You say, 'Hail, Saumeem Unja'

Saumeem Unja says 'Hail Loramin, it is a pleasure to meet you. As the Governor of Defense for Katta Castellum it is my duty to ensure the safety of the city from outside enemies. At present the most imminent threat to the safety of our citizens is the Coterie of the Eternal Night and their [assassins]. There are other matters of defense as well however that you may be of [assistance] in dealing with.'

You say, 'What assassins?'

Saumeem Unja says 'The Coterie of the Eternal Night has trained several of their members to infiltrate the defenses of Katta Castellum and capture or kill citizens of our great city. Few of these assassins are successful at breaching the gate but the ones that do succeed tend to hide in shadowy corners waiting for an opportune moment to emerge and attack their victims. Should you discover one of these undead assassins slay it immediately. Kill four such assassins and deliver their Coterie Assassin Garrotes to me and you shall by honored by the Validus Custodus.'

Give him the garrotes and you get this:

Saumeem Unja says 'I require four of the Coterie Assassin Garottes in order to grant you the honor you strive for.'

Saumeem Unja says 'I see you have met with success _____! You have earned the respect of Validus Custodus. Please take this as a symbol of our gratitude and your bravery. You are ganing notoriety with the Coterie, be wary of the [Coterie Infiltrators].'

The signs of an infiltrator are often difficult to spot but should you identify an infiltrator within the city and slay it, bring me the creatures fangs, a Gem of Condensed Flame and your Reflective Claymore and I shall bestow upon you a greater reward.'

You need 2 vampyre infiltrator fangs, which drop from a vampyre named Sasha and a gem of condensed flame, which drops from the sun reverent king in the Scarlet Desert. Turn them in..

Saumeem Unja says 'I require the fangs of a vampyre infiltrator, a gem of condensed flame, and your reflective combine claymore in order to award you the honor you strive for.'

Saumeem Unja says 'Congratulations _____! You have done great deeds for the Validus Custodus and the safety of Katta Castellum. May it pass into good hands and may it continue to turn the undead to ash and dust.'

Been after assassins for a month now. I know the triangle area was the best spot, and that's where I got three garrotes so far, but the last spawn has been twenty days of checking at least twice a day to no avail.

So I started checking other places (magelo lists them around the bar and bank area), and I finally saw the telltale 30 second countdown rest period, just behind the bar on the north end. Scrambled around some more, saw another hit on the north side of the stairs to the cliff. No coterie spawned, but it had to be a trap to spawn them. Went back to the triangle area, nothing. Decided to run around to every dark corner and behind every building, nothing.

20 minutes more of running around, nothing, then tried the triangle one last time. Assassin spawned. Yay!

Anyway, garrotes turn-in:

Validus Custodus +10
Katta Castellum +1
Magus Conlegium +1
Nathyn Illuminious -1
Coterie of Eternal Night -1
Seru -1
Hand of Seru -5
Eye of Seru -1
Hand Legionnaires -1

Because I checked so often for so long, I'd kill Sasha Aliquin like three times already. Saumeem tells the player "The signs of an infiltrator are often difficult to spot", so I just sat in the bar and waited for her to spawn one time. She spawns outside, walks to the south side (left) bartender, makes an emote of buying a glass of red wine, walks outside and (here's the "sign of an infiltrator") pours the wine out, fills the cup with a red liquid and walks back in to a table near the cute Vah Shir lady and despawns. She has no faction hit because if she scowled it would be way too easy to spot her, so she's indifferent to all.

Giving the items for the Ashbringer netted the same faction hits as the garrotes.

Camping the Assassins
# Mar 17 2008 at 7:14 PM Rating: Decent
I camped the assassins and got 4 garrottes. It did take a while to collect them, so expect a long camp.

In the end, I don't really know how the assassins spawn, but here is what I know and can confirm.

1. I can confirm that the assassins spawn in the triangle area as stated in this post.
2. Other people say they spawn on the lower level behind the bank, but I never saw any there.
3. It took about 6 hours for an assassin to respawn in the triangle after I killed the first one.
4. I do believe that they are a triggered spawn so you have to be near the spawn point. Using "sense the undead" or track I don't think helps.
5. I don't know what the trigger/spawn points are, but I did a lot of running around the zone, running into dark corners, behind all the building, I even hailed Saumeem the quest NPC in the hope of spawning these mobs. I am not sure if this helped or not, I would like to believe it did.
6. I am not sure the assassin in the triangle will spawn if you just sit there and wait for it. I tried that for a while and nothing spawned.
7. Sasha the undead enchantress is on a 2 hour and 20 minute spawn timer. Sit on the steps of the bar at the lower level and wait for her to come down the stairs. She does walk into the bar and despawns VERY quickly. She probably spawns for less than a minute. Have magic resists up, and stun her has much as possible.

As I ran from the bank and up the ramp and then through the triangle once I got to the other side I checked my track and there I saw an assassin after camping there for about 8 hours or so. I remembered from a couple of sources that mentioned something about a 4 hour spawn timer and so I came back 4 hours later and no assassin.

Since I didn't see him on the way through the triangle I think he might have been triggered when I ran through but did not see any message appear on my screen. I really wish I knew the secret to getting these assassins to appear.

I and three guildies went to the revenant camp in SD to camp VT shards. The Knight of the Dread Sun was up when we got there, so I guess I got pretty lucky. Guess I'll do this quest now. Eventually I'll want that shield, so killing the big Vamp is a necessity.

Think I'm gonna start this quest. Couple questions if anyone is around reading this.

Someone mentioned the Assasin's are Undead and they invis upon spawning. I'm guessing 'sense undead' would still point me to them, even invised, although no one mentioned that above??

Are the Assasin's soloable to a 52 Paly?

It's a triggered spawn so you will have to pass near the spawn point when the trigger is ready. So far,of the 6 spots that were active on the release of SoL, only one appears to be non bugged and active. Sense the dead won't work, as there is nothing to sense till you trigger the spawn. Running by all the points so far has only produced assassins at the middle of the longest wall in the triangle area for me.

Only have to kill Sasha once
# Jul 19 2003 at 7:56 AM Rating: Decent
Just finished this quest last night and got my Ashbringer. Wasn't really sure if I was going to need 4 of Sasha's fangs or just 2, so I killed her twice (she drops two each time). Well, if I thought about it long enough, I would have thought that when you trade with an NPC, they only have 4 slots; and since you were turning in a gem and the claymore along with the fangs, you only had room for 2 fangs. I turned in the 2 fangs, gem, and claymore and got Ashbringer.

So, to sum up, you only need to kill Sasha once and get 2 fangs from her. Hope this helps.

I check here prior to turn in to see if I could determine if I was going to need two or four fangs. Thanks for posting...

It IS droppable... ie. is NOT NO DROP...

In fact rather than spending hours waiting to get jumped by vampyres and knights you can pick one up in the bazaar for about 4000pp (on E'ci at least). But then again.. where is the fun in that.

Is Ashbringer NO DROP? The picture on this site only shows it as MAGIC and LORE...as does the picture on magelo. My wizard has the Reflective Claymore (which most definately is NO DROP), as I did the garottes when I was trying to up my Katta faction. I also have the piece from the Dread Knight. Only thing I am missing is Sasha's teeth. I was thinking I would simply hand this sword over to my paladin...if the pictures are incorrect and the item is NO DROP, that would kill that idea...
Assassins not broken
# Jun 23 2003 at 4:26 AM Rating: Decent
I can confirm that Assassins are not broken. Like Kuriakos, I hailed Saumeem (located on the second floor of the trainer building near the graveyard)and came back 2 hours later. Less than fifteen minutes later the coterie assassin spawned and shortly after that, died at my feet.

Agreed. I got my Claymore just last week. What I did was more or less the same. I hailed the quest giver, parked my character just outside of the triangular area and logged off. Came back after 2 to 3 hours and sit inside in the triangular area. The assassin would usually popped within 10 mins. By the way, having see invis would be a big help.

After unsuccessfully waiting for a 13+ hour shift for one assassin to spawn, I began to assume the quest was broken. I /petitioned to see if I could learn anything from a Guide or GM and was rewarded with a few minor suggestions which have apparently borne fruit.

1) The spawn time on the coterie assassin is /random.
2) The spawn is triggered, as the quest text suggests
3) The quest is a huge timesink by design

Working a theory, I decided to see if Hailing Saumeem and staying out of the triangle would have an affect.

I now have 3 garrottes in 2 days of camping. (NON-continuously)
I got two in one day by simple attention to detail.

Here is my method for any who may wish to try it.
1) Hail Saumeem (best started just before the zone quiets down for the night or several hours before it picks up in the morning [my opinion])
2)Leave and go about your business somewhere for about 3½ hours
3) Walk past spawn spot(middle of the high wall in the triangle near graveyard staying a bit away from the wall
4) If no assassin pops instantly, get setup for a 2-4 hour camp. Sit just outside the triangle on either side and periodically walk past the spawn point (I check once per hour after the initital 3 hours or so)

The day when I got two the first came about 4 hours after hailing Saumeem, the second kill follwed in about 8 hours. The next day (today) I got one about 6ish(?) hours from the time I hailed Saumemm, then the server crashed so I have to start all over.

Questions? Comments?
There is no trigger for the assassins, only time...

The coterie assassins have an invisible, untargetable placeholder which despawns after some time (and it is neither 6 hours nor 2 hours), then either a coterie assassin or another placeholder will spawn. If you have a pet, /pet guard will show you where the placeholder is in the triangle area and when the placeholder despawns (the pet will then turn to face the nearest guard outside the triangle).

There is no trigger to make the assassin pop, it is a random pop from the placeholder. Once you have the spawn time, and duration determined from the pet method above, you can set a timer and then read a book, watch tv or walk away from the computer until the next spawn time. I would set the timer to 5 min before the spawn time to give me time to rebuff and med in the event that an assassin would pop.

If you kill an assassin, either a placeholder or another assassin will spawn in 26 min.

If the assassin is not killed in the same lifetime as the invisible placeholder, then it will despawn. Assassins are not always up on server up.

Expect this camp to take around 100 hours for four garottes. Expect another 100 hours for the gem from the knight of the dread sun. You only need 2 fangs from sasha, who is trivial compared to the timesinks of the garrotes and the gem.

He spawned for me outside the circular ruins. By a set of rocks closest to the red alien camp. He spawned by himself.

Sasha looks like a human woman dressed in leather. Her head has a gray pigmentation. Keep her **** feared at all times and she is cake.

This sword can be MQ'd by the way. Just verified this tonight.

ASSASSINS:
The best place for the assassins are, as mentioned before, the triangular area in Katta Castellum. They spawn from 5 to 6 hours apart. The pop visible and then cast invis. They are easy to solo 50+ and are undead.

If you are 55+ you can hunt the guards outside Nathyn Illuminious' place as it gives positive faction with everyone except Nathyn (*warning* if you plan on doing the Loyalist Shield make sure you do the part envolving him first). You even gain faction with Coteries!

If you are grouped or partnered and 45+ you can hunt the graveyard while you wait.

You need 4 garrotes and they ARE Multiquestable so ask if anyone else has any (just make sure you hand in last to get the sword).

It is advisable to check on the stairs/tavern for Sasha when ever you get the chance.

SASHA:

Sasha is undead and shows up on sense undead. She spawns on the slope, walks into the tavern and then depops. Since she spawns quite fast (roughly every couple of hours) she is probably the easiest to find of the spawns.

HOWEVER she is an enchanter and for the same reasons we love enchanters in our group you will hate her. She mesmerizes. Load at least three stun spells and root. Chain stun her and keep her rooted. If at any point she is free to move and mesmerizes you can only hope that it wears off before she walks in... orders a drink.. and despawns.

Depending on how many spells she gets off 55+ should not have a problem with her. You will probably need LoH.

SUN KNIGHT:
People complain about the assassins because they are a boring, but at least they are predictable. The Sun Knight is anything but predictable.

He spawns on top of the stairs within the ruins in Scarlet Desert. From other players and reading everything about this guy he is about 1 in 50+ chance of spawning (but once again its all luck). He is no more difficult than any of the other named that spawn. He randomly spawns at any of the named spots.

Almost all the spawns are an even fight for a players 56 or less. At about 58+ they become a lot easier.

Good Luck and for more info:

Quest complete, heres a pic

http://image1ex.villagephotos.com/pubimage.asp?id_=1503918

The Assassins all popped early in the morning US time. I tried Sasha solo as a 57 Paly and she took me down to a bub of health after LoH while she was at 45%. Zoned and she despawned. She has alot of HP for her level. Dropped her on second try next night with aid of a 56 Mag. Sasha mezzed me once and promptly walked into the Bar. Good thing my Mag friend's pet pulled her back out and kept her from despawning. If you keep fearing her and have no snare, Sasha will run up the cliff ramp to giant hall upstairs where folks do the Rallic Pack quest. Sucks fighting her up the ramp so we skipped the chain fearing. Root, stun (Cease & Desist) and Paly nuke (Expel Undead)worked best and usually landed full force. Mag nuked and used pet. Long camp but worth it imho. Flame Shock = 110 non-melee damage on all Undead. With a HoS and Boon of Garou on (to boost Str and Dex), this should be an interesting weapon in Plane of Nightmares on the Banshees =)

Found that Saumeem also gives info about Kellari Autumnfall. She is on the 3rd floor of the Enc/Wiz/Mag bldg (click on the tapestries to TP up). She is the start of an unrelated quest with the gathering of Skins from the undead in the Grave Yard.

The assassins were weird. I got all four over the course of a week. The first popped after 2 hours or so. I was sitting in that little triangular walled in area. The second one also popped there but while I was running around in that area. He popped up against the wall. I went 2 nights without getting a pop (about 4 to 5.5 hours each night). The fifth night was friday. I logged in and the Assassin practically fell into my lap. I smacked him out and sat down. It took 6.5 hours for him to re-pop.

Sasha was easy. I don't know if this had any bearing but the first time I sat down for almost 3 hours waiting. Nothing. The next time I actually went to the quest giver and asked about the coterie infiltrators. 2.5 hours later (almost exactly) she popped. So all I have left is the Gem of Condensed flame. So far I've had no luck although I have seen the Burning Priest a couple of times.

When I do the turn in I plan on using only 2 fangs. I'll have an additional 2 just in case but I honestly can't see you needing them. The quest giver does not ask for 4. He just asks for fangs. That seems to me to suggest 2 since 2 fangs plus the Claymore plus the Gem takes up all four slots in the trade window. We'll see how it goes. Maybe we can settle that debate once and for all.
Woot
# Dec 10 2002 at 4:12 AM Rating: Decent
Woot I finnaly got the Ashbringer the assasins are a pain if your a pally and do them by yourself fear undead is a must the 200 life tap will mess anyone up. Sasha make sure you have friends with perfurably ones with pets she like to mezz and mezz often and once she mezzes you she forgets about you goes to the bar and despawns. which is a pain on a 2 hour 15 min spawn and yes I timed it from the first kill till the next time I seen her. Lastly the Knight of the dread sun I think I got lucky and had it pop after 8 hours of camping the ruins I talked to people that reagulary camp it and they said they didn't know what I was talking about which is frustrating when trying to convice people to stay and help with the camp luclky the ruins is next to the camp where the burning priest spawns so you can bribe druids and shams into helping you by also camping the burning preist at the same time. P.S. the assassins if I hadn't mentioned this before were a pain they are a triggered spawn where you have to be in a certain place at a certain time for them to spawn and it is close to five hours between times and there is only about a half an hour window when they can be spawned

What i know about the quest.
# Nov 15 2002 at 10:07 AM Rating: Excellent
The assassins suck. I know that much for sure. I went around to the 3 spots people have posted on, and only saw them in one spot. At loc 276, -1502. Triangle type area best way to describe. Straight camping that spot got me two assassins in about 5 hours. Got one the day before, so im still waiting for one more. 57 Paladin has no problem there. I spent some time in the graveyard just to pass the time away. Once and a while when using sense the dead a coterie servant would be up. He was always in the locked door in Nathyn's mansion. Dropped some 3ac padded shoes once. THe other time he dropped:

Soles of Night
feet
Ac 6
Skill Mod : Sneak +3 %
Dex +3 Agi +3

class: rogue

Saysha for the fangs is at least a timeable spawn. Im not one for great details...but was right around 2hours and 30 minutes for me. There was no way i was taking her down by myself tho. I had my roomate help me with his 61 cleric tho. She spawns near the stairs by the bank. Loc approx: -250, -1250. Than she walks into the bar. Note: Make sure you engage her early...and really recommend help.

The first time she spawned my cleric friend had just got into the zone. I told him hurry she is up. I started to melee her while she was in the bar. No one tried to help her. Next thing i know she mezzes me. No sweat i think. She'll just blast me and the mez will break, and my cleric friend will be here soon. Nope. SHe mezzed me. Than she walked up to the bar. Next thing i see is some text. Its not word for word but went something like:

Saysha flips a few coins onto the bar and buys a bottle of red wine.

Saysha empties a portion of the bottle on the ground and fills it up with a red liquid from a wine skin that she pulled from her tunic.

Next thing i know she depops. So first fight i hit her 3 times for about 210 points...than that was it. Other times was no sweat. Stun stun stun, and have someone with you in case you get mezzed. She regens super fast too, and had more hp's than we thought she would. She is undead as well.

Hope that helps a little. Still waiting on the last assassin..than i'll be off to the scarlet desert...and most likely another miserable camp looking for the guy there. Will post my adventure on that if anything interesting happens.

Well i finished the quest for the claymore Zurg. The sword does indeed look pretty cool. Its pretty large in my half elfs hands. =) Started camping the knight in scarlet desert, and exp pretty decent at 57 still...everything there is still dark blue to me. Like to edit the spoiler if i could. It says you need 4 teeth from sasha..i feel that is wrong. The guy says to bring her fangs to him, the gem , and your claymore. She drops 2 fangs everytime. So one killing of her is fine.

The reason Zurg had such trouble with the assassin, i'd like to point out, is the assassin melee isnt too horribly bad, but he procs a 200 point lifetap which it troublesome.

Right when i got the sword, i used sense the dead and the coterie servant was up, decided to test the sword. With 172 str, i was hitting in the low 100's a few times, the flash of light proced 4 times during the fight, resisted twice. Its a fun sword tho, i dueled a guildie with it just so i could blind him a few times hehe.

Finally got my sword too. Best time to spawn assassins seems to be early in the morning when no one else is on. My theory is that if certain period of time with no one passing through the triangle the assassins will pop whenever the next person enters. So since the zone gets pretty empty at night the assassins are ready to spawn first thing in the morning.

Cool looking sword - large velious looking with runes running down the center of it (though you have to look close to see them).

Let me know if your theory about only needed two fangs from Sasha is true.

And if you get Ashbringer - let me know what that looks like!

Grats Derbine on embarking on this quest. I too am in the midst of it but at a lot lower level - 46. I'm doing this quest as I am exp grinding in the graveyard (good from 44 to 48).

I also have found the assassin only in the triangle area. And it doesn't seem to be a timeable spawn. I killed one at level 45 with some assistance from a high level rogue. The second one I soloed myself last night - it was the MOST intense fight I have ever had in EQ. I survived with 45 hp left, about 2% of my mana left, and no vigor left. So I say 46 is around the minimum level you can solo these bad boys. Just keep spooking it and beating on it. And spook every ten seconds because if it wears off and turns around you are toast. The guards will NOT assist you.

Pre 49 if you are going to solo a ghoulbane and Rodcet Nife proc is a MUST. Also at these levels you WILL use lay hands - so don't fight without it available.

The two other times I fought Assassins I have had to flee when my spook the dead spells didn't stick. Luckily they don't pursue you too far so you don't have to zone (however they do then despawn).

I got two of Sasha's teeth so far. Just ask the level 60+ killing guards by the bank to drop her if they see her. Then I plan on doing the gem camp in the lower 50's with my guild so I can get exp while camping. Doing this quest while getting exp is the only bearable way to do it!

Derbine - if you get the sword first let us know what it looks like. I heard that the graphic is cool.

Good Luck!
