Note: Unless you're an enchanter with the benefit of faction spells and illusions, this quest may be a bit time consuming.

Clurg, the Ogre bartender in Ogguk, has lost his bartender's compendium and wants it back badly. It is currently held by Bartender Gregor, in the Seafarer's Roost in East Freeport. Fortunately, Gregor has a lust for exotic drinks, and lacks only the ingredients to make his dream concoctions. He will give you the compendium for those ingredients.

You say, 'Hail, Gregor Nasin'

Gregor Nasin says, 'Sit down and name your poison! I know we are lacking in originality, but I intend to create some [exotic drinks].'

You say, 'What exotic drinks?'

Gregor Nasin says, 'Interested in exotic drinks, are we? I am attempting to create some of these drinks I read about in this book I found. It was called the [Barkeep's Compendium]. I will first need to get my hands on a few [exotic ingredients].'

You say, 'What Barkeep's Compendium?'

Gregor Nasin says, 'I found the book amongst some garbage littering the ground in Freeport East. It appears to have been created by an ogre named [Clurg]. I am sure he wants it returned, but I will never part with it. That is... unless I get a few [exotic ingredients] I need to experiment with.'

You say, 'Who is Clurg?'

Gregor Nasin says, 'I do not know. Ask an ogre. Maybe they have heard of him.'

You say, 'What exotic ingredients?'

Gregor Nasin says, 'I desire a [kiola nut], [Erud's Tonic], [honey jum] and a [Koalindl fish]. If I could get those, I would no longer need to hold on to the [Barkeep's Compendium]. Whoever returned the ingredients to me could have it!'

Gregor wants you to get him the following items:

- Kiola Nut (purchased on the island of Erollisi in the Ocean of Tears for 2 gold pieces)

- Erud's Tonic (NO TRADE item that results from a quick quest; see the link to the left)

- Honey Jum from Rivervale (droppable item that results from the Honey Jum quest; see the link to the left)

- Koalindl Fish from the lake in the Temple of Life in Qeynos (NO TRADE item). You can get this fish one of a few ways: You can do the Regurgatonic quest in Ak'Anon and give the tonic to Frostbite the dog in West Karana (who coughs up a fish). You can also kill Frostbite (at the expense of your Halas faction). Or you can kill koalindl fish below the Temple of Life in Qeynos (major faction hits with the Priests of Life).

Give these items to Bartender Gregor in East Freeport. It's suggested you do the turn-ins one at a time to prevent it from getting bugged. You'll receive some platinum and the Bartender's Compendium (NO TRADE).

Hand in all four ingredients -- the nut, the NO-TRADE version of the tonic, the honey jum, and the fish.

Gregor Nasin says, 'Now I have every ingredient mentioned in the Barkeep Compendium. Here. You take it. <..click!..> Whoops! I just closed it. It's magically sealed. I never closed it before. It's useless to you. I have no need for it any longer. Maybe you can return it to [Clurg] for some type of reward.'

Take the Compendium to Clurg. If you're KOS in Oggok, you'll need to do faction work beforehand. Ogre or Dark Elf illusions coupled with a faction spell will also work, provided your faction isn't too low.

Upon doing the turn-in, Clurg gives you the Stein of Moggok.

[Thu Feb 11 16:01:35 2016] Clurg says 'Ahhh! My Barkeep Compendium has been returned! I am in your debt. I do not like to be in any man's debt. Let me offer you this as payment for your great service. Obtaining my book could not have been a simple task.'

Running Through the Quest...

You say, 'Hail, Clurg'

Clurg says 'Hello, friend. Have a drink. I have some [unique drinks]. Try one. And remember. You get rowdy, the [Bouncers] crush you.'

You say, 'What unique drinks?'

Clurg says 'I have been all over Norrath and even served with some very great [barkeeps in Freeport]. I am the creator of both [Flaming Clurg] and Ogre Swill.'

You say, 'What barkeeps in Freeport?'

Clurg says 'Yes. I have journeyed to many taverns, but it was in Freeport that I acquired most of my art. I compiled all my drink recipes in a [special book].'

You say, 'What Flaming Clurg?'

Clurg says 'The Flaming Clurg was my greatest creation. It brought me great respect in Oggok. Unfortunately, I have heard tales of an [imposter drink].'

He won't say any more unless your faction is high enough.

You say, 'What special book?'

Clurg says 'Find ways to help all in Oggok. Then we will have conversation.'

You say, 'What imposter drink?'

Clurg says 'Find ways to help all in Oggok. Then we will have conversation.'

Can Druid's do this quest?

I'm a 24 Druid and got the bartender's compendium went to turn it in. Went in Super Camo and didn't drop camo before giving it to Clurg. He said something like "thanks but when you can do something for all of Ogguk then we will talk". Fortunatly I bought several Nuts so I just need to get the other 3 parts to try again.
Just as a mental note to self. Barbarians don't like wolves even when they keep one as a pet. Killed me quick they did ;P. But I must say the Regurgitonic works it just makes the quest about twice as long to do.
Gonna try again tonight dropping the Camo before giving him the book.
A thought ... If you are grouped with the Enchanter who casts benevolence will it help the druid as well? Probably not.
I also just read on another board that you should Hail Clurg before handing the book. I don't think I did that so I will try that too.

Well tried with dropping camo and he still gave same response. Odd that he doesn't give you some faction for giving him his book. Will have to investigate doing lizard tail / meat quest to get faction up.

Whether you drop Camo or not before handing in the book is irrelevent. Camo does not help you complete quests when you don't have enough faction, since your actual faction is still used for a quest.

Hailing Clurg doesn't help you complete the quest. The reason that people recommend doing that before handing in the book is to make sure you can complete it. If Clurg won't give you the quest, you won't get the Stein for turning in the book.
Druid doing the quest

I'm a 26th season druid on Fennin Ro and I spent about an hour getting all the materials needed for the compendium (I was exploring a lot... it probably takes less). I turned it in just fine and got the book. I went to Ogguk in wolf form and Clurg conned aprehensive to me. I guess I was feeling a bit foolish so I decided to do the quest anyway and he ended up eating my book! Is it possible to raise faction with Clurg? If so, this is an excellent and easy quest for druids. True, int casters will use it better but I guess you can always sell it :) 200pp for about an hours work max... not bad!
What if?

Cheap Bastards!
ever try to find cheap decent gear for a chanter? Ya thats right WHAT cheap gear! its all expensive! So dont be a cheap scape to the low level chanters! chanters are not ninja looters like the malee are when fighting up close to the kill and can loot in a instant.

gdnom, you are one cheap *******. 200pp is nothing for anyone over lv35. Considering the item you are getting has better stats than a GBS you should pay what people are asking as long as it is reasonable. (I agree the going price is around 150pp)

In the 24+ hours of game time that it takes you to make an enchanter and do the quest, my level 37 could farm up a storm valued at several Kpp while getting exp.

But this is all probably going over your head, I'll let you get back to haggling with newbies over the price of bat wings and bone chips.

Paying 200 plat to a dingy level 16 player won't cut it for me. I'm sorry but I can level a chanter on my own and get this item on my own. I suggest everyone just do the same. 200 plat is too much for any newbie at 16 to recieve. Other classes can't even touch 50 plats at same level.

200 plat for an item that you can get at 16 is overpriced. Think about it people, the average level 16 player makes around 1 to 2 plats per hour on kill and loot and you're gonna give a level 16 Chanter 200 plats for only 3 hours of work?? That's 67 plats per hour! While you hack or cast away risking death making only 3 plats per hour. It's time to end unequal pay. Increase minimum wage... hehe :)

Create a Chanter and start building a Moggok collection and pass it out to your other characters. Plus, the Chanter is a pretty fun character to play once you get to know it. It's probably the best alternate character to have, no matter what your primary is.

One more time. Don't pay 200 Plat for it. Create a Chanter, Level to 16, and there you have it. It's not hard to get to 16. If you have friends who can power level you (gosh, I'm a 22 wizzie so I've made plenty of friends) You can get to 16 in 6 hours.
RE: Just Make a Chanter
# Apr 23 2001 at 11:10 AM Rating: Decent
Heh. If you think 6 hours of powerlevelling is worth less than 200 pp, you must live on a server where Plat is really rare. On most servers, the price of this is now steady at around 125-150 pp anyway. If you have friends that can PL you that fast, they can probably lend you that much - probably more easily than they can babysitting your newbie Enchanter.

In conclusion: if your time is worthless, create an Enchanter just to do this quest. If it isn't, buy one.

I've done the quest up to about 3 times now as a 16 chanter on Lanys but am getting annoyed with all the clerics that try to attack me around norath... Being as foolish as i am i never noticed which factions was actually lowerd as i killed that pesky fish so if anyone could comment on how to raize my faction back up and which factions i distroyed would be greatly appreciated thanks and good luck all.

Will Sneaking or Camo work on Clurg? I have all the components except the fish. However, I'm a Monk, doing the quest with my buds (a Wizard and a Ranger). If we sneak or camo our way in, we'll be indifferent at best...do you need amiable or better?

i doubt it.. unless your a rogue with the hide/sneak combo they should see through it.
Invis and camo don't work either becuase the second you had the book to Clurg you will lose the camo and BOOM! you'll be dead by the 4 ogres stading around him.. heh sorry

About the faction as a chanter i finished the quest with Darkelf illusion and alliance that got me up to Amiable so i don't know if you indifferent would work

good luck, hope you find a solution just my 2cp

Update on dog killin'

Ok, I've done the stein quest about 7 times now, every time killing the dog, here's how to handle it, and potentially not take a faction hit if you wanna get a partner.

For just standard killing, your biggest problem is Ulrich. This isn't a problem, it just takes a little outwitting him. Sit and meditate and watch for Ulrich to come out, when he does, target him. Return to meditating, he'll stand at the front of the house looking towards Qeynos hills for about two minutes, he will then turn to start walking towards the river. At which point, stand and cast bind sight on him. (There are many uses for this spell) You'll now be seeing through Ulrich's eyes. Immediately then target Frostbite, but stay in Ulrich's eyes. He will walk back through the barbarian village down to the river.

At which point pull Frosbite with choke or Tashan(i) while still in Ulrich's eyes. He shouldn't aggro at this range, but if he does, you'll know and can immediately cancel and start running or cast gate.

Now, pull Frosbite NEly, away from the village and away from the guard tower. I haven't had the guards aggro on me, but I think they might.

Frosbite is an easy kill, he's tennish.

Now, here's how to do it without taking a faction hit. If you get a partner, it's simple, but otherwise, during the day Ulrich is pretty heavily camped by the evil races, as he gives good experience and has just the right amount of spawn time. If you have breeze, offer to keep them in breezes or quicknesses (You won't really need the mana anyhow, Frostbite is easy) if they just kill Frosbite when you tell them to and then let you loot.

So, here is what you do, pull Frostbite without choke, preferrably a tashan(i) and root him, sanity warp twice, and hit him with your dagger a couple of times. Root him again, then memory blur him, then tell your partner in crime to finish him. Frostbite dies, no faction hit to you, and the evil races that are camping Ulrich take far worse faction hits for killing him than they will from Frostbite, they're KOS anyway, so they won't care, as long as you have something to trade. Note: Don't use choke or any DoTs. If you memory blur him and he dies from a DoT its neutral damage and the body will disappear.
Can DE Necros do this?
# Mar 28 2001 at 6:27 PM Rating: Default
I'm plotting to take my necro to do this quest as she's painfully low on any equipment yet. (lvl 22 and barely any thing on!) I'm having a bit of help on the parts that require I go to RV and the Sister Isle but will be doing the killing of Frostbite and the Erudin part of the quest seeing as they are No Drops.
My question is that is it possible to go into Oggok and not cast any form of Alliance on Clurg and still complete this quest without sceraming in utter frustration after hours of work because my faction isn't high enough?
Any words of advice would be much appreciated. (Oh, and if I had the plat to buy it believe me I would but every little shiny coin goes toward spells)

Ok, couple of things: You'll need indifferent faction in Freeport with Gregor. Two, you'll need indifferent faction with Clurg. The latter should be easy, dunno about the former. I know Clurg is a faction unto himself though he also has faction with all the powers of Ogguk.

I don't know if you'll ever be able to get faction enough with Gregor... Honestly, if you're a 22 DE necro, you already have terrible faction with druids anyway you're better off hunting treants for several hours and just buying one.
If you take killing the dog...
# Mar 23 2001 at 3:56 AM Rating: Default
Ok, I went all about getting the regurgatonic and everything, and forgot to cast benevolence on the damned dog when I finally brought it to him. Thus, he didn't cough up the damned fish. I was so angered, I just said "To hell with it, I don't care about Halas anyway, I'll be KOS there."

So, I decided to start killing the dog to try and get the fish, I died a total of three times now, but finally got the damned stein, here's the details if you go this path.

If you are gonna kill Frostbite you need to pull him very far away, and also you need to watch when the owner comes out, because at 20, he conned red, and practically hit like a dragoon. So...

As an enchanter the dog is easy as pie, maybe 10th level or so, without a pet I could have practically taken it with my dagger. But pull with a choke, color flux, fall back, root, sanity warp, sanity warp, then finish it off with your dagger, or watch it sit their and whine as it chokes to death. The spawn on the dog is about eight minutes. I got the fish on about my fifth try. Know this: Once you kill the dog once you might as well keep on going, two made me KOS to all barbarians.

Be very careful about the owner, get your timing down, because he will kill your sorry rear dead.

Now, when you head back to Freeport to finish off the quest, there will be some faction problems. Contrary to popular belief the barbarian fisherman does not fall into any of the factions that you drop by killing Frostbite. In fact, for some reason, he looked at me amiably, he might have been a member of the Rogues of the White Rose, which are the rival group in Halas which is the only faction you gain from killing Frostbite.

he didn't give me problems, but while I was cashing in my things, seemingly out of nowhere Lenka Stoutheart and Bronto Thudfoot spawned right at the counter wanting to buy a drink. So, they started wailing on me. If the barbarian in West Karana hits hard, these guys rocked my farging world.

I'm gonna examine their spawn points a bit more, but it looks like they spawn in the bar itself, so you have to be very very careful when cashing in stuff for the compendium.

This adds some roughness to the quest, but to be honest, this is the kinda of quest I would like to see in EQ, and I'm glad I'm doing it now by killing the dog. It's rough, and it's more than just cashing in crap and travelling across continents and waiting for spawn points. By killing the dog it puts some risk in the quest, where previously all it was all sheer banality.

Ask yourself this: Is a Dark Elf, Erudite or High Elf enchanter gonna have any business in Halas anyway? Bleh, let them have their frozen north. Hope this might help.

Get the fish. Here's how:
# Mar 18 2001 at 7:40 PM Rating: Default
My DE agnostic enchantress began doing this quest at level 8. Excellent faction & loot. Go to Surefall Glades (under half elf or wood elf illusion), cast "alliance" on Gerael Woodone and hail him. Tell him you'll take the flask of nitrates (assuming your faction is acceptable). Go to the Ak'anon zoo and find Kimble Nogflop. Cast "alliance" on him if he cons less than indifferent. Give him the flask of nitrates. He will give you regurgatonic (and faction). Go to the barbarian fishing village in West Karana, cast illusion human on yourself and "alliance" on the dog. Give him the regurgatonic, he'll barf the fish right up. NO NEGATIVE FACTION HITS. Sound like lots of work? That's why we never sell the stein for less than 200pp.
RE: Get the fish. Here's how:
# Mar 25 2001 at 12:03 PM Rating: Default
I just got 2 fish, it is pretty easy. I created a human warrior, then hopped in and killed it. he was level 1, and while it knocks you down a whole level of faction, it doesn't matter, then I just logged on as my other char and took the fish
Two?

What you saw i'm sure wasn't 2 steins of Moggok. What you probably saw was a mage holding a Stein of Moggok in one hand and a Stein of Ullissa in the other hand.
RE: Two?

No, that's the standard two-fisted-drinking Enchanter for you. Stein of Moggok (+10 int) and Crude Stein (+15 cha).
Possible for DE Lev9
# Mar 11 2001 at 5:13 PM Rating: Decent
it is doable for someone at level 9 to do, BUT you need to have Alliance, Invisibility, and Illusion Human, to do it. hte hardest part is really finding all the places you need to get to, other than that it is only a matter of time, I did it last night and it took about 3 hours to get it all done from scratch.
the fish
# Mar 10 2001 at 12:10 PM Rating: Default
I tried the Ak'Anon quest and it did not work. I even cast Barbarian illusion AND Alliance on Frostbite before giving him the regurg potion... nothing.
So then I killed Frostbite - NOTHING.
Not sure if I did anything wrong, but it looks like the ONLY way to get the fish, is by killing the fish!
Has anyone tried fishing?
# Mar 06 2001 at 12:02 PM Rating: Default
Maybe this is too simple a solution, but has anyone tried simply fishing for the fish you need? Especially with the advent of the new tacklebox, maybe there's a special lure just for this fish?

Why is this quest not on the list for quests best suited for Enchanters?
RE: Why?
# Feb 21 2001 at 7:54 PM Rating: Decent
I think it's because the class listed for the quests are based on what classes can use the final item and not who's best suited to complete it.
This way might be easier?

Here fishie fishie fishie
# Jan 26 2001 at 9:18 PM Rating: Default
I just did this leg of the quest myself last night as a level 7 gnome, and I have some tips:
There is a paladin in the lake named enric something-or-other. He has a huge aggro radius and will kill you if you mess with the fish. However, he will not leave the water no matter what. i tried to train him out with a wizard mule and he wouldn't budge, even though he was glaring threateningly at me for hitting him with a DD. I walked over to him outside of the lake even and /poked him and he didn't say boo. This can work for you.
Wade into the water and swim around. When you see the fishie, target it and get back to the ramp. Then, when you're just barely below water let rip with a nuke. I found that suffocating sphere even could kill the fish (though not outright). Then get the hell out of the water. When the fish dies, con the Paladin. If he's glaring threateningly, camp and relog before looting the fish. if he's not KOS to you, swim in and loot the fish. I killed four fishies last night and went from indifferent to apprehensive to the clerics there, so no big deal for me.
Note that if you don't kill the fishie, go underwater real quick, lay another nuke and get the hell out. You have a little time before the paladin can swim over to you.
The Paladin will heal/buff the Koalindl, so it may be harder to kill sometimes.

# Apr 01 2001 at 5:24 PM Rating: Default
no, there is no limit, i've gotten about 30 of em, once in a blue moon, gregor will simply take one item and not return anything, it's a bug that has terribly bad results, lng walk to fix. But hey friends, just take along six people from your guild along (a porter helps a ton as well), and have them all do all parts, then multiquest it at freeport each time. You'll get six steins in the time it takes to get one (of course they are lore, so the people who go with you will end up holding them for you, and perhaps keeping them hehe) this is how i have gotten 30 in all of two weeks, everyone in my guild wants one, and all they have to do is take an hour of time to port me around and carry a few items :)

NO MORE MULES
# Jan 08 2001 at 4:13 AM Rating: Default
I have done this quest probably 20 times if not more. To get the Koalndil, I made a fighter in Qeynos and had him kill the fish and take the faction hit. Logging off and back on with the chanter, I looted the corpse and was off and running. THIS NO LONGER WORKS. I sold my stein in WK when a big offer was made, figuring so close to qeynos I can do it again without difficulty. When my mule attacked the koalndil, IT HIT BACK FOR 300+ DAMAGE. Verant has now ended mine and many others shortcut through this quest. I post this to warn you of the change. (I was conned by another enchanter who obviously sold her stein before realizing the change). Don't get conned like me, and start selling the steins fore more plats. They will now be more rare.

Good luck

Congrats You just got hit by Rodcet knife. He random spawns as one of his creations. You can con to see if itt is Rodcet. Probally the best idea since I can't solo EQ Dietys very well. I just did this quest today so i know that the fish hasn't been upgraded.
RE: NO MORE MULES
# Jan 17 2001 at 9:35 PM Rating: Decent
Ah hah! Thats really too bad, cause I just sold a stein on Lanys for 250pp. =) They HAVE been more rare to buy recently, and I even heard someone say 'not worth doing the quest anymore' on ooc in commonlands. Funny thing is I met up with the uber-fish the day of a new patch, and put 2 and 2 together, but incorrectly I guess. The price and availability will likely return to normal then after the fishy is no longer Rodcet's avatar. Too bad.
The Rare Fish spawn
# Feb 10 2001 at 3:40 AM Rating: Good
No, the quest has not been nerfed and the Koalindl have not been completely replaced.

Very rarely, one of the fish in the pool will actually be the avatar of Rodcet Nife (aye, a level 70 fish) that will destroy you with hits for 300 and 400.

All you need do is CON the fish. Avoid if red. I've done the quest about 15 times and have seen Rodcet Nife's fish only once.

Level 70?! OMG! I wonder what it drops. Fish scales and fresh fish most likely. That's irony.
