You must do the Investigator's Badge Quest before doing this one. Before you go on with this one, be sure to get an extra unsigned confession off 'an investigator'.

You say, 'Hail, Vegalys Keldrane'

Vegalys Keldrane says 'Greetings to you, citizen. By order of the Council of Qeynos I have been given the duty of apprehending the individuals [responsible] for unleashing this terrible plague upon the people and the lands of Antonius Bayle. The more I look into this matter, the more I come to find that this will be no easy task.

You say, 'How can I advance further?'

Vegalys Keldrane says 'Interested in advancing further are you? Excellent, we are ready to begin the next phase of our operation. We have gathered a great deal of information as a result of the latest series of arrests. What we require most now are [interrogators] that are able to pry the information we require out those less then willing to talk.

You say, 'What interrogators?'

Vegalys Keldrane says 'If you are interested in joining the ranks of our interrogators and helping Qeynos further as we bring these fiends and murderers to justice, turn in your investigator's Badge and I will give you the briefing document you need. I already know I can trust my investigator's, so there is no need to further test you.

Vegalys Keldrane says 'Very well, here is the briefing document. Please read it very carefully. I wish you luck friend, this mission could prove to be dangerous.

The document leads you to an interrogator in South Karana.

You say, 'Hail, an interrogator'

an interrogator says 'I see you wish to become an interrogator. This is not a duty for the weak of heart you know. This job sometimes requires. .. an interrogator coughs, 'a little muscle I guess you would say.'

an interrogator says 'Nevertheless, we have an important job to do. There is a man by the name of Theodore Exanthem who is a known member of the Bloodsaber cult. He fled from Qeynos some time ago and we have been hot on his tail ever since.

an interrogator says 'We have tracked this man down and we now know his whereabouts. However, we have bigger fish to fry today then just this low life. Theodore knows the location of two other individuals also suspected of hiding out here in the plains.

an interrogator says 'Sadly, these fiends were the two that slipped into Surefall Glade and poisoned the waters there. Though the druids were able to quickly combine their efforts and neutralize the toxins with their magicks, grievous damage was done none the less. Two of the great protectors of the hills and the glade, Holly Windstalker and Cros Treewind, became seriously ill as did one of the glade's sacred bears.

an interrogator says 'Holly and Cros, sickened as they were, removed themselves from the Hills to weather out their illness and to keep the disease from spreading further. During their absence, the Bloodsabers were easily able to traffic in the materials needed to complete their terrible work.

an interrogator shakes his head sadly and says, 'Tragically, Cros Treewind was attacked by one of the sacred bears which was maddened by its illness. In his weakened state Cros was unable to defend himself and was killed by this defiled grizzly, one of the very creatures he was sworn to protect.'

an interrogator says 'So our goal is to pry the information we need from Theodore Exanthem so that we may bring these two fugitives to justice. After getting him to comply, you are to collect a confession from Theodore and have him lead us to the two fugitives. Give me Theodore's confession and the heads of these two fugitives and you shall have your badge.

an interrogator says 'I believe I know where we can find him. Follow me please.'

Follow the interrogator.

an interrogator says 'Theodore Exanthem by order of the Council of Qeynos and his lordship Antonius Bayle, I order you to come out of there immediately!

an interrogator says 'Theodore Exanthem, you will [take us to the location] of Marcus Cachexia and Morley Murrain immediately.

Theodore Exanthem says 'I think you've been breathing the air in the Northern Plains of Karana for too long. I will most certainly not tell you anything about their whereabouts, much less lead you right to them. You are not right in the head.

an interrogator says 'Vile beast! You are withholding information on two men guilty of terrible atrocities, not the least of which was causing the death of one of Qeynos' most respected and well known citizens, Cros Treewind! As an Interrogator I am authorized to use physical force if necessary.

Theodore Exanthem says 'What a joke! I'm not telling you a thing. You don't look like you could scare a moss snake. I'm not afraid of you!

You say, 'Take us to the location'

Theodore Exanthem reels back, his eyes wide with shock. Ow, he says nervously.

an interrogator says '[Take us to the location] of Markus Cachexia and Morley Murrain!

You say, 'Take us to the location'

Theodore Exanthem winces and says, Oh. Yeah right. Like I'm afraid of that moron or something. Theodore glances nervously over at you.

an interrogator says 'Take us to Markus Chachexia and Morley Murrain this instant or I'll turn you over to my friend here who appears to be much stronger then I am!

an interrogator smiles and says, 'Well, I'm getting tired. Why don't you hit him for a while. Maybe you will be more convincing then I have been.'

Attack him one time without a weapon. After a short time, he'll respond.

Theodore Exanthem says 'Sweet father of rot, alright already! Stop hitting me and tell me what you want me to do!

Give him the unsigned confession document you got from the investigator. (This step may no longer be valid, I was unable to get a confession document from an interrogator but received a signed document once arriving at the abandoned druid ring)

an interrogator says '[Take us to the location] of Markus Cachexia and Morley Murrain!'

You say, 'Take us to the location'

Theodore Exanthem says 'Fine follow me creeps.

At this point you follow Theodore Exanthem to the south to the abandoned druid ring. The culprits spawn along with some skeletal servants and ghouls. They are Morley Murrain and Markus Chachexia.

Theodore Exanthem says 'There... They are hiding out just down the hill here... Now release me!'

An interrogator says 'Not so fast. If you want your freedom back, sign this confession immediately.'

Theodore Exanthem makes a big X at the bottom of the document and hands it back saying, 'A bunch of worthless thugs is all you folks are!' (Note a signed confession appeared on my cursor)

An interrogator says 'You are on your own for now, Elina. You know what to do -- return to me when the deed is done.

Markus Cachexia says 'Undead legions assist me!'

Bring back their heads along with the signed confession to an interrogator at the tree where you first found him. (Note about a 12 minute spawn)

an interrogator says 'Excellent work, you did just fine today. You'll make a fine interrogator. Talk to Vegalys about advancing further.

You receive your Interrogator's Badge.

There is no faction for turning in the confession document and 2 heads to an interrogator:

[Sun Dec 25 13:13:58 2016] an interrogator regards you indifferently -- You could probably win this fight.
[Sun Dec 25 13:14:03 2016] an interrogator says 'Excellent work, you did just fine today. You'll make a fine interrogator. Talk to Vegalys about advancing further.'
[Sun Dec 25 13:14:03 2016] You gain experience!!
[Sun Dec 25 13:14:12 2016] You say, 'Interrogator's Badge'
Well that stinks...

I got to the interrogator, he talked for a while, I followed him to the dude. There was a bunch of stuff in brackets so I thought I would try talking to the dude first. They both disappeared in a matter of ten seconds. Lame. Very lame Sony. Now I have to do the first badge quest all over again. I am thinking of saying ***** it because it takes longer than I want to deal with. Very very very lame.

OK. OK. I did the first part all over again and knowing what I was supposed to do, it didn't take that long... The quest storyline is very fun and good, I just wish there wasn't the ten second disappearance thing. That part is a stupid and unnecessary part of the game mechanics. Give us AT LEAST a few minutes to take the right action... especially considering the interrogator takes an hour to respawn. We get a ten second window while he takes an hour. There is something very unfair here. I will give this 3 of 5 stars for questing goodness, but bad mechanics.

This quest now appears to be fixed, and then some .. you no longer need the Confession Document from the 'a investigator' back in Qeynos.

Once Theodore has led you to Markus Chachexia and Morley Murrain, the quest dialogue goes as this:

Theodore Exanthem says 'There.. They are hiding out just down the hill here.. Now release me!'

an interrogator says 'Not so fast. If you want your freedom back, sign this confession immediately.'

Theodore Exanthem makes a big X at the buttom of the document and hands it back saying, 'A bunch of worthless thugs is all you folks are!'

an interrogator says 'You are on your own for now, _____. You know what to do -- return to me when the deed is done.'

You receive Theodore's Confession

The interrogator will despawn, and you have to wait for him to repop before handing in the confession and the heads.

EDIT: You also do not need to kill Theodore, as some people have said - stop attacking once he tells you that it is enough, and the quest will proceed from there.

As of July 2006, the version of Theodore you are supposed to attack is bugged and cannot be hit by ANYTHING. No weapons, no bare hands, no spells, nothing.

Edit: I have deduced that this is because this version is flagged as a merchant. Seriously, you can sell to him and everything. Unbelievable.

On a more level note there were 12 skellitons at the point I thought I would find the Interrigator the were all very Green to me at lvl 33 and all went down very easy but the quest is still incomplete as the damn interrigator keeps getting killd by IDIOTS! that have no ideah what this NPC is there for they just kill him WHY IS HE SO EASY AND SOOO MANY OTHERS ARE NOT? ok. im probably gonna get flamed for this. but this is my first actual quest ever. ive always just grinded for xp and bought my gear or had it handed to me. both the head mobs aggored me at once. followed by a host of their servants. i thought as a bard id be sneaky and charm one of them. i charmed a head mob and had him hold off the pets whilst i soloed the other head mob. NEVER DO THIS. my charmed head mob died and his corpse promptly vanished ( i presume its because one npc killed by another npc. same thing happens when a guard KS yoru mob. time to trek back to get another interrogators briefing.......
Broken?
# Jun 23 2004 at 7:21 AM Rating: Decent
I tried this twice each time with same result. Following the above script I met with the interrogator who took me to to Theodore. He went through his lines but when I attacked with no weapons, only hand-to-hand I was told: You have punched Theodor for 2 points. You have slain Theodore.
Now I know that my little wood elf has STR of 175, but srill...
I tired the /guidehelp command and received a message that the command was used to report quest and events. Did I use the wrong command on the prompt line?
Anyone else have this probelm?

You are supposed to kill him, he has a whopping 1 hit point. He then "respawns." I check it, and as of this post it worked fine.
Unsigned confession document

Just to make it explicit, you get the unsigned confession document from the investigator in south qeynos. You don't have to be doing the 1st badge quest to get it (or do it all over again). If he's up and standing by his tree, just ask him for an unsigned confession document and he'll give you one.

Well, my wife decided to try this with her 29 druid, a little low maybe but I had my 46 druid to help if needed, We're on The Rathe and let me tell you, "A few minions" is WAY off! Each of the two guys, Morley and Marcus spawned 6 minions a piece. Don't know if that's just our server, but She read the walk through and the posts and we figured we could handle a few (3-4). Fortunately there was a 65 Bard to help with crowd control. Just a heads up if you are a low level (below 40) you might want to take a group.....
RE: quest completed
# Mar 13 2004 at 10:56 AM Rating: Decent
I soloed the two guys and their minions. I killed one guy and his minions when that one aggroed on me and ran out to fight me. His friend stayed at the circle. Then I made a mistake. I was 80 health and 40 m after the fight with the first one. Then I saw the other guy alone and decided to finish it without healing/medding. He wasn't alone. He had more friends than the first guy. I gritted it out though. Finished him off and then did his buddies. I was down to 5 percent health at one point. I was in heal/attack mode while killing the second ghoul after the named human fell. I threw up DS against the swarm of ghouls and waded in dual wielding 1hs.

42 druid should have been able to do as well. The ghouls rarely hit, and DS makes it where they take more than they give. My ranger is NOT twinked (beyond fungus tunic). And I did not even have ward summoned memmed for the battle.
gettting the conf doc
# Nov 11 2003 at 8:44 PM Rating: Decent
Hello,
I have tried this about 3 times now and I can't get the unsigned confession document. It is really ****'n me off. I don't know whats going on with it. I hail him and nothing, I give him the papers from qeynos then he starts shortly after, BUT I CANT get the confession document for him to sign. Everything else works. I can get the 2 heads and I give them to the interrorgator but he just takes them. Let me know if any ideas.

go to the investigator in south qeynos and say, give me a confession document (like during the first badge quest). he will give you one. take this with you to do the 2nd quest. give the unsigned confession document to Theodore Exanthem after he says "Sweet father of rot, alright already! stop hitting me and tell me what you want me to do"

Slight changes from walkthrough
# Sep 11 2003 at 8:30 AM Rating: Excellent

Trying to follow the walkthrough to the letter got me in trouble.

- Don't hail the interrogator. Well, you can, he won't say anything, but what you need to do is give him the briefing document. He'll seem to just eat it and do nothing; don't panic. It takes him a minute or two between each action. Wait a minute and the process will start.

- Incidentally I've found the investigator in several places, although he does seem to spawn at the tree as Sylvene says, below. Mostly he seems to be where he was left by the last quest attempt :)

- This is the important part, different from what the walkthrough says and from what Sylvene says. That's probably okay in a completely lag-free environment, but it got me in trouble. After you hit Theodore, you will get the message "You have slain..." and he will respawn immediately. Do not stop attacking him. By the time your second A key goes through, he will have respawned, and you will instead be attacking the newly spawned version, and you've failed the quest. As soon as he "dies" and respawns, your attack is over.

- If you're paranoid about this (as I was the second time) press A then immediately press escape. That way you will lose your target and even if you continue to attack you will have nothing to attack. Be careful to turn off attack before retargeting Theodore. For me, I pressed A then escape, but by the time I lost my target I'd already "slain" him and he'd respawned, so the attack was already over.

I was so pleased at myself for not failing the second time that I almost forgot to say "Take us to the location!" and wondered why we were standing around doing nothing.

Yes, still bugged but still doable.

SPOILER: Just to reiterate: the Interrogator spawns next to a tree in South Karana at -4613, -3529. After giving him your interrogator's manual (from Vegalys) you must listen to his 7 minute story. He then walks to the hermit house and calls out Theodore. Sit and listen to their 7 minute exchange and respond when prompted by the bracketed text. When the interrogator tells you "I am getting tired... you hit him for a while" you then attack Theodore with you bare hands only, no weapons. You will see the message "You have slain Theodore Exanthem." Stop attacking and wait for Theodore to respond ".. for the love of the lord of rot!..." (If you attack him after that, he will start to take real damage and will run away and then both Theo and the Interrogator will need to be killed to reset the quest.) Now give Theo a confession document from the investigator quest in South Qeynos (you DID get another unsigned confession document before you turned in the two signed documents and the head didnt you?) After giving Theo the unsigned document he will return it (now signed) and lead you to the druid ring (just south and over the hill). Run ahead of the interrogator and attack the bad guys to keep the interrogator out of the fight. Your targets are 2 level 27 shadowknights and 4 undead. These clowns were easy to me at lev 51. Give the interrogator the 2 heads and the signed confession document to recieve your interrogator's badge.

I was able to do this on July 15th. The Interrogator and Theodore stood right on top of each other instead of pacing around, so much exactly on the same spot that it looked like a single mob, it's textures changing as it swayed. I had Theodore targeted the whole time, and just before the point you are supposed to smack him around, he respawned a few paces off. I hit him once - unarmed, and he died instatly, but was still standing, I just got the message that I killed him. He didn't say his line, but when I handed him the confession, he gave it back signed and took us to the others. Everything went as scripted from there.

I don't know if this is really fixed or if I just got lucky, but it does seem possible to do the quest again.

Tried this tonight (Jul 8) and the two came and danced for me... a Guide had to come and pull them apart with some version of Cancel Magic and Atone.. finally they started talking.

Unfortunately, because they were out of position, I missed the de- and re-spawn of Theodore and attacked the respawned version (the one I was supposed to hand the document to, I realized later)... so now I get to redo the Investigator's Badge...

Maybe this morning's patch will take care of the pathing bug...

This works until the Interrogator calls Theo out. Then they just pace back and forth and never talk. I have tried it twice now and it has failed at this point both times.

I also note that if you hit Theo like you are supposed to -- he doesnt give in -- he aggros.

I saw a ranger succeed with this quest the other day but I am not sure how she done it. She attacked Theo, got aggro and chased him a ways. Then she ran off and zoned to break aggro. When she got back -- Theo and the Interrogator were talking. I tried this the 2nd time and it didnt work for me.

Apparently the bug is back because I have done the first Badge quest and have started this one.I give the Interrogator the breifing document and then it takes roughly a minute for him to began his bedtime story. Then after a long time of hearing his boring story he finaly walks to the hermits house and calls theo out. Then after that they just pace back and forth forever.
I've tryed telling theo to "Take me to the Location' but nothing happens. Then I disarmed myself and started punching him, he fought back and ran at 50% health, I tryed rooting him and telling him to take me to the location and still nothing happened. So i just kept punching him til he died.Went to front of hermit camp and waited a long time. After nothing happened I left. What sucks is you have to do the first quest again.I think this is stupid and they should fix both of these problems.

Are you turning in both heads along with the signed Confession Document you should have obtained from Theodore? Before you finish the Investigator's Badge quest, you have to remember to pick up an extra unsigned confession document from the investigator so you have something for Theo to sign...this part is easily overlooked and can be a pain to have to go back and do.
Quest went as expected
# May 30 2003 at 11:45 AM Rating: Excellent
I finished the Interrogator's Badge quest last night, and everything went according to the above plan except for a few minor deviations. If you read the Interrogator's Briefing that you recieved from Vegalys, it says that you must turn this briefing in to the interrogator in SK to receive the assignment. Although this walkthrough does not mention it, do this turn in right after you hail the interrogator, and he should start chatting away after a brief pause.

When I got to the part where you punch Theodore once, I punched him for 12, and he died immediately. Although he was dead, he did not disappear and respawn so I waited a minute and the signal "Sweet father of rot...." line appeared. I did this quest with the help of my bf who is a 55 beastlord. With me being a 53 pally as well, all of the figting for the heads was not a problem at all. His pet could have cleared the spawns and their pets with no problem, but better safe than sorry.

Oh yeah, in my experience, the verbal response time of the Interrogator and Theodore was not nearly as long as others who have posted. I never had to wait more than 20-30 seconds for a response from any of the parties involved.../shrug maybe I was just lucky?
Went slightly wrong, but recovered
# May 23 2003 at 6:37 AM Rating: Decent
I did this quest but in my impatience started hitting Theodore before the investigator had spoken for ages and become tired. I hit him a few times with my weapon and kept stopping and saying "show us the location" when he got to about 75% health he started to run so I chased him, continuing to hit him and menace him (my weapon was only doing damage in the 20s) eventually he said the "Theodore Exanthem reels back, his eyes wide with shock. Ow, he says nervously. " as he ran and then when he got to about 24% health he suddenly vanished. I wandered back to the interogator where he was stood again, not saying anything. I tried to give him the confession but he wouldn't take it, so I stood for a bit hoping they would start up the conversation again, but they didn't, I really thought I'd screwed up, however in dispair I decided to hit him one last time. This time however he reacted properly bu dying and respawning instantly and the mission was back on track. It could be that this is a way of avoiding the 10minute conversation.
