This quest is the next step for the Vah Shir bard after he/she has finished the Vah Shir Citizenship quest.

Gherik Alarhun (loc p257, n511) can be found in the pottery store; facing the Arena, the pottery store is the last store on the left beside the Arena. He will not say anything when he is hailed, just give him your slate.

Gherik Alarhun says 'Good day, ______, I've been expecting you. It is both my duty and my pleasure to oversee this early stage of your training. To begin, you must display basic combat capability. To this end, return to me with three shells of scorpions and I will instruct your further.'

These scorpions can be found in the Shar Vahl pit and the shells are uncommon.

Gherik Alarhun examines the shells, 'These will do fine. I will fashion a buckler from these shells that will help to preserve your life in combat. As I busy myself with its construction I send you on your next task. As a disciple of the Jharin you will become skilled in the art of pottery.'

Gherik Alarhun says 'Grind the femur bone of the four grimlings in this container. Take the resulting powder and, in the same container, combine water and xakra worm bile. The resulting clay will yield a special bowl when spun with this sketch and a flask of water on a pottery wheel. Bring the unfired bowl to me.'

He will give you a Claymixing Bowl to put the femur bones in and a reusable sketch. The skeleton grimlings can be found in the Shar Vahl pit and the femur bones (no drop, not stackable) are uncommon. The xakra worm larvae can be found in the pit also and the bile (no drop, stackable) is common. It took me five attempts at this before I succeeded in making the unfired Jharin bowl. Succeeded at Pottery Skill: 36.

Gherik Alarhun carefully inspects the bowl, 'Not bad for a beginner. Fire it in a kiln with a flask of water and a quality firing sheet. Broker Fahaar is in need of your help. It so happens that he can help you as well. He can supply you with the materials to transform your bowl into a drum that will enhance your percussion songs. Show him your acrylia slate and return to me with the bowl of the Jharin, your initiate's cloak, a stretched hopperhide and a leather cord.

Broker Fahaar (loc p228, n24) can be found just before you enter the surrounding walls of the palace to the right, under a merchant setup.

Broker Fahaar says 'Excellent, I can always use someone eager to work. I require young rockhopper hides to stretch for some special tailoring projects. Combine in this sack the hides of four young rockhoppers and return to me the full hopperhide sack, I will give you a stretched hide in return.

He will give you a 4-slot Young Hopperhide Sack to put the young rockhopper hides in. The young rockhoppers can be found in the Shar Vahl pit and the hides (no trade, not stackable) are uncommon. After you give the combined hides to Broker Fahaar, he will give you the stretched hopperhide and a leather cord.

Give the bowl of the Jharin, your initiate's cloak (from the Vah Shir Citizenship quest), the stretched hopperhide and the leather cord to Gherik.

Gherik Alarhun binds the stretched hide to the bowl with the leather cord, 'Wonderful! You have done well and are ready for the next portion of your training. I have finished your buckler and enhanced your cloak. They will both prove to be very valuable to you in your service to the Vah Shir. Show your buckler to Hymnist Gawfed for further instruction. May your deeds bring honor to the Jharin!'

Gherik Alarhun shouts 'People of Shar Vahl, it is with great pleasure that I announce the Jharin has accepted as an official recruit. This honorable citizen will henceforth be charged with the duty of supporting and magnifying the spirit of our people through song while always being eager to help any Vah Shir in need. Please help me in celebrating ______ coming of age!'

You gain experience!!

Here is the dialogue:

Gherik Alarhun says 'Good day, _____, I've been expecting you. It is both my duty and my pleasure to oversee this early stage of your training. To begin, you must display basic combat capability. To this end, return to me with three shells of scorpions and I will instruct your further.'

You can get the shells off of 'a scorpion' (never got them to drop from the 'whiptail scorpions' in the same pit) Looks like I just got exp for handing it in.

~~~~~
The container/bowl given is called a 'Claymixing Bowl' Lore, No Trade. Medium size, 3.0 weight, 4 capacity, Large size Cap.
There are several items that you can collect while doing these quests. I
Have put together these listings in the hope it will save you a little time
going back and forth to areas or zones.
The items I have marked Tradeskill are the basic irwms required. To account
for combine failures, you will likely require many more than just the basic
number. The final four items are needed to create items for trade with the
other Vah Shir classes. You will need at least 5 of each. One for yourself
and four to create the items you will need to trade for the other class items
you require.
Don't bother trying the Progressive Pottery quest to up your pottery skills. EQtraders reported this quest bugged in June of 2003 and I can confirm as of today it is still bugged. Lazy SOE programmers! If you have a failure doing the final part, you lose your Finely Crafted Runequils enforcing a total repeat of the quest...... 2 years, and still not fixed...say no more!
3 more years .. and nothing has changed .. Nothing more rewarding than farming the noobie pit around Sharval..Nothing more boring than camping rhinobeetles at lev 50+ .. Even after the Last step was far past trivial needed 6 sets of runequills to finish this quest. Finished it merely out of spite .
This doesn't mention that you actually need pottery skill to finish this quest. I put 21 points into pottery after failing to fire the first bowl I made. I have failed to even make the bowl 5 tries since the first bowl. Not sure I am going to bother to do this quest.
I was lucky and given a nice sword and shield to use in the beginning so i cant complain,and then i got some lv and some coin first so that i could start this thing at lv 6 and take one part at a time nomatter how long as im a quest type player hense the name of the game.
I trust all of you will make the right chioce and go on with the game.
Found a ground spawn for the black silt clay at -1146, 406 on one of the islands near 2 trees. just southwest is an island with a pond in the middle and directly east you can see the village.
Hope this helps. The spawn is pretty quick, too. I pick up one, kill a grimling, then another spawns. have 4 now, looking for other classes on Cazic Thule to trade items. Rogue, Shaman and warrior.
I had the same problem when I finished this quest for my new Bard Kitty last night --- and I DO have training points in percussion instruments. I tried unequipping both the primary and secondary and then equipping the drum - No good. I tried camping and relogging - No good. Did you ever figure this out?
Please let me know....
I just completed this portion of the quest and I had no problem equiping the drum. One thing you didn't mention was if you have put a point in percussion. You need to have a point in it before you can really use the skill.
After the Feathered Cloak
# Aug 23 2002 at 2:16 AM Rating: Excellent
Once you have collected the 7 owlbear feathers (from either the bears in Hollowshade or the ones in Paludal), combine them (unstacked), with your initiate cloak in the Large Cloth Sack the hymnist gave you. Hand this in and he will say :
Hymnist Gawfed says 'It looks like you're all set. I'll have this sent over to my brother at once. Thank you again for fetch the vase for me. I can't wait to give it to the missus. I just know that she's going to love it. I have another task for you. It shouldn't take much time at all. Your cloak won't be done for a while, so you can do this while you wait. Take this piece of parchment to Jangle. He'll give you a bag of lute strings. I'm restringing all of my instruments before the party. Please be quick. Thank you again.'
Your faction standing with Jharin got better.
You gain experience!!
Handing the letter to Jangle results in :
Jangle says 'I would love to fill this order for you friend, but the lad that we sent out into the moor to hunt up our last batch of owlbear guts has not returned. No guts, no strings. I'm afraid that I have neither. If your master will allow it, perhaps you could go gather the guts for me. If you complete this task, I will waive the fee for his next couple of orders. I'm sure that he'll find that proposal pleasant enough. Here's a bag to gather the guts in. Please fill it before you return to me.'
Your faction standing with Guardians of Shar Vahl got better.
You gain experience!!
This is as far as I have got. I understand the guts are nodrop off the bears in Hollowshade only. You will need 8.
RE: After the Feathered Cloak
# Sep 02 2002 at 1:10 AM Rating: Excellent
Gather the 8 Owlbear Guts and combine. Give the new bag back to Jangle...
Jangle says 'Thank you for gathering these materials for me. This bag should last for some time. I'll need to clean this bag and make the strings. While I'm doing that, please take this note back to Gawfed and have him specify how many of each string he wants. He only listed the sizes in his note, not the quantities.'
Your faction standing with Guardians of Shar Vahl got better.
You gain experience!!
Hymnist Gawfed says 'I really must be losing my mind. I could have sworn I specified the quantities. Oh well, I apologize for the confusion. Please take this back to him with my apologies.'
Your faction standing with Jharin got better.
You gain experience!!
Jangle says 'Very good, he's got it all written down this time. These strings should work nicely for him, and let's not mention the fact that they are absolutely free. Take care and remember to shop here for all of your Jharin needs.'
Your faction standing with Guardians of Shar Vahl got better.
You gain experience!!
Hymnist Gawfed says 'My dear friend, Sisal, you have been a wondrous help! Though we have not had an opportunity to work on the more refined Jharin teachings, you have definitely proven yourself to be an honorable citizen and worthy apprentice. My brother has returned with your cloak. Please take it along with the title of Jharin Apprentice. To further demonstrate my appreciation of your work for me, please take this lute.'
Hymnist Gawfed shouts 'Everyone, please welcome my student and friend, Sisal, to the rank of Jharin Apprentice!'
Hymnist Gawfed says 'Now, please meet with Aljuum Mohim. He will be responsible for your training during my holiday. Please show him the lute that I just gave you. He'll most likely be in a tavern somewhere. I just hope that he is sober. Take care, friend!'
Your faction standing with Jharin got better.
Aljuum is in one of the taverns in the south-east poor quarter, on the ground floor.
Aljuum Mohim says 'That is quite a lute. Gawfed has an incredible gift in that area. I don't have the patience to build instruments. I prefer to use my time for other things. I'm sure that Gawfed will fill you in on the more delicate side of our craft when he gets over his holiday. Until that time, I'll get you started on the other part of being a Jharin. Here, take your lute and this bag. Once you get that stowed away, buy me a drink. If you can guess my favorite drink, I'll start you on your lesson.'
The Barkeep sells about 8 drinks, I started with the LAST one and got lucky first time...
Barkeep Rawlf tells you, 'That'll be 9 silver 4 copper per Ferocious Feline Cider.'
Aljuum Mohim sips the drink and smiles. 'Very good! I guess I should get you started.' He says as he finishes the drink that you just purchased. 'Our kin have encountered a number of beasts since the time of our arrival here. Your lesson today will center around one such creature. Maybe that will give you a better understanding of our role here. Bah, Taruun scouts... a real Jharin can do twice as much in combat... well, I digress. You're here to learn about wolves, not my petty animosities.
You say, 'what wolves?'
Aljuum Mohim says 'The wolves that I speak of have no need for sight. They are products of the darkness that surrounds us. Their ability to move in the darkness and attack in packs makes them a serious threat to any Vah Shir that walks beyond our city's gates. I fear them more than I fear the twisted little people that live in the caves around here. It is the duty of each citizen to help control the number of these creatures. Fill the bag that I just handed you with the jawbones of two young sonic wolves and I'll know that you have a real understanding of the ferocity of those creatures. If you return, I'll have something that you may find interesting.'
RE: After the Feathered Cloak
# Sep 05 2002 at 8:31 AM Rating: Excellent
And now the final chunk!
Combine the 2 jawbones from Sonic Wolf Pups to make a Bloody Cloth Sack to hand back to Aljuum in the pub.
Aljuum Mohim says 'How was your little encounter with those beasts? Quite nasty in combat, eh? I told you as much. Well, now that you've seen them firsthand, I'll tell you how to deal with them like a true hunter. Take this hilt piece and show Hana Sulm. She'll give you some sketches. Once you have those sketches, go to Arms Historian Qua and purchase the tomes on Wolf Bane Lore or something like that. He'll know what you mean. You can use those books and the sketches to make a weapon that offers considerable power against those wolves. Once you have the weapon, bring it to me with your apprentice cloak. I'll have something for you. Now go away and let me finish this drink.'
Your faction standing with Guardians of Shar Vahl got better.
You gain experience!!
Hana Sulm is next to Chogar in the SE corner.
Hana Sulm says 'Well, you're going to need to practice for a while to make these things. Take these sketches and read up on the lore concerning sonic wolves. You'll learn how to use the sketches. Practice all you can. I'm sure that you're going to have a lot of people coming to you with requests.'
Your faction standing with Guardians of Shar Vahl got better.
Arms Historian Qua is behind Gawfed.
Arms Historian Qua tells you, 'That'll be 4 platinum 8 gold 8 copper for the Wolf Bane Lore: Volume. I.'
Arms Historian Qua tells you, 'That'll be 4 platinum 8 gold 8 copper for the Wolf Bane Lore: Volume. II.'
Arms Historian Qua tells you, 'That'll be 4 platinum 8 gold 8 copper for the Wolf Bane Lore: Volume. III.'
Arms Historian Qua tells you, 'That'll be 4 platinum 8 gold 8 copper for the Weapon Assembly Kit.'
Off you go on the Sonic Wolf Weapon...
Ok, this part is pissing me off. I have killed in excess of 50 owl bear cubs in Hollowshade Moor and not found a single feather. Are the feathers just so rare that it is going to take 20+ hours of killing them to get enough or is it broken?
The feathers are a rare drop off of any owlbear in Hollowshade Moor. I was bored one night and decided to get the feathers for my bard with the aid of my main, a high level necro. The owlbears were winning the war, so there were a lot of them up. I killed them constantly for two hours and finally got seven feathers. To put this into perspective, I got five Perfect Owlbear Pelts over the course of those two hours. The feathers are pretty rare, and they didn't drop at a higher rate off cubs as opposed to Grapplers or Razorbeaks.
It sounds like the drop rate in Paludal isn't much better, but obviously that will be a more feasible option for most bards. If you plan to get the feathers by killing owlbear cubs in PC, you'd better plan on killing 300 to 400 cubs.
Actually, was running around with my Paladin yesterday on the islands in Hollowshade near the Paludal zone, and there was a ground spawn of black silt clay. There are 2 there, looks black with red lines through it. Was up near one of the trees, think it was the island to the right of the first one you come to from Paludal. Hope that is helpful.
Ladies and gentelmen. I found it. I found the missing link that everyone has been wondering about. The Black Silt Clay. U have to play Ayre's Aquatic somthing or another well anyways then u get to go diving for buried treasure j/k u go all the way down to the bowwom of the small pnd in front of the paludal zone corridor. Keep going. Farther. Just a little more. then look on the bottom of the lake and u should see something in the water that is the black silt clay woo hoo us bards can finally finish our part. now the hard part finding some of the other stuff.
Hey guys! I am sorry to tell u al this but YES they are NO DROP easiest way to get them is to go to grimling zoneline and pull sonicwolf pups. Kill them and loot there corpse obviously and then u may or may night find a jawbone. It looks exactly like a jaw bone you will know when u see it. Also i did this and now i am on the sonicwolf weapon. I am in a guild Thank God. Great guild by the way (Defenders of Luclin). Mostly people who just hang around on Luclin. I managed to find just about every class of vah shir that did the quest all i need to know is where the black silt clay is and where I can get the ashes from a shaman performing a dark ritual. Good Luck guys the invaders (people who think this zone is for leveling) are out there and love to ***** up the war.
Here's some information on the jaw bone drop. I started doing this one with my bard, but figured out pretty quick that this was going to be another super-rare drop. I guess the fact that you only need two of them should have told me that.
I pulled out my main, a high level necromancer, and just started a sonic wolf genocide. It took about an hour to get two of them to drop (they are no-drop). I got one off a wolfling, and one off a wolf. None dropped off of the pups, but that probably means nothing.
If you plan to get the jawbones with your bard, be prepared to kill a LOT for sonic wolves for mediocre experience.
