Find Seneschal Aldikar in the throne room with Dain Frostreaver IV and hand him your Velium Coldain Insignia Ring (#8).

Seneschal Aldikar says, 'Well done _____, I have heard of your victory over the Ry'Gorr. If you are willing to assist the crown further please follow me.'

At this point he leads you out of the throne room and down to his private sleeping quarters.

Seneschal Aldikar says, 'Please, shut the door behind you. What I am about to share with you must not be overheard.'

Seneschal Aldikar says, 'My army stands prepared to launch an assault on Kael itself, but one task must be completed before this can happen.'

Seneschal Aldikar says, 'It seems Rodrick was not alone in his treachery. There is a faction of Coldain who believe that a treaty should be signed with the Kromrif, ending our hostilities with them. This, of course, is impossible. If there is one thing our history here has taught us it is that the Kromrif simply cannot be trusted.'

Seneschal Aldikar says, 'These traitors are poisoning the minds of our citizens, promising great rewards to those who will betray the Dain. It will take an unbiased eye of an outlander to flush out masterminds behind this plan. Once again we turn to you.'

Seneschal Aldikar says, 'Will you accept this task, outlander?'

You say, 'I will accept this task'

Seneschal Aldikar says, 'In this box, place the Accursed Dirk of the Fallen Rodrick. With it combine the heads of every traitor you dispose of. When this is done give the box and the Velium insignia ring to the Dain directly. On behalf of the crown and all good Coldain, I thank you.....May Brell be with you.'

Seneschal Aldikar says, 'Farewell'

You receive a Traitor's Bane Box, a 6-slot container in which you are to put Rodrick's Dagger and the heads of the Traitors.



Item #1: Dirk of the Traitor

Kill Rodrick Tardok in the Eastern Wastes. He drops the Dirk of the Traitor you seek.

He spawns in the small tower outside the northwest corner of the Ry`Gorr Keep. Every once in a while, a Ry`Gorr Emissary will spawn there. If you leave him alone for a few minutes, Rodrick will spawn inside the tower.



Item #2: Murdrick's Head

Kill Murdrick Tardok in the Great Divide (-5900, +3700 -- around the southwest edge of the zone, in the caves north-northwest of the zone-in to Velketor's Labyrinth.

Invis yourself and stand next to Murdrick. This will trigger a dialogue script between him and another Coldain. Listen to entire dialogue (it ends with Murdrick telling of his plan to make the Tainted Avalanche Ale). If you attack him before he finishes the dialogue, he'll despawn.

Murdrick Tardok says 'Good day my friends, it is good to see you all are alive and well.'

Davin Fatfist says 'Well, we are alive, but I'd hardly say we're well... We have heard of the death of Rodrick, and the Dain is calling on all citizens of Thurgadin to flush out any opposition to the throne. If we're tied to your dealings with the Kromrif we'll be sent to the bottom of the well for sure.'

Murdrick Tardok says 'The Dain knows nothing, and I have a plan to keep it that way. I have given the matter much thought, and I have gathered you all here to ask for your help.'

Gerton Dumkin says 'We all saw what happened when Rodrick agreed to help you. I, for one, am none too eager to take on these new friends of the Dain.'

Murdrick Tardok says 'Rodrick knew what he was getting into, and so did you. It's a bit too late for second thoughts. I don't recall seeing any hesitation when the loot was being passed around.'

Lapker Geynion says 'Go ahead Murdrick, what's this plan of yours?'

Murdrick Tardok says 'As I said I've thought long and hard of our situation and I feel we are indeed in danger. My cousin Berradin is a captain in the Dain's army. I've always been uneasy about him, but now more than ever. He could easily betray many of us and take credit for destroying the rebellion.'

Murdrick Tardok says 'My plan is to poison him and plant a suicide note on the body, a note in which he would take full responsibility for the actions of the rebels. This would both ensure that he could never betray us and would give the Dain closure. We will be free to continue working with our Kromrif friends without fear of discovery.'

Davin Fatfist says 'Sounds good boss, but how do you plan on poisoning him?'

Murdrick Tardok says 'Berradin has a weakness for drink, one drink in particular... Avalanche Ale. I have had the recipe altered slightly to include a deadly poison. I have much to do, I need one of you to brew the drink and bring it to me. I'll handle the rest.'

Gerton Dumkin chuckles, 'Once again, Murdrick, you've put us at ease in the middle of a treacherous predicament. I will volunteer to brew the drink.

Murdrick Tardok smiles, 'Very well, take this recipe and follow it exactly. It won't be easy, but you'll be richly rewarded for your efforts I assure you. Send word to meet me back here when you are finished.

Gerton Dumkin says 'Consider it done. Be sure to watch yourself Murd, the Dain's gotta be suspicious of ya, being Rodrick's brother and all. And those outlander friends of his are dangerous, chopped down the Ry`Gorr chief like he was nothin!'

Once attacked, Murdrick calls for help from all the mobs in the room (harmony/lull spells will not get around this).

Loot Murdrick's Head and Murdrick's Plan, a note which contains the recipe for tainted avalanche ale.



Item #3: Berradin's Head

Make a Tainted Avalanche Ale (brewing trivial 248):
- Bottle
- An iceball
- Ice Wyvren Stinger
- Artic Mussels
- Seahorse Scales
- Runed Seashell (Cloud)
- Vial of Mind Melt

Hand this to Captain Berradin in the Eastern Wastes.

Captain Berradin says 'You gotta be kiddin me, Avalanche Ale? Haven't had a bottle a this stuff in ages. Brell bless you, ______! Glug, glug, glug...'
Captain Berradin says 'Uhhh... I'm not feeling so good. Someone call for a cleric.'
Auto attack is on.
Captain Berradin shouts 'Yer messin with the wrong Coldain, prepare ta meet yer ancestors!'

All of his bodyguards say the same thing and attack. Kill him after he falls down. His bodyguards WILL help him. Harmony pull works best. Loot his head and the Note to Peffin.



Item #4: Peffin's Head

Peffin Ambersnow is located in the giant fort in the Eastern Wastes. She is invisible.

You say, 'Hail, Peffin Ambersnow'

Peffin Ambersnow gasps in astonishment, 'Oh, I uh... err, hello there. Umm, thank Brelll you're here, those bloody Kromrif were going to torture me! Yes, yes, and you've saved me! How can I ever repay you?

Hand her the "Note to Peffin".

Peffin Ambersnow yells for assistance

At this point, she respawns outside, surrounded by Kromrif Elite guards. In addition to being permarooted in the middle of her giant buddies, she is also very magic/cold/fire resistant. At level 60, I got 100% resists out of 20 or so casts (Bard chants).

You need to be quick killing her, she despawns after about 7 minutes along with all the rooted guards... the non-rooted ones do not depop. Each one says:


Kromrif Elite says 'Regardless of allegiance, no outlanders are welcome here now!'

They see invis and are 51+. Peffin will be standing right in front of the fire at the bottom of the hill. She has five giant guards, all 51+ and rooted. Kill Peffin and loot her head along with a note to Doldigun.



Item #5: Doldigun's Head

Doldigun Steinwielder is located in Iceshard Manor in Kael Drakkel (location -850, +1150). He can be spawned by saying "The Dain shall be slain for the peace we must obtain." Hand him the note and receive in return "Ring of the Coldain Council".

If you attack him, he runs and two guards show up. Several giants will spawn (perhaps two at a time).

Doldigun respawns as the giant named Valorankt Zekkin dies. He comes in from the door on the north side of the throne, which is the same door that Doldigun attempts to flee out of.

You have slain Valorankt Zekkin!

Valorankt Zekkin's corpse shouts Doldigun, you have caused us too much trouble. You are no longer welcome here! Show yourself!"

"Doldigun Steinwielder says 'Uhh, I think I'll be leaving now... Give my regards to Thurgadin."

Aggro him quickly, kill him and loot the head.

*** Note: He does not seem to spawn if the giants are up ***



Item #6: Juliah's Head

Find Councilor Juliah Lockheart in Icewell Keep at approximate location +540, -25, 65 (in Dain Frostreaver IV's room -- she is the councilman on the far left as you face the council (facing away from Dain), in the front row).

Hand her the ring from Doldigun.

Councilor Juliah Lockheart says, "FOOL! You've ruined everything!"

Councilor Juliah Lockheart says, "You'll pay with your life for meddling in the affairs of others!"

She respawns and attacks, hitting for a max 350. The other Coldain do not aggro. Kill her and loot the head.



Final Combine and Hand-In

In the Traitor's Bane Box, combine the five heads along with the Dirk of the Traitor. This produces a Box of the Guilty. Take this and the 8th ring (Velium Coldain Insigna Ring) to the Dain in Icewell Keep.

Dain Frostreaver IV says 'The people of Thurgadin are in your debt, ______. Please accept the Coldain Hero's Ring as a token of our gratitude. The curse has been removed from the blade as well. I hope you find it useful against our common foes. When you are interested in assisting me further please show me the blade. Until that day, may Brell bless and protect you.'

The Peffin turnin/script appears to be bugged in picks so I recommend not trying it in picks. Petitioning to return items due to busted script/turnin also was unsuccessful.

The description above states that those who are doing this quest should "hand Juliah Lockheart her ring." That ring is now called "Ring of the Coldain Council." Also, Juliah's location is not given in the description. She is located at 542.67, -26.19, 65.1 She is in the Dain Frostreaver IV's room, and she is the councilman on the far left as you face the council (facing away from Dain), in the front row.

Hand her the ring first, she despawns then instant reappears then attacks.

Also, when working on the obtaining the head from Doldigun Steinwielder, the last giant to be fought is Valorankt Zekkin. Doldigun respawns just as Valorankt Zekkin dies.

He comes in from the door on the north side of the throne, which is the same door that Doldigun attempts to flee out of.

I simply had my pet finish off Valorankt, then kept clicking on my "cycle through nearest NPCs" key (which can be set with the Options function, "keys" tab, "target" category from the drop down menu) and the pet attack command.
Yes, since Valorankt was the only NPC visible at the time, I got a lot of "Attacking Valorankt Zekkin, Master" spam, but it was effecting in nailing Doldigun as the little bugger appeared.

As my pet was near the door when it finished off Valorankt Zekkin, he was in the perfect place to meet Doldigun as he respawned and headed for the door. I positioned myself so that the throne and the door were in plain view, so that "Cycle through nearest NPCs" key would target him just as he appeared, and the pet would tag him before he got away.

As Valorankt dies, "Valorankt Zekkin's corpse shouts Doldigun, you have caused us too much trouble. You are no longer welcome here! Show yourself!"
"Doldigun Steinwielder says 'Uhh, I think I'll be leaving now... Give my regards to Thurgadin."

By the way, if his resists are as high as reputed, it didn't show when I fought him. But my nukes are Chromatic, and they landed just fine.

I realize it is only up for 1 month a year, but if anyone was wondering, you can indeed do the ring 9 hand in to the Fabled version of Dain Frostreaver and he will give you ring 9 just like the normal version.

Last night and this morning I soloed for the 5 heads. Have to find Rodrick up sometime soon here as over the past two years I ended up destroying Rodrick's Dagger from my bank to make room. :P

70th War c/Time & Qvic gear 570AAs
Only self buffs used for all this.

I Frequently used Worker Sledgemallet to escape after looting what I needed to loot and ***** the rest of the mobs that I did not need to kill.
Peffin & Doldigun are the only ones where I came close to dieing on. Everything else was a cakewalk. Got down to 15% on the Peffin fight and 30% on the Doldigun fight before the Sledg proc'd.

I plan on having at least 2 grps of friends & guildies for the 10th War when I do it soon here.
I really don't have a bearing for how much force I really need now days. Gear is not an issue these days for this, my concern would be what force to have to deal with the numbers of each wave of Giants. Will ask around what others think and post something here when I have done it.

Yeah have see invis head, she ended up being on the top corner of the wall around the fort for some reason instead of in the room.

Maybe this is obvious, but I thought I'd share anyway as a warning:

Dain will eat the box and your ring if you attempt the final turn-in for the 9th ring while KoS (ready to attack). "You have yet to prove yerself worthy of speaking with the Dain". I attempted it because I WAS able to get the 6-slot combine box from Seneschal Aldikar while KoS to him (by saying the magic words right after dropping invis). So perhaps dubious is the minimum faction requirement.

Dain sees invis and I am not a class who can FD or sneak. So the way I did the hand-in to Dain without agro was to shrink and wait underneath his throne platform until he came out of his back bedroom. This allowed me to get within turn-in distance while staying out of line-of-sight of the Dain-faction NPCs. No KoS agro that way! However since he ate my quest items, it didn't really do any good ;)

Well I'm off to re-quest up to the 8th ring, since you don't need Dain faction until the 9th.

All you have to do is get her outside the fort, i did this by harmony all but one of Berradin's guard and taggin one, simply cause i am not sure if you argo her you get the giants, but in any case, drug him there, to the fort and she agroed without her giant friends, got outside the fort and rooted her, camped and came back, she is still in place, handed in note. Invised up, walked left wall away from the see invis mobs, targeted Peffin and bowed her to death, i was at 95% health at that time. Then being a Ranger, hit Weaponshield, ran up, looted body, and see ya later, innate camo out. Lost all of 5% health on this. It could probably be easier if you can target her, shoot her and the guards not agro, innate camo up and get outta fort. but again, not sure if the giants will agro if you shoot her.

In response to the last question I was ally to coldains but still dubious to Dain and his entourage and did the turn in no problems.

Also I have heard in other posts that the manor in Kael cannot be duoed and I agree but it was very doable with 3. Do not try without a healer.

With a 61 Paladin(me), 65 Beast and his 60 druid bot his bot had 20% mana after the last nasty giant in Kael. That one is unslowable (about 15 attempts) maybe with tash. or malo. but not by 65 beast slows under normal circumstances. Also I tried to root him with greater immobilize a few times when the druid bot got agro and he resisted all. He has insane regen and hps so put it on him fast and hard and save a big bang for the end because he ran at 8% and it still took a while to bring him down. I smelled big train but we dropped him. Also the giants pop two at a time until the last giant that I mentioned.

Last note and I learned this the hard way is when the last giant drops don't sit back and congratulate yourself too long because the dwarf repops and bails out quick. He hits like a 12 year old vegetarian so if you can take the gaint he should be easy.

Note on a part of the traitor in Eastern Wastes the one that you give the tainted avalanche ale to.

I didn't wait the full time I attacked him when he grabbed his chest and pulled him and killed him almost and he despawned or gated at about 5%. I thought man I screwed up bad but he had respawned in the hut again and I pulled him again and killed him. Got the head. I think I got very lucky.

what faction do you need for turn in? i skipped to the 8th ring, my friend MQed it for me. i am currently dubious to Dain.. what faction do i need for the 9th ring turn in?

One of my characters MQed the 8th ring and had no Dain faction work under his belt; turn-in for 9th ring was successful at dubious.
Soloing 9th ring

So far I've soloed the first 8 rings, and 9th ring fights up to the Kael fight. I'm going to go sploring there this weekend. Here's what I've done so far with 65 Necro and wouldn't have been able to do it without pet hold:

Rodrick: Easy if he's up. Skipping that one.

Murdrick: Pull with snare and FD when friends get close. Let them walk back. Unfortunately since the Dx9.0 push his friends like to warp on top of me so that added to the hardship. Keep standing up to reaggro him and slowly work your way out of the tunnel until 1) you are tired of snaring, or 2) you are tired of FDing and recasting Force Shield. I noticed Murdrick doesn't like to walk back to join his friends, so he'll hang around outside his tunnel. Unfortunately his friends would come to his rescue no matter where he was when I attacked, but I got lucky and go him alone once. He's snareable and fearable

Captain Berradin: Same set-up as Murdrick. Pull with snare, and run away from the camp. FD and wait for bodyguards to return to hut. Stand up, reaggro, resnare, fear, send pet, loot. Don't bother trying to clear the bodyguards before doing this. They have <5min respawn time and there's 4 of them. Heed the posts below about timing on him. Hand him ale and wait. He'll do a little dance as the poison kicks in. Shortly thereafter he'll fall to the ground (the respawned version with the head you need) and call for a cleric. I sent him a spectre pet instead. /shrug

Peffin: Had to do this one twice, yuck. Set up pet behind the campfire and /pet guard and /pet hold. Go into the hut and hand Peffin the note. She'll run out of the building as her 3 guards pop inside the building. Run out of the building and FD to clear their aggro. When they return to their spawns head to the camp fire. Get on the side away from the giants and target Peffin. The only spells I used were Saryn's Kiss and Force Shield. She shoots for 70-90 and fairly rapidly. There were lulls in the damage she was doing to me, so not sure if that's because of the large campfire I kept between us, or if she was running of arrows. Anyway, nothing else but Saryn's Kiss landed on her and even that got resisted from time to time. After she died I had to run in the middle of the 5 permarooted giants to loot her body which was nasty. After that I just sent in the pet to kill off the giants. They didn't even attack the pet as I had aggro. Riskless XP.

Doubt seriously there's a whole lot of necros out there doing this quest, but that info may give the rest of you some ideas on how these fights can be done.

You gotta be kidding! A item that is clicky regen!?!?! COURSE I am doing it =P Just wanted to let everyoen know...I wanted to have to do this ONCE and ONLY once so I got a few friend for puffin and buffed a LOT and got all gtg and killed off a couple various wandering giants... and then puffin depopped. =( Just a warning out there to everyone... she WILL depop if you wait too long.

Ya, this just happened to me. Got a response from a GM within 5 minutes. Said its known, and they are working on it and should be fixed in the near future. Oh well, looks like Im waiting!

Not to be mean but...how much do you play?!!?! I mean, 1 lvl 65 character isn't easy, but 6?! omg, you must play EQ for a living!! I'm a casual player and I'm only 56, although I'll be 65 by the end of summer (no school! yay!). But seriously bud, how much do ya play?

I have the 5 heads and the knife in my Traitor's Bane Box and when I hit combine nothing happens. I mean nothing. No text no confirmation. No error. Nothing. When I pit Rod's head in the box instead of cousin Merd I get the 'Can't combine these items' message. Can anyone lend a suggestion?

This is a known bug as of today; people have been reporting similar problems with other special/quest containers. Expect this to be fixed in the near future, but hang onto those items for now.

SOE has yet to make a statement about it that I have seen, in game, in a message or on EQLive. Brenlo stated yesterday that we should make sure we're not trying to add it to the new TS UI /rolleyes.

Have you seen a comment by them that I haven't? This is currently affecting a LOT of quests.

I have made a petition the last three nights and I have yet to hear a word from a GM. I guess its not to big a deal as the Dain willnot be up for another 2 or 3 days. But I sure do want my ring. This has taken alot of hard work and time rto get this far.

I did not take the time to read every post here, so if my link is duplicated I apologize. Some of the info here I did read is wrong. Go to http://www.monkly-business.com/articles2.asp?ArticleNum=108 and there is an excellent walkthrough. The page will also lead you to an excellent walkthrough of the first 8 rings. I did the first 8 in one short day solo as a 65 beastlord with no problems at all.

If you don't bother to check the link, I only have one thing to say that will help with any confusion and possible mess ups. DON'T give your ring to the guy when you want to start the quest. Keep it, and only say the text "I will accept this task" or whatever the trigger text is. That way you can keep your ring in case you stop doing the head quest.
