After completing the "Series C Black Boxes" quest, you received a Daily Log ("Log Sheet of Clockwork 27c1"). Take this to Drekon Vebnebber (General Supplies) in Ak'Anon at location +875, -475 (he's on Find).

You say, 'Hail, Drekon Vebnebber'

Drekon Vebnebber says 'Hello, _____. It is grand to make your acquaintance. I am the in-house merchant-slash-file clerk. I have goods to offer and I handle all the Gemchopper paperwork. Thrilling, don't you think?'

Hand in the Daily Log.

Drekon Vebnebber says 'Why, thank you. Hey!! This log indicates some messy business is going on at the scrapyard. Something happened to a group of gnomes. They never came out!! Go check out the scrapyard! I believe the rumors of [Red 5] are true.'

Your faction standing with Gem Choppers has been adjusted by 5.
Your faction standing with Merchants of AkAnon has been adjusted by 1.
Your faction standing with King AkAnon has been adjusted by 1.
Your faction standing with Dark Reflection has been adjusted by -1.
Your faction standing with Clan Grikbar has been adjusted by -1.
You gain experience!!

You say, 'Who is Red 5?'

Drekon Vebnebber says 'Red 5 is rumored to be a haywire clockwork. They say he pieced himself back together and lives in the scrapyard. If he IS there, you must hunt him down and take his blackbox to Manik Compolten. Be careful, if Red 5 rebuilt himself, he may have rebuilt minions as well.'

From here, you need to obtain Red V's blackbox and give it to Manik. Red V is usually about level 4-6 and spawns in the southeastern-most room of the Mines of Malfunction (around location 2025, -625). The corridors leading to and the room in which Red 5 spawns are short, so only small and medium sized people can actually fight or cast in there, since you have to be standing to cast or attack.

The spawn point for Red 5 alternates between "obsolete model" and "Red 5". "Red 5" is the one who drops the item you need. Note that it runs when low in health and is KOS to guards in the area, so you could get KOS'd.

Red V says 'Click... Inferior being. Red 5 shall exterminate.'

You have slain Red V!
Red V's corpse says 'Unit will cease to function. All remaining parts of Red 5 blackbox live on. Red 5 blackbox incomplete.'
Your faction standing with Defective Clockwork has been adjusted by -50.

Loot the Incomplete Blackbox from its corpse.

In order to fix this blackbox, you have to put four blackbox fragments inside it and hit 'combine'. Blackbox fragments drop from the obsolete models that also inhabit the mines.

obsolete model says 'Click... Inferior being. Red 5 shall exterminate.'

You have slain obsolete model!
obsolete model's corpse says 'This unit is disabled. Red 5 fragment forfeited.'
Your faction standing with Defective Clockwork has been adjusted by -1.

Combine 4 Blackbox Fragment in the Incomplete Blackbox to produce a Rusted Blackbox. Hand this item in to Manik Compolten (Warrior Guildmaster).

Note that this quest lowers faction with the Dark Reflection, who happen to be the NPCs in the Mines. The item received is often a piece of low level armor, but sometimes you'll get a potion or a Bull Smasher or Iony's Absorber.

Upon turn-in:

Manik Compolten says 'This is fabulous news!! You have done well, young one. Once you are ready for [further instruction] please let me know, I will guide you through your early most dangerous days. When you have become more experienced in our art, I wil be able to further instruct you on how to progress through your early ranks, as well as in some various [trades] you will have available to you.'

Your faction standing with Gem Choppers has been adjusted by 10.
Your faction standing with Merchants of Ak`Anon has been adjusted by 2.
Your faction standing with King AkAnon has been adjusted by 2.
Your faction standing with Dark Reflection has been adjusted by -2.
Your faction standing with Clan Grikbar has been adjusted by -1.
You gain experience!!

You say, 'what Bull Smasher'

Manik Compolten says 'The war hammer, Bull Smasher was crafted by our great blacksmiths and tinkers. It is not magical, but it is weighted to perform for only the short of stature. Certainly an item like Bull Smasher could only be crafted by gnomes.'

You say, 'Who is Meldrath'

Manik Compolten says 'Meldrath is the mad gnome. He used to be a member of the Eldritch Collective. Some say he lost his mind while he was working on a formula he obtained from other worlds. He used to lead the cult called the Asylum of the Mad.'

You say, 'what Asylum of the Mad'

Manik Compolten says 'The Asylum of the Mad was formed by the mad gnome, Meldrath. Under his direction, they were trying to build some giant mechanical titan. We recently sent all of our clockworks into the Steamfont Mountains to destroy their evil cult.'

You say, 'what clockworks'

Manik Compolten says 'The clockworks were developed by the Eldritch Collective. They are used as our policing force in Ak'Anon. They come in many series. The letter following their number is the series model.'

Manik has a bit of quest dialogue that mentions the Bull Smasher reward.

You say, 'what about Red 5'

Manik Compolten says 'Red 5 is the infernal clockwork once owned by the mad gnome, Meldrath. I hear he has survived the scrap heap and is active once more. I offer a reward to all gnome warriors for the return of Red 5's Blackbox. Perhaps even the reward of a [Bull Smasher].'

They still exsist. I got mine tonight. 4 levels and 3 days after I started. Took 47 turn ins, 2 absorbers and about 10 rusty warhammers causing mild heartattacks =/

That's right, sometimes you don't get a bullsmasher or Ionny's Absorber. You get small tattered gloves (+ 16 silver and 3 gold and a bit of exp). An anonymous post above listed:

1. Small Round Shield
2. Rusty Shortened Spear
3. Small Patchwork Cloak
4. Small Tattered Wristband
5. Small Patchwork Shoulderpads
6. Small Tattered Wristband
7. Small Patchwork Cloak
8. Small Patchwork Tunic
9. Bullsmasher.

I thought he meant in addition to, but no, you get a single item. I'v repeated this quest 4 times. So there's a 50-50 chance you won't get the red v quest then there's an even smaller chance of getting the bull smasher.
Red V spawn
# Jul 12 2007 at 1:15 AM Rating: Decent
I'm currently camping for some blackbox fragments (kinda-sorta KoS with Miner Gnomes) in the rectangular room just to the right of Rilgor, Velena and Vaenor.

Red V and obsolete model spawn at 2016.67, -628.95, -180.81

Red V spawned four times just inside twenty-five minutes; each time with a box, only once without a fragment,...so far

I'm just glad that these gnomes don't wander the mine.

Last night was my first time back in the mines of malfunction in quite some time (before gnomes could be SKs). I decided I would quest the bullsmasher and start practicing my 1hb since I have used 1hs and 2hs almost exclusively up to this point.

Anyway, waiting for Red V isn't the hard part of the quest anymore. Verant has done a wonderful job of nerfing almost every obsolete model spawn in the mines. I spent more time running around trying to find blackbox fragments than i did anything else. I had to let red v's box rot a couple times because I had yet to find the fragments to combine and pick up a new box. They even got rid of the runaway clockworks in Steamfont! What's the deal? A good reward for this quest was rare enough, now they gotta make it take an hour to complete it once? Something is wrong here...

The following are some observations that I have noticed about the spawn rate of obsoletes:

+ When you kill an obsolete model, a spider, or any other non-skelleton mob there is a chance that a skeleton will spawn in its place. After a while, you will have lots of skeletons and not much else. I came here after a patch and there were only a few skellies. After a few minutes of killing obsoletes, almost all mobs in the area were skellies.

+Attacking the skellies will get you dead real fast as every level 60+ npc in the area will jump on you.

+ The NPC's in the area will buff the skellies with very high-level buffs. It is completely unreasonbly to expect any lowbie to kill skellies when they have haste, Aego, Rune V, and uber damage shields. In essense, these level 1 skeletons have over 1500hp and a damage shield that nukes you for 25+ everytime you touch them. And if that wasn't enough, other NPC's will heal them THROUGH WALLS. Oh, and did I forget to mention that the NPC's will jump you if they catch you attacking them? Well, if they do, expect to be raped like a level 5 ranger in WW whose invis just dropped.

So far 14 pieces of junk and one Iony's Absorber.

/finger Verant

Well, I did it today, gnome paladin, started off dubious. Took me 11 trieds for the Bull Smasher, And I was dubious the whole time, and still am (at least until I do the deep muses BP and greaves...). So you should be pretty safe if you're apprehensive.

I did go from indifferent to scowling with the rogue clockworks though, of course.

Done this quest too many times to count with various characters... gotten the Bullsmasher 3 times and the absorber once. Once I got the smasher on the first box I turned in, another time it took over 13 tries -- faction does not matter (my dwarf and halfling both succeeded before my gnome did).

Blackbox fragments drop from the obsoletes that hang out at several points in the mines, but Red V spawns in only one point. Sometimes he will move to the opposite end of the hall where he spawns, or wander to the alcove across from the gnome casters -- but he doesn't stay for long.

If you knock him down and he starts running, be careful and don't chase him toward the mine entrance -- the clockwork will kill him there and you will have to wait for the next spawn. When he runs away, he will come back after he has healed a bit, so just be patient (you can chase him if you are confident you can hit him while he is running).

There have also been times when I have had the unfinished box and did not have any fragments, and Red V spawned again in quick succession. Unfinished box is lore, so I had to let it rot while I looked for more fragments. Always helps to have extra, even though they do not stack. Runaway clockworks in Steamfront also drop the blackbox fragments for this quest, if that helps.

Be patient, kill spiders, and snakes while waiting (or work on your sense heading), and you will be rewarded... eventually.

Okay this quest can turn out to be Fairly Long, or short. Tha quest can be done if you have a high enough faction with the Gemchoppers and you do not need to complete the first blackbox quest, When you arrive in the Mines where the Evil Trainers are you walk all the way back to the wizard guild and then where the trainer Veanor Husga stands there is an Adjacent room next to him where Red V spawns. Red V usually takes a short period of time to spawn, but there can be 1 problem...Other creatures spawn in his place then walk around and need to be killed before Red V can spawn again, so you must run around the whole place killing Rock Spiders, Rock Snakes and all Obsolete Models...But DO NOT kill the skeletons, you will be attacked by all the Evil Trainers! After you get four Black Box Components you kill Red V and you combine them in his Black box Red V drops, Once you combine them you go out going toward the Priest of Discord, but before you get to him there is a Warrior Guild Where You Must give Manik Compolton the Box! You may recieve the Bullsmasher or armor, but just keep doing it and eventually you will recieve the Bullsmasher...Good Luck

Well, it took me 5 nights, but I finally got this damn thing. I turned in about 40 or so blackboxes (Oh, the pain...). The speed of this weapon does make it worth it in the end. I have Hammer of Wrath spell for magic onlies and undead, and I'll be using this for everything else for quite a while. Some stuff to know:

I don't think faction plays any part in the reward. It's just that there are so many items (about 20 or so) that you can be given.

I am a dwarf brell cleric and was indiff to the necros at the start. I assume other clerics would be too.

Red V does not wander far from his spawn point, usually just to the other end of the hall, when he moves at all. Ditto for the obsoletes that spawn in his place.

When you grab him, drag him to the other end of the hall! He will have to walk that much further to leave the mines. Once I started doing that, I never lost him to the guards again even without root.

Good luck in your hunting.

Got the Bull Smasher today. I know this is going to upset alot of people, but I got it on the first try. Red V was blue to my lvl 5 Gnome warrior. Got the box, filled it and went to see Manik. Since he is my guild leader, this could have helped immensely. Just thought I would share that if you kill all the obseletes that spawn in both rooms on that end of the hall, he will spawn relatively quickly.
