After completing the "Series C Black Boxes" quest, you received a Daily Log ("Log Sheet of Clockwork 27c1"). Take this to Drekon Vebnebber (General Supplies) in Ak'Anon at location +875, -475 (he's on Find).

You say, 'Hail, Drekon Vebnebber'

Drekon Vebnebber says 'Hello, _____. It is grand to make your acquaintance. I am the in-house merchant-slash-file clerk. I have goods to offer and I handle all the Gemchopper paperwork. Thrilling, don't you think?'

Hand in the Daily Log.

Drekon Vebnebber says 'Why, thank you. Hey!! This log indicates some messy business is going on at the scrapyard. Something happened to a group of gnomes. They never came out!! Go check out the scrapyard! I believe the rumors of [Red 5] are true.'

Your faction standing with Gem Choppers has been adjusted by 5.
Your faction standing with Merchants of AkAnon has been adjusted by 1.
Your faction standing with King AkAnon has been adjusted by 1.
Your faction standing with Dark Reflection has been adjusted by -1.
Your faction standing with Clan Grikbar has been adjusted by -1.
You gain experience!!

You say, 'Who is Red 5?'

Drekon Vebnebber says 'Red 5 is rumored to be a haywire clockwork. They say he pieced himself back together and lives in the scrapyard. If he IS there, you must hunt him down and take his blackbox to Manik Compolten. Be careful, if Red 5 rebuilt himself, he may have rebuilt minions as well.'

From here, you need to obtain Red V's blackbox and give it to Manik. Red V is usually about level 4-6 and spawns in the southeastern-most room of the Mines of Malfunction (around location 2025, -625). The corridors leading to and the room in which Red 5 spawns are short, so only small and medium sized people can actually fight or cast in there, since you have to be standing to cast or attack.

The spawn point for Red 5 alternates between "obsolete model" and "Red 5". "Red 5" is the one who drops the item you need. Note that it runs when low in health and is KOS to guards in the area, so you could get KOS'd.

Red V says 'Click... Inferior being. Red 5 shall exterminate.'

You have slain Red V!
Red V's corpse says 'Unit will cease to function. All remaining parts of Red 5 blackbox live on. Red 5 blackbox incomplete.'
Your faction standing with Defective Clockwork has been adjusted by -50.

Loot the Incomplete Blackbox from its corpse.

In order to fix this blackbox, you have to put four blackbox fragments inside it and hit 'combine'. Blackbox fragments drop from the obsolete models that also inhabit the mines.

obsolete model says 'Click... Inferior being. Red 5 shall exterminate.'

You have slain obsolete model!
obsolete model's corpse says 'This unit is disabled. Red 5 fragment forfeited.'
Your faction standing with Defective Clockwork has been adjusted by -1.

Combine 4 Blackbox Fragment in the Incomplete Blackbox to produce a Rusted Blackbox. Hand this item in to Manik Compolten (Warrior Guildmaster).

Note that this quest lowers faction with the Dark Reflection, who happen to be the NPCs in the Mines. The item received is often a piece of low level armor, but sometimes you'll get a potion or a Bull Smasher or Iony's Absorber.

Upon turn-in:

Manik Compolten says 'This is fabulous news!! You have done well, young one. Once you are ready for [further instruction] please let me know, I will guide you through your early most dangerous days. When you have become more experienced in our art, I wil be able to further instruct you on how to progress through your early ranks, as well as in some various [trades] you will have available to you.'

Your faction standing with Gem Choppers has been adjusted by 10.
Your faction standing with Merchants of Ak`Anon has been adjusted by 2.
Your faction standing with King AkAnon has been adjusted by 2.
Your faction standing with Dark Reflection has been adjusted by -2.
Your faction standing with Clan Grikbar has been adjusted by -1.
You gain experience!!

You say, 'what Bull Smasher'

Manik Compolten says 'The war hammer, Bull Smasher was crafted by our great blacksmiths and tinkers. It is not magical, but it is weighted to perform for only the short of stature. Certainly an item like Bull Smasher could only be crafted by gnomes.'

You say, 'Who is Meldrath'

Manik Compolten says 'Meldrath is the mad gnome. He used to be a member of the Eldritch Collective. Some say he lost his mind while he was working on a formula he obtained from other worlds. He used to lead the cult called the Asylum of the Mad.'

You say, 'what Asylum of the Mad'

Manik Compolten says 'The Asylum of the Mad was formed by the mad gnome, Meldrath. Under his direction, they were trying to build some giant mechanical titan. We recently sent all of our clockworks into the Steamfont Mountains to destroy their evil cult.'

You say, 'what clockworks'

Manik Compolten says 'The clockworks were developed by the Eldritch Collective. They are used as our policing force in Ak'Anon. They come in many series. The letter following their number is the series model.'

bullsmasher first try

Did this quest to build faction for my wood elf bard so she could do the quest for the Bootstrutters frame pack (apprehensive to Manik will allow this quest but not the other). Got the Bullsmasher on the first try, and gave it to my dwarf cleric (dwarf warrior of mine also came down and got it on his fourth try -- faction has nothing to do with it). Seems to be given as a reward more frequently these days, but my characters may just be lucky.

Still don't have good faction for the pack, and I am sick of hanging out in the mines. Back to collecting scrap metal I guess...

Weapon is great for skilling up in 1HB with its low delay, and stats are a bonus. Best weapon in game for non-twink newbies... too bad about the class/race limitations. Wish Verant would put a couple more of these in there so poor characters could get something decent before level 20.

Not broken, this still works. Did it with my lvl 5 Dwarf cleric and only took me 7 tries. Awesome weapon for any non-twinks such as my selff :)

This guy says that the Gem Miners wont allow him to collect blackbox bits anymore, not sure if that means gms took it out or not but i want that item! ALSO do not ATTACK THE DECAYING GNOME SKELETONS!!!! The wizards there give them a ub3r fire shield that murders you in 4 hits *killed me and my level 8 pet!* Do not attack those, for they are dangerous! As the shield does 20 dmg a hit and hits 5 times in 10 seconds.

Bullsmasher

In light of this bullsmasher I decided to do the quest with my Level 8 Warrior Gnome. I proceded to M.o.M. to find many obsoletes. Everywhere I looked there was one. I killed about 8 of them when I look over and there is Red V. I proceed to kill Red V (quite easily solo for some reason) got the box had plenty of fragments. Went to turn the blackbox to Manik not expecting anything since this was my first try I received the bullsmasher. Imagine my amazement after viewing all the thread's here. I am on the Drinal Server. Doubt that means anything but works just fine for me.

In trying to complete the first part of this quest, I'm going crazy trying to find the C series clockworks. I have found three so far; 1 on an island in a lake, 1 in King Ak'Anons place, and 1 in a hallway... where oh where is the fourth clockwork? Any help would appreciated.

That one has 2 spots it pops. One is below the falls, up on a ledge opposite Sanfyrd(or whatever the scrap metal dude name is), and usually if there isnt a c model there, run back toward sf zone, the first stone thing you run under(coming from sf) has doors, go in and on top of that battlement is the other spot for that c model.

Obsoletes?
# Jul 09 2001 at 12:10 AM Rating: Default
OK, VERY stupid question, but for me the problem is not getting RedV, but finding obsolete's to kill. The only place I seem to find them are in the Red V spawn.

Am I missing something? I've spent like an hour and a half to get the box (no problem) and two pieces (the problem.)

Any help would be appreciated...

I've been doing this quest (so far 32 times, no bullsmasher, but I did get the absorber on try 29 or something), and sometimes I have problems with the fragments too -- especially when Red V decides to spawn five times in a row.

I've gotten to know the mines pretty well, so that I never get lost running around them anymore. Besides the Red V/obsolete spawn, there seems to be 4 other spawns, with spawn points in certain areas, but they shift around a bit over time (maybe it depends on where the last one died? I haven't figured it out). Get to know the mines and you'll be able to find them. Two are near the Red V spawn.
These spawns can be rock snakes, rock spiders, rat-shaped obsolete models, gnome-shaped obsolete models, or spider-shaped obsolete models. The gnome and spider obsoletes are what you want (they always drop the fragment, and the rats never do), but you've gotta kill the other things to get them out of the way. So basically, kill everything. :) [Otherwise, you'll end up waiting for them to despawn and respawn, much less effective.] Sometimes I'll get a couple backpacks full of fragments and no Red V, and other times I'll be out of them and running around trying to get them before another Red V spawns.

No bullsmasher yet, but I've made 14 plat between selling the quest rewards (I can't wear the armor), and spiderling silks. Not shabby for level 7; I'll actually be able to afford my level 8 spells!

Thanks for the post. Actually I figured out the act that the rock snakes and rock spiders took up obsolete spawns by accident. I was SOOOO bored I decided to see if I could work on tailoring with the spider silks. Pretty soon the obsoletes were spawinging like mad, so I made the connection (and had 16 fragments and no box... ;-) )

As a total side note, I got the bullsmasher (around try 11-12) and whether it was coincendence or not, the faction on Manik switched from Indifferent to Amiable on the one that gave me the bullsmasher. It certainly could be coincidence, but just wanted to post it.

Hehe, I went there this afternoon, to continue trying (I'm up to try #35 now, I was hoping I'd be luckier =P), and woah man, the patch changed something. Now there's like 10 spawns instead of 4. I don't know if this was a change or a bug fix (I'm guessing a bug fix, as the current number of spawns make a lot more sense as far as leveling from 1-4 there.. when I was level 1-4, I couldn't find much, despite hearing it was a good place to spend those levels).. so now it's not such a pain to get fragments now.

I might give up after 40 or 50.. I don't know if Manik was indiff or amiable to me when I began, but he's been amiable to me for a long time... Dark Reflection remains indifferent.
finally... there is hope

Tried fifteen times to get the Bullsmasher with my gnome cleric (R.I.P.) to no avail. On one occasion my body (and everything on it) was swallowed by a wall after Red V killed me, so I essentially had to start over at lvl 6. Camped the sucker for days, and after all that had a handfull of patchwork and some rusty weapons (did get Iony's abosorber on second try though).

Took my dwarf warrior down there determined not to make the same mistakes... did not camp Red V, but simply went in there every now and then to see if he spawned (alway have a healthy supply of box fragments in bank just in case). Was actually camping for Sanfyrd across the river so I could turn in scrap (he seems to have disappeared on M. Marr server). Fourth try, Bullsmasher. Now I have to work on 1HB. Totally random whether you get it or not.

curious... should I or should I not go there and waste about 2 levels worth of time to get a 800pp weapon to go w/ my wraithbone hammer, hehe just dinged at 13 and need a second weapon, DUEL WEILD BABY!! would 8/26 (wraithbone) and 6/20 (bullsmasher) be good for me? certainly coulds good, two weapons w/ about 3 dmg/dly ratio sound mighty good for me... would this be a good combo? Thanks in advance

32 Tries
# Jun 12 2001 at 4:59 PM Rating: Default
Took me 32 tries to get the bullsmasher, which I got this morning. There were 2 or 3 other guys working the same quest and for the past few days we've been switching off in the mines. I think the average number of tries needed is around 25-30... be prepared to spend a lot of repetitious time, but man it's sweet when you finally get it.

Some notes:

The items given for the quest are often patchwork armor, sometimes small shields or rusty weapons. For a low level non-twink, the patchwork is nice bonus.

Iony's absorber seems to drop on average about every 10 tries or so, and is also a nice item.

Someone was confused about Red 5's location. In the above description it says the farthest South-Eastern room, but 2 rooms fit this description... so let me say that it is the one which is farther east than south. He spawns on the southern end of the room to the right of the lava lamp, and it's roughly 6 minutes between spawns. So after I killed the spawn there I would run around the mines trying to find obsolete models to get frags from and return in 6 minutes. This may just be my imagination, but Red 5 seemed to spawn almost every other spawn in the morning or afternoon in real time (I'm eastern US), but at night he was a much rarer spawn (about every 4 to 6 spawns).

You don't have to do the previous quests in order to do the Red 5 quest, you can just start handing in boxes to Manik.

One last note for people unfamiliar with gnome territory: don't attack the skeletons in the mines as you will get cremated by NPCs there.
Question...
# Jun 08 2001 at 11:08 PM Rating: Default
Would a level 9 High Elf Cleric be KoS in the mines? I am assuming I will be, but I don't know. Also, does anyone know about the NPC's in SF that kill Tunare followers? Thanx in advanc.
ITs worth it

This quest does take too many times to get the Bullsmasher. It is kind of a waste but eventually youll get it and even if you dont want it its worth 800pp. Great newbie quest or someone who is seeking for money.

# Dec 11 2000 at 4:44 PM Rating: Default
I did this quest with my 10th dwarven cleric (yeah a little to high) on Torvonoliss and got the BullSmasher with the first try! The hardest thing was finding Red V, I had enough broken bits to complete the quest two more times if it didnt work the first time. The hammer is really great and incredibly fast.
35 and counting
# Dec 04 2000 at 9:32 PM Rating: Default
I starting to doubt whether this quest is really worth the effort. I'm a lvl 9 dwarven cleric on Drinal and I've done this quest 35 times..still no Bullsmasher. I average about 2 boxes per hour..do the math. And to add insult to injury the XP at this level is negligible. But having the root spell (level 9 cleric spell) is a definite advantage.
bullsmasher!

this is probably the best weapon i have ever seen that is easy to get. You will probably use this weapon till your 30's or 40's. at least i did. The only problem with it is that it is not magical otherwise it would be one of the best weapons. and it is useable by small races only
Insanity; pure insanity!
# Aug 03 2000 at 10:41 PM Rating: Decent
Recently obtained; recently sanity returned! Man is this quest a PAIN! I got mine after try number 15, was about to give up on it when I say to yself, what the heck, one more night camping, then I can go back to what I should be doing at my level...punishing undead in Unrest! =) What?! A level 18 paladin in a newbie area camping an ivy green MOB, hehehe....at least I have the hammer now, and my nerves can settle down now...too bad this hammer isn't magical, otherwise it'd be camped year round, and cost about 3 times what's worth...and I know it cost a pretty penny to BUY one, it costs me my sanity (and others as well, I'm sure).

why does the weapon say that rangers and shadowknights can use the weapon, when none of the races allowed have it as an available class??? just my 2cp worth...

The programmers at Verant are lazy. I say that becasue i've read at sites that they left it in because its easier programming or something, I really don't understand why, but thats what i've heard.
RE: what the?

actually I think its so that we can have desucions about it. Think about all the screws up that Verant does that hit the net and make us even more interested in the game. Just my 2cp also.

If you get bored in the mines dont start to play with the decaying gnome skels. I wasnt paying attention to the many npcs buffing them. And well got a smack down from a couple lvl 1 skels. Oh and I seem to be only getting patchwork armor for this so far.

Great weapon. A hammer I still use at level 41 as a Warrior. You have to realize that between the stats and the dmg/delay ratio, this is better than a lot of weapons out there. Also, it allows me to look a little unique. Not a whole lot of warriors using hammers. Also, I got it in my first try, so I was really happy.
