  • At the end of the previous quest, Betti Frostweaver told you to show your Embroidered Coldain Prayer Shawl to Gilthan.

Gilthan Brittleblade says 'So, you've been chosen to attempt the rune, eh? Been ages since anyone's even made an attempt. The rune represents the very essence of our people, our culture, and our religion. Take a sea shell runed with enduring breath and a small brick of velium and grind them together in a mortar and pestle. Add water to the powder and model the rune. Fire the rune with water and the best of firing sheets. Show the product to Trademaster Kroven.'

  • Head off to Siren's Grotto and kill Sirens until you get a Runed Sea Shell with one charge of Enduring Breath.

  • Combine the Sea Shell and a small brick of velium in a Mortar and Pestle (if you are a rogue) or in a Mixing Bowl (any class) to get an Enchanted Velium Powder (No-Fail Combine).

  • Now combine the Enchanted Velium Powder and a Water Flask in a pottery wheel to get an Unfired Rune (Pottery Trivial 162).

  • Combine the Unfired Rune with a High Quality Firing Sheet and Water Flask in a kiln to receive a Blank Rune (Pottery Trivial 15).

  • Now show the rune to Trademaster Kroven (also in the Thurgadin Exchange).

Trademaster Kroven says 'Fine piece of work there, _____, especially fer an outlander. Now yer gunna need to make a burin to etch the rune with. Once that's done ye need to kneel in the chapel and recite this prayer with total sincerity in yer heart. If yer plea be heard by our Father Brell he'll bless ya with the knowledge necessary to carry on. With that knowledge you'll take the blank rune, the burin and a fletching kit to etch the rune. Show Grimthor the etched rune and he'll guide you from there.'

  • Receive a Prayer to Brell.

    You say, 'What burin?'

Trademaster Kroven says 'You'll need a fletching kit and a fair bit of skill for this one, _____. Round up a tooth from a swordfish and attatch it to an Ulthork tusk wrapped in a Molkor hide.'

  • Head to Siren's Grotto and get a swordfish tooth from the swordfish and a molkor hide from the molkors. You can also get ulthork tusks there but they're much easier to get in eastern wastes where you can kill the low level ulthorks for their tusks. The swordfish tooth is NO DROP which is the only item actually forcing you to go into Siren's Grotto.

  • Combine the tusk, swordfish tooth, and hide in a fletching kit to get Burin (Fletching Trivial 135).

  • Go to the room where the quest started with the Grand Historian. Make sure Grand Historian Thoridain is in the room and stand at /loc -343.61, 803.92, -17.11, target yourself and then say the following prayer until you see a message saying you've been inspired:

You say, 'Oh Brell, Thank you for protecting me and seeing me through my trials. Forgive me for the things I think and say and do that displease you. Please reveal to me your will and bless me with the patience and obedience to do that which you desire. Amen.'

You have been inspired. The sacred pattern of the Coldain rune materializes on the ground before you.

  • On the floor in front of the Historian is an Etched Rune Pattern at /loc -319.28, 793.04, -17.11. This pattern needs to be combined with the Burin and Rune in a fletching kit. This makes an Etched Rune (Fletching Trivia 168).

  • Show your Etched Rune to Grimthor by the brew barrel in Thurgadin.

Grimthor Brewbeard says 'That looks about right. You're moving along well outlander. Next you'll be needin to brew up a sacred ink to fill the grooves in your rune. Take Iceclad Cutlass fish oil, liquid velium, and some Royal Kromrif blood, brew them in the barrel here then take the product and the rune and combine them in a fletching kit. Show Talem Tucker the resulting item if yer successful.

You say, 'What cutlass fish oil?'

Grimthor Brewbeard says 'Grab a pole and fish the waters in Iceclad until you catch yourself three Iceclad Cutlass fish. Place them in this oil extractor and you'll have whatcha need.'

    You say, 'What liquid velium?'

Grimthor Brewbeard says 'Collect a small piece of velium and a bottle of rubbing alcohol and brew them together in a barrel. It aint easy, but it should prove to be a minor task for the likes of you.'

  • Receive Fish Oil Extractor, a four-slot container.

  • Fish in Iceclad until you get three Cutlass Fish and combine them in the extractor (Fishing No-Fail Combine). This results in Cutlassfish Oil.

  • Find some Rubbing Alcohol (bought from either the Mortician in Cabilis or at the Icy Mug in Thurgadin - west of the four-way on your map). Combine the rubbing alcohol and a small piece of velium in a brew barrel to get Liquid Velium (Brewing Trivia 135).

  • Get some Royal Kromrif Blood from Iceshard Manor in Kael Drakkel.

  • Combine the Liquid Velium, Fish Oil and Royal Kromrif Blood in a brew barrel. This results in a Sacred Velium Ink (Brewing Trivial 168).

  • Combine the ink and rune in a fletching kit to get a Velium Etched Rune (Fletching Trivial 168).

  • Go to the jewelry store in Thurgadin by the Exchange. Show your rune to Talem Tucter.

Talem Tucter says 'I've heard of your mission, _____. I must admit that I had my doubts you'd make it this far. The rune's creation is nearly impossible for even the most skilled of Coldain craftsmen. You should be exceedingly proud. Many have attempted this feat and nearly all have lacked the skill, faith, patience and persistence that is prerequisite for what destiny holds in store for you. You are now ready to use this pattern to construct the sacred rune's casing and complete the runed shawl.'

    You say, 'What casing?'

Talem Tucter says 'Combine two platinum bars, a small piece of velium and the casing pattern in a Jeweler's kit. Take the completed casing and the rune and combine them in the same kit. When this is done all that's left is to tailor the rune to the shawl with the pattern. Take the finished product to Borannin, I'm sure he's eager to speak with you.'

  • Talem really means Loremaster Solstrin.

  • You receive a Rune Casing Pattern. Combine this pattern, a Small Piece of Velium and two Platinum Bars in a Jewelry Kit to receive the Rune Casing (Jewelry Trivial 152).

  • Now combine the casing and the rune in a Jewelry Kit to receive an Encased Velium Etched Rune (Jewelry Trivial 162).

  • Take the Encased Velium Etched Rune, Runed Prayer Shawl Pattern, and your Embroidered Coldain Prayer Shawl. Combine them in a tailoring kit to receive your 7th Shawl: Runed Coldain Prayer Shawl (Tailoring Trivial 162).

  • You can then go show Loremaster Solstrin your 7th shawl. Do NOT hand his your shawl until you have read the steps for the 8th shawl.

Loremaster Solstrin says 'Incredible! Never before has an outlander been skilled and determined enough to craft our sacred rune. You are now worthy of the Dain's most perilous task. You should seek an audience with the Dain immediately. Show him your Runed Prayer Shawl, he will give you the task that has been prepared for you. If the Dain is away show your Shawl to Chamberlain Krystorf and he will call for him.'

I can't claim to be the author of that little quip, but it really is true; an epic quest is usually getting a few items, killing a few mobs, and doing a lot of waiting for uber-rare spawns to show up.

These shawl quests require a little more than that, but you see eventual progress with each one.

I just completed my 7th shawl, and I'm really glad to have it. the 1 extra mana per tick does help out some, and the extra stats are wonderful. The value that can't be calculated is the knowledge that I spent the last few months working on all my tradeskills (scrounging up all those spider silks and HQ pelts and crystalline spider silks and the THOUSANDS of heady kiolas that I made while training my tailoring) Just to be able to say "I did it!".

I learned many new things these past few months:

    1) That Thurgardin Gate potion that you learn how to make during the 4th shawl is an absolute must for any non-porting class.

    2) Make lots of money before doing your tradeskills, and don't be concerned about making money off any of it... you're only wasting time.

    3) Unless you're going to grandmaster in tailoring, don't bother getting your skill past 158. It's either going to cost you WAY too much money (i.e. 50-250pp per attempt with Wyvern Armor), or too much time hunting/foraging items (how many drake eggs do you really think you can forage in a day? 1? 2?).

    4) Read the quest CAREFULLY... if the quest tells you to grind the sea shell in a mortar&pestle, you'll have to locate a mortar&pestle (P.S. you can't buy one in Thurgardin)

    5) Be Persistant. Rome wasn't built in a day. If you go Days/weeks without finding a specific item, put it off and come back to it. I know a necromancer who got all of the items for his 7th shawl before he got all his hairs for the 6th.

    6) Never underestimate your foes. Yeah, you can take on the iceshard fort with one group, but it's much easier with 2-3 groups :)

    7) It's definitely worth it. Each person has a limit to the amount of time or money they want to invest in something, and that's ok. But think of all the times you're sitting in Sebilis or Velks shouting for a group... pull out that jewelry kit and make some rings... pull out your sewing kit and make some crystalline silk swatches... it's all about efficient use of the downtime you already have.

    8) Your skills will never go away! once you get Jewelcraft to 165, you can get an enchanter to wave his/her magic wand past your bar of electrum, pop it into a kit with your newly won Blue Diamond, and Poof! You have a brand new Blue Diamond Earring... and you didn't have to pay the 3kpp it costs for one of these morsels.

Ok, enough ramblings... if you're on the Xegony server and want to ask me a question about this, feel free to send me a tell :)

Hey! Thanks for the input. I am only a 39 druid on the Innoruuk server, but I am scouting in advance to see where I should start putting my downtime. Guess I gotta get to porting though, because I am just a poor druid... Give alot of what I have out... maybe I am just a gullible Druid.. ah well...

But this in invaluable info. I appreciate it and I am planning on using your tid bits to help me eventually get that last shawl. Thanks again for you helpfull post.

As a cleric I'm not going to be able to enchant my bars to make back some of the money used on this skill... Does anyone know about how much p your going to need to make the non magic pieces to get it to a decent level for the quest?

Tailoring and Jewelcraft are all I have left the rest are all at or above the trivial for the item in the quest.. The rest were easy and cost very little.. these 2 I hate :/

I think I spent 500pp going from 70 to 170. I stopped there. I haven't gotten to this point yet in the quest, but I'm guessing 170ish should be adiquate.

Oh, I have 180wis, and 105cha. An average human cleric. I would not worry about making jewelery a career, getting it up there took no time at all. Just get a list of when each gem/bar goes trivial, and make the one that's closest to your current level. (When you get to expensive stones, jump over to the next metal with Malachite)

At higher levels I was blowing 200pp per stack of attempts, but I was making back like 185pp as long as the successes kept coming.

    My Shawl and some testing!
    # Sep 26 2001 at 10:46 PM Rating: Excellent
    Hey guys,

Finished my 7th Shawl last night. I was 158 Tailoring and 180 in all other skills. I failed a total of ZERO times an ALL 7 levels of the quest! Man was i happy i never got a fail (or just damn lucky)! Also, the Iceshard brothers in Kael are on a 2 hours spawn time, and there seemed to be no actual place holders. They were both up to start, we killed both and only one dropped the blood. After camping for 2 hours they popped as named and we killed again, this time both dropping blood. Another post mentioned you had to let some "Frost Giant Lords" pop, then sit a cycle to spawn the named. Well maybe but thats not how it happened for me.

And last but not least, here is a goodie for you all....

Not sure if anyone has posted something like this in the past or not, but i was being my gnomish self and decided to do some testing on my new 7th prayer shawl to satisfy my own curiousity. I have seen/heard many contrasting reports on what the true effect (Flowing Thought I) really did. Some say 1mana per tick, some 10, some 7, ect. Well here is what I was able to figure out!

I went OOM fully by casting nukes till eventually using a 5 mana spell. The first test i did was with out the shawl, then with. According to the mana calculators i have determined my total mana at 2812 w/o shawl and 2819 with shawl. Also remember that one "tick" is equivilant to 6 seconds RL time.

    *************

    No Shawl

    Time of OOM = 17:00:56
Time of Half Mana = 17:07:44
    Time of FM = 17:14:12

So from this we can gather...

Total Med time from OOM to FM = 13 minutes, 8 seconds
Total Med time in seconds = 788 seconds
Total number of ticks = 131.3 (788 secs / 6 seconds per tick)
Total mana regained = 2812 mana
Mana per tick = 21.46 mana
Mana per second = 3.58 mana

    ****************

    With Shawl

    Time of OOM = 17:20:00
Time of Half Mana = 17:26:42
    Time of FM = 17:32:28

So from this we can gather...

Total Med time from OOM to FM = 12 minutes, 28 seconds
Total Med time in seconds = 748 seconds
Total number of ticks = 124.6 (748 secs / 6 seconds per tick)
Total mana regained = 2819 mana (shawl gives 7 extra mana)
Mana per tick = 22.62 mana
Mana per second = 3.77 mana

    ************

    So here is the summary...

Difference between Shawl vs. No shawl med time = 40 seconds
Difference of med times in ticks = 6.7 ticks (each tick 6 seconds!)
Difference in "mana per tick" = 1.16 mana

So it seems that the effect Flowing Thought I is only an approximately 1 extra mana per tick. It may not seem like a lot yes, but keep this in mind....

Over the course of my medding, for the same given time for someone without the shawl, i basically gained 144.5 extra mana! Or think of it as I got to FM a full 40 seconds faster! Now think about how many times an average night of playing you spend medding. Hell im sure we casters can easily say we med from OOM or near OOM about 25 times a night on average EXP grinding sessions (assuming 5 hours constant killing). Thats about 17 mins a day saved of EXTRA medding you would have to do if you didnt have the shawl!

    *********

Well hope you liked the read for those that were intersted. Just some Gnomish thinking exercises I did today while i was bored. Least we all now know the effects true (GNOME) POWER!

I believe VI made us do all these trade skills (tailoring in particular) to make up for this item... Tanks have to do HUGE battles and most will never see the 10th ring. IMO guild's would rather help a melee than a caster since they are better on higher level raids and that would be the only guild that could do it... So trust me you would RATHER have the trade skills than doing all the fights, but if we have to have a HUGE fight for 10th shawl if there is one everyone spam verant with hate mail :)

But boy was I happy today!!! The brewing of the ink also wasn't triv to me at 147 skill. Everything else was except for the shawl itself.

Just a FYI for everyone. If you are thinking of hunting those cute little Othmir's for their skins to raise tailoring quickly... think twice.

Because 9 times in 3 days when I was fighting Sirens at the SG zone I got feared. And started going out to the middle of the water. And then got the message that I was under the world and being moved to a safe spot - right in front of the Othmir King! I petitioned and filed a bug report, but I would have been extremely pissed if I had died because I was KOS to them...

Is this the last shawl quest or are there more?
    RE: Last shawl?
    # Sep 14 2001 at 1:39 PM Rating: Default
My guess is that there are more, since Loremaster Borannin said there is another task after this. More than likely, the number of shawl quests (and the rewards) mirror those of the coldain ring quests. There are 9 rings, so there are probably 9 shawls, and the last two rings/shawls have some nice effects to em, but require guilds to complete, rather than individuals or groups.

I'm on Xegony Server and finished the #7 shawl on 9/7/01. WOOT. Final combine did not have a trivial message at tailoring skill 158. I got lucky on first attempt with all combines. Pottery at 188, Brewing at 168 Fletching at 194, jewelcraft at 183. Look me up on Xegony as NUMSY as he is the one with the shawl.

    FINALLY it is MINE.

Can't wait for #8. I'm figuring Smithing will be needed, since it's the only skill not used in a shawl quest yet. Maybe Verant will make #8 really easy to make up for #5, #6, and #7's level of difficulty. Yeah and maybe Lavastorm will freeze over. LoL

When you come up on the manor there will be 2 sentinals above the bridge and 2 below with a roamer. You can invis and go in the left door but hug the left side because a see invis guy will agro. Dispatch the first see invis guy and behind him is a 2nd see invis guy. He is a shadowknight and dropped some cerulean hat for me. (13ac 10cha 3svdisease 3svfire 3svcold bard usable - looks like leather. actually also druid usable for you droods doin tradeskills). To the left of the shadowknight guy is the hall leading to the 2 iceshard guys by a throne and 4 see invis guys also in the room.

I was able to pull the warrior iceshard guy (not varken) solo at lvl 60, but again they hit for 195 so if yer not incredibly uber I suggest bringing a bunch of friends.

Again, ONLY the Iceshard guys drop the Royal Kromriff Blood.

I just wanted to know what does exactly that effect do. Also, i wanted to know if it stacks with any mana-regen spells of necros.
