This is the OLD version of the Grimling War quest series which is no longer available on live servers.

This is one of 4 or 5 quests which results in a key for entry into the castle area of Acrylia Caverns. It is designed for a group of about 12 Level 40 players.

You say, 'Hail, Scout Derrin'

Scout Derrin says 'Greetings Illia, what brings you to the battlegrounds? Looking to raid a grimling camp perhaps?

You say, 'I would like to raid a grimling camp'

Scout Derrin says 'I can lead a dozen men of my strength on a raid against a well fortified grimling encampment. It's a risky mission, but one that has the potential to yield substantial rewards. If you have the manpower and the courage, give me a glowing acrylia sphere and we'll get started.

The sphere can be bought from Shopkeeper Chirrin in one of the huts in the Val Shir outpost for 100p. Handing Scout Derrin the sphere will have him respawn with weapons, and lead you to the camp.

Scout Derrin says 'Draw your best weapons, memorize your most deadly spells and cast your best enhancements. Prepare yourselves for a fierce battle!'

Follow Scout Derrin across the bridge towards the grimling camp. He will pick a camp at random and walk towards it.

Scout Derrin says 'Follow me closely, we cannot afford for anyone to get lost.'

Continue westward following the Scout to the grimling camp.

Scout Derrin says 'I must survive this invasion in order for it to be successful. Stay alert and make certain that I do not perish! When you are ready to bring our invasion to a close hand me the eye of an officer.'

Scout Derrin says 'The target camp is just over this ridge to the west. Half of you stay here and make your last minute preparations. Listen, and when you hear my command, charge the camp. The other half of you follow me now.'

You must keep Scout Derrin alive in order to complete the quest. After the initial attack, you'll need to continually fight off waves of grimlings before the Grimling Officer will eventually appear. Be warned that the Grimling Officer is stronger than the others and cannot be stunned, mesmerized or the like.

NOTE: The "a grimling officer" appears to be completely random as to how long he will take to spawn. He will eventually pop inside one of the waves of grimlings that charge the camp but we saw it take anywhere from 2 to 40 waves.

Kill the grimling officer and loot "Grimling Officer's Eye" from him, hand this in to Scout Derrin to finish the assault.

Scout Derrin says 'Excellent! Completing a raid upon this encampment is a feat to be proud of. May this medal dispell all doubt that you have indeed accomplished this feat. I advise you to leave now, as this area will surely be taken over by the enemy at any moment.'

He gives you the "Gold Lined Copper Medal of War" and walks back to the Vah Shir base camp.

This quest is also no longer available as described. Prior to the revamp of Acrylia Caverns in 2003, this was part of a series of quests which led towards eventually obtaining the key to Inner Acrylia. As the key no longer exists, neither do the quests to obtain it.

I just did wars 1-9 today solo (11-11-06,75 necro)and can confirm it is still doable but with one small glitch. In war 2 one of the grimlings that spawn from the fireplace spawns elsewhere in the zone.I found him just left when entering Acrylia Caverns stuck in a rock trying to run back to the camp. When you find this grimling the rest of the wars should be cake to solo except the 10th.For the 10th war you will need a group.I had six group members and had pet the pet classes send out pets to kill mobs. You have to kill the named mob Claw Of Khatri Sha to win.

With the help of a tracker I found that this soulsoother spawns INSIDE the tunnel leading to acrylia caverns, in a corner near the top.

Directions: Enter the tunnel and make first left, and you should see her in the corner behind a rock. Running back accross the zone to kill the previously untargetable npcs around the bonfire spawns Soul Echo, the named npc to complete the raid.

Only cost me a few k plat but it was worth it.

Raids

I have just cleared 7/9 raids with my 65 bl. The 2 i am having trouble with is

A: Camp 2. i can not target the shaman when the camp is cleared. i have tried multiple times with no luck. anyone know how to do this one? are there waves? Thanks in advance for any information.

B: Camp 9. I dont think this is possible for me. You have to keep a traitor alive while up to 5 grimlings beat on him. myself and my warder can not keep argo and the traitor ultimately dies.
And when you clear the camp an officer will spawn to take him out. almost died there.

Any info posted will help a lot. working on the carved bark mask.

Right now, the second raid is bugged in that an event mob spawns about halfway across the zone. It's been bug reported and updated in petition notes, so hopefully the Grimling Code Squad will fix it in a maintenance patch soon.
In order to find this stray grimling, have a tracker use "normal" tracking mode to identify the most recent spawns. Clear out the grimling camp, then hunt the next most recent spawn. You should find it roughly 2/3 of the way towards Acrylia Caverns entrance, pathing back and forth like the stupid grimling it is.
Once this grimling dies and the rest of the grimling camp is cleared, save the mini-grimlings, the four untargetable grimlings can be killed. Killing them will spawn the named grimling, allowing the completion of this raid.

All eight other grimling raids can be completed easily enough without trying to circumventing any glitches.

Camp 2 indeed seems to be bugged. There are 4 untargettable Spirit Enchanters standing around a caompfire, and they stay untargeted after killing the entire camp. They keep occasionally summoning other (small-sized) grimlings that pop up in the center campfire, but killing these does not help either.

After a while, the camp just repops entirely with grimlings, with the 4 Spirit Chanters depopping, without ever being targetable. The repop is the normal grimling population of the camp, it's not another wave: killing these will not spawn anything and the camp is still not taken when checking with the General.

Bugged.

Yes the totem still drops, but is now part of the revamped camp quests. I got this to drop at camp 6, but the totem now has 3 charges. I did this camp with 56bst, 54 druid, 56 enc. Was a bit of overkill. Could have done the camp with just my Beastlord and my druid (bot). Most likely I could have soloed the camp. Quite a few casters, but I resisted almost everything since they were all green except for the camp boss mob.

As of todays patch these quests have totally changed.

If you hail General Staginar and say 'which camps' He'll make a list of all the camps that the grimlings have been run out of. Once you win a raid, the camp grimlings despawn and thugs spawn in their place.

There are NINE raids. It appears that as soon as you complete one you can no longer do that raid until the entire zone resets.

Each guard in the fort corresponds to a raid. Captain Necin is the ninth.

I have been unable to locate the way to start the 3rd raid, but the scouts in front of the first building start raids 1 and 2. After you beat raids 1 and 2 all the scouts tell you to go talk to the Captain and the Veterans.

The Veterans start raids 4-8.

Raid 1 involves going to a camp and killing the members of the camp while untargetable casters nuke you. When the camp is clear, the casters become targetable. When the casters are dead a boss caster spawns. He drops a bunch of different loot. Each member of the camp drops Document 1 (used in the Beyond Sonic Wolf Bane quests).

Raid 2 involves going to a camp, killing the members of the camp, while untargetable shamans summon tiny grimlings at you. When you kill everything in the camp, the untargetable shamans become targetable. After you kill the shamans, a boss named something like Soul Core spawns. He drops a dagger. Sorry I don't have better details, I was excited and in a hurry to do these quests. Each member of the camp drops Document II or Document III. I didn't realize they dropped both and only got document III. That sucked, because I was there to get both. :/ They also drop a lot of copper medals used for the beastlord epic.

Raid 3...I couldn't get this one started.

Raid 4...You have to kill some tougher grimlings while untargetable clerics heal them. This one is a *****. My party was wiped out because we didn't expect the increase in difficulty.

Raid 9. We went and checked this out. Saw a lot of grimlings that conned dark blue at level 45. Lots of casters.

We need more details on these quests. They seem to be really cool. They are a hell of a lot more fun than the officer quests before.

Please post your notes!!!

The Veterens starts raids 3-6. The 7-9 are ones done by the captain.

There are 3 scouts but only 2 give out the quest.
You have to talk to Veteren to do 3rd, i forget which one.
RE: Changed

The scout also no longer tries to suicide by grimling. He leads you to the camp, you tell him you are ready, and he spawns a bunch more grimlings. However, he stays clear of the camp, so you don't have to worry about defending him (at least camps 1-2).

Scout Husman will lead you to either camps 1 and 2, and you can hail him again for the next camp. Camp 1 dropped the Copper Medal of War for my beastlord epic... not sure if it's random among camps or specific to a certain one.

Hi,

whats respawn time on Scout Derrin? and does it make sense to clean that grimling camp in SW corner in advance?
RE: NPC spawntime
# May 23 2002 at 8:30 AM Rating: Good
Respawn time is typically 10 minutes in my experience, unless something goes wrong with the server (I have seen this twice).

It does no good to clear the camp in advance, as the entire camp will spawn when Derrin (or any of the scouts) charge the camp.
Scout Raid Forces

First and foremost, thanks to everyone who helped me complete my scout raids, especially my fellow guild members of Dark Conscripts of Essence.

In order to help everyone else, I thought I would post our raid forces. These might be overkill, but I love to be prepared. With the forces documented below, the raids were completed the first time without failure and without any real problems. In fact, the toughest part was assembling the forces, as the actual raids were easy. We had one death in all of the raids I have done (I have done each one twice now), and the problem came from the char getting aggro from the NPC and was killed trying to run to the zone to clear the aggro from the NPC (watch out for those Sonic Battlehounds).

Husman's Raid:
34 Beastlord, 39 Rogue, 60 Druid, 54 Enchanter

Danarin's Raid and Derrin's Raid:
37 Beastlord, 41 Beastlord, 43 Beastlord, 46 Cleric, 40 Cleric, 48 Druid, 55 Druid, 44 Enchanter, 40 Ranger, 42 Wizard

While breaking the camp for Derrin's raid, we also had a 40 Druid and 40 Wizard helping, but they had other commitments and could not stay to the end.

We also did Danarin's Raid and Derrin's Raid each a second time. For the second time, we removed the 46 Cleric, 40 Cleric and 55 Druid and added 48 Druid, 50 Ranger and 51 Beastlord. This was also an easy raid with this force.

Many thanks to my team for helping me complete this part of the quest. Here are the stats on my new cloak.

Those of you who say that this loot can't possibly result from this quest are correct. Best information suggests it drops off the 5th (Veteran) and 6th (General) phases of the war. Not the scouts.

We cleaned out the Danarin (sp?) and Derrin raids tonight with a group of 54+ just looking to explore a bit. Took about 2 hours for us to get a grimling officer at the Derrin raid camp (very very fast spawns here, like a greenie version of the keg-level FG callers). Dropped a very cool looking but utterly worthless 1hb (10/32 with no stats I think), and a 12/28 7 svcold/fire 1hs (called a twisted stave or something, and yes it was a 1-hand slasher), along with the eye needed to terminate the war and some grimling plans Pt. 3. None of the much nicer gear listed above.

If these items used to be part of the scout quests they've been removed.

Responding to a pretty old post, but I think it's warranted. The majority of the loot listed on this quest were submitted by "yours truly" soon after my guild had raided the heck out of this zone working toward grimling raid 6. The higher end items (with flowing thought, or living shadow items) were dropped by the grimling commander on raid #5. This raid consists of 2 camps and both kitties have to be kept alive in order to win. There was no reward persay except a medallion when you hand in the item to end the raid. The commander is level 46 and is a shadow knight.

Raid 5 is not recommended with less than 3 groups of high level (55+) players for although the mobs are lower level (some light blue at 60) they SWARM and will overwhelm you if you don't have enough people to take them out quickly.

In raid 6, the mobs are all level 48-50 and are VERY high in magic dmg. Ice comet type spells for 980dd were not uncommon from the casters.

The Grimling High Commander was level 60 and chain casted a lure based fear spell that owned 3 groups of level 58-60 players because he would fear all the tanks then kill all the healers while the tanks ran in fear. The loot from these raids is acquired from the commanders and officers... not from a turn-in. If your only interest is loot, then perhaps you should get sufficient forces to keep the vah`shir guys alive and just keep kiling grimlings until the officers/commanders pop more than once.

Good luck.

I do not know what to say. Me and some guildies were so hyped about this quest, as we finally figured with some hard work we could get some decent rewards.

We started with Husman's raid, and worked our way up. I instantly knew something was amiss, from the info given, this quest should have been a handful for me and my guildies. We owned it. Not one of us broke a sweat. Loot was sub-standard, and we kept our spirits up, but after doing Danarin's and Husman's..I decided to try and get to the bottom of this.

And here I am. To say that the loot is 'incorrect' doesn't seem to do this blunder-&%ck justice. The loot listed is WORLDS apart from what actually drops. Suddenly, what once was considred obtainable, we now realize is almost, if not matching; 10'th ring war in difficulty.

I made the mistake of jumping on this quest without reading all the posts. I take blame for that...with my guild most of all, beings I wasted 3 hours of their time for 2 uber Mangey Wolf Hide Bracers. People come to allakhazam for information...correct information. Now, I know I should have read this post, but I am not the only person who has not, I am sure. And i will not be the last to see this AFTER the fact. The loot listed need to be updated to match the quest.
Some clarification...

Hey all - want to point out some things.

The listed rewards on this quest are all wrong. The only thing on this list that dropped while completing the three scout quests given by the kitties in the fort in grimling forest was the Crude Fur Bag, and if I remember right it was not even on this quest which is the third and the most difficult.

These listed rewards look to be nice stuff, but no way they are gonna drop on this simple quest which I am sure could be done by a single group of high 40s low 50s.

* Reward(s): Acrylia Inlaid Wooden Staff
* Bracer of Living Shadow
* Carved Bark Mask
* Charred Bone Ring
* Dirk of the High Grimling
* Gauntlets of Living Shadow
* Ornate War Totem
* Small Twisted Stave

I am interested in exactly what was involved to get to the war that had these drops on it, but this quest that involves protecting Scout Derrin when he bonzais into a grimling camp is not it.

The end of this quest happens when the officer spawns, and you turn in his eye to scout Derrin and he gives you a medal. You take the three medals from the three quests with the different Scouts and put them in a container which then you can use to start yet another war. I am guessing that there is a progression here, and that at some point along the line there are mobs that drop these nice items, but they do not belong listed as rewards on this quest.

If there is some way to get these items to drop on this simple quest please let me know! Otherwise it might be a good idea to get them off the rewards list.

Does the sphere giver get the item only or does it go to anyone in the group? Also are the spheres lore (the ones you buy to activate). The giver could then get a bunch and restart the quest if the 'wrong' item is rewarded. Heck everyone in group could get one and if anyone in group can get the reward then it wouldn't matter who the giver was since all could get access to the reward loot.

# May 04 2002 at 9:18 PM Rating: Default
This quest was simpler then anything else. We followed that scout guy to the camp and just killed everything. Was fun, we didn't have any deaths and it wasn't boreing at all. Hell our lev 39 SK Dinged dureing it. This thing about haveing to be a high lev is simple BS. We went with one group.

52 War
56 Shaman
54 Wiz
52 Bard
39 Cleric
39 SK

The hardest part wasn't killing them, They were easy to kill even our SK was knocking them down fast. The problem was they came in gawd aweful amounts. We could of done this easily with 2 groups of 40's andf probably had better luck just because we need to keep the damn scout alive and its alot easier to just have a tank on each one of them. The final mob HT me for like 4-500 something..which is like not even a dent in my HP. We lost the scout the first time just because our wizard got carried away with her AoE and decided to fry him by accident. but after beating her up telling her to DD we made this look easy.

Could anyone who had done this quest provide any info on how it works? for example, what camp do you raid? There are at least three grimling camps that i have seen in GF. Would this quest be doable with the following people

59 war
60 cleric
55 cleric
53 sk
55 shammy
41 mage

Do the item drop of random mobs during the encounter, or special mobs? I take it that it is like a ring of fire quest. Where mobs come at you in waves, harder mobs in the later waves. Do the Items drop only after a certain wave?

Thanks in advance for any advice on doing this quest.

No, the Scout is a regular ol' NPC, and as such no beneficial spells may be cast. The only way to buff the Scout would be to have a bard/chanter charm him prior to buffing. You could then have the player break the charm and gate out (to avoid possible aggro from the Scout) and be left with a buffed NPC. I doubt you could do this after activating the raid, since the charm might reset the Scout. I'm just guessing, but I'd think the only way to do it would be to charm before activating, then handing in sphere after charm is broken and charmer has zoned.

Finally got to raid 6 the other day and ALL mobs were dark blue to level 60. They are estimated to have about 15k hp each, some of which chain cast a lure based form of ice comet which has the text of *name* is struck my a massive chunk of ice. This DD does upwards of 981dmg with 185 cold resist.

The grimling deathbringers (I think they were called) harm touch for 781 and melee for about 120 or so.

The Grimling High Commander was level 60. Harm touched for 1001, and chain casted a fear spell that NOBODY resisted cause we weren't expecting this guy to land fear on us like that. His melee was around 450 a pop. Unslowable i believe. He will fear every melee in sight then proceed to kill off your clerics and casters while they are unprotected.

If you intend to kill him, better have some tanks with fearless disc ready or you're gonna lose, I guarantee it.

Some of the loot that has been found from these raids (not listed yet on Allakhazam) include:

Bracer of Living Shadow: 15ac, 2dex, 5int, 5wis, 20hp. War, Pal, Shd, Brd.

Gauntlets of Living Shadow: 22ac, +30hp. War, Pal, Shd, Brd.

A mask (which I forget the name of) that's 5ac, 5int, 5wis, effect flowing thought 1. all/all

A range item (an idol) that is 12ac, +8str, +8sta. wt. of 2.0 I believe. also all/all

Also a ring that's 7ac, +75mana, effect enduring breath.

These items aren't going to come easy though. Expect a long HARD camp if you expect to acquire any of these. Mobs in the 6th raid (the war) come in waves of 5-6 mobs at EACH CAMP. You must protect 3 scouts from the onslaught and keep them from dying. I think the 10th ringwar is easier.
