You say, 'Hail, Vegalys Keldrane'

Vegalys Keldrane says 'Greetings to you, citizen. By order of the Council of Qeynos I have been given the duty of apprehending the individuals [responsible] for unleashing this terrible plague upon the people and the lands of Antonius Bayle. The more I look into this matter, the more I come to find that this will be no easy task.'

You say, 'Who is responsible?'

Vegalys Keldrane says 'The plague unleashed upon the Plains of Karana is the work of the followers of Bertoxxulous. Those responsible belong to group known as the Bloodsabers though there were others involved as well. Some time back, they launched a plot to overthrow Antonius Bayle and our ruling council. Their [plan] failed.'

You say, 'What plan?'

Vegalys Keldrane says 'Their plan was to unleash a plague so deadly and virulent that it would wipe out all life from here to Highpass Hold. They planned to brand themselves and their foul allies with a rune that would have rendered them immune to the effects of this plague. From that point they would have been able to simply walk in, easily defeat the weakened stragglers and declare themselves the rulers of this kingdom by default. But they were [careless].'

You say, 'How they were careless?'

Vegalys Keldrane says 'The sudden influx of scoundrels and loathsome individuals was our first tip off. They required a rather enormous number of supplies, materials and manpower to construct the ornate altars, craft and enchant their runed branding irons and supply their armies with the weapons needed for the cleanup work afterward. They needed to rely upon [outside help].'

You say, 'What outside help?'

Vegalys Keldrane says 'They mostly chose to hire bandits and brigands who are foolishly more concerned with immediate profits than the long-term effects of their actions. But once they knew we were on to them they even started hiring some of the more 'civil' gnolls, if there is such a thing. Gnolls tend to be easy to push around, stupid, and they work very cheaply. They knew their time was short and they were desperate. Choosing to work with untrustworthy, lazy scoundrels caused the whole thing to begin to [unravel], praise Rodcet!'

You say, 'How did it unravel?'

Vegalys Keldrane says 'Their workers were careless. Aside from noticing the unsavory element in our city, our citizens began to run across many of the strange items and materials that were being trafficked into our city en masse. It was at that point that the citizens began to [complain] quite loudly about all of this.'

You say, 'Complain?'

Vegalys Keldrane says 'Obviously, they questioned the meaning behind these events and rightfully so. They were frightened much as they are now. I admit, I was remiss in my duties for not noticing it sooner. One of the biggest complainers during this time was a man by the name of [Earron Huntlan], proprieter of the famed Lion's Mane tavern. Though he is just a simple merchant, he did us a great service.'

You say, 'Who is Earron Huntlan?'

Vegalys Keldrane says 'Earron is quite a character. He gets all kinds of travelers stopping by his inn for a drink or whatever other business. His patrons started telling stories of being mugged and harassed by these loathsome individuals in the very streets of our fair city. Of course, he was concerned. So he became a kind of advocate for this cause, ringing the [alarm] bell as it were. I admit, at first I did not believe the conspiracy. I simply could not believe it was all happening under our nose.'

You say, 'What alarm?'

Vegalys Keldrane says 'Well, he succeeded in whipping the populace into a frenzy. He even got the famous wizard Al'Kabor to help him out by determining the nature of the strange items many of our citizens were finding. Getting that man to do anything not directly related to his research is not an easy thing to accomplish either. Needless to say, at that point I saw the truth and the Prime Healer forgive me for not seeing it sooner. Were it not for the investigations and general outcry of [concerned citizens], we might not be standing here talking today.'

You say, 'What concerned citizens?'

Vegalys Keldrane says 'Yes, it was citizens like you that helped to save Qeynos that day. We uncovered their plot, captured the man who was in charge and put him to death. Of course, the Bloodsabers retaliated and using their incomplete research still managed to unleash the plague we face now. Though devastating in its own right, you must admit it is rather mild compared to what it might have been. I thank you for your interest. Perhaps you would be willing to [help] me?'

You say, 'I am willing to help you'

Vegalys Keldrane says 'Excellent! The more I learn from my investigators the more I find that these Bloodsabers have stretched their tendrils of influence all throughout our beloved city. Nevertheless, we are committed to exposing these fiends once and for all. Perhaps you would like to become an [investigator]?'

You say, 'I would like to become an investigator'

Vegalys Keldrane says 'Very well then, Durix. We will not allow just anyone to wear the official Investigator's Badge and please forgive me. . . But it is hard to tell where one's loyalties lie these days. If you are truly [serious] then there is a duty you must perform first to show you are on the side of Antonius Bayle, the council and the good people Qeynos.'

You say, 'I am truly serious'

Vegalys Keldrane says 'There is a guard by the name of Robbie Shilster that patrols the Northern Plains of Karana. He is allied with our enemies and completely corrupt. He is flagrant in his trafficking of contraband goods. His orders are to guard the great wooden bridge to stave off the insect swarms. But our investigators report that he simply stands to the side and watches as the swarm rolls through. You are to execute this man for his treason and bring me his helm. Then, we will talk.'

Go North Karana and go north of the wooden bridge, near the wall. Find Guard Shilster and kill him. Loot a Cracked Corrupt Guard Helm. Run back to Qeynos and give his helm to Vegalys.

Vegalys Keldrane says 'Thank you for bringing this person to justice. Please read this manual very, VERY carefully. Commit it to memory. We do everything strictly by the book. We are a people of law and order and I simply won't tolerate a breach of protocol. Investigators are expected to accurately report findings, are authorized to issue warrants and to notarize official documents for all lands under the jurisdiction of Antonius Bayle and the council. I sincerely hope you can earn your Investigator's Badge.'

You gain experience!!

You receive an Investigator's Briefing. Go to South Qeynos. At a tree south of the Lions Mane tavern you will meet an investigator in a yellow robe. Give him the book.

an investigator says 'Very well, let's get to work. I assume you have read the briefing and committed it to memory. This is how you will be tested. I shall play the part of student and you shall play the master who directs me. I promise I won't make it easy on you either, we want only the best. We'll see how you do and then I'll decide if you are worthy to wear the badge or not.'

You say, 'Where is the first suspect?'

an investigator says 'The first suspect was last seen near the shop called Fireprides.'

Fireprides is the armor store near the bank. At this point use /pet commands to get the investigator to listen to you.

You say, 'Follow me.'

an investigator says 'Right, let's get going.'

Look for Riley Shplots.

You say, 'Are you a member of the Bloodsabers?'

Riley Shplots shakes visibly and says, 'Oh, no. I knew this would happen one day. Please don't hurt me! I had very little to do with this plague, though it is quite a nice one, you must admit. I was just a courier. I'll come quietly. I don't want any trouble. My small contribution to the glory of Bertoxxulous has already been given but I certainly don't want to go to meet him just yet!'

You say, 'Give me a confession document'

an investigator says 'Here you are.'

You say, 'Summon a guard.'

Guard Sylus says 'Come along, prisoner.'

You say, 'Where is the second suspect?'

an investigator says 'The second suspect was sighted below the Grounds of Fate.'

Look for Willie Garrote. He may be found under the arena, near the cells.

You say, 'Are you a member of the Bloodsabers?'

Willie Garrote says 'A Bloodsaber? Of course I'm not, don't be ridiculous!'

You say, 'Give me a confession document.'

an investigator says 'Here you are.'

You say, 'Summon a guard'

Guard Sylus says 'Come along, fiend. We haven't far to go.'

You say, 'Where is the third suspect?'

an investigator says 'The last suspect has been known to hang around that low life known as Raz the Rat.'

Look for Donally Stultz near the docks, on the shore.

You say, 'Are you a Bloodsaber?'

Donally Stultz says 'Of course I'm a Bloodsaber, you fool! I've just returned from the Plains of Karana where I was reveling in the glory of the Plaguebringer. Now then, since I see that this foolish investigator is with you, I suppose you want me to sign a confession document or something like that? Well, let's have it then!'

You say, 'Give me a confession document'

an investigator says 'Here you are.'

Donally Stultz crumples the document into a ball, throws it to the ground and spits in your face, yelling, 'You are a fool if you really believe I would sign such a thing. Prepare to die!'

Kill him and loot his head. Give the investigator the two confessions and the one head.

an investigator says 'You have done our city a great service and helped to bring several criminals to justice this day! Wear this Investigator's Badge with pride! Speak again with Vegalys Keldrane, he may have information about [advancing further] in rank.'

Your faction standing with Antonius Bayle has been adjusted by 5.

Your faction standing with Ring of Scale has been adjusted by -2.
Your faction standing with Kane Bayle has been adjusted by -5.
Your faction standing with Merchants of Qeynos has been adjusted by 5

Receive your Investigator's Badge.

You say, 'I want to advance further in rank'

Vegalys Keldrane says 'At this point, I am mainly in need of loyal and trustworthy investigators. I must first gather information on who these people are and exactly how far their influences stretch. However, once I begin to implement the next phase of this operation, you may be able to assist us once again if you prove to be talented enough. For now, simply continue to observe and report.'

Look for "Guard Shilster", instead of 'Robbie'. Probably see him on track that way.

No Pet
# Aug 27 2002 at 5:57 PM Rating: Decent
If you're a pet class or a wizard with a familiar, do not have your pet or familiar up when you hand in the book. I'm a mage and I couldn't get him to follow me when I had my pet up. I used renew summoned to kill my pet.

My wizzy friend used /pet get lost to get rid of his familiar and the interrogator despawned as well.

So don't summon a pet at all. Just go in and nuke the last guy. Or let the interrogator fight while you nuke.
Getting him to follow you
# Aug 25 2002 at 2:53 PM Rating: Decent
I started this quest but could not get the investigator to follow me, even with the /pet follow command (judging from the other posts this is a common problem). I tried getting the helm again and repeating the start but that didnt help. In frustration, I tried doing the quest without him following me and it worked fine. Just run to the suspects and ask if they are bloodsabers. Then run back to the investigator to get confession documents each time. It may even be easier this way because you do not have to put up with the poor pathing if he's following you. Dont forget to call for a guard each time as well.

Incidentally, once I started the fight at the end, he did run from the Lions Mane to join in. This caught me out as I was root/rotting the bloodsaber. The investigator got killed very quickly which meant I had to wait for him to respawn.

Ok, I JUST completed this quest. Pathing was really aweful for investigator, you need to go where he tries to go, I suggest walking, not running, I also suggest no SoW.

I'm a cleric. Non-pet class. Used the /pet follow me command just fine. It works.

Tried this quest myself. The investigator does not respond to pet commands for a non-caster(I'm a monk). He also does not respond when you just say 'follow me'. Now I have to find the helm again.

I just completed this part of the quest with my lvl 28 Vah Shir Beastlord. I gave the investigator the book and he became my pet. I was able to use the same buffs on him that I normally do on my pet tiger. The investigator kicked some butt with scale skin, strengthen, spirit of frost, and spirit of keshuval. He was even a DB con to me! I just thought I would share that bit of info for the pet classes out there. I am not sure if anyone else has pointed this out before tho.

I tried this just now, something to do, had the cracked corrupt guard helm. Gave the book to the investigator and followed the instructions. It said he was grouping with me, etc. Worked fine, up until I told him to follow me. He wouldn't follow. Grr. They want us to do these silly quests and they don't work or ruin faction you need elsewhere. Ok, so I didn't think they were silly until I tried a bunch. Now I find them silly and frusterating.

you need to type "/pet follow me" and he will you need to do this after every interaction with him. The pet window in the new Ui will not help.

as you enter the gates turn left and you will see a door go inside make a right then take 2 steps. on your left should be a staircase, go up it. Once at the top turn left then go all the way down to the enf into the other tower. He is in plate.

# Aug 06 2002 at 11:22 AM Rating: Good
Did this quest last night. It was either bugged or they changed it. I messed it up at first but quickly figured it out and didn’t have to repeat it.

Go to the tree in S.Qeynos and find investigator. Handed in the book. Bit of dialog.

You say, 'where is the first suspect ?'

an investigator says 'The first suspect was last seen near the shop called Fireprides. (he was actually in Fireprides)

You say, “ give me a confession document”

Look for Riley Shplots

You say, 'are you a member of the Bloodsabers ?'

Riley Shplots says, “blah blah blah…”

Hand him the document, get back a signed confession.

Go Back to investigator,

You say, 'where is the second suspect ?'

an investigator says 'The second suspect was sighted below the Grounds of Fate. (under the arena, near the cells)

You say, “ give me a confession document”

Find Willie Garrote

You say, 'are you a member of the Bloodsabers ?'

Willie Garrote says “yadda yadda yadda..”

Give him the document, get back your confession…back to investigator.

You say, 'where is the third suspect ?'

……Donally Stultz on the docks

You say, “ give me a confession document”

Find Donally Stultz , ask him the bit about the bloodsabers, hand him the doc and kill him…

Return to the chap under the tree and give him two confessions and a head and you get your medal.

No guards involved when I did this. The silly investigator doesn’t follow and the NPC’s disappeared once I got their confessions…hope this helps.

Last night I went to complete the first stage, after reading everything here it seemed I could still go and do the full quest. But the /pet follow command would not work for me, nor would anything else(GM even tried to make him follow and nothing)

I did finish this quest doing the following:

Ask him 'Where is the first suspect?" when he tells you then /say "Give me a confession document" go to Fireprides and*wait* for RIley to spawn, and just hand him the document voila! returned signed ;) Now the crucial part go back to the investigator and /say Summon a guard (you MUST do this part or riley will not depsawn for a LOOOOOONG time). THEN /say Where is the second suspect? and then ask for the confession document, take it to WIllie and just hand it to him, return to investigator /say SUmmon a guard, then sit and wait for a few minutes to make sure Willie despawns. When he is gone /say Where is the third suspect, get the doc, hand it in ... whoop Donbie's butt and get the head.

When i got back to the investigator, I put the 2 docs into the trade window and the head, but before I culd click trade, he despawned on me ... took 2 hours before I could get him to respawn(and 3 killings of Shilster in hopes handing in his head would cause him to repsawn) When he did finally respawn I did NOT hand in the book, I took the chance and handed in the docs/head again, and I was given the badge.

pain in the butt, but it does work this way ...

I did this quest as a 22 Druid, no real problems, except making that idiot follow me, but eventually he did. I can't seem to find any information on the following quests, though. Where might they be? What should I do (other than hold onto an extra confession document, I got that part, just too late)?

I have done this couple times because I screwed up on the second badge quest. Here are some suggestions:

1) Before you turn in all items for your investigator badge, ASK for another confession document. YOU will need this for the interrogator badge quest!!!!!!! If you forget to do this, prepare to kill Guard Shilster AGAIN in order to get to the the interrogator badge quest.

2) If you are KOS to everybody (I am a lizard), DO the gnoll fang quest to increase your factions with half of the people in Qeynos. Yes, wolf form is required or you will be one dead puppy. Keep in mind that the moonstone you get from this quest can be used on another quest which will give you more faction hits. You have to look them up. I forgot the Quest NPC names. Prepare to turn in about 8 stacks of gnoll fangs to get reasonable faction.

Afterward, when you are still in wolf form, do the watch report quest from the bard outside the bard guild. Since you can just run back and fore in the same zone with the Anedan and Behroe watch report quest, you will keep your wolf form! AWESOME! Keep in mind of this, you need reasonable good faction to complete the second part of this quest. That is returning the report to the bard. When you get high enough faction, one round trip will get you two faction hits instead of one. By now, you aren't KOS to most people in Qeynos, since you have a good reputation to the guards, merchants, bards, and knights. Beware, you are still very KOS to the druids, rangers, monks and the priests, if you haven't done anything to increase your factions with them. With wolf form, you can do the 1st investigator quest. Priests of Life can be raised by bone chips (MANY MANY bone chips). Monk's factions (Silent Fist and Ashen Order) are next to impossible to raise. You will probably need to kill gnolls in Qeynos for the rest of your life in order to be friends to them.

Good luck!

Quest works! When you ask the Investigator for the confession document - give it to the accused. Then summon the guard. You will have an unrolled confession returned after he is gone. The Investigator will help you fight Donally Stultz but it is feeble. Make sure you can handle him yourself or have a bud help. I did it at 51 for grins. Easy meat on the fight.
The first suspect spawns inside Fireprides just behind the counter. The second suspect spawns near the wooden locks in the prison cell area. The third suspect spawns near the south docks on the far side of the pier. This is not the pier the boat docks at but the other pier. Good hunting!
