Speak to Taruun Rolom. He stands on the ledge outside the South Gate to Shar Vahl, to the west of the gate.
You say, 'Hail, Taruun Rolom' Taruun Rolum says 'Hail friend! Are you just out killing time or are you looking to earn a wage?' You say, 'I am looking to earn a wage.' Taruun Rolom says 'Hmmm... I see. Well friend, there is plenty for you to do here. There are all sorts of pests in the hollow that lies below the city. It would be nice if we could get rid of all of them. Perhaps then we could concentrate on real soldiering. With that in mind, we are always looking for another brave young citizen to go down there and kill some of the vermin. Tell the other guards that you are being assigned to help. They will tell you what to do.' Khala Dun Bokh stands guard at the south end of the South Bridge. You say, 'I am being assigned to help.' Khala Dun Bokh says "Thank you for coming to assist. We are always looking for hungry new soldiers. Young soldiers get old much too fast these days. Just look at me.' He smiles at this comment. 'Do this old soldier a favor and go down there and gather up a handful of rhino beetle eyes', he says and looks at the mass of crawling creatures that wait below. 'Beetle eyes not only taste good... they keep your fur shiny as well." Rhino beetle eyes are a fairly rare drop from the rhinobeetles in the pit. Gather and give four of them to Khala Dun Bokh. Khala Dun Bokh tosses the beetle eyes into his mouth & attempts to say something to the effect of "here is your payment." The sound of crunching gristle & popping eyeballs prevents him from saying it properly. You gain experience!! You receive 3 copper from Khala Dun Bokh. You receive 3 silver from Khala Dun Bokh. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

I've done this quest twice so far and both times I've only received coin. Vah Shir Rogue here.

I don't know if there is an actual pattern to this or not, but I noticed that whenever i turned in eyes to him, if i kept most of my armor in my backpack instead of worn slots, i got armor for the empty slots. So if you are loaded with padded armor from the Whiptail Poison Sac quest, try taking half of it off when you cash in your eyes. By trying it this way I came out with the hopperhide tunic, leggings, cap and a wooden practice longsword for my lvl 7 warrior.

I have done this quest about 6 times and every time I managed to get a armor piece. My thought?
This is class specific, as me and every other warrior I know who's done it get nothing but armor and money(decent newb armor too). I have watched BL's do this one and get the hammer and money or just money. While the eyes don't drop often, this is one of the better newb quests for Warriors. You have to kill bettles anyway, so just kill, collect the reward and kill some more. You'll have a decent amount of armor by 6th.

At level 4 I got 1/4 blue xp, 12sp 8cp when I turned in the eyes. The eyes sell for roughly 2sp 4cp to vendors so you're still making almost the same in cash, plus you're getting xp, so it's probably worth doing this quest if you're level 4 and under and hunting in the pit anyway.

Do you need an acrylian slate to do quests in Luclin?
the acrylia slates are needed for the class specefic series quests....citizenship....recruit....apprentice....they go in series and give Vah shir/1class only items

Your not entirely correct there... there are some quests that aren't class specific that require the slate... such as the Xakra Tooth Dart quest

i only saw rhino beetle hatchlings in the pit. killed about a thousand of them and never saw an eye drop. are there beetles down there that are not the 'hatchling' type?

ive been in the pit for days, one reason or another, and the only beetles in it are hatchlings. i have killed many, and recieved many eyes, but sold them all, untill now.

what quest needs hammer i know of one that needs flail but not hammer and just buy the hammer there is guy who sells all the wooden practice weapons

The guard is located across the south bridge at the entrance to the tunnel to Shodow Thicket. He doesnt seem to give the clue words, but say 'I have been assigned to help'. Give four beetle eyes.
I got experience and a wooden practice mace. I believe the practice mace can be used in another quest in Shadow Thicket.

I am lvl 1 and the beetle eyes that I am suppose to collect at this lvl are red to me.

All Vah Shir can get well into level 2 without ever having had to fight a single mob just by completing their citizenship quest. No one need go into the pit at level 1 if you don't want to.
The Rhino beetles in the pit range from level 1-5 as I have noticed, same as the scorpions.
It does appear that some areas in the pit tend to have higher level MOBS than others...
Luckily the beetles will not agro on you when you start killing one (unlike the Klicniks in North Qeynos).

i have hailed all guards...and of course Khala Dun Bokh. When i hail him, he says something about dangers when i pass through the gates. Afterwards, when i ask him what dangers he says something else, irrelevant however. When i ask him about my offering assistance, he does not reply.
I would appreciate any help. Newbie armor is a must...for newbie levels at least.

Considering I can get 2sp, 4cp for each rhino beetle eye I sell... I hope the rewards are worth it.

I have hailed every guard on both ends of the south bridge & haven't found this quest yet. What is the name of the NPC & exactly where is he or she? Thanks for any help.....
