This quest is the next step for the Vah Shir bard after he/she has finished the Vah Shir Citizenship quest.

Gherik Alarhun (loc p257, n511) can be found in the pottery store; facing the Arena, the pottery store is the last store on the left beside the Arena. He will not say anything when he is hailed, just give him your slate.

Gherik Alarhun says 'Good day, ______, I've been expecting you. It is both my duty and my pleasure to oversee this early stage of your training. To begin, you must display basic combat capability. To this end, return to me with three shells of scorpions and I will instruct your further.'

These scorpions can be found in the Shar Vahl pit and the shells are uncommon.

Gherik Alarhun examines the shells, 'These will do fine. I will fashion a buckler from these shells that will help to preserve your life in combat. As I busy myself with its construction I send you on your next task. As a disciple of the Jharin you will become skilled in the art of pottery.'

Gherik Alarhun says 'Grind the femur bone of the four grimlings in this container. Take the resulting powder and, in the same container, combine water and xakra worm bile. The resulting clay will yield a special bowl when spun with this sketch and a flask of water on a pottery wheel. Bring the unfired bowl to me.'

He will give you a Claymixing Bowl to put the femur bones in and a reusable sketch. The skeleton grimlings can be found in the Shar Vahl pit and the femur bones (no drop, not stackable) are uncommon. The xakra worm larvae can be found in the pit also and the bile (no drop, stackable) is common. It took me five attempts at this before I succeeded in making the unfired Jharin bowl. Succeeded at Pottery Skill: 36.

Gherik Alarhun carefully inspects the bowl, 'Not bad for a beginner. Fire it in a kiln with a flask of water and a quality firing sheet. Broker Fahaar is in need of your help. It so happens that he can help you as well. He can supply you with the materials to transform your bowl into a drum that will enhance your percussion songs. Show him your acrylia slate and return to me with the bowl of the Jharin, your initiate's cloak, a stretched hopperhide and a leather cord.

Broker Fahaar (loc p228, n24) can be found just before you enter the surrounding walls of the palace to the right, under a merchant setup.

Broker Fahaar says 'Excellent, I can always use someone eager to work. I require young rockhopper hides to stretch for some special tailoring projects. Combine in this sack the hides of four young rockhoppers and return to me the full hopperhide sack, I will give you a stretched hide in return.

He will give you a 4-slot Young Hopperhide Sack to put the young rockhopper hides in. The young rockhoppers can be found in the Shar Vahl pit and the hides (no trade, not stackable) are uncommon. After you give the combined hides to Broker Fahaar, he will give you the stretched hopperhide and a leather cord.

Give the bowl of the Jharin, your initiate's cloak (from the Vah Shir Citizenship quest), the stretched hopperhide and the leather cord to Gherik.

Gherik Alarhun binds the stretched hide to the bowl with the leather cord, 'Wonderful! You have done well and are ready for the next portion of your training. I have finished your buckler and enhanced your cloak. They will both prove to be very valuable to you in your service to the Vah Shir. Show your buckler to Hymnist Gawfed for further instruction. May your deeds bring honor to the Jharin!'

Gherik Alarhun shouts 'People of Shar Vahl, it is with great pleasure that I announce the Jharin has accepted as an official recruit. This honorable citizen will henceforth be charged with the duty of supporting and magnifying the spirit of our people through song while always being eager to help any Vah Shir in need. Please help me in celebrating ______ coming of age!'

You gain experience!!

owlbear guts
# Dec 14 2001 at 1:06 PM Rating: Default
what the past guy said. what do these look like? i have gone from level 11 to 15 now on owlbears, rockhoppers and beetles in hollowshade moor.

killed roughly around 200 or so owlbears in this time and not once have seen any guts. i have tried the fat meat, the tendions, the bile, even the halfway digested stuff and none of it is guts. i petitioned asking this to be looked into cause i dont think they are dropping at all i even took my 60 shaman and killed the higher owlbears in the caves and the even higher ones in grimling forest and havent seen one gut drop at all.

Owlbear Guts

Ok, in case you didn't notice, these quests are kinda set up to tell you where to go to get both items, and generally the next area you should hunt in. Once you are on the owlbear feathers part, sadly, you might not be able to solo them just yet, but at lvl 13, they are even/blue, maybe even a rare yellow. As I've seen it, the feathers are rare, and, believe it or not, the owlbear guts are even more rare. Yes, they drop off the same critters.

Ok so you say they drop off the owlbear cubs huh? well, what do they look like and were did it drop? I have been fighting owlbear cubs for 3 days now and after 2 losses of level and finally getting the feathers, I have yet to see an owlbear gut. Could it be that this part of the quest is borked?
RE: Owlbear Guts
# Dec 31 2001 at 6:53 AM Rating: Default
I had no problem finding guts of the owlbear cubs. I found the amount I needed in maybe 3 hrs (in that time I found only one feather, some highlevel hunting at the cave gave me the rest). Owlbear guts LOOKS LIKE FATTY MEAT. Check it every time it drops. Fatty meat dropped a little more ofter, but not that much. Maybe 2 fatty meats for every gut or something.

Anyway soloing owlbears is no problem once you can bellow, just twist selos with 2 boastful bellows and run in a circle between the kitty camp and town. Melee some if you like, but start kiting once you hit half health. You cant run fast enough at low health, and the cubs hit very hard for their level. I soloed yellow conning cubs just fine doing this. It took me about 5 min to kill one. Blue and even cons even quicker. Their hps doesnt seems to be too high for their level, unlike the damage the hit for. And remember... Guards will not help you, unless they fixed that too since I was there. So zone if trouble.

On a more dissapoining note... Once I got the lute it was BUGGED. It did nothing to enhance my songs. It goes in main hand and you can use a shield or weapon in your secon hand. Maybe that has something to to with it being bugged. I bug reported it, and petitioned, so maybe its fixed now. The lute has been in my bank for 2 weeks and I havent checked it. Using a store bought mandolin instead : p
Jihli Mahej and gawfed stuff
# Dec 11 2001 at 11:53 PM Rating: Default
okies jihli mahej can be found literally next door to the registrar's office...if you don't know where that is by now you should ;-)... face the registrars door the turn left and go in the door that will be in front of you jihli is just inside to the right... give her receipt from gawfed she will give pieces of broken vase <lore no drop> she tehn tells you to go see chogar for help in getting vase repaired.... chogar is found at the very eastern end of that area sitting on the ground with another vendor and i think there is a pottery wheel there. give chogar the pieces he gives you a reusable sketch of the vase and tells you to spin it with a medium block of clay and a flask of water then to fire the resulting vase with a quality firing sheet. once you manage to do that take the vase back to gawfed and that is when you get the owlbear feather quest.

Having trouble with the 'medium block of clay' -- is it something I need to purchase or is there a recipe for it (clay usually come in 'block', 'small' or 'large', but no medium)?

Ok so I take the tedious task of collecting the Medium Quality Rockhopper Hides and with a skill of 3 and a hell of a lot of luck I made the belt. Woot I say time to go get my reward...so off I go with my belt and my dagger. I turn them in only to recieve the following:

Broker Fahaar says, ' (Ok for some reason even though I take the screen shor right the first lines always get chopped off so its missing part again :P) shoulder. He then says ' I can tell its hurried work, but it will do. I suppose your ready to learn some needlework. The needlework really makes the belt. Here, this needle set will allow you to learn the basics of our trade. You'll want to practice on some [Black Chitin Belts] and some [Bone Beaded Belts]. Bring me one example of each of these and your needle set to show me that you've mastered the basics of this sort of needlework. If your work is good enough you might be able to sell a peice or two as well."

You say, 'what black chitin belts'

Broker Fahaar says, 'Black chitin belts are made by using the Vah Shir needle set and a Xakra silk to thread some sections of scorpion carapace onto a rough belt strap. The belts looks great and they are rumored to make you feel stronger. You'll want to use the Vah Shir needle set I just gave you with the silk, as normal needles will most likely break off if you try to push them through a scorpion carapace.'

You say, 'what bone beaded belts'

Broker Fahaar says, 'Bone beaded belts are made by threading grimling finger bones onto a rough belt strap with a silk string. The bones are often tough to peirce, so you'll have to use your Vah Shir needle set on them. Be careful not to poke yourself.'

Well thanks alot you SOAFB...sorry for my french...so now I wasted my freakin Vah Shir skinning knife. so now I need to go and collect 16 damn Young Rockhopper Hides again. o joy. BTW the Vah Shir Needle Set is [Lore,No Drop] and off course fit in a large sewing kit. So we need 2 more Rough Belt Straps,? number of Grimling Finger Bones (No idea where to get these),2 Silk Strings,1 Scorpion Carapace. thats if you actually suceed. Hopefully people will post useful loc of where some stuff can be found or what reward is if I dont get it before they do. I need to get another ^^%^^&*& Vah Shir Skinning Knife. Dont make the same mistake I did :)

Did this tailoring quest today -- collected the 16 young hopper hides from pit, and got the leather straps to return to Broker Fahaar. He gave me a skinning knife and told me to use it on MQ hopper hides to make a belt strap. Hearing that he would not return skinning knife (from the post above) I made five straps from the 12 MQ pelts I had (not trivial at skill of 26).

Returned skinning knife with one belt strap as Fahaar requested, and he gave me back the skinning knife with a Vah Shir needle kit. Then he tells me how to make the Black Chitin and Bone Beaded belts.

Combined a scorpion carapace (from pit), Shadeling silk thread, Vah Shir needle kit, and belt strap, failing the first time -- needle kit was returned. Second time was a success, resulting in the Black Chitin Belt (AC 3 STR+3 wt 0.7). Lore, no drop, and Vah Shir (all classes) only. Not a bad little item.... Again, not trivial at tailoring skill level of 26.

Now to find those grimling finger bones.

Okay...i've gotten the receipt from Gawfed, however he says to give it to THE merchant. I see someone posted that the merchant is in building 8 on the eqatlas map, but what do you say to get the dialogue going? I don't want to give it to the wrong person and lose it. Any help here?

I cant seem to find the cat to give the receipt to, I went to building 8 on the EQ atlas like someone suggested, but no Jihli Mahej up there, just 2 tailoring vendors and some other cat. I wish the guards would be more helpful and answer when I ask about location of npcs like they used to be : )
Bard Quest
# Dec 10 2001 at 9:00 PM Rating: Default
After you do the cloak quest, buckler, & drum, you are sent out yet again, to procure a vase, but oh no.. its broke, so you have to make it, after you turn that in you are instructed to go procure Owlbear Feathers to upgrade your cloak, you will need 7 feathers + the cloak. After all that hard work and dieing just to get the feathers, you turn in your hard earned bag....then you are sent out again to Jangle, who is next to Gherik in the pottery shop. He needs you to fill his bag up with.. none other than... Owlbear guts..
Whew.. good thing I saved those no drop items. But... none of them are called owlbear guts, there is fatty owlbear meat that looks like guts, but that did not work, I tried those. Thus this is the part where I am stuck.... I've talked away to Jangle but he just wants to sell me stupid bowls... hehe...

Just an FYI: I am a 16 Vah Shir Rogue and had to get the fatty meat from owl bears for my quest. The Grimy Owlbear Cubs in Paludal do not drop any of the required quest components for any of these quests. In Hollowshade Moor, upon entering, to the left of the Outpost on the hill spawn Owlbear cubs. They do not have the Screech attack (a nasty HT with an AGI debuff) and con blue or even to me at levl 14-15. These drop all of the mentioned items: Fatty Owlbear meat (for rogues), Owlbear tendons, Owlbear guts (which graphic is identical to the fatty meat) and Owlbear bile of the 20 or so I killed, I saw one bile). They hit pretty hard and have double attack, but you can usually beat them at lvl 15.

On a side note, the Guards will NOT aggro them if you pull to the outpost.

When I saw him say "owlbear guts" for lute strings, I checked my inventory and low-and-behold, I had 5 no-drop "owlbear tendons" that looked like strings. So I set out and spent a couple hours collecting 3 more, all to find out that these did NOT combine.

I am too stuck on this part of the quest and it stinks cuz I'm cloak-less. I tried the owlbears in paludal but they didn't drop guts (at least not in the fist 20 bears or so). My assumption is that they aren't dropping like they are supposed to, much like young hopper hides weren't dropping for a while, or you gotta get him to talk more. I have 4 feathers atm, and if I collect 7, I'm going to MQ the slate/note with a new char and start all over (since I lost my cloak that's my only choice).

I have also searched for the required "owlbear guts" with no luck. I camped the owlbear caves in hollowshade for 3 hours in order to gather the 7 feathers and got nothing rezembling guts. I then went to the grimy owlbears in paludal for 2 hours (4 spawns on a 8 min timer) and the only thing of note was "a wailing substance" in the shape of a carnelian. not likely the answer. i think out best lead is the tendons as they sound most befitting a lute string. could you possible post where you found them ?
Location of Hymnist Gawfed
# Dec 10 2001 at 6:34 PM Rating: Default
You will find him in a building next to the Arena in the North West part of that area. You will know you are in the correct building when you see lots of pottery wheels and kilns. He is one of the 4 venders located in that building.
Just to let you know. You will also need to get 4 young rockhopper hides. They fall off the young rockhoppers in the pit. You will need them for the stretched skin and cord that you need to turn back into Gawfed along with your fired bowl and cloak.

You do not need to master tailoring to get this far. You just hand Broker Fahaar your Personal Acrylic sheet and he will give you the quest. But do this only after Gwafed tells you to. (That should be after you turn in the Fired Bowl you just made for the latest part of this quest.)

FOUR scorpion shells are required
# Dec 10 2001 at 5:44 PM Rating: Default
Sorry if this double posted, I hit the wrong button :)
I am in the midst of this quest and was going to write in with it, but due to some horrid lag, I didn't get too far. Was/am in the midst of improving my pottery skill in order to get the darn bowl done.
Regardless, when I did the part of the quest that requires the shells, I was told to get 4 of the suckers. I finally did (after killing many whiptail scorpions, thinking they were the ones as I hadn't found the regulars yet & freaking out because I didn't get one shell) get all four shells and turned them in only to find that there was more to it than I'd first thought--ta-dah! the femurs and bile and pottery. I hadn't bothered training in pottery because everyone says it's a crappy skill/trade. I also had tossed (and not picked up) MANY femurs because I was under the impression that they were only for Warriors (quest).
On that note, if I get any more good tidbits, I'll write back :)
Good day, all.

It's 3 shells, whoever told you otherwise was trying to agitate you. Believe me I've done the quest with my kitty bard, did the resulting quest (no failures, made sure to train my pottery to 36 BEFORE I tried to make anything for this part, no trouble at all), then did the next part of the quest..collected 4 young hopperhides, combined them in my bag, recieved from the merchant, and turned that in. Got the stretched hide and a leather cord. Turn those 2 things, my bowl, and my citizenship cloak in to Gherik and got a drum, a buckler, and my next quest.

That's weird. When I did it, Gherik asked for 4 and he took 4. Oh, well. As long as no one is messed up by my info.

Ok after I turned in the drum to Hymnist Gawfed he said thanks for the drum and gave me a buckler. I didn't get any information from him. He also kept the drum. Has anyone received any information for a next step in quests for bards?
I don't know if I was supposed to receive a buckler from Gherik or not because I didn't.

Where do I find Hymnist Gawfed? Not on top of the castle, or out in the Thicket training area, and I've searched most of the rest of the city. Went to the outpost in the Moor also with no luck.

Alternately....
# Dec 10 2001 at 2:13 PM Rating: Decent
Ok lemme start by saying this quest is damn annoying.....i suggest being about 25 skill in pottery to be safe. Getting the ingredients is a pain. The skeletons and worms are perma-hunted and even if you ask kindly people rarely give you the loc and the items rot. Now the part I am getting to. I took the tedious long procedure of percuring 16 Young Rockhopper Hides. I did the quest from Broker Fahaar to get myself 4 Leather Cords. I then proceeded to hand them in. In return I got the following message:

(Note the top part got cut off)

Broker Fahaar says, "<Missing text> tailors, do you? I assure you it is among the most difficult to master of any of the great Vah Shir disciplines, but one of the most rewarding as well. If you truly wish to learn how to manipulate fabrics and materials of all types you'll have to start with a basic task. Take this Vah Shir skinning knife and use it to cut a [belt strap]. Once you feel that you've mastered that task, bring me an example of your work and the Vah Shir skinning knife I gave you and we'll start you on some needle work.
You gain experience!!

You get a Vah Shir skinning knife (Magic,Lore,No Drop).

You say, " what belt strap"

Broker Fahaar says, ' Belt straps are cut from medium quality rockhopper hides. Just take the knife and cut out a strap out of a good section of the hide. The medium quality hides are nice and tough, but you have to search a bit to find a decent strip in the material. Good luck with it."

I am told medium quality rockhopper hides drop from rockhoppers in Shadeweaver. I havent been able to get one yet but I am assuming you combine the hide with the knife in a sewing kit then give the resulting belt + the Vah Shir skinning knife back to Broker Fahaar. And assuming the text is right it may take you a few trys to make the belt. So collect a few hides before you go back to town. Hopefully I can complete this quest and submit it or these clues will help someone else.
RE: Alternately....
# Dec 10 2001 at 3:41 PM Rating: Decent
The MQ Rockhopper hides do drop from rockhoppers but the big versions (Saurek Darkclaw, Saurek Deathmaw, and Saurek Shredder) drop them much, much more often. Strangely, HQ hides seem to be the most common of the hides.
