I noticed that Tymoz and the Coteries surrounding him are invis, b/c the first time I went to the loc I was on a CR. I didn't see him but I saw the guy in the other house appear then disappear really fast. I cast see invis on myself and noticed that I was surrounded by at least 4 coteries and Tymoz was at that loc. Maybe this is a known issue but I have wor n see invis so everytime I have been near coteries they have visible. There aren't any parentheses around their names either.

The helms can drop off practically any guard in Katta, usually about a 30% chance for one to drop from each guard you kill. Factions for killing the guards are -KattaCitizens, -ValidusCustodus, and minus to a named NPC that I can't remember; +Coterie, +NathynIlluminus, and + to about 5 SSeru factions. Turning in the helms will get you +Coterie and Nathyn, and - to Validus and one other. Getting higher than dubious to Coterie takes a very long time, but once above that, amiable takes no time. The SSeru factions, however, take much much longer to improve if you start KoS. Started out KoS in Katta, so not sure how long it takes to get KoS from killing the guards. Exp for the quest is negligible, and the reward isn't that great either, but some rogue friends of mine liked them for the fast delay and 10 higher range than regular throwing knives. Have yet to get the vial of vamp regen, but going to keep trying for it :-)

How good is this quest, and is it worth harming my Katta faction?

My level 47 Paladin has been soloing undead in the Katta graveyard. These undead have no faction. This is also a popular spot for soloing the Katta guards. Killing the guards ruins your Katta faction and prevents you from selling in Katta, so it’s very common to see higher level players leave guard corpses only partially looted. Because the pathing in this area is reliably predictable, guard killers and undead hunters can work together at close range without getting in each other’s way.

Nearly always, the higher level players killing the guards are happy to allow the people working the undead to loot the leftovers on the guard corpses, so it’s easy for a Paladin or other undead hunter to accumulate a good many of these helms. Some of the undead are already light-blue to me, so my plan is to hunt undead at the Katta graveyard until level 49, after which time I expect to have less need for Katta faction.

Is it worth the bank space to store these helms and do the quest? Is there some need for a Paladin to maintain Katta faction after level 49? Assuming that I decide to keep the helms and do the quest, do I need to raise my vampire faction before turning in the helms?

Thanks for any advice you have on these matters.

"My level 47 Paladin has been soloing undead in the Katta graveyard. These undead have no faction."

They don't give faction hits, but my faction has been going up with them from killing the guards: AFAIR I started dubious and I'm now up to warmly. Since I'm pretty sure they're not on a Seru faction, they'd have to be on either Coterie or Nathyn.

This is, IMHO, one of the most useless quests I've come across.

You have to kill LARGE numbers of the Katta guards to become dubious to the Coterie (you can turn in helms at dubious). By large numbers, I mean, I (a DE mage of Innoruuk) spent at least 2 levels almost exclusively in Katta killing guards, and only just got to dubious with the coterie. (Apparently gnomish necromancers are born dubious to coterie - the rest of us they hate.)

By the time you have killed enough guards to turn in the helms, you get absolutely no experience from the quest. I mean, after 100+ helms, my XP bar had not moved a hair (the guards were still blue to me, so it's not like I could have started killing them much younger).

You have to turn the helms in in Tenebrous Mountains where there are random bats and wolves who jump you, even while you are in Tymoz's shack.

If you are a class that can't see invisible, you're in trouble also, because the coterie vampires are invisible while they're standing still (which they normally are, unless they're attacking you).

You get a bunch of darts that are nothing at all special, and I couldn't even give them away. And even after turning in all those helms, my faction still hadn't gone up from dubious at all.

There is only one further quests I know of that require good coterie faction, the Coterie Mask of the Dead. https://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=7673
This gives you a mediocre mask with 5 charges of Feign Death, usable only by shadow knights and necromancers, who can feign death anyway.

I am completely baffled why they even bothered to make this quest...

Good question even though no one has answered it yet.

I am also a paladin and working on the Loyalist Shield of Honor quest. Now to start this quest you need at least indifferent faction with Katta.

It takes a long; long, long time to rebuild your faction with katta. I have a friend who is an Ogre Warrior that is just now barely getting his faction back up after killing the guards for xp. He has been coming out with me to vampyre castle and just slaughtering them.

The shield quest alone for us Paladins is well worth keeping Katta faction up. Sure there is more uber loot in upper planes; but as a questable shield it ranks in the top 10 of shields.

50 AC +15 str +15 wis +75 hp and is back wearable.....

I salute you young paladin for slaying the undead; don't turn your back on honor and justice now. There is bigger prey out there; namely the vampyres in the castle......:)

The guards just inside Katta from Tenebrous drop helms, which are no drop. Also randomly off of guards that wander around on the upper level of Katta. They are green/light blue to lvl 53. They give several bad faction hits to the different people of Katta, You get good faction with Nathyn, vampires and 2 Heart of Seru and another seru one as well.
The Katta guards in Twilight drop abolutely nothing. They give bad Katta hits and good faction for Citizens of Seru, Seru and Shoulders of Seru.
the faction is nice

I have been killing katta legionnares and centurions for a few days now, and it took me a full day to get from dubious to apprehensive. I went from dubious to apprehensive from turning in the helms, and then to indifferent also from turning in the helms. The higher the faction with coterie gets, the easier it seems to get, but thats my perception anyways.

What I'm wondering is how easy is it to raise the seru factions? There are several hits that you only get off certain mobs in katta, such as shoulders, heart, and citizens of seru, and unfortunately these mobs do not appear to be very common. (there also enchanters instead of warriors so they are a bit harder, heh)

How many helms to chance dubious?

I'm currently dubious and i'm sure I've turned in close to 80 helms without a faction improvement. Has anyone been able to get above dubious yet?

What were you killing to get the helms? Tymoz's instructions are kind of vague. I've killed several of the guards outside Katta with no helms. Should I be hunting somewhere else?

You have to kill guards inside katta. Seem to drop damaged helm in about 1 of 3. Valious armor about 1 in 40. Bracers and Belt is most common.

Tymoz is not located in Sanctus Seru, he is located in Tenebrous Mountains at location neg 680, neg 1500. There are 2 houses there, each containing a named NPC.

The reward can be semi random. I have recieved the darts but also a vial with 3 charges of vampyre regeneration. The vial seems much more rare after turning in over 150 helms.
