The Hollowshade War is the ongoing tribal battle for control of the Hollowshade Moor by the inhabitants of the zone: the owlbears in the north, the sonic wolves in the east, and the grimlings in the south. Occasionally one side will spontaneously attack another, but you can cause one side to attack another by going to any of these locations (owlbear cave in the north, sonic wolf cave in the east, grimling village in the south) and killing the named NPC there and its two guardians, causing another side to attack. Sometimes you need to kill one or more placeholders to get the named NPC to spawn. If all three sides still exist in the zone, which side attacks will be random.

You will know an attack has begun when you see a zonewide message to the effect of: "One side begins to attack another [in a particular location]. The NPCs at this location look very nervous." Two things happen after this zonewide message: A set of five non-KOS attackers sets out from the attacking location, and a set of five permarooted, summoning, non-KOS defenders spawns out front of the defending location. Unless you kill the defenders, the defenders will always defeat the attackers. If you kill the defenders, the attackers will always win. If you're not happy with which side is attacking, kill the attackers; they're quite weak. If the attackers are victorious, they will enter the defending location, despawning and causing everything in the defending tribe at that location to despawn, to be replaced by members of the attacking tribe, including named NPCs (or their placeholders).

Once one side controls all three locations, you will see a zonewide message to the effect of: "The Vah Shir retreat to the city." You will then see a second zonewide message to the effect of: "Big named NPC roars its triumph." The Vah Shir at the fort will run back to the city, and "Big named NPC" will now spawn in the abandoned fort, surrounded by 5-6 of its closest friends.

Killing the big named resets the zone, causing the tribes to reappear in their original locations and the Vah Shir vendors to reappear in the fort.

Additional notes: Some items only drop from particular NPCs, and some NPCs only spawn when a particular tribe controls a particular location.

I've killed this guy (Grimling Prince) twice now and have had his body poof within 30sec and not been able to loot him. Of course VI doesn't believe me, so I'm wondering if anyone else has had a similar problem? If so please post here. Thanks

Earier tonight we killed Gnarlik and I looked at the loot - 2 items. First was No Drop Mask of the Blind Wolf, 2nd I barely got a flash of it on screen and the MOB rotted/disappeared. Probably less than 20 seconds after the kill. I have petitioned it but cannot talk to the GM until tomorrow. Keeping my fingers crossed but not really hopeful. Believe me the poeple I was grouped with while friend would have SCREAMED if I had looted the items without them looking.

So you are not alone in having it despawn on you.

Don't expect much from these guys. Its happened to me twice and they still dared to suggest that I let it decay and/or someone looted it while I wasn't looking (one of those times i was looking at the items when it happened). Not to mention that they said 'there is nothing wrong with the zone' when they meant 'we checked to see if this is a known bug and its not' - they don't even bother to check these things first hand!

Anyone that has this problem, please /bug it or email eqbugs@soe.sony.com
and/or eqtesting@soe.sony.com so that we can get this verified as a bug asap.

I have heard that this problem actually has to do with the war ending, and the zone repopping. So the only thing the GM's could do is have the zone repop later (like 1 or 2 minutes later), but this might have something to do with why the zone gets stuck and has to be reset (just a thought).

On Bertox server, the war has been going on for quite some time. We helped the sonic wolves take over the owlbear cave and the grimling camp. From what I have read, they are then supposed to take over the Vah Shir outpost and it is there that we kill the boss for the good drops and reset the zone. It has been about three days since we helped the wolves take over and they have made no move for the Vah Shir outpost. Any ideas on how long this should take or if we need to trigger them to take over the outpost?

Thank you,
Lilklerik

Zone Reset
# Apr 15 2002 at 8:24 AM Rating: Decent
Just ended the war with my fiancee and ranger we met on Povar. Wolfs had grimling camp and their own camp. Grimlings were in owlbear cave. So we killed the grimling defenders when the wolves announced they would attack the grimlings. They moved in with ease. We killed a couple named, a no drop earring with poor stats and went to kill Gnarlik end the war and get see what items we could get. Not 20 seconds later the zone reset. /cry We lost the loot. So beware when you end the war. Loot fast, and decide who gets loot before hand.

Is the War actually a quest - or just a zone feature?
# Apr 15 2002 at 3:39 AM Rating: Decent
In my opinion (based on experience from Rallos Zek) this is actually not a quest.
On Rallos it seems as Hollowshade Moore is in a sort of eternal war cycle.
I have finished the war 6 times now. 2 times grouped and 4 times alone but with 2 computers (2 chars).

When the "boss" of the race that have won all the camps - are killed, Hollowshade Moore resets back to normal.
After this it wont take long before a new attack is starting up. And this have happened many times when I'm alone in the zone. So there are no user interaction on this! (This may be server spesific though, in case the war is bugges on Rallos Zek?)

Other things I have experienced:
Once - first the grimlings announced their attack on the owlbears. The 3 defenders then popped as usual. Not more than 2-5 min later the sonic wolfs attack was announced. And then 3 more defenders popped on top of the 3 first. So then I had to fight 6 defenders instead of 3, hehe.
Grimling attackers came first and lost, cause I was not done with the defenders, but when the Sonic Wolfs came I was done, and they could take the cave.

Normally there is no hurry making one race take the whole Zone (to get the "boss" to spawn), cause there are many nice items dropping from named ones at all 3 camps.
When it comes to what named spawns where, se my post under Hollowshade Moore Bestiary.

Sometimes a camp can be bugged. That is, there are no new spawns when you kill the creatures there. Only way to fix this, seems to help one race win the war. Then Hollowshade Moore will go back to normal and bugged camp will be fixed.

Hi :)

The reason the boss at fort puffs so fast is because the remaing grimlings take the corpse to get it a res . thats funny btw:) However if i believe that if one of his body guards is still alive it won't puff I can't say for sure that this will work every time but it is worth a try (they often drop more than one of the same no drop items) Hope this helps and worth a try good luck :)

The trigger, If thier is a trigger I have not found one yet except it turned on and off because of patches. I had one last idea that i was unable to try if you get a chance try charming the city wolf and kill the owlbear prince who has a ph of a cub, grappler or Razorbeek either to the right of the cave or to the west . The city wolf and the prince's pathing cross. On drinal i usually see him at 2am in the morning he may be timed. The city wolf if you don't no walks from the river to the city and is way tougher and resists more than all other wolfs in the zone even ghowlik and curfang.

Third and last, I have gotten 2 different wolf earrings 1 was lore off the named wolf that spawns in Cha's spot in the owlbear cave and one outside the owlbear cave(when the wolves beat the owlbears) and killed a named Grimmling outside of owlbear cave called whezom grimroot(Somthing like that) he droped a face slot nosering no drop 4 ac 5 wis 10 manna. btw hewas a wizzardt type casting force shock and other dd's so be carefull and pull him away towards the beetle hopper area so you don't get a ton of adds.

Hope this helps someone and sorry about the lack of detail on drops and spelling :)

Heard that war was taking place yesterday, April 2nd, on Zeb sever. Now that we know that it is still possible, anyone know how to get it started. Is it just random or an u trigger it and if so how?

As of last night, it looks like the Wolves have won the war. They occupy all of the caves and the Grimling camps. There is nothing but wolves everywhere--no grimlings and no owlbears.
Interesting problem.
# Mar 22 2002 at 4:07 PM Rating: Default
On Luclin server the Owlbears control the Grimling fort, but the Sonic Wolves control the Owlbear caves...I think the zone is now 'bugged'.

If the sonic wolves could take over the Grimling fort they would control all 3 camps, but I don't know if any defenders will pop in the fort since the Owlbears already defeated the Grimlings.

Grrrr...Only one named mob to camp, and the war can't progress. bleh.

Does it actually work correctly now. We completed the war a couple of times 2/3 weeks ago only to have the corpses dissapear about 20 seconds after death due to the zone returning to normal. Do the corpses stay now or do you just need to loot quick?

I killed this rare grimmy during the war, droped an earring 3ac, 5int 5wis 5 to all sv lore but not no drop. He was an easy kill blue to me at 39 I think I was then
I have some thoeries as to how to get these rares to spawn but waiting for another war to try them out. And calling this a quest?? well Im not sure thats exactly correct, but of course I may not know ****. But it does seem to me (I agree) that the war is not triggered as previously stated, but killing the grimling prince definately ends it

It is not triggered, it happens automatically as long as it is enabled on your server. They had to disable it for awhile due to bugs and crashing problems, and it still loads on disabled most the time. I had a gm come over and reboot it and enable the war for me before. Due to the fact the war needs to be active to get drops i need for the quest continuation after the wolfbane part.

Speaking of which, has anyone seen a sonic wolf guardian fang drop? Off which mob and where was it?

Got a guardian fang last night off the wandering sonic wolf in the cave while camping Ghlowik (spelling?). Got no idea what its for though heh, if you were on Vazaelle i would give it to you but alas its no drop =(

Oh ya....it seems one quick way to see if the war is active is to go into the cave leading to grimling forest and checking if Ahom is up. If hes up the war is active, if he isnt then it aint.

# Mar 18 2002 at 11:48 AM Rating: Default
I always wanted to start a war. The only problem that I see is that it has to be triggered by a Vah Shir quest. If anyone knows of any other way to start this war, please let us know.
Big leaders and buddies
# Mar 17 2002 at 4:08 PM Rating: Good
I have gotten involved in this war before. Some one once told me it was from lvl 30 or around there....it think that was very very wrong. The mob that spawns in the outpost is of course the big chief lead of the race. For the grimlings it was a prince something. He spawns and brings along alot of his bodyguard buddies and these are nastier then the normal ones. For one thing they cant be snared or rooted...they are immuned to speed reductions. Second they can cast or at least some of the ones that spawn are casters. And being caster the dam things will gate when really hurt which means your pets will end up running into the camp if they do that. Each final mob sems to drop different thing. The grimling leader dropped some kind of dagger, a sword of the swamp and a grimling bp. alos brings up one of the bugs since before I got to loot the corpse it rotted in about 30 seconds. Guess the repop wiped it out. One last thing. Nothing from any of the warring races will respawn during a war, at least on my server, but when a faction controls another camp the camp spawn changes to the controling race. For example the wolves left in the wolf cave turn into grimlings. Makes me wonder if the named mobs turn into different named mobs as well.

They do - to get the 5wis/int earring you have to get the grimlings into the sonic wolf caves and then kill PH for named Grimling tribal Chief and Grurn Noeyes pops - dropped the bracer and spear so far but no earrings as he is meant to drop
Nice!

This war is very fun... I was in the zone camping a few things with my little assassin so everything is uber green lol. From what I can tell the war isn't really triggered it just happens or if it is triggered it's because you kill the main guy in a camp so many times. I usually got a message after I killed about 3 or so chief's (grimlings). All you have to do is pick a side. When your side is attacking someone run to where they are attacking and kill the defenders. Note about the defenders... they do not move but they do summon so make sure you can kill them before you jump in. Once your faction takes over all 3 camps they will run off the Vah Shir's in there little camp outside the city. When you want to finish the war kill the named (he will be sitting at the back of the camp) the owlbear was a SK but still very green to a 60. Have fun! I know I did!

Yes, it's true, the war is triggered when the Vah Shir who has completed the Sonic Wolf Bane Quest hands in their items to the NPC that spawns by the entrance to Grimling Forest. For each part of the class quests, you have to turn in your weapon to get an upgrade, and this part is no different. However, the NPC in question has been quite elusive for some time. He appeared on the test server about three weeks ago and now supposedly is sitting there but I haven't seen him yet, when I do, my 35 Beastlord has her claws and is ready to go.
RE: wolfies and grimlings
# Apr 07 2002 at 6:22 AM Rating: Decent
A follow up to my previous post - the Hollowshade War was activated on Torvonillous last weekend. The seperate factions warred back and forth, each taking over the one of the others. The first war was won by the Grimlings and the Grimling Prince spawned but despawned within 30 seconds before myself of any of my Guildees helping me with my quest could loot him. If you drop any of the Princes, loot them as quickly as possible.
To start the next part of the Beastlord quest (and I'm assuming the other classes, as well) you need to turn in your current weapon and cape to the NPC in the cave to the entrance to Grimling Forest, as mentioned before. He tells you to take his manuscript to Historian Sharar in Shar Vahl, who is in the library and gives you a no drop earring that gives you immunity to Screech. She directs you to a guard in the Vendor district on the Hollowshade side, and gives you an item to take to him. He then tells you to get a grimling chieftain staff, an owlbear guardian talon, and a sonic wolf guardian fang. These three items can only be gotten during the Hollowshade War. If Ahom is up, you can loot them. My Beastlord, Drexsanu, was able to loot the claw off of an Owlbear Razorbeak that was wandering out in front of the cave just after the Owlbears took over one of the other factions. Secondly, I got the sonic wolf fang off of a sonic guardian that spawned when the guardians and defenders planted themselves in front of the sonic wolf cave, when another faction was trying to get in. Lastly, I was not able to get the staff. Another Beastlord of similar level was also trying to get one with me, and we camped the grimling chieftain for hours with no luck. A staff did drop, but it was the wrong one. We later heard that the mystics and priests dropped them, just to the right or left of the chieftain's hut. This would make sense, considering the drops of the other items. Unfortunately, on Torvo, the grimlings were defeated by the sonic wolves who held the camp for two days, then were overrun by owlbears. By the time we had the correct information, the grimlings were gone. Better luck to you other Vah Shir out there, Drexsanu will continue to try to get her items.

Great Event
# Mar 16 2002 at 8:22 PM Rating: Default
Here is what I know so far. Something triggers the war. I am not sure what. But when the war is triggered, the grimlings, the owlbears and the sonic wolfs will attack each other. Each camp will send an attack team to the other two camps. Whichever team wins, will install a prince at the shar vahl fort. You then kill the prince to reset the zone. The war is then over and the zone is normal. There is more documentation on other threads to this zone.

What I don't know is what the trigger is. Someone please figure it out and post it.

Great Zone

Grimling Defenders
# Mar 15 2002 at 11:33 PM Rating: Decent
I have seen a war like situation when Luclin went live at the Grimling camp. While killing the chief, about 5 grimings spawned and the zonewide message went off about some event. Next thing I knew a pack of Sonic wolves attacked and were dispatched by the grimling.

We watched this go on for a bit, and our mage thought he would try to kill one of the grimling defenders. They all con'ed green and I said to go for it. A few seconds later I hade to drag his corpse out. Apparently they can backstab up to 180hp and they do summon, but they are static like the chief so they dont really run around.

dynamic event
# Mar 15 2002 at 8:51 PM Rating: Default
it was designt as a permanent dynamic event (like hoppers and cavemen in hollowshade). the 3 faction (sonic wolf, owlbears, grimlings) sometinmes attack each other ( there is a zone wide message what party attack and what defend). then some invaders and some defenders spawn. playeyeer can now let one side win the thing when they kill the defenders or invaders. when one faction succesful invade another factions area then the orgin inhabit are replaced through the invader. when one faction kill both other they controll the whole zone and the boss mop of them spawn in the cat outpost with some guards (the vah shir retreats befor) when he is killed the zone repsawn and everyting is normal again.

some named mops can spawn when one faction controls 2 areas and they dropt the stuf listet above....and of course also the boss mop of each faction.

meanwhile i thing they turned this thing off on all servers (but i can only confirm this for sol ro) again because there where some bugs with it ( no respawn in the whole zone, one side win but nothing happen, aso..)

I believe this event is triggered when a class finishes its Giant quest. I still have to finish mine so i am not sure. Contact me if u have done the warrior part of this quest on the quellious server.
