Note: Unless you're an enchanter with the benefit of faction spells and illusions, this quest may be a bit time consuming.

Clurg, the Ogre bartender in Ogguk, has lost his bartender's compendium and wants it back badly. It is currently held by Bartender Gregor, in the Seafarer's Roost in East Freeport. Fortunately, Gregor has a lust for exotic drinks, and lacks only the ingredients to make his dream concoctions. He will give you the compendium for those ingredients.

You say, 'Hail, Gregor Nasin'

Gregor Nasin says, 'Sit down and name your poison! I know we are lacking in originality, but I intend to create some [exotic drinks].'

You say, 'What exotic drinks?'

Gregor Nasin says, 'Interested in exotic drinks, are we? I am attempting to create some of these drinks I read about in this book I found. It was called the [Barkeep's Compendium]. I will first need to get my hands on a few [exotic ingredients].'

You say, 'What Barkeep's Compendium?'

Gregor Nasin says, 'I found the book amongst some garbage littering the ground in Freeport East. It appears to have been created by an ogre named [Clurg]. I am sure he wants it returned, but I will never part with it. That is... unless I get a few [exotic ingredients] I need to experiment with.'

You say, 'Who is Clurg?'

Gregor Nasin says, 'I do not know. Ask an ogre. Maybe they have heard of him.'

You say, 'What exotic ingredients?'

Gregor Nasin says, 'I desire a [kiola nut], [Erud's Tonic], [honey jum] and a [Koalindl fish]. If I could get those, I would no longer need to hold on to the [Barkeep's Compendium]. Whoever returned the ingredients to me could have it!'

Gregor wants you to get him the following items:

- Kiola Nut (purchased on the island of Erollisi in the Ocean of Tears for 2 gold pieces)

- Erud's Tonic (NO TRADE item that results from a quick quest; see the link to the left)

- Honey Jum from Rivervale (droppable item that results from the Honey Jum quest; see the link to the left)

- Koalindl Fish from the lake in the Temple of Life in Qeynos (NO TRADE item). You can get this fish one of a few ways: You can do the Regurgatonic quest in Ak'Anon and give the tonic to Frostbite the dog in West Karana (who coughs up a fish). You can also kill Frostbite (at the expense of your Halas faction). Or you can kill koalindl fish below the Temple of Life in Qeynos (major faction hits with the Priests of Life).

Give these items to Bartender Gregor in East Freeport. It's suggested you do the turn-ins one at a time to prevent it from getting bugged. You'll receive some platinum and the Bartender's Compendium (NO TRADE).

Hand in all four ingredients -- the nut, the NO-TRADE version of the tonic, the honey jum, and the fish.

Gregor Nasin says, 'Now I have every ingredient mentioned in the Barkeep Compendium. Here. You take it. <..click!..> Whoops! I just closed it. It's magically sealed. I never closed it before. It's useless to you. I have no need for it any longer. Maybe you can return it to [Clurg] for some type of reward.'

Take the Compendium to Clurg. If you're KOS in Oggok, you'll need to do faction work beforehand. Ogre or Dark Elf illusions coupled with a faction spell will also work, provided your faction isn't too low.

Upon doing the turn-in, Clurg gives you the Stein of Moggok.

[Thu Feb 11 16:01:35 2016] Clurg says 'Ahhh! My Barkeep Compendium has been returned! I am in your debt. I do not like to be in any man's debt. Let me offer you this as payment for your great service. Obtaining my book could not have been a simple task.'

Running Through the Quest...

You say, 'Hail, Clurg'

Clurg says 'Hello, friend. Have a drink. I have some [unique drinks]. Try one. And remember. You get rowdy, the [Bouncers] crush you.'

You say, 'What unique drinks?'

Clurg says 'I have been all over Norrath and even served with some very great [barkeeps in Freeport]. I am the creator of both [Flaming Clurg] and Ogre Swill.'

You say, 'What barkeeps in Freeport?'

Clurg says 'Yes. I have journeyed to many taverns, but it was in Freeport that I acquired most of my art. I compiled all my drink recipes in a [special book].'

You say, 'What Flaming Clurg?'

Clurg says 'The Flaming Clurg was my greatest creation. It brought me great respect in Oggok. Unfortunately, I have heard tales of an [imposter drink].'

He won't say any more unless your faction is high enough.

You say, 'What special book?'

Clurg says 'Find ways to help all in Oggok. Then we will have conversation.'

You say, 'What imposter drink?'

Clurg says 'Find ways to help all in Oggok. Then we will have conversation.'

Charm Frostbite to get fish
# May 21 2002 at 2:30 PM Rating: Decent
Frostbite no longer accepts regurgitonic with any faction level--he says that he has no use for the item and that I can have it back.

However...

...If you charm him, THEN give him the tonic, he will happily give up the fish.

It's not the dog that is the problem. It's the regurgitonic you are using. I had this problem and cast an identify on the reguritonic and it ID'ed as a "Bad Regurgitonic". I discovered that these are rare (maybe 1 in 20 or more) so if you have this happen just destroy your regurgitonic and go get another one. I now check them before I leave the Zoo in Ak'Anon. I use a Silvery Mask to cast the Identify spell, by the way. It's a very handy item which you can probably buy in the Bazaar from another player if you cannot quest for it yourself. I'm not sure what level you need to be to use the mask, however.

I did the Frostbite part today and it worked once, but when I tried to do it again it didn't work and nothing I can do will get Frostbite to give me the fish.

Could it be there is a limit to the number of times Frostbite will let you give him the tonic? Maybe only once per day or something?

With the change that allows you bind in Timorous Deep this quest became a lot easier (I ran it completely in 25 minutes.)
Frostbite problem?
# May 15 2002 at 5:11 PM Rating: Default
There seems to be a new problem with the regurgitonic and Frostbite method of getting the fish. I've done this many times in the past with no problems, but today when I tried it Frostbite gave the regurgitonic back to me and said that he didn't need that item. I tried it when my faction with Frostbite was amiable, indifferent and dubious, all with same result. Did a recent patch mess this up? Has anyone done this successfully recently?

Yes, they did implement a patch where supposedly one could not give anything to an npc that was not quest related.

I am not sure of the exact reason for this, but I know many times high level people like to give very nice items to npc's to perhaps entice others to kill that npc, etc. ...Or as a way to offer the item to a lower level player but with an added challenge.

on the Firiona Vie server for example, planes armor and loot is not "No Drop" like it is on blue servers. But because high level people don't want lots of twinkage going on, they in their lunacy, put extra very sweet items on various high level city guards or merchants...yada yada yada. What a waste.

Hopefully, this latest bug was brought to Verant's attention.

So I'm working on my faction so I can do the Quest with my Halfling Druid and I finally con Clurg and he is amiable. I get so excited I go into one of my packs and give him a book. He say me no dumb ogre, me accept gift. I go huh, he is amiable, I should have got the stein. Then I realize the book I gave him is in his hand. I think, that shouldn't be. I gave him the Iron Bound Tome I was carrying by mistake. Doh!!! I give him the compendium and he gives me the stein. Of course, I'm still out the Iron Bound Tome. I guess the morale is always check an item before you give it to complete a quest.

DE Chanters

A couple points I'd like to bring up for any DE Enchanters doing this quest.

1. When getting the kiola nut, the best I could get the merchant up to was dubious. This might have to due with my level 12 enchanter worshipping Innoruuk. This is inconsequential, because when I tried to do the Kiola Nut part with my 12 Wiz, I found out about the pirate on the island (aggros over half the island from what I hear). He hits fast, so the chances of getting off a spell are slight. I got my nuts when my wizard went back to retrieve her corpse, and one of the sisters was in the process of womping the guy. His name is Zyle Bensmill (level 12-16). If you see him coming, root or mez him if you can, get your nuts, and gate out of there.

2. Get a port to Toxx next, preferably from a druid. You can group, then cast invis before the port/trans. That way, the wandering erudites won't mash you when you get there. The reason I go to Toxx, is to get the Eruds Tonic (simple matter of illusion:erudite and Alliance) first, by entering Erudin from the back door instead of the dock. This way you won't have to worry about jumping off the boat before you can cast your illusion/invis spells. Once you enter Erudin, cast illusion:erudite and then Alliance on the first Sentry you see. Get the tonic and get to the dock. I always cast invis before stepping on the shuttle, just to be safe.

3. By the time the boat reaches Qeynos, your illusion will be gone (obviously), and more than likely so will your invis. So on the boat, it might be a good idea to memm illusion: human or half elf, instead of erudite. I have yet to see any guards at the end of Qeynos' dock, so you should be able to step onto it, cast your illusion or just invis. I do both just in case the invis fails. Remember, you're more than likely bound a long way away....better safe than sorry. Head to the North Qeynos zone. Once inside, illusion/invis/alliance again. Move out into the newbie zone until you're a safe distance away from the guards, than camp. You do that here, so when you log back on, you'll be safe, and can recast your illusion/alliance spells.

Now is when you use a mule. Other posts mentioned this, and it works pretty good. Make a human cleric that worships (I believe) Rodcet Nife, and you should start in Qeynos. You'll probably want to take the time to get the mule to second level, then put all your skill points into 1h blunt. Proceed to pounding the fish. I have yet to not get a corpse from it. Once the fish is dead, log out with your mule, and relog with your enchanter. Cast your illusion half elf/alliance spells. Go get your fish corpse, then gate back to freeport.

4. For me this is the easiest part. But then again, I have a 30 bard that can do a Carl Lewis through Kithicor. Since this quest will take a long time (EQ time), do this part whenever it's daylight. You can try it with illusion/halfling, but I haven't had to. Regardless, whenever if it's daytime at the start of this whole thing, do this part first. If not, then it can wait 'til last. I generally check the vendors in Misty Thicket for 3 honeycomb. It cost my bard 1gp/5cp for one, but it might be more for others. Give the honeycombs and 30 gp to Kizzie Mintopp for the honey jum. If you had your enchanter do this, then just gate back to freeport. If not, then you'll have to find a quiet place to do a drop/transfer.

5. Now that you have all your nasty ingredients, head to the Seafarer's Roost. Don't foget to illusion yourself. Occasionally there are npcs in there that won't like you. So I would hang just inside the door and con them. One time there were 2 barbarians and an ogre that were threatening to me even with Alliance. Hang back on the other side of the dock until they leave (don't know how long that takes, but they will leave eventually). Once everything is safe, give Gregor his stuff, and he'll give you the compendium.

6. I don't see any choice but to leg it to Ogguk. Just invis and avoid all undead, and you should get there fine. As a darkie, you shouldn't need illusion in Ogguk. Just make sure you dole out Alliance to a guard and a merchant. AND MAKE SURE YOU ALLIANCE CLURG!!! I lost a compendium because he was indifferent. Make sure he is amiable. Get your Stein, and gate.

Boo-Yaa. Sell for 200 plat. lather...rinse...repeat.

At low levels, I really can't see doing this with anyone other than a dark elf enchanter. If you read this, and plan to make a darkie enchanter, I would suggest being Agnostic. It might make doing the quest a lot easier. If you worship Innoruuk, well, hopefully this post helps.

# Apr 08 2002 at 3:52 PM Rating: Excellent
I know some of you may think qeynos is a good place to live, but not me. I Have done this quest about 100 times, and I kill the fish everytime. Just saves time, and energy. BTW, If you are on the Bertoxx Server, and you need a stein, just give me a tell. my name is Hefe. I usually either have one on me, or at least most of the items to get them. I try not to charge rediculous amounts, but sometimes it just takes to long to get them. Just my humble 2cp.
Honey Jum, and the Fish
# Apr 07 2002 at 7:54 AM Rating: Decent
Sorry for the duplicate posting...

Just wanted to clarify something about getting the Honey Jum. I have seen people post recently that you must give the money to the NPC in Gold pieces, not Plat. This is not the case. The first time I did the quest, I had forgotten to bring gold with me, so I just decided to give her 3 pp, and it worked fine.

Also, regarding the Koalindl fish, the way I get it is I have made a Human Cleric (they start right at the pool with the fish) to kill the fish for me. Just camp my main there, bring in the cleric, kill the fish, then loot it with my main.

Sorry if this is repeating info that was already posted, but I thought this might help the person who was wondering if the Frostbite part of the quest was broken.

Faction Problems
# Mar 18 2002 at 10:50 AM Rating: Decent
I'm a DE enchanter and I've read the guide, but it needs to be updated. At first when i went to erudin for a spell of mine i was dubvious with Erudite illusion. then, a few weeks later after killing nothing but gnolls in SK and after a few patches, I came back to do the eruds tonic portion of this quest. I jumped in the water, Illusioned myself, and got out and started walking on my way. Then I glanced down on my screen, and saw "Die Infadel!!" and instantly reacted like a de always should, and RAN. I had 4 guards on me in the water, but i got off an invis and one by one memory blurred each of them.
I had survived (with 20hp) and was "safe" on the ledge on the other side of the harbor. I know for a fact I NEVER touched the Erudite faction, but I'm now kos, illusion or not. I've also noticed I'm threateningly to the guards of Oggok in DE form. This all with a religion of Innokurok, and I'm reasonably confused...
Any DE chanters who do this quest should check faction no matter what illusions you have up, don't trust the guide.

RE: Faction Problems
# Mar 18 2002 at 4:10 PM Rating: Decent
Nope - Trust the guide. If you have made an Enchanter with a religion, that is your fault. If you are low level, remake ur character. I myself have done this quest tons of times, using a mule in Qeynos to get the fish corpse as to not hurt my qeynos faction. It's the religion that they see through the illusion. After using an illusion with both a religion and not I can see a TOTAL difference. The guards in Oggok and their faction must have been hurt by you somehow, as they are not KOS to innoruk nor DE. I have often thought of redoing my Enchanter but after 35 levels it's a hard thought.
I have learned one thing though - ALWAYS CON THINGS!!! Even if they are green to you.
Stein Quest in 30 minutes
# Mar 17 2002 at 7:14 PM Rating: Excellent
I have timed myself for doing this quest and have my time down to about 30 minutes or so.
To do it this fast takesa little set up and if it is your first time doing it, it wil take a while. This is how I , as a 36th level druid, do the quest.
First is the Kiola nuts. Take the boat from Freport East towards Butcher Block. Get off at the first stop and buy however many nuts you want ( one for each Stein you want to get).
Next, port to Misty Thicket. I usually check the vendors in the thicket to see if they have any honeycomb on them. It takes three honey comb to get the Honey Jum you need for one Stein. Go into Rivervale and talk to Kizzie Mintopp. It takes 30gp ( has to be gold) and three honeycomb to get her to make the Honey Jum for you ( walk up to her and say "Will you make Honey Jum for me)
From here port to Surefall Glade and talk to the guy with the staff outside of where you port in at ( sorry can't remember his name) Say to him " I will deliver the flask" If yourr faction is good enough he will hand you the "Flask of Nitrates" if not kill the poachers in the caves there until your faction is good.
Take the nitrates and go to Steamfont. Run down into the zoo area and talk to the gnome that is down there. Actually just hand him the nitrates and he hands you the "regurgatonic" (sp?)
Take the regurgatonic and port back to Surefall Glade, get another flask of nitrates, and take off for West Karanna. When you get into WK find the named dog ( Frostbite) near the river with some barbarians. Give the regurgatonic to the dog and he gives you the fish you need.
Next stop is Erudin, so port to Toxx and go on in. Go to the Blue Falcon bar ( I think that is the name) and buy a "Kiss of Innoruuk" take that and go into the library. Give the Kiss of Inorruuk to Sinnkin Highbrow, she gives you the "Erud's Tonic".
So now you have the nut, the honey jum, the fish , and Erud's tonic. Take these to East Freeport and give them to Gregor in the bar next to the docks. once he gives you the Barkeep Compendium take it and head for Feerott.
This is where it gets tricky. As a loyal foloower of Tunare and a woodelf the only way to get into the city of Ogguk is in wolf form. If this is your first time doing the quest faction will be an issue. Since druids don't get those nice faction adjusting spells like enchanters we have to work for it. You can do this by talking to the Greenbloods and doing the lizardman tales quest.
Once you get your faction with Clurg up take the Barkeep Compendium and give it to him, asking first about the compendium. Once he gives you the Stein take it and enjoy selling or using it:-)
I have done this quest enough times that I have raised my faction with the Ogre's to the point where I am not kos in Ogguk anymnore.
Once you get used to it, this quest can be done in 30 minutes or less if you already have the nuts and the nitrates.
Good Luck!!

Bards can do it
# Mar 11 2002 at 1:15 AM Rating: Decent
WARNING: I am writing this as an Agnostic Half Elf Bard of the 42nd level. I am not sure if a non-Agnostic Bard can succesfully finish the quest.

I have done this quest a few times. You MUST have Mask of Deception and be of a high enough lvl to use the dark elf illusion (lvl 13). You also MUST have Cinda's Charismatic Charillon (lvl 11) and the ability to use a wind instrument (lvl 14). Therefore, the minimum level is 14.

Once you get to Oggok with the Barkeepers Compendium, turn on Dark Elf Illusion and seek out Clurg. Make sure you have your wind instrument in and your Cinda's Charismatic Carillon memorized. When you come in very close contact with him sing the song. It should raise your faction with him to Amiably. Turn in the Compendium and recieve your reward.

Other advice:
- Make a SK alt and kill the Koalindl Fish. This way you avoid the faction hit on the character you intend to this quest with. Then just loot it on your other character.

Things not to try:
-Trying the quest only equipped with invisibility. You will end up dead.
- Turning in the Bartenders Compendium with Indifferent faction. You will not recieve the Stein Of Moggok.

After doing the quest three times, I have raised my faction with the Ogre Guard from KOS to Threateningly.

Barfly's at Gregor's bar
# Feb 25 2002 at 3:27 PM Rating: Decent
Im a lvl 9 DE enchanter, worships Inny, and thought I would add my 2cp to this forum. I have now completed this quest twice. The main problems I have had are:

1. The ogre warrior (Brondo Thunderhut?) drinking at Gregor's bar in EFP is kos to me even with my human illusion on. Gregor is the NPC that you need to turn in the 4 items to to get the bartender's compendium. I tried to cast alliance on him and his partner and then hand in the items to gregor to get the book, but alliance only lasts about 20 seconds, and they still killed me...although I got the book )

I have found out that the ogre and his friend despawn around 6pm game time and a dark elf and I think a halfling rogue replace them in the bar. I am not KOS to them.

So for all you dark elf enchanters out there, you may want to wait until night falls to turn in the items to gregor.

2. I am unable to get the quest started for the Koalindl fish. The druid in Surefall will not give me the Flask of Nitrate to hand in to the zookeeper in A'kanon. Faction is not high enough even in wood elf form. Thus, I have had to make a human pally mule to kill the fish in Queynos. Stay away from the NPC guarding the fish though! Been killed a few times doing this...but who cares eh? Hes just a mule )

I did this as a level 15 bard with mask of deception and faction song (with a minotaur horn). I didn't meet anything in oggok worse than apprehensive with the illusion up -- I'm agnostic so YMMV. Clurg was apprehensive as a dark elf, faction song brought him to amiable.

Also to note: the guy for the regurgitonic is found down in the "moat" by the pens. Frostbite is at the barbarian fishing village in the SW corner of WK. 3pp works for the honey jum, she's found in a whole facing the fool's gold.

I ran the gem inlaid gaunts quest at the same time, for my mage. Otherwise I probably would have killed the dog.

Our halfling party was most definitely KOS to the ogre guards! We might have been able to creep in there safely before, but our faction has changed a lot since we were level one.
