(This is a long quest with a lot of TEMPORARY items involved to begin with...but it's a very fun quest with a really cool Roleplaying element...the Whisperlings! Who knows what other quests will get us "closer" to them, and be able to use their abilities.)

Tiamon Aroo is the Tailoring Merchant in the Building near the bard's camp fire in Shadeweaver's Thicket.

    You say, 'Hail, Tiamon Aroo'

Tiamon Aroo says 'Greetings _____, watch where you step for the [needle clawed hoppers] are just about everywhere!

You say, 'what needle clawed hoppers?'

Tiamon Aroo says 'Those wretched vermin swarm to our city and trade routes in search of the refuse left by careless travelers who pass through these parts. They are just about useless and their stench brings bile to my throat. I would have set out to poison the whole lot of them if it was not for their unique [claws].

    You say, 'what claws?'

Tiamon Aroo says 'The claws of the hoppers act as a [spirit anchor]. They are specialized in tearing into the fiber of the shadow beings that roam the thicket. I find these claws useful in [binding] the silk fashioned by the [shadeweavers].

    You say, 'what spirit anchor?'

Tiamon Aroo says 'A spirit can only materialize within our realm by binding themselves to an object that is a spirit anchor. Some bones and stones have such properties. A spirit anchor can also do the most damage to the material form of such spirits when used as a weapon. I use the claws of the hoppers as a sewing needle of sorts to [bind the silk] made by the [shadeweavers]. A standard sewing needle would only pass through the substance of the silk. The hopper claws can pierce through their ethereal fabric effectively.

(The previous part of this quest doesn't need to be done, but rather gives insight into what Groo McManus means by the "Spirit Anchor")

Groo McManus is in the White Building on the left following the road out of Shar Vahl into Shadeweavers Thicket. He's a Barbarian.
    You say, 'Hail, Groo McManus'

Groo McManus says 'Greetings adventure seeker. I have come from afar to study this strange thicket. The spirits are strong within this region, but they are secretive as well. I am willing to impart my wisdom to those who will aid me in my exploration. Are you [interested?]

    You say, 'I am interested'

Groo McManus says 'Very well then! Let us begin. First you must attune yourself with the nature of spirits. For this you must learn to find a spiritual anchor. Find such a thing within the crater that surrounds Shar Vahl and return it to me. Then we may continue. I cannot tell you more, but there is a Vah Shir who has the knowledge that you seek. Seek him out in this thicket to learn what you can.

Give GrooMcManus the "A Needle Thin Claw"

Groo McManus says 'Excellent! You have done well. I can sense that you are in tune with the spirits around you. Take this, for you will need it in your next task. When you are [ready] for your next lesson let me know.

    You gain experience!!

    You say, 'I am ready'

Groo McManus says 'You have learned a fraction of the nature of the spirit. To exist within our realm they must become a part of our realm by binding themselves within material. The hoplings claws have evolved to tear spirits from their material anchors. A disrupted anchor will normally send a spirit to the planes in which they belong, but sometimes the spirit becomes lost. This has happened within the crater that surrounds Shar Vahl. We must do what we can to [help] the lost spirit. The lost spirit had found the nearest anchor to take refuge in when its own anchor was destroyed. The spirit now lies trapped within the very claws of the hopling that had tried to destroy it. Will you help?

Groo McManus says 'Near the south bridge of Shar Vahl city, a mysterious rock formation hangs precariously within the crater. When you have arrived, you stand beneath the rock and call to the wind, speak the word 'Lumanes', be sure to clear all thoughts from your mind when doing so. If we are not too late, a kindred spirit will speak with you. Take your discoveries to my friend Shavra in the crater, she will know what to do.

(Again, doesn't need to be done, but who can say no to free experience?)

    Your Location is -852.56, 890.03, -343.91
You say, 'Hail, Dar Khura Shavra'

Dar Khura Shavra says 'Lo there wanderer. Something is amiss within the region, have you not felt it? I sense a [whisperling] nearby.

    You say, 'what whisperling?'

Dar Khura Shavra says 'A whisperling, who brings us dreams, you cannot see them. They do no harm, but I sense anger in them. They have made an enemy. If you are willing to aid us in our research, please seek Groo McManus in the shadeweavers thicket, he has some insight on these whisperlings.

The Whisperling can be called (not found, but called) under the glowing rock formation NEG580, POS560
    Sit and say "Lumanes"

    You say, 'Lumanes'

a whisperling speaks softly, 'Lumanes _____, Our cousin, a spirit of frost, is trapped. We may not intervene. Only one of flesh may aid us. Are you one [able to help]? '

You say, 'I am able to help'

a whisperling speaks softly, 'Then we thank you. We will lure it here. But beware, it uses our cousins strength to protect itself.'

    A frost covered hopling attacks

He has about 30 Hitpoints, hits for 1 damage 99% of the time, Burst of Flames (not often) for 4 damage
But, I couldn't do much more than 1 damage to him 90% of the time, and did maybe 3 and 6 the other 2 times I did do more than 1 damage. In other words, VERY easy fight.

You have slain a frost covered hopling!
    You gain experience!!
--You have looted a A Frosted Claw.--
    (A Frosted Claw - NO TRADE/TEMPORARY - Primary Piercing - DMG:2 DLY:25 SV COLD: +1)
    TEMPORARY!

(Note: The frost covered hopling can be summoned any time by saying "Lumanes" in that spot! It's basically a newbie Monster Generator! I got experience at 4, and with the easy fight, he can be killed over and over for experience. Hopefully Verant doesn't realize this and change it -=| )

Go back to Shavra (who is very close) and give her the "A Frosted Claw"

Dar Khura Shavra says 'Oh _____! This is a whisperling, and she is beautiful! You must find a way to free her of this anchor. Take her to Ragnar, he may know what to do. Let me put her in this bag to keep her safe for now.

Your faction standing with Guardians of Shar Vahl has been adjusted by 1.
    You gain experience!!

You get a "Frosted Bag" from her. It's a 0.0 NO TRADE object

Spiritist Ragnar is in the Var Shal Alchemy Shop west of the Bank

    You say, 'Hail, Spiritist Ragnar'

Spiritist Ragnar says 'Well hello... How may I help you?

Give the Frost Bag to Spirit Ragnar

Spiritist Ragnar says 'Eh? What have we here?'' Ragnar examines the frosted claw carefully. He closes his eyes and begins to chant while holding the claw cupped between his hands. As he opens his eyes he nods at you and begins to speak. ''You have done well to bring her here _____. This is a whisperling, her name is Siver. She is very young, so it is hard for me to understand her. From what I gather, she has an important task to fulfill, but I am still unsure what that task may be. Please take her with you for now, I think that is her wish. Perhaps Grawleh will be able to assist us further, and maybe even find a more suitable anchor for her. I think it would be wise to show her to him.

    You gain experience!!
You also get Claw of Frost.

    (Claw of Frost - NO TRADE/TEMPORARY - Primary Piercing - DMG:3 DLY:25 SV COLD: +1)
    TEMPORARY!

Elder Spiritist Grawleh examines the contents of the bag carefully. This is no ordinary spirit _____. It is a whisperling, a bringer of dreams. You are quite lucky, I think she will go with you. She will be able to protect you from cold magic. If you need more protection you can call on her to help you endure the cold. This is how the Dar Khura weave their spells, we ask the spirits for their aid. This scroll will show you how to call on her for her protection. You will also need to construct her a more suitable spirit anchor. This claw will not contain her much longer. Please hurry to Ragnar with the claw and a fresh [bloodling carapace]. It may buy us some time before she fades away.

    You gain experience!!
    He gives back "Siver's Claw"
    (Siver's Claw - NO TRADE/TEMPORARY - Primary Piercing - DMG:3 DLY:23 DEX:+1 SV COLD: +1)
    TEMPORARY!

You may also receive a minor spell.

    You say, 'what bloodling Carapace?'
(I may have done something wrong like cancelled the conversation, because he didn't answer about the carapaces, but they drop from "a Cht`Thk bloodling" in Shadeweaver's Thicket newbie area...you may want to collect 8 in total, you'll need 7 more later. You've been warned.)

Bring Spiritist Ragnar a "Bloodling Carapace" and the Claw of Frost.

Spiritist Ragnar says 'Well done _____, I hope it isnt too late.'' Ragnar begins to chant over the carapace and the claw, holding each in opposite hands. A soft light travels from the claw to the carapace as the claw turns to dust. Ragnar opens his eyes and begins to speak, ''It has worked, but all we have done is buy ourselves more time. While you were away, I have been speaking to Master Barkhem. He has a shield frame that can support these carapaces. You will need to craft such a shield by including this carapace and into the frame along with enough to fill each slot. You are doing quite well young _____, Siver has grown a little stronger. You can make use of her innate dexterity by weaving this spell.''

Spiritist Ragnar hands _____ a scroll before he continues to speak. ''When you have completed the construction of the shield, return it to me and I will strengthen the anchor.''

Your faction standing with Guardians of Shar Vahl got better.
    You gain experience!!

He gives you a Strengthen Scroll (bug?) and a "Frosted Carapace".
It's only a 0.0 NO TRADE item! You can actually pause at this part of the quest! (but why would you want to?)

Master Barkhem is in the Armory to the North of the Pool in front of the Palace
    (I believe his Loc is "202.18, -167.21, -187.62")

Master Barkhem tells you, 'That'll be 3 gold 2 silver 4 copper for the Carapace Shield Frame'.

Buy the Carapace Shield Frame (this quest makes me wonder what else can be put in this frame)

Now head to Shadeweavers and get ready for a long time of running around and killing Cht`Thk bloodlings. The carapace is a pretty uncommon(rare?) drop. This may take over an hour.

Place the "Frosted Carapace" in the Carapace Shield Frame along with 7 Bloodling Carapaces and combine. You'll get a "Dull Frostweavers Shield!"
(Dull Frostweavers Shield - AC 3 DEX: +1 SV COLD:+3 5.0 wt SHM BST)

Ragnar said he'd make the shield stronger when you brought it back to him, so do that. Give the Dull Frostweavers Shield to Spirit Ragnar back in the Alchemy Shop.

Spiritist Ragnar says 'Nicely done _____. This anchor should be sufficient to keep Siver bound to this realm for a while. She is strong enough to blind your enemies with a bright flash of light now, all you have to do is call on her spirit. I still cannot make complete sense of her thoughts, I think she is trying to tell me of another whisperling entrapped within the crater. Keep an eye open for the whisperling Scorpialis.

(Scorpialis is a weapon from the TailFang Quest. I don't know if he's just giving you info on a seperate quest, or if he wants you to finish that too)

Spiritist Ragnar says 'In the meantime, you can seek out a shield made of Xakra. Xakra made of the ethereal fabric of the spirit realm. I know the Shak Dratha within the thicket are weavers of this rare form of shadow silk. Such a shield can help us strengthen the anchor, making it easier for Siver to aid you. It will also improve her health greatly. She has been through a lot and is in rather poor condition as it stands now.
Your faction standing with Guardians of Shar Vahl got better.
    You gain experience!!
You also gained the stronger version of the Frostweavers Shield
    (Frostweavers Shield - AC:4 DEX+1 SVCOLD+4 MAGIC NO TRADE)

(This appears to be the next part of the quest, but is still unsolved from what I hear)

Need all dialogues (these are transcriptions), current faction hits, /loc of all mobs, solution to this quest!

    Calling on the spirits
    # Dec 24 2001 at 11:34 PM Rating: Excellent
I agree that the quest is bugged, as far as which spells you get as a reward for completing portions.

I have a complete copy of my log file, edited to show the quest-related items. (I've done the same for the Khati Sha guild quests involving the claws and cloak.) Each time an NPC refers to "calling on the spirit" (or any variation thereof), he hands you a spell.

We all know as players that it is just a spell, but it's interesting to get a bit of information about the Vah Shir culture, that when they cast a spell, they think of it as calling on the whisperlings to help them. ;)

Anyway, when you start the quest, Groo gives you Burst of Flame since the hopper you have to kill is "frost covered", and would logically be affected by fire attacks (though this didn't help me, since Beastlords can't cast Burst of Flame).

Then you get Endure Cold from Grawleh when he says, "She will be able to protect you from cold magic. If you need more protection you can call on her to help you endure the cold. This is how the Dar Khura weave their spells, we ask the spirits for their aid. This scroll [Endure Cold spell] will show you how to call on her for her protection."

Then you get what appears to be the first bugged spell award from Ragnar: "Siver has grown a little stronger. You can make use of her innate dexterity by weaving this spell."
"Spiritist Ragnar Ragnar hands [player] a scroll [Strengthen, possible bug] before he continues to speak. ''When you have completed the construction of the shield, return it to me and I will strengthen the anchor."

Finally, we expect to get the Flash of Light spell from this last part: "Spiritist Ragnar says 'Nicely done [player]. This anchor should be sufficient to keep Siver bound to this realm for a while. She is strong enough to blind your enemies with a bright flash of light now, all you have to do is call on her spirit."

Again, there's that "call on her spirit" phrase, indicating a spell, not just the natural glow of the shield (as someone else posted). It is obvious that Flash of Light is supposed to be the reward, particularly since it is not sold by any of the spell vendors in the castle, meaning it needs to be quested. Instead, we are given "Berserker Strength" which is an Enchanter spell, and Vah Shir can't even be Enchanters.

A GM tried to tell me that the reward is a random spell, but when I described how the previous spells awarded match what is said by the NPC, I was told to submit a bug report so they could check it out.

I am having trouble locating Elder Spiritist Grawleh, can anyone help me out? Is he in Shar Vahl?? If so, where?

    Thanks

Grawleh is the main shaman guildmaster in the castle. The room is opposite from the Beastlords across the spell vendor room.

i think u have to combine hte no rent xakra silk sheild w/ a hopperhide sheild w/ a needle from taiman aroo (u give him 4 needle thin claws), it makes it, umm, not no rent, theres something like it on eqtraders tailoring recipes of luclin, if anyone finishes this quest id aprreciate it if htey said how

The only thing is that as far as I know, you can't tailor a hopperhide shield. But when you talk to Tiaman Aroo, he never specifically says anything about tattered hopperhide armor, just that you need an object to bind it to. So my guess is that you combine the frostweavers shield, the xakra shield, and the claw needle in a sewing kit. I'll try and see if this works, but if anybody has tried, please post with your results.

Sit down in the glowing plant. Then when the frost covered hopling appears, it will attack you rather than disappearing. I was easily able to kill it at lvl 12 with my pet, btw.
#Anonymous, Posted: Dec 24 2001 at 10:43 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) I tried handing them in to all the people and it did not qork even when i found a shield. yes i found a shield at the Shak Dratha camp and they are no rent, no drop, and lore item and then i tried handing in the dagger and no one took it... i am still trying to figure this out

I agree...where abouts did this shield drop...I got from 33 to 35 last night killing them with my ranger looking for one to drop and never saw one...I was at the very south end where the Warlord is. Anyone else have an idea where this might drop??

One thing you might want to try...
It goes along the basis of the shaded hopperhide armor.
Try Placing the frostweaver shield, the dratha dropped shield, and a claw needle (from Timoo (spelling) the tailoring guy when you give him for needled clawed hoppers) into a sewing kit. I have a strange feeling that will work. Hopefully no (or very low) tailoring skill is needed.

Which Dratha camp? Yesterday, all day, a 15 bst buddy, a 14 cleric, and I (13 bst at the time). We cleared out three rooms (until they started spawning Gor Takus), and not one shield. I did get a Xandra Dat Gauntlet (no idea how to tailor it to make it rentable), and some Xakra Kel pieces. But, no shield.
Is it the camp outside with the guards surrounded by rocks on the path?

    Targetting the Frost Covered Hopling
    # Dec 23 2001 at 11:32 AM Rating: Default
Just as a note - I had the same thing happen to me the first time, i.e., the hopling appeared and disappeared before I could target it. I went back to Groo McManus, figuring that would start the quest again.

At any rate, I realized I wouldn't be able to click on him fast enough with my mouse, so I just hit F8, "A" key, and started fighting him. That allowed my to target him quickly. Also, you really do need a magic weapon to fight him. Fortunately I had one on me at the time. The little bugger resisted all my magic against him. I was casting level 34 shaman spells on him, so apparently he is immune to all but magic-imbued melee weapons.

Be aware that if you are going to continue down this quest, there are several No Rent items along the way. I'd suggest taking a few minutes first and go around Shar Vahl and make some notes about where you see the various Spiritists. That way you can run straight to the person, and not have to worry about starting the quest over because your connection died while you were wandering lost around the city looking to hand in your item to some Spiritist. There are some points where you'll get "normal" items that will be there when you log back in, so if you plan on logging out, those are good points to do it.

    Race/Class/Level restriction?
    # Dec 23 2001 at 2:13 AM Rating: Default
After completing this quest with my level 4 Vah Shir BeastLord (I'm the poster), I decided to make sure I was high enough level to investigate the next part....so I brought on my level 38 Wood Elf Druid...

Well, maybe you have to do the starting of the quest (Tiamon, McGroo, etc) first to *activate* it...but after sitting and saying "Lumanes", the whisperling appeared, I said "I am able to help", the Frost Covered Hopling appeared, then disappeared before I could even target it...well, discovered the reason the rock is glowing is that the whisperling is lighting it up, and it disappeared too, so I had to wait til it reappeared (the light came back on), and tried again, same thing...hopling disappears....anyone else discover this? Maybe you either have to be a Vah Shir or a BeastLord/Shaman...or low enough level?..hmm...

Tip - got the the frosty hopling in time - meditate - then say you are able to help - the frost hopper will agro on you - saving you the trouble (and then my pet goes to town before I even work out what is going on)
    RE: Race/Class/Level restriction?
    # Dec 23 2001 at 9:03 AM Rating: Default
He did that with me too. You have a 2 second time frame to smack him before he poofs. Just kick him.. do anything to get that initial agro then he wont disappear.
    RE: Race/Class/Level restriction?
    # Jan 06 2002 at 6:59 PM Rating: Default
Easiest way I found to target him: hit F8 and the attack button as soon as you're done talking. I think he'll only disappear if you move before attacking. First two times fighting him I tried sic'n my pet on him. Third time I got him. You can fight him all you want. One night, while looking for gravel pit leaves, I killed the thing about six times over.

    Carapace frame
    # Dec 22 2001 at 10:01 AM Rating: Decent
If you hail Master Barkham in the armory he says something about looking for work. You reply "I am looking for work" and he will give you the shield frame, no need to buy it. Maybe not a big deal for some people but the loot in Shar Vahl leaves someting to be desired so not paying 3 gold for the shield can be a big deal for us non twinked people.

This didn't work for my BL...saying to Barkhem I was "looking for work" only made him respond that I could buy the frame from him and make a few shields, and that he would recompense me when they were done. Here's the log:

Master Barkhem says 'That's great news! I could really use a hand. I have constructed some shield frames ideal for use with the carapaces found on [bloodlings]. Unfortunately I do not have the time to collect any of the shells. You can either purchase the frames and keep the shields for yourself, or you can return them to me and I will compensate you for your troubles.

There may be a very simple explanation for mentioning Scorpialis: It is a MAGIC weapon and, as I to my surprise just discovered, the frost covered hopling is immune to non-magic weapons.

Nice idea, but by the time anyone says anything about Scorpialis the Frost covered hopling is long dead and you are pretty much done with the quest as it is now. I tried handing it (scorpialis) to the "wisperling" npc who is in the rock but it just ate my dagger.

They say to look for the Shak Dratha for the Xakra shield, as far as I know, no one has ever seen this item dropped by one. Although, they do drop a Chunk of Condensed Shadow quite often. What I am wondering is this..Can the chunk of condensed shadow be made into sheets of something to replace sheets of metal for the recipe of making a round shield, flask of water, 2 sheets of metal, smithy hammer and round shield mold. Although this is just a guess, if anyone has tried this, please post your results here.

    Blinding?
    # Dec 21 2001 at 5:42 AM Rating: Decent
He mentions that Sivir is strong enough to blind your opponents with a flash of light...

So why doesn't this shield have that ability?!?
    RE: Blinding?
    # Dec 22 2001 at 4:32 AM Rating: Default
He gives you flash of light spell at this point.
    RE: Blinding?
    # Dec 21 2001 at 12:30 PM Rating: Default
There is no flash of light, the light is in fact just the light source eminating from the shield itself, similar to that of a torch.
    RE: Blinding?
    # Dec 21 2001 at 9:42 AM Rating: Default
The story line says that you can call upon her to do different things like blind your opponent then gives you the appropriate shaman spell. Thus a shamans spells are derived from the spirits they call upon. Only problem is at the step you mention its bugged. Instead of recieving the Flash of Light spell you get an enchanter spell. Another step didnt quite follow the story line as well. It says you can call upon her innate dexterity and instead of getting Dexterous Aura you get strengthen.

It all depends on how you look at it, he also says to bring it back to STRENGTHEN the shield, so who knows, also could be that they just decided that they needed a spell that people the level doing this quest could use so the used the ones the BST got earliest, but once again who knows, I mean we are talking about people who think it makes sense to have giant cats living on the moon. :)
    Blood-covered hopling?
    # Dec 20 2001 at 11:37 PM Rating: Decent
Just like there's a frost-covered hopling here in this quest, there's a blood-covered hopling out in Shadeweaver that drops "a serrated claw" which is a lore no-drop magic item. Perhaps a similar type of quest is involved? This is a fairly rare spawn, in the rocks to the left of the road straight out from the Shar Vahl tunnel.

#REDACTED, Posted: Dec 20 2001 at 7:57 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Yes I think you're right. I 'buged this quest too. I tried handing Shavra the dagger, the shaman guildmaster, ragnar, and groo the dagger, they all took it or handed it back. Currently I'm trying to make something out of 8 no drop frosted carapaces int he shield frame, probably wont' work but oh well.

the "A Frosted Bag" I received from Shavra was No Drop, but not No Rent. This might have been changed recently in a patch.

I completed the Scorpialis quest first so when I heard him say that, I tried handing in the dagger, but he gave it back.
I think that after we find the Xacra shield & do the next part, he may want the shield & scorpialis then.

I am just guessing, but I also think the Scorpialis might be for a later part in the quest also. I think it is supposed to be the other trapped wisperling, which Siver mentions, and maybe be handed in with the result from the xakra shield part. Or maybe it should be taken back to the shaman guildmaster or one of the others that the claw and then daggers were handed into? Just trying to figure this out.....
