# May 01 2003 at 3:33 AM Rating: Decent
Instead of taking all the time and frustration on waiting for Deathfist Scout Scalps to drop, why not go into Eastern Commonlands, and head in the cave to Northern Desert of Ro, and go to Merchant Rushka and buy a stack of 20 for 3 silver 1 copper each!? Seems like a good idea to me. =)

I went there, and they have Deathfist PAWN scalps. <sighs> I've gone EVERYWHERE anyone who's posted about this has said, and either they do not sell the scalps, or are not the right mob. The only place I've found this mob is in Nektulous Forest, so don't waste your time going elsewhere on wild goose chases.

I Created This
# Sep 23 2002 at 3:35 PM Rating: Default
Hey Folks,
Just created these with my alt necro, and I wanted to give some details on the process, because there were a few things I didn't know until I did it. First thing is Talorial's location. He is all the way upstairs in the Lodge of the Dead, in the little room/hall right off Noxhil's room. Next thing is how to actually create them. You start the text with him, and the conversation progresses. At one point, you have to say "Gather some items". At this time, you get the enchanted box for combining the items. You put this box in your inventory and then continue the conversation. When you get to the point where he mentions what can be made, you just say "I want the <item name> pattern". At this time you will get the pattern from him. Please note that the sandals have to be called slippers, or vice versa (whatever he mentions, you say the opposite). Once you get the pattern from him, you are done with him (until you make the next piece). Once you have everything from him, combine all items needed, EXCEPT FOR THE PATTERN, in the box. Make sure nothing is stacked, and get it all in there and hit combine. Once you do this, you will then get an infused halfling hide. At this point, you are done with the box. This is where people were having a problem I believe. Now you need to find a loom to finish the process. Unfortunately, I could not find a loom in Neriak. A helpful tailor told me that a sewing kit works the same way though. I went to the Dashing Form in Neriak Commons and bought a small sewing kit (two slot) for a few gold. I then placed the infused halfling hide in there with the pattern, hit combine, and I now have my Unholy Silk item. I hope this clears up any ambiguity for anyone.

Need to Use Scout
# Jun 29 2002 at 1:10 PM Rating: Default
Ok at the top of this page I noticed people saying the quest was broken I'll tell you again YOU NEED TO USE DEATHFIST ORC SCOUT SCALPS and not anything else or it won't work. I haven't done it yet about to try I guess but I did the sleeves gloves and sandals. Don't need the scalps for those all relatively easy to find stuff to.
This quest seems to be broken
# Jun 16 2002 at 9:24 PM Rating: Default
I have the 2 pawn scalps, the hafling hide and the red wine... but I cannot combine them in the enchanted box. It just doesnt work, and no theyre not stacked. The quest just seems to be broken or there's a missing ingredient. If anyone has made this skullcap please post as to how u were succesful.

You need the Scout Scalps, not the pawn scalps.
SCALPS !

ok well ive found one and i made a bracer out of it already , does anyone know how much i might be able to sell it for ?!~
RE: SCALPS !
# Jul 12 2002 at 4:50 PM Rating: Default
The Bracers, along with all of the newbie Armors, are No-drop. So you cannot sell them, unfortunately, because as rare as the Scout scalps drop, it would be easier to buy these things.

go to EC and fight orcs there.. they drop scalps quite a bit... and there deathfist so try there.
RE: scalps
# Jul 13 2002 at 11:06 AM Rating: Default
The scalps that drop in EC are those of legionnaires, oracles... anything but scouts.

Scalps???
# May 20 2002 at 7:52 PM Rating: Default
Ok, today I've decided it's time better spent to toss in the towel and have all but 1 bracer and skullcap for a set.. dissapointing.. yes.. but it's over, not near enough scouts for this rare of a drop especially for a low lvl character. Before I got here, I'd have rated this quest as excellent.. now they can keep the carrot. Better to just do otherwise.

Goodluck to any of ya that keep lookin though.. I'm done.
Deathfist Scouts

I have been hunting the scouts for a while now. I have killed close to 50 and have only looted 1 scalp (several hours spent doing it so dont get excited). There are 3 orc camps in nek forest, of which only spawn legions and templars (and the ocasional chief). You will not find scout spawns at these camps. There is however random spawning (time and location) 'roaming' deathfist orcs. Of these that raom, I have seen scouts, legions, and templars. Needless to say the scouts have been the rarest. On top of that the scout scalps must be a very rare drop. With all the new DE NECs in the zone hunting for the scout scalps for their own newbie armor, this results in a very agrivating hunt. I have seen people offer 50pp for a scalp. The questing armor is fun, but i have been told that there is better armor for sale and quest avail to necros. My sugestion is not to waste your time hunting scouts for the skullcap and bracers. But if you do happen to loot one (good luck) AUCTION IT!!! You will prob turn a healthy profit. I have submitted a bug sugesting that the spawn/drop vs people hunting ratio is missqued. I am hoping that this is an overlook and will be fixed soon, but in the meantime i have given up the hunt and will proced to level. I advise you to submit a petition and do the same.

loc for deathfist scout scalps

can anyone who finished the quest post the location of where they killed the scouts. I think it will help alot of people. 8^0

I found scouts in two areas: First just north of the bridge at the first fork in the road. They walk an east-west track across the road. More often you'll see a wandering templar spawn here instead of the scout though.

The second place is *south of the bridge. They seem to wander east-west about halfway between the bridge and the EC entrance.

Rare spawn with a rare drop. Yuck =P

Well, I search for scouts for 5 hours myself today. I finally found where a couple spawn. Problem is it is right around a guards patrol route. So soon as the guard see's em.. Poof gone!

you can find the spawn right infront of the EC entrance at coords -1703, -290

Good luck finding scalpes on them.

So far I have found 1 scalp and that was near an Orc camp me and a lvl 50 buddy raided. The scout wasn't in the camp but in the area.

The location is in the Nek Forest, in front of the zone to EC.
Scouts? What scouts?

A little of the subject. A necro that worships Sol Ro? How did you manage that? Can other races pick other dieties, as a Necro? Hmmm... Interesting...
RE: Scouts? What scouts?
# May 01 2002 at 12:24 PM Rating: Default
Hmm...you found scouts? I played the other night for about 5 hours with a friend; he apparently saw one on the way to meet me but it had no scalp. Other than that we didn't see any. They don't seem to spawn at the camps (which is just as well since there are way too many critters at those camps!) so I don't even know where to look for them.

Halfling hides are easier to come up with!
This does not work?
# Apr 01 2002 at 12:15 PM Rating: Default
I have all the ingredients the deathfistscout scalps matted halfling hides and red wine, but when I try to combine them in the box nothing happens. Is there something special that I need to make this work. It is driving me mad!!!
RE: This does not work?
# May 22 2002 at 6:06 PM Rating: Default
Maybe you tried to combine Deathfist pawn scalps, they are MUCH easier to find and I myself (albeit foolishly) tried this combo with no luck :P
RE: This does not work?
# Apr 02 2002 at 5:32 AM Rating: Default
You haven't, by any chance, stacked the two scalps ??
If you have, then that's the reason, the items must NOT be stacked...

Good Luck

You're looking for matted halfling hides. They drop off of the halfling scouts and sargeants and captains. Look for a couple wandering scouts who cross the road at the newbie log. Just east of the newbie log is a camp of them. The matted halfling hide is a very common drop.

Good hunting =)

Try killing the leatherfoot raiders in Nektulos... I kept getting matted halfling hides, or something like that while my rogue was seeking their bones for his Ashen Bone Mail bits.
