Note: Unless you're an enchanter with the benefit of faction spells and illusions, this quest may be a bit time consuming.

Clurg, the Ogre bartender in Ogguk, has lost his bartender's compendium and wants it back badly. It is currently held by Bartender Gregor, in the Seafarer's Roost in East Freeport. Fortunately, Gregor has a lust for exotic drinks, and lacks only the ingredients to make his dream concoctions. He will give you the compendium for those ingredients.

You say, 'Hail, Gregor Nasin'

Gregor Nasin says, 'Sit down and name your poison! I know we are lacking in originality, but I intend to create some [exotic drinks].'

You say, 'What exotic drinks?'

Gregor Nasin says, 'Interested in exotic drinks, are we? I am attempting to create some of these drinks I read about in this book I found. It was called the [Barkeep's Compendium]. I will first need to get my hands on a few [exotic ingredients].'

You say, 'What Barkeep's Compendium?'

Gregor Nasin says, 'I found the book amongst some garbage littering the ground in Freeport East. It appears to have been created by an ogre named [Clurg]. I am sure he wants it returned, but I will never part with it. That is... unless I get a few [exotic ingredients] I need to experiment with.'

You say, 'Who is Clurg?'

Gregor Nasin says, 'I do not know. Ask an ogre. Maybe they have heard of him.'

You say, 'What exotic ingredients?'

Gregor Nasin says, 'I desire a [kiola nut], [Erud's Tonic], [honey jum] and a [Koalindl fish]. If I could get those, I would no longer need to hold on to the [Barkeep's Compendium]. Whoever returned the ingredients to me could have it!'

Gregor wants you to get him the following items:

- Kiola Nut (purchased on the island of Erollisi in the Ocean of Tears for 2 gold pieces)

- Erud's Tonic (NO TRADE item that results from a quick quest; see the link to the left)

- Honey Jum from Rivervale (droppable item that results from the Honey Jum quest; see the link to the left)

- Koalindl Fish from the lake in the Temple of Life in Qeynos (NO TRADE item). You can get this fish one of a few ways: You can do the Regurgatonic quest in Ak'Anon and give the tonic to Frostbite the dog in West Karana (who coughs up a fish). You can also kill Frostbite (at the expense of your Halas faction). Or you can kill koalindl fish below the Temple of Life in Qeynos (major faction hits with the Priests of Life).

Give these items to Bartender Gregor in East Freeport. It's suggested you do the turn-ins one at a time to prevent it from getting bugged. You'll receive some platinum and the Bartender's Compendium (NO TRADE).

Hand in all four ingredients -- the nut, the NO-TRADE version of the tonic, the honey jum, and the fish.

Gregor Nasin says, 'Now I have every ingredient mentioned in the Barkeep Compendium. Here. You take it. <..click!..> Whoops! I just closed it. It's magically sealed. I never closed it before. It's useless to you. I have no need for it any longer. Maybe you can return it to [Clurg] for some type of reward.'

Take the Compendium to Clurg. If you're KOS in Oggok, you'll need to do faction work beforehand. Ogre or Dark Elf illusions coupled with a faction spell will also work, provided your faction isn't too low.

Upon doing the turn-in, Clurg gives you the Stein of Moggok.

[Thu Feb 11 16:01:35 2016] Clurg says 'Ahhh! My Barkeep Compendium has been returned! I am in your debt. I do not like to be in any man's debt. Let me offer you this as payment for your great service. Obtaining my book could not have been a simple task.'

Running Through the Quest...

You say, 'Hail, Clurg'

Clurg says 'Hello, friend. Have a drink. I have some [unique drinks]. Try one. And remember. You get rowdy, the [Bouncers] crush you.'

You say, 'What unique drinks?'

Clurg says 'I have been all over Norrath and even served with some very great [barkeeps in Freeport]. I am the creator of both [Flaming Clurg] and Ogre Swill.'

You say, 'What barkeeps in Freeport?'

Clurg says 'Yes. I have journeyed to many taverns, but it was in Freeport that I acquired most of my art. I compiled all my drink recipes in a [special book].'

You say, 'What Flaming Clurg?'

Clurg says 'The Flaming Clurg was my greatest creation. It brought me great respect in Oggok. Unfortunately, I have heard tales of an [imposter drink].'

He won't say any more unless your faction is high enough.

You say, 'What special book?'

Clurg says 'Find ways to help all in Oggok. Then we will have conversation.'

You say, 'What imposter drink?'

Clurg says 'Find ways to help all in Oggok. Then we will have conversation.'

Quest worked fine again
# Mar 22 2003 at 3:52 PM Rating: Decent
Ok was reading some more posts here. The other night I destroyed the current regurgitonic I had and went back to get another one. This time around it worked. Did the whole quest a second and third time each with success.

By the way the tonic I had did not actually say "bad". Quite possibly you would have to cast an identify spell to know this for sure, but who can tell that from just looking at it? I never had a problem at all running the quest before. It was just a natural assumption to assume the quest might be broken as many people thought. No sense getting mad at people who made the same assumption.
who can do it?
# Mar 18 2003 at 2:23 PM Rating: Default
would a mage have a really difficult time doing this quest?
RE: who can do it?
# Jun 24 2004 at 12:40 AM Rating: Decent
A mage would need a lot of faction work. You need to go to a mix of good and evil towns: Erudin, Freeport, Rivervale, Oggok. Not just enter safely but have enough faction to do quest steps.

Surprisingly Gregor's might as hard as Clurg's faction requirements, or worse. As I recall he was apprehensive and wouldn't give me the quest without Alliance, whereas Clurg was indifferent. Clurg has his own faction and seems initially indifferent to everyone (the bouncers nearby are of course a different matter.) I'm an agnostic Erudite chanter.

Straighten It Out
# Mar 12 2003 at 4:32 PM Rating: Decent
Okay, just for the record, the quests involving this one are NOT NOT NOT broken!!! Just identify the regurgitonic when you get it from Kimble, if it just says "Regurgitonic", then you are okay. But if it says "Bad Regurgitonic", destroy it and go get another Flask of Nitrates and redo the quest. Please stop posting about the Regurgitonic quest being broken, just cast that hardly-ever used spell called 'Identify'.
Get the Fish

Another way to get the fish corpse is to make a mule.

Best bet is to make a human sk starting in Qeynos. Camp your main near the water where the fish spawn, bring in your lowbie SK and harm touch to kill the fish. Bring in your main to loot the corpse.

Worked for me =)

But don't get greedy and try to kill both fish at the same time. Killing one fish causes the other to take on "Godly" abilities.

You have been warned!

Frostbite works; Regurgitonic is Broken
# Feb 13 2003 at 11:40 AM Rating: Decent
I've had the same trouble with Frostbite giving me my regurgitonic back. If he does that, you have to destroy that tonic and quest for a new one. I've had him refuse me about 1 out of 10 times. It sux to have to do all that running again but it does work.
Reguratonic works
# Jan 25 2003 at 9:32 AM Rating: Decent
The name of the dog is Frostbite, and a disreputable looking cur is he. However, he coughed up a fish in response to being given a Regurgatonic. In human form with the help of 'alliance' I was indifferent to him and his smelly barbarian friends.
Snowflake
# Jan 11 2003 at 1:17 AM Rating: Decent
I tried to run this quest again like I have done many times last night. Now Snowflake is giving the message "I don't need this..." and I keep getting the regurgitonic back. Thought it might have been because of the Patch and the fact that I had not actually downloaded it. I had actually run the quest ealier that day with no troubles.

Did a petition but that did not seem to help. So looks like Snowflake is broken again as of tonight.
RE: Snowflake
# Jan 24 2003 at 11:39 PM Rating: Decent
The dog's name is Frostbite not Snowflake. Could this be your problem?
RE: Snowflake
# Feb 08 2003 at 11:16 PM Rating: Decent
Actually yes, I got the name wrong. It is Frostbite and he is in West Karana. Got him confused with the wolf in Everfrost. I am going to try the quest again tonight and hopefully they have it fixed by now.

As a dark elf you can pretty much do this quest right away... but anyone else does not get 1: Illusion: Dark Elf untill 12. Also I did not have a MULE persey for the jumjum juice... but a full on alt to make it. I think if you were DE you have to wait untill about 8 to at least be a gnome or woodelf.... (please hope you chose agnostic) and I did te WHOLE quest, and last second I forgot to cast Alliance... so I was indiferent... He said something along the lines of "you have done well but should leave before we crush you" basically. I personally made a lvl 2 mule Shadowknight... (lvl 2 because the fish was taking too long to kill at lvl 1 and the guy would bash me, if you can have harm-touch ready and a bow helps to pull away from guard, if you can get one) in qeynos to kill the fish, there is NO way its worth the quest with the dog. Trust me. dont kill the dog, dont do the quest... just kill the fish.

its actually pretty easy but very detailed in something as small as neglecting to cast alliance.

BS. Even with PoP, and being bound in the most strategic area, using gate, with a level 50+ SoW, it takes MINIMUM 40 minutes...that's IF you have a bag full of honeycombs and kiola nuts already (like I do).
RE: easy now
# Jul 18 2003 at 3:22 AM Rating: Default
Exactly what I was thinking. You have to run into the middle of WK, which is a big, BIG, zone. That itself took my enchanter with an epic druid's (not sure the lvl, she was /anon) sow about 5 minutes to get to Frostbite. Not to mention the tedious illusioning/invising when doing the Ogguk hand in and doing the entire regurgitonic quest, which is the only sane way to do it if you are a good aligned char.
Lore means Lore

contrary to otium's post, just completed it w/ my 17 chanter. Clurg said the right things and I got my exp, but no second Stein. Portions can be done, but not to completion. Sad face.
PoP
# Nov 07 2002 at 2:18 AM Rating: Decent
With PoP this quest takes me about 20 - 30 minutes. First thing I did was go to the sister Isle and buy about 2 backpacks full of nuts. The next thing was to go to rivervale and scour the merchants for honeycombs. I also shouted out to the lowbies in the zone that i was buying them. I was able to get a few backpacks of them pretty quick. I bound myself at the south end of the PoK. From this point its just running around the PoK and gating. I've been selling mine on the Bristlebane server for about 200-300pp depending on how many others are being sold in the bazaar though I've seen them as low as 150 or so.
Koalindl Fish
# Sep 22 2002 at 11:37 AM Rating: Decent
I've done this quest several times without problem following the suggestions above. But now, Frostbite in WK politely tells me he doesn't need the regurgitonic and hands it back to me. No fish. Thinking the quest might have been updated so that owners of a mug can't do it, I handed my mug to a friend and tried again. Still got the "don't need" speech. I tried turning into a barbarian and using Benevolence - still nothing.

Sigh. Any ideas?

BTW, I know the mug is lore, but I've done this part of the quest before with one in my possession.

I've had problems with Frostbite lately as well. I keep trying back with him when I'm in the area, but he still just hands me back the regurgitonic. It's been two weeks now... kind of long for the dog to be broken.

I did the quest tonight, Oct. 31st, 2002, and the Regurgitonic worked just fine. The portals in Plane of Knowledge really help out in this quest. I think I did the whole thing, start to finish, in about an hour and a half. I was lucky enough to find honeycombs for sale at merchants, the rest was just running around and waiting for the boat to Sister Isle.

# Oct 11 2002 at 8:15 AM Rating: Decent
Maybe Frostbite was broken briefly. I fed him the Regurgitonic last night and got the fish. Worried in advance that faction had something to do with it ("I don't like you so I'm not going to puke for you" lol) I cast Alliance on him before giving him the tonic. I didn't notice any difference in faction though, so maybe he was just not being cooperative for one day.

Many players have the misconception that an enchanter of a "good" race must be agnostic to complete this quest. This is untrue, as i can now verify.

My enchanter is an Erudite, and a follower of Quellious, the Tranquil. This afternoon, i successfully completed the Stein quest. It may have helped that i waited until 20th level, as that gave me the benefit of three spells: Benevolence, Illusion: Ogre, and Sympathetic Aura.

NPCs will tend to be more inclined to deal with their own race, so looking like an ogre will be better than a dark elf. Benevolence has twice the faction adjustment of Alliance, which seems to compensate for the negative adjustment of following a deity that the ogres would hate. Finally, i threw in a Sympathetic Aura for a CHA boost, put on any CHA items i had, and got my CHA up to 134. Perhaps that made no difference, but i figured it couldn't hurt. :-)

Regarding the question of whether one should give Gregor the items one at a time to get the Bartender's Compendium: For the record, i gave Gregor (in Freeport) all four items at once, and he cheerfully handed over the Compendium.

At every step of the way during this quest, i always made sure to use an illusion to make myself the same race as the NPC i was dealing with, and also cast Benevolence for the faction adjustment. My faction with any NPC was never worse than Amiable.

Happy questing...

Finshed it as a 16 High Elf enchanter. Pretty much word for word from the guide, had no difficulties whatsoever except one.....crossing Kithcor to get to Rivervale. Remember, undead see thru invisbility. Safest way to do this is zone in to Kithcor, cast illusion Darkelf, then invis vs. undead. Pray that you have SoW and your invis vs undead holds up for the whole way across zone. I found it much easier to go straght across zone to Highpass, then around the sides of zone to Rivervale. Im gonna experiment with cutting thru Runnyeye citadel next time and see if it is any easier.

Here is a few added suggestions. Before starting the quest, bind at the Freeport docks. This saves some time. Go get the Kiola first, gate back, get a sow and haul tail thru the commons. Make sure you invis in WC, Kodiaks can be a problem. Go across Kithcor as I stated above. Reach Rivervale, get the honey jum. From here, go back to Highpass. Invis yourself again, at least till you get to the guards. (I stopped for a minute here to pick up my pet spells, some of which cannot be bought anywhere else to my knowledge, i.e. 12 and 16, possibly more.) Hopefully you will be able to get anopther SoW, cause next zone in to East Karana, to North Karana, West Karana (inivisibility the whole way recommended). Either Kill Frostbite in the SW corner of zone to get the fish, or continue on thru Qeynos Hills and North Qeynos. I got particularly lucky in finding a young Shadowknight to kill the Koalindl for me, so i didnt lose my faction. Other options are mules. I then proceeded thru South Qeynos to the docks, waited for boat, did the Erud part of it. Then, gate back, give the items to Gregor. Cast alliance on him, just in case. I gave him all at once in the order that he asked for them when giving out the quest. Voila, one Compendium! Next, get a Sow, Invis, and run to Ferrott. Straight south thru NRo, Oasis, Sro, and Innothule. Innothule was a breeze, just stick to the wall, invised if you are worried. At the entrance to Ferrott, put on Darkelf Illusion, just to be safe, invis, and hug the wall going right (north) you will eventually get to the entrance to Oggok. OPnce you zone into Oggok, check real quick to see if any ogres are aroun entrance, cast DE illusion again, invis again. Hang a left, follow grass till end. ( you will see the Tyrant. Once you enter the building at the end of the path, turn left again, then take the first left after that and follow the hall around. it ends in the bar with Clurg. Get next to Clurg, drop invis (hope you remembered to cast DE illusion, or you are a greasy spot!), /con him, cast alliance, and say what special book. If he answers favorably, give him the book, and you will become the proud owner of the Stein. Gate back, rinse, repeat if desired.

Took me about 4 hours, no trouble other than crossing Kithcor

Kithicor is no problem if you stick to the far edges of the zone. Get as high as you can, and never stop to look. I've gone through several times without trouble, including a night when a large guild was pulling General V'Ghera for the Rogue epic. Go around the north edge and it should not be a problem anymore, regardless of level.
Oh yeah!, forgot!

If you want to prevent trouble, avoid those wandering greenbloods in BB, you take a negative faction hit with Clurg for killin' em.
Killing fish
# Jul 28 2002 at 4:58 AM Rating: Default
Killing the fish in the pond will not result in you being attacked immediatly uppon getting out of the water. The faction hits are severe, but if you kill the fish in one blow (I prefer the use of a nuke spell such as Sanity Warp) they will not attack you unless the faction hits drop you into the KOS range.

I did this with a lvl 12 enchanter who worships Tunare. I used Illusion DE to get apprehensive with Clurg and Alliance to get Indifferent.

Please don't hand things to NPCs without talking to them first. Usually they will say something to indicate whether your faction is adequate.

In this case just /say what special book?

Clurg's reply will indicate whether your faction is good enough to proceed.

I have done this quest about 6 times now with my Agnostic Dark Elf Enchantress. yesterday I did the quest 3 times hehe! I got a bit frustrated with the fish at one point I had my lvl 1 human shadowknight kill 4 Kolindl fishs to get one no drop fish! (he is so KOS now hehe) respawn rate on swimming kolindl not too bad though, and SK is on a second account so I had my chantress buff him with enduring breath which helps alot! Also Clurg is now amiable and I have found that I no longer need to cast alliance on him to get the stein =) This quest is excellent and on Druzzil Ro I am selling the steins for 200pp ea which adds up.
Another note, since the boats are currently "bugged" there are translocator gnomes at docks. What I have been doing is getting a port to Toxx (dubious to druids at rings) casting erudite illusion, going in and getting the tonic and taking the T/L gnomes to qeynos. at eruds crossing the kitty on the dock is indifferent, and there are no guards at qeynos. But even without illusions at most places I am not KOS, but dubious... I sure hope the patch tomarrow morning doesn't fix the boats, those T/L gnomes ROCK!

I play a High Elf Enchanter. I started this quest at level 8 and gathered all the components. When I turned in the components for the Barkeeper's Compendium I ding'd 9. :)

I tried to use invisibility then minor illusion to get the stein with no luck; the Ogres in the bar smacked me as soon as I started casting minor illusion.

Once I got to 12, I scribed the Illusion: Dark Elf spell and headed back. As before, I used invisibility to get into Ogguk. Once inside and out of sight of any Ogres (make TRIPLE sure you are), I cast Illusion:Dark Elf, then invisibility for an extra measure of security. Once I was next to Clurg, I held my breath, crossed my fingers and toes, and dropped my invisibility spell. Woot! No reaction. I con'd Clurg, and he was dubious. I cast Alliance, con'd again, and he was indifferent. Gave him the compendium, and he gave me the stein. A quick and hasty Gate, and I was safe!

I'm a level 35 erudite mage. Do you think an Idea of getting good Faction with just clurg (I can do this easily By killing dimloe Stormhammer numourus of times) then get a druid casting wolf form on me, I cast a pet, Then get out of wolf form, hand book into clurg and let bouncers attack my pet and then quickly gate to somewhere safe. Any thoughts on if this idea will work?

Also, to get the koalndl, I created a Human Paladin. He started right next to the pond. I killed one, typed /q, signed back on with my chanty and looted the corpse. Flawless!

Enchanters get both Illusion Orge and Benevolence at level 20. My Eurdite Enchanter has done the Stein of Moggok many times and had no problems with Clurg or anyone else in Ogguk.

Level 1 Shadow Knights make excellent Koalindl killers. Because they can Harm Touch, they often can kill the fish more quickly than Paladins, Warriors, etc. I can camp and switch characters quickly enough that my Chanter usually has to wait a few seconds before the fish becomes lootable. (Not all Koalindl corpses carry the quest item you need. Be sure to check the timer on the corpse before switching to loot. Empty corpses will show less than 30 seconds on the timer.)

As an agnostic Wood Elf Bardess, I can do this quest in my natural form now. One week I got bored and did this quest 70 times (yes, I counted). I started out using my Guise of Deseption and Carrilion (faction song). Then just the mask, then just the song... Now, I just do the quest. I can't wander into any of the guilds (Warriors still hate me, and I can't figure out what faction the banker is on), but I can traverse the rest of the city at my leasure. Point being- you don't have to be a 'Chanter... a Bard or Rogue with the proper masks can do it just as easily. And besides... it's fun to scare the lowbie Ogres when a Wood Elf wanders into their city and the guard don't kill her. <w>
