You must do the Investigator's Badge Quest before doing this one. Before you go on with this one, be sure to get an extra unsigned confession off 'an investigator'.

You say, 'Hail, Vegalys Keldrane'

Vegalys Keldrane says 'Greetings to you, citizen. By order of the Council of Qeynos I have been given the duty of apprehending the individuals [responsible] for unleashing this terrible plague upon the people and the lands of Antonius Bayle. The more I look into this matter, the more I come to find that this will be no easy task.

You say, 'How can I advance further?'

Vegalys Keldrane says 'Interested in advancing further are you? Excellent, we are ready to begin the next phase of our operation. We have gathered a great deal of information as a result of the latest series of arrests. What we require most now are [interrogators] that are able to pry the information we require out those less then willing to talk.

You say, 'What interrogators?'

Vegalys Keldrane says 'If you are interested in joining the ranks of our interrogators and helping Qeynos further as we bring these fiends and murderers to justice, turn in your investigator's Badge and I will give you the briefing document you need. I already know I can trust my investigator's, so there is no need to further test you.

Vegalys Keldrane says 'Very well, here is the briefing document. Please read it very carefully. I wish you luck friend, this mission could prove to be dangerous.

The document leads you to an interrogator in South Karana.

You say, 'Hail, an interrogator'

an interrogator says 'I see you wish to become an interrogator. This is not a duty for the weak of heart you know. This job sometimes requires. .. an interrogator coughs, 'a little muscle I guess you would say.'

an interrogator says 'Nevertheless, we have an important job to do. There is a man by the name of Theodore Exanthem who is a known member of the Bloodsaber cult. He fled from Qeynos some time ago and we have been hot on his tail ever since.

an interrogator says 'We have tracked this man down and we now know his whereabouts. However, we have bigger fish to fry today then just this low life. Theodore knows the location of two other individuals also suspected of hiding out here in the plains.

an interrogator says 'Sadly, these fiends were the two that slipped into Surefall Glade and poisoned the waters there. Though the druids were able to quickly combine their efforts and neutralize the toxins with their magicks, grievous damage was done none the less. Two of the great protectors of the hills and the glade, Holly Windstalker and Cros Treewind, became seriously ill as did one of the glade's sacred bears.

an interrogator says 'Holly and Cros, sickened as they were, removed themselves from the Hills to weather out their illness and to keep the disease from spreading further. During their absence, the Bloodsabers were easily able to traffic in the materials needed to complete their terrible work.

an interrogator shakes his head sadly and says, 'Tragically, Cros Treewind was attacked by one of the sacred bears which was maddened by its illness. In his weakened state Cros was unable to defend himself and was killed by this defiled grizzly, one of the very creatures he was sworn to protect.'

an interrogator says 'So our goal is to pry the information we need from Theodore Exanthem so that we may bring these two fugitives to justice. After getting him to comply, you are to collect a confession from Theodore and have him lead us to the two fugitives. Give me Theodore's confession and the heads of these two fugitives and you shall have your badge.

an interrogator says 'I believe I know where we can find him. Follow me please.'

Follow the interrogator.

an interrogator says 'Theodore Exanthem by order of the Council of Qeynos and his lordship Antonius Bayle, I order you to come out of there immediately!

an interrogator says 'Theodore Exanthem, you will [take us to the location] of Marcus Cachexia and Morley Murrain immediately.

Theodore Exanthem says 'I think you've been breathing the air in the Northern Plains of Karana for too long. I will most certainly not tell you anything about their whereabouts, much less lead you right to them. You are not right in the head.

an interrogator says 'Vile beast! You are withholding information on two men guilty of terrible atrocities, not the least of which was causing the death of one of Qeynos' most respected and well known citizens, Cros Treewind! As an Interrogator I am authorized to use physical force if necessary.

Theodore Exanthem says 'What a joke! I'm not telling you a thing. You don't look like you could scare a moss snake. I'm not afraid of you!

You say, 'Take us to the location'

Theodore Exanthem reels back, his eyes wide with shock. Ow, he says nervously.

an interrogator says '[Take us to the location] of Markus Cachexia and Morley Murrain!

You say, 'Take us to the location'

Theodore Exanthem winces and says, Oh. Yeah right. Like I'm afraid of that moron or something. Theodore glances nervously over at you.

an interrogator says 'Take us to Markus Chachexia and Morley Murrain this instant or I'll turn you over to my friend here who appears to be much stronger then I am!

an interrogator smiles and says, 'Well, I'm getting tired. Why don't you hit him for a while. Maybe you will be more convincing then I have been.'

Attack him one time without a weapon. After a short time, he'll respond.

Theodore Exanthem says 'Sweet father of rot, alright already! Stop hitting me and tell me what you want me to do!

Give him the unsigned confession document you got from the investigator. (This step may no longer be valid, I was unable to get a confession document from an interrogator but received a signed document once arriving at the abandoned druid ring)

an interrogator says '[Take us to the location] of Markus Cachexia and Morley Murrain!'

You say, 'Take us to the location'

Theodore Exanthem says 'Fine follow me creeps.

At this point you follow Theodore Exanthem to the south to the abandoned druid ring. The culprits spawn along with some skeletal servants and ghouls. They are Morley Murrain and Markus Chachexia.

Theodore Exanthem says 'There... They are hiding out just down the hill here... Now release me!'

An interrogator says 'Not so fast. If you want your freedom back, sign this confession immediately.'

Theodore Exanthem makes a big X at the bottom of the document and hands it back saying, 'A bunch of worthless thugs is all you folks are!' (Note a signed confession appeared on my cursor)

An interrogator says 'You are on your own for now, Elina. You know what to do -- return to me when the deed is done.

Markus Cachexia says 'Undead legions assist me!'

Bring back their heads along with the signed confession to an interrogator at the tree where you first found him. (Note about a 12 minute spawn)

an interrogator says 'Excellent work, you did just fine today. You'll make a fine interrogator. Talk to Vegalys about advancing further.

You receive your Interrogator's Badge.

the following post is for the investigators badge and i posted under the wrong portion of the quest. Read it if you want, a little late, but then i read all the different quest posts before i ran the quests themselves
suggestions

this is a good quest, and depending on your level, it seems to be fairly easy, but then i am a lvl 55 druid. The biggest part of this portion of the quest is whether you are kos to the corrupt guard faction. If you are you might try going wolf/bear form as qeynos is the only city i know where i can run around in as a wolf and I did so since form of the howler does give a mana regen. My buddy, Blayda Winterhawk, ran around in bear form watching me perform this first step of the quest, that and he knew Qeynos much better than I, and helped me get to the locations necessary to obtain confessions.

I must say that reading the player comments helped immensely. I have but one suggestion.

It is suggested to just go ahead and kill Donally Stultz and obtain his head without asking the investigator for an unsigned confession. This is somewhat in error as the second stage of this quest (interrogator's badge) requires the use of one unsigned confession. My suggestion is to ask the investigator for the unsigned confession, Do NOT give Donally the unsigned confession rather just put it in your inventory for the next stage of the quest. Now you can attack Donally, kill him, and loot his head.

I guess I do have one other suggestion and that concerns the investigator. As was posted earlier, he has a tendency to keep moving around and has lousy pathing. Use the pet command /pet guard here to stop him from moving around when talking with each suspect. When getting ready to kill Donally Stultz, make sure you park the investigator outside of your aggro range and Donally's aggro range unless you need him to fight your battle. Unfortunately, Donally can and will kill the investigator. When the investigator dies, he despawns and it seems to take a while for him to repop (maybe an hour). If you have to wait to turn in the 2 signed confessions and the head, it is all well and good but remember that when you do turn in the items the investigator despawns again and there might be someone else wanting to do this quest..Happened to my son and i am afraid another player had to wait for the investigator to pop again.

Hail, fellow Investigators! I've been banging my head against this bug-ridden quest for about four days now, and thought I'd share my discoveries with you. Now, to kick this quest off, you will need to turn in your old badge. If you ***** ANYthing up later, you will NOT be recieving your old badge back. Please bear that in mind.

After turning in my badge for the Interrogator's Manual, it was off to SK. He was nowhere to be found until I camped - as soon as I reentered Norrath, my Tracking guildie saw him pop. Before giving him the Manual, be sure to /shout your intentions. If anyone decides to loot one of the heads, or kill the suspect that pops in the hermit house, you are SCREWED. Back to step 1 for you.

After Teddy is called out by the Interrogator, and you slap him around, he'll lead you to the abandoned druid ring next to the hermit's shack. You may not see the Summoned Minions and Wraiths, but there ARE there. I brought a friend for this step - he kited the undead around while I smacked Morley and Markus down. They're in their 30s.

The first time I did this, someone took it upon themselves to loot one of the NoDrop heads, then refused to come forth and MultiQuest the damned thing with me. Sigh. After redoing the first part, turning in my badge for the Manual, and heading back, I was unable to find the Interrogator at his usual spawn point. Instead, he was exactly where I'd left him, on the hill looking down on the druid ring ruin. This was after logging a couple times, AND redoing the 1st part.

Good luck on this quest... you'll need it!

Go back to the investigator under the tree in South Qeynos and get a confession document from him before setting out to SK. I don't know why it's not included in the text of the quest, because Vegalys clearly stated to me that I needed to get a confession document from an Investigator.

Interrogater is sitting at N4320, N3524 ish. As a Ranger I can pick him up fairly easily but if you don't have the wonders of tracking you should see him from this loc.

An Enchanter and Druid has been doing these quests with me and we've discovered that the people for these quests arn't Nice enough to spawn imediatly. havn't checked spawn time but it seems to be random.

I've finished my researcher badge easily, killed the rat lady walking to Qeynos. Cancel magic on her first since she has a cold skin thingy on. and watch out for her fearing.

In case anyone is looking for the interrogator in South Karana, he spawns at the following loc

-4300;-3500

#Anonymous, Posted: Aug 21 2001 at 10:07 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Just for interest my 40th Ranger and my mates 47th Druid did this sheila (in fact we did the whole 3 quests together). I took out the pet, (a.k.a 'jumped her bones' get it? huh huh well did ya?) while he kited her, then I caught up with her and gave her a slapping. She fears naturally which can be a bugger.
Info about THIS quest

For those of you reading down here for hints about THIS part of the quest instead of the third part the only real hints:

The interrogator spawns in SK due east of the Hermit's cottage by a tree next to the zone "cliff".

Go ahead and give Theodore the confession document when you get to the top of the hill over-looking the druid ring.

The two guys are nastier than people let on. They were green to me at 37, but the necro nukes for 150 and will happily snare you and fear kite you... as well the SK has a nasty harm touch and ahs no qualms about doing the same thing. In addition BOTH of these guys can and will summon over 20 pets each! As a bard I died in my first attempt thinking I could just melee these two greenies. Luckily everyone was still up by the time I got back and was able to get my corpse away from them.... they give you plenty of time to kill these two guys. I ended up kiting the necro and his horde of undead around until he ran out of mana (the old kite until have dead then lose them for a time trick) and then just chant kited him.... the SK was easier... just a straight chant kite. The 40+ skeletons and wraiths that were left over I just left to wander about the zone.
3rd Stage

I did the third part today myself. I messed up first time and gave jar to one of the rats, doh! I'm a gnome and didn't see the "tiles", they are like shadowmen, only see thier name. I redid whole thing from the start, took about 4 hours. But I took some shortcuts like killed shilster and the gnome in wk on same trip to quenos to start it. And remembered to ask for confession document from investigator BEFORE I handed in the signed ones, so don't have to wait for repop.

Anyways, the pattern of the rats is definatly different both times i did it! You only have 6 "standard norrathian hours" to solve the puzzle. Thats about 20 minutes.

Its kind of confusing to look at the pattern from the ground, you are much better off diagramming whatever pattern they appear in on paper and solveing it before actually trying. The instructions hint at writing it out first too, say to use X for diseased and O for clean.

If you've ever played the game Othello or Reversi, its the same concept. You souround you oppenent and capture the ones in a straight line. Except in this game it doesn't work diagnol, and you can only put your pieces in certain spots.

This quest really did require some thought, really impressed. Kudos to quest team! Do more like this.

Oh, when I messed up the first time, I put the jars in spots I KNEW were wrong and still got empty jars back. Apparently when you turn in the three empty jars, it will then check that all the rats are cured before gives you the Badge. I assumed if some diseased ones still up will say test was a failure, but seriously doubt if will give Interrogators badge back, so save some heartache and work it out on paper and be sure.

Result is a rather nice item:

Researcher's Badge
AC 4 Wis 3 int 3 Agi 3 Str 3 Mana 15 HP 15
NECK LORE MAGIC NO DROP ALL/ALL

I replaced my goblin soulcaller as standard wear, which is 5 wis 10 magic. And actually 3 wis/15 mana is about the same for my level, maybe little less, but str is worth it since I carry a couple bags of resist gear around. Very pleased with item here! :)

He doesn't allude to there ever being a forth part like the other quests ended in. Wasn't any "try back at later date". But I got a feeling the next Qeynos newspaper will say something like "all researchers should report to NewNPC_00 for additional testing" or something along those lines. Rumours on main board were that this item will eventually have clickable effects, so get yours now!

As for the gnome in wk, if having trouble tracking her, try using sense summoned or sense undead, can lock onto her pet. Only two summoned things in most of WK. And if along north wall will get the gnome. Also hang around choon and broon or whoever, she will fight them. I attacked while choon was already on her pet, so kept him out of fight. Of course he jumped us when pet finally died. She also will depop when gets between Ogre camp and NK zone, saw it with my own eyes, got loc in log file. She pops again in 2-3 minutes at far west side of zone, around corrupt guard tower, and walks east along north wall. Same path as Ghoul Messenger (killed him on way too). Will know when she up, because she talks trash in zone.

I am convinced a 49 cleric cannot solo her, can get really really close, but I had to zone three times before getting some friends (Thanks ZShaaka and Gallana! Also thanks to Utamr, Airanwen and Thiengy of The Kindred Soul for helping the first time around). Was no contest with group, complety crushed her. She is level 40. Only spell I noticed cast was fear which was resisted everytime. No dots or engulf, however we were still fully buffed for necro battle. PR DR MR

Good luck, maybe together we can rid the land of this vile plague.

4th Badge?
# Aug 18 2001 at 12:31 AM Rating: Decent
In lack of another place to put this....

Have anyone noticed any clue of how to trigger the quest for the 4th badge if there is/will be any? I mean regardless of whether the quest is live or not there should be some clue to trigger it.

I take it for granted there will be a 4th and even more badges since this is absolutely one of the best quests in the game (I dont mean the reward).

btw. these quests are so fun I even decided to do the 3rd badge without reading the spoiler of how to do it. Ok so I screwed up and had to do all badges again to finally get the 3rd one, but I dont mind.

Yes, she spawns in the triangle formed by the Barb village, the Millers farmland and Guard Tower nr 2 (the second one along the road to NK, not the one with the corrupt guard Mccluskey in it)That's where I always found her. From there she quietly walks with her pet towards the NK zone, and despawns there, to respawn again about 90 seconds later near the Qeynos Hills zone again, in that triangle.

Finished !

I also could not get this spawn "trigger" point to work. And I am a pet class, and tried to use the little trick. However, the pet points at the buildings everytime (where the NPC merchants are located).

Finally had a druid guildmate come out and help with tracking. Ran around the zone with SoW and eventually found her over by the western side of zone, heading east towards the farmland. Pet tanked while we nuked, no problems. Did the game, it was fun (I'm an old Zelda fan, where little puzzle games were the norm).

My puzzle looked like this:

_xx_
x_x_

o___

Good luck everyone. :)

He, sorry I laughaed at ya, Reatsel, She does indeed seem to be a timed spawn. Went back there, and saw a Bard, who had not a clue about the Quest(but apparently just kills everything blue in sight)trying to kill her. Bard was red to my 46, but she *hardly* dented her with melee, she missed a lot, and hit for 17-22 points damage. Also the necro had nasty damageshield up, the bard said. Anyway, the bard lost her out of sight(they had feared eachother a bit too much)but still had her on tracking. After a while she despawned. I was looking around at the supposed triggerspot again, and about a minute later I heard Biddilets shout again. Now I wanted to be sure: I tracked her, and followed her from the Qeynos end of the zone to the NK end of the zone, taking about 10-15 minutes walk Real time. There she despawned, and I pushed my chrono. 90 seconds later I heard her shout again......

So, she seems to be on a timer all right, about 15 minutes real time. ANd during the walk through WK she refreshed "Shrieking AUra" (damageshield) twice, so she is a *bad* mob to melee, also because she hits so darn hard, and has major hitpoints.(well, about those of a Hill giant, maybe a bit more, which is rather much for a caster)

AGain, sorry about my presumptous manner, Raetsel.

I don't care about the gnome.... that's not the hard part, what i dont get is the lil "game" we play with the rats, how in the world do you do that??
Triggered, for sure
# Aug 16 2001 at 12:53 AM Rating: Default
Haha, Raetsel, well, you can wait for her for 60 minutes, as Reatsel is suggesting, or you could go to the location I described below (loc +802 -4289) and trigger her spawn. The best way to do this, is with the old Pet trick many of us used in the 4th shawl quest. Go to that location(it is near the second batch of Merchanthouses from the Qeynos Hills entrance, summon a pet, or charm a bear, then tell the pet to "/pet guard here" The pet will immediately face the nearest mob/trap/SPAWNTRIGGER. Then walk in a straight line from your pet to where he is facing and you'll hear Biddilets shout; "what a nicely diseased place this is, tralala, tralalie".

Credits go to Yubby, whom I helped with his quest, after I had done my own. He suggested the trick when we could not immediately find her triggerspawn, and about 30 seconds later we had her triggered through the old trick. In the 2 hours before, she spawned twice, both when I was at that same location. FIrst time pure luck, I was scanning the zone strategically(she NEVER was on track before I heard her do the SHout, at any given time), second time I went back there because I had a hunch I triggered her. And yes, there she was again(the SHout). Third time was with Yubby, and that one really convinced me. There was no mob around, the pet faced something unseen immediately, and we triggered her 3 seconds later, when we walked the line from the pets nose. SHe spawns not near btw, she spawns near the barb village, about half way there from where you triggered her. When you are near the guard tower that you can see from that first batch of merchant houses (nr 2 I think) you can prolly see her on track already.

What we didnt try was to get her spawntrigger targeted, in all the exitement we went right for her. So I would suggest people try the trick at that location, then do the old summon food, and try to "give" it to the spawntrigger trick.

SO she spawned thrice in less then three hours. Anyway, you can wait forever, or you can try to spawn her. Somehow the second seems more fun. ;)

"SO she spawned thrice in less then three hours. Anyway, you can wait forever, or you can try to spawn her. Somehow the second seems more fun. ;)"

hmm now tell me, whats the huge difference? if she is a 60minutes spawn you will see her twice in 120minutes, if not you were .. lucky.. to see her twice in less than 180minutes.. think about it

so long,

Hey, I told you, you were right! In the post above this one ;)

She is timed all right. Only every 15 minutes or so, not every hour(see above). Unless a Norrath hour = 15 minutes real time. Could be, dunno ;). Anyways, she is not triggered, but timed, like you said. Did you get yer badge yet?

Cheers!

I hope Verant will put in more quests like this.

We had hoped to use rats to spread the cure, much in the same way they often spread disease.
[Wed Aug 15 17:39:36 2001] You say, 'How is it volatile?'
[Wed Aug 15 17:39:36 2001] Velarte Selire says 'Yes, the enchantment we placed on the rodents does not last long at all. It disperses its curing magic almost instantly. We fashioned several containers at great expense and they have the ability to preserve an enchantment for long periods of time. After enchanting a rat we [place them in the container] until we are ready to conduct our tests.
[Wed Aug 15 17:40:00 2001] You say, 'How do you place them in the container?'
[Wed Aug 15 17:40:00 2001] Velarte Selire says 'Oh, I assure you it is completely humane and the rats do seem to enjoy prolonged exposure to the enchantment while in the container. In fact, it is all we can do to get them out of the containers once we put them in! In any case, those containers are dreadfully expensive to make and those rats. . . Well, we have begun to become sort of attached to them. Please find this [gnome].
[Wed Aug 15 17:40:15 2001] You say, 'What gnome?'
[Wed Aug 15 17:40:16 2001] Velarte Selire says 'Her name is Oobnopterbevny Biddilets. She was last seen high tailing it across the Plains of Karana. She infiltrated our temple and stole the containers that had our beloved rodents, which were already enchanted and prepared for our next round of tests. I shudder to think of what this monster may be doing to those poor animals. Anyway, retrieve them at any cost. You will need them for the [test] you will be conducting.
[Wed Aug 15 17:40:31 2001] You say, 'Which test?'
[Wed Aug 15 17:40:31 2001] Velarte Selire says 'The briefing explains how the test is to be conducted but first you need to find the test animals. Get the rodents first from that gnome. Then give me your Researcher's Briefing and we will start the test. Release all three rodents as directed then give me the three Empty Enchanted Jars. If you were able to cure all of the diseased rodents by properly using our enchanted rodents, we will consider this test a success and you shall be rewarded with the Researchers Badge.

Go to West Karanas. The gnome appears to respawn about every 15 minutes, near the south west side of the zone. Earlier ideas about a trigger point appear to have been disproved.

[Wed Aug 15 17:51:08 2001] Oobnopterbevny Biddilets shouts 'What a lovely diseased filled place! Tra la la.

If you read the book it says:

Research Briefing

***Confidential***

This aura is a curious thing indeed. When the aura is released, it disperses outward in four directions spreading to each rat it encounters. The aura is weak. Its range is but a few feet. Not that the aura can not cure a diseased rat unless it first encounters one that is healthy first. We are unable to account for this sympathetic effect.

When the aura encounters a healthy rat it ricochets back in the other direction, curing each diseased rat between the originator of the aura and the healthy rat the aura encountered. The aura then disperses.

The object of this test is to place the Enchanted Rats in such a way as to eliminate the disease from all rats involved in the test. Do this by taking a jar that contains a Live Enchanted Rat and putting it directly into a Tile.

For safety reasons, the test must be completed within 6 standard Norrathian hours.

The diagrams illustrate the aura’s magic flow. Give this briefing to Velarte to begin the test.

Key:
O = Healthy Rat
X = Diseased Rat

Diagram 1

O X X _

An enchanted rat is placed on the far right Tile. The aura spreads and heals the two diseased rats.

Result:

O O O O

In diagram 1, if an Enchanted Rat is placed on the Tile below a diseased rat, there is no effect. The aura did not encounted a healthy rat and did not reverse its flow.

Result:

O X X _
_ _ _ O

Diagram 2

O X _
_ _ X
_ _ O

An enchanted rat is placed on the top right tile. Diseased rats to the left and bottom are cured.

Result

O O O
_ _ O
_ _ O

The book gives you one more example, but basically, if you’ve ever played Othello, you should understand the puzzle now. It’s the same principle, but diagonals are not affected. Only left/right/up/down will change.

The book instructs you to “Return all three Empty Enchanted Jars to Velarte when finished. DO NOT drop an empty jar on a tile. It will break.”

Give Velarte Selire the book back.

This spawns rats. Having done it twice, I can confirm the pattern is random. (If anyone can confirm whether or not the rats can be attacked by passers-by, it would be appreciated).

My first pattern looked like this.

_ _ O O
_ _ X _
O X _ X
_ X X O

I placed mine in Tiles AD, BB, and CA. (bottom left, 2nd row from bottom 3rd slot, and 3rd row from bottom, 4th slot).

Give Velarte back the jars.

[Wed Aug 15 18:34:31 2001] Velarte Selire says 'You did it! You have proven you have the intelligence required and you may wear this Researcher's Badge with pride! Thank you for returning the jars.

You receive the Researcher’s Badge.

To respond to your query above, "If anyone can confirm whether or not the rats can be attacked by passers-by, it would be appreciated."

While doing the rat test a newbie came by and started attacking the rats. While they can be attacked, it looked like no damage was being done. Maybe cause the rats despawn and respawn when attacked. Not sure what a massive DD will do though.

After I sent a tell to the newbie not to attack the rats, they started attacking the tiles. (weird players out there)

I still completed the quest and got the badge despite a newbie's attack.

My puzzle looked like this:
o

ox

I noticed too, when you turn in the book, another Velarte spawns and the original despawns. So I'm not sure you can turn in the empty jars to the original or not (why would you anyways?)

Nicely done. I camped in Qeynos last night hoping the quest would be in today! Can't wait to get home and try it out.
OH, another tip!

Do not Accidentally put one of the empty jars, that you have received with the first and/or second placement, on a tile. The empty jars you get back, and the Enchanted Rat chars look the same!. So keep your inventory tidy, and make sure you check your jar, before you trade it with a tile.
lil adjsutment

I remember now, you can start with either curing the top-rwo or the left row, these can be cured without having the other cured first, I believe. But you have to have those two rows cured first, before you can cure the rest of the rats with your last jar. This last jar will indeed cure rats in more then one direction then, which is possible also accroding to the book.

Oh, and the guy despawns after you give him the empty jars and receive your reward. necklace looks like an Aviak talon on a string, nice Icon ;)
Did second part: Victory!!

Hehe, jiust did the second part (im same guy that wrote about the first part, sorry about not registering).

Read the book you get thoroughly, to understand how the "curing"of the rats works. Because after you have given the book back to the guy at the temple of life, about 12 rats, both healthy and diseased, will spawn at the lawn in front of him, in a square of 4 by 4, with some open spaces, that are called tiles, with a certain letter combination. Couldnt believe my eyes! I was afraid I could not solve the puzzle before someone decided to CAMP the rats! ;).

Now you must place those three jars in the right spot(the right TILE), to cure all the rats. Again, read the book first, to see how the curing actually works, with the rays bouncing of healthy rats and all, since the ORDER in which you put the 1st, 2nd and 3rd jar are very important, if you want to heal all the rats(and get empty jars back, which you have to give back to the guy.)
Dont just start trhwoing your jars on the empty spots you see, there are also more then three emptys spots, so...

Now I am assuming other players will get the same patter of Diseased and Healty rats every time, so here is the order in which I put the tiles;
MAJOR SPOILER:

Put first jar on empty spot in TOP row(all rats are facing one direction, so you are looking to their faces) When you try to put the jar on the ground, you will get a trade window, with the NAME of the TILE above it. Check if thats the tile you wanted to put it in! I used 3rd person top/down view to get a good overvieq of the puzzle.

This first jar will make sure all the Top-row rats are now healthy. This makes it possible to make all the rats on the LEFT side of the square healthy, by placing your second jar in the empty spot in that LEFT row(facing the rats eyes, YOUR left)there(i actually dont know if it makes any difference which jar you start with, just make sure you put them in the right ORDER)

This will cure the diseased rat(s) in that row, and will make it possible to cure the rest, by putting the last jar in the empty spot somewhere in the middle, forget exactly where, but it will be rather obvious. Sorry about not having the exact details, all the tiles are named, but I was too thrilled to write it all down.
When you put that last jar on the ground(through that TILE trade window again) you will hear the trumpets once more(for the third time, and the third empty jar will be in your inventory. All the rats are now healthy. its a fun sight! Now give all three empty jars to the guy, and receiveive your Researchers badge, all stats are now 3, exepct AC, which is 4!! And mana an HP now 15.

Extremely cool quest, Verant has done a great job here.

Ok, disclaimer for my solution of the puzzle above, it might be that you get a different pattern, just READ the book, and THINK before you start putting jars on tiles. It does make a difference for the final solution, where you put the first one, the second one and the third one. Its not that complicated, btw. Just dont mess up here ;) I would not knwo what happens if you put a jar in the wrong spot, but i am pretty sure you wont get it back. You dont put it on the ground, you "trade"it with a TILE ;) And you get the trumpet sound every time you put it in the right spot, and receive an empty jar back.

Aaaah, what a great night this was!

Good luck!

Sorry about all the spelling, but i am exited.
3rd quest is in!

After the latest patch the third quest is now in. I cant give the whole text, didnt write it down, but I have afew good tips about the first part. When you talk to Vegalys now he sends you to a guy at the temple of Life, he is standing outide, near the guy that gives the flask of blessed oil. talk to him, and follow the clues. You get a book with instructions for some test, but first you have to do some killing. The first part consists of finding a gnome in the plains of Karana, kill her, and bring back three jars of Enchanted Rat.
Looked in all the karana's and found here finally in West karana, in a peculiar way: she never appeared on tracking, but when I passed this point: +802 -4289 (its near Qeynos entrance between the first lilttle group of merchanthouses, and the second, you suddenly hear a Shout: "Oobnopterberry Biddilets shouts: what a lovely diseased place this is, tralala tralalie." After that I ran around some, and found her on tracking. I am pretty sure she is triggered by walking there, because when I searched for her the second time(had to gate first time) the same happened: not on tracking, went back to that exact spot and sure enough, there was the shout!

Ok, the fight: she is a gnome necro, blue to my level 46 druid, and has a pet off course. pet was green, low hits. But it was a tough fight, she has a LOT of hotpoints for a caster that is blue to me and hit me for 98 damage. Besides that she feared me at least thrice. Her spells didnt do much , I had cast all the resists on me. The first time I had to gate out with 0ne bub of health(mostly because she was beating me). the second time I decided to keep her at a distance(no root/dotting)and kite/blast her. Off course both her and her pet were snared. This worked in the end, but I had to use up ALL my mana(189 wis) including a last Drifting death, and at the very last I had to knock her down with my club, while the pet was beating on me. She was not fighting back then anymore. But dont let her come close to you, she hits like a Kunark or Velious mob! Also, when I kept her at a distance, she only tried to fear me once. Which always worked, but I have lousy magic resist, so...

So its doable by a level 46 druid, with mediocre gear, but BUFF UP, and keep her at a distance. Oh, and hope all your blasts hit for max damage, thats why it went sour also the first time.
The loot: three jars, called: "Live enchanted rat, jar 1"and then 2 and 3. No drop, lore.

Ok, going to do second part now ;)

For anybody wondering, the interrogator's badge is multiquestable.

My friend totally botched killing Markus Cachexia and Morley Murrain trying to complete this quest. He was killed almost instantly when he got too close to the druid ring and they agroed on him. At this point I was left to clean up the mess and looted the two heads, while my friend was holding the signed confession document.

Upon my friends return, I turned in both heads. My friend then turned in the signed confession document and was rewarded with the Interrogator's Badge.

Handing in 2nd badge currently gets you nothing. Doesn't trigger any dialog, get now new quest, not even a generic thank you from the NPC for handing over an item.

I can confirm this as I have now done the first part of the quest 3 times and the 2nd part twice as testing the "turning in the 2nd badge" theory.
Well...

The Investigator is on either a 45 minute or 1 hour spawn time. So it was probably just coincidence that he was up after turning in the helm again. And I'm sure that the interrogator is on just about the same, possibly longer. I had to wait 30 minutes to do first part. BEFORE you turn in at the end of the first part ask for another confession document, that way you have it ready for the 2nd part. I went looking for the Interrogator in SK, he wasn't up after 20 minutes of waiting, so I played another character and he was up. He spawns not far from the hermit hut, as that is the first place he takes you.
If you don't have the spell power to take the next 2 guys out fast be ready for some fun :) I personally had about 30 or 40 minions spawn due to interrupts, it was quite a pain without my beloved pet.
Now, I'm debating whether or not I should just turn in my 2nd badge to see if there's a 3rd quest :)
