  • At the end of the previous quest, Betti Frostweaver told you to show your Embroidered Coldain Prayer Shawl to Gilthan.

Gilthan Brittleblade says 'So, you've been chosen to attempt the rune, eh? Been ages since anyone's even made an attempt. The rune represents the very essence of our people, our culture, and our religion. Take a sea shell runed with enduring breath and a small brick of velium and grind them together in a mortar and pestle. Add water to the powder and model the rune. Fire the rune with water and the best of firing sheets. Show the product to Trademaster Kroven.'

  • Head off to Siren's Grotto and kill Sirens until you get a Runed Sea Shell with one charge of Enduring Breath.

  • Combine the Sea Shell and a small brick of velium in a Mortar and Pestle (if you are a rogue) or in a Mixing Bowl (any class) to get an Enchanted Velium Powder (No-Fail Combine).

  • Now combine the Enchanted Velium Powder and a Water Flask in a pottery wheel to get an Unfired Rune (Pottery Trivial 162).

  • Combine the Unfired Rune with a High Quality Firing Sheet and Water Flask in a kiln to receive a Blank Rune (Pottery Trivial 15).

  • Now show the rune to Trademaster Kroven (also in the Thurgadin Exchange).

Trademaster Kroven says 'Fine piece of work there, _____, especially fer an outlander. Now yer gunna need to make a burin to etch the rune with. Once that's done ye need to kneel in the chapel and recite this prayer with total sincerity in yer heart. If yer plea be heard by our Father Brell he'll bless ya with the knowledge necessary to carry on. With that knowledge you'll take the blank rune, the burin and a fletching kit to etch the rune. Show Grimthor the etched rune and he'll guide you from there.'

  • Receive a Prayer to Brell.

    You say, 'What burin?'

Trademaster Kroven says 'You'll need a fletching kit and a fair bit of skill for this one, _____. Round up a tooth from a swordfish and attatch it to an Ulthork tusk wrapped in a Molkor hide.'

  • Head to Siren's Grotto and get a swordfish tooth from the swordfish and a molkor hide from the molkors. You can also get ulthork tusks there but they're much easier to get in eastern wastes where you can kill the low level ulthorks for their tusks. The swordfish tooth is NO DROP which is the only item actually forcing you to go into Siren's Grotto.

  • Combine the tusk, swordfish tooth, and hide in a fletching kit to get Burin (Fletching Trivial 135).

  • Go to the room where the quest started with the Grand Historian. Make sure Grand Historian Thoridain is in the room and stand at /loc -343.61, 803.92, -17.11, target yourself and then say the following prayer until you see a message saying you've been inspired:

You say, 'Oh Brell, Thank you for protecting me and seeing me through my trials. Forgive me for the things I think and say and do that displease you. Please reveal to me your will and bless me with the patience and obedience to do that which you desire. Amen.'

You have been inspired. The sacred pattern of the Coldain rune materializes on the ground before you.

  • On the floor in front of the Historian is an Etched Rune Pattern at /loc -319.28, 793.04, -17.11. This pattern needs to be combined with the Burin and Rune in a fletching kit. This makes an Etched Rune (Fletching Trivia 168).

  • Show your Etched Rune to Grimthor by the brew barrel in Thurgadin.

Grimthor Brewbeard says 'That looks about right. You're moving along well outlander. Next you'll be needin to brew up a sacred ink to fill the grooves in your rune. Take Iceclad Cutlass fish oil, liquid velium, and some Royal Kromrif blood, brew them in the barrel here then take the product and the rune and combine them in a fletching kit. Show Talem Tucker the resulting item if yer successful.

You say, 'What cutlass fish oil?'

Grimthor Brewbeard says 'Grab a pole and fish the waters in Iceclad until you catch yourself three Iceclad Cutlass fish. Place them in this oil extractor and you'll have whatcha need.'

    You say, 'What liquid velium?'

Grimthor Brewbeard says 'Collect a small piece of velium and a bottle of rubbing alcohol and brew them together in a barrel. It aint easy, but it should prove to be a minor task for the likes of you.'

  • Receive Fish Oil Extractor, a four-slot container.

  • Fish in Iceclad until you get three Cutlass Fish and combine them in the extractor (Fishing No-Fail Combine). This results in Cutlassfish Oil.

  • Find some Rubbing Alcohol (bought from either the Mortician in Cabilis or at the Icy Mug in Thurgadin - west of the four-way on your map). Combine the rubbing alcohol and a small piece of velium in a brew barrel to get Liquid Velium (Brewing Trivia 135).

  • Get some Royal Kromrif Blood from Iceshard Manor in Kael Drakkel.

  • Combine the Liquid Velium, Fish Oil and Royal Kromrif Blood in a brew barrel. This results in a Sacred Velium Ink (Brewing Trivial 168).

  • Combine the ink and rune in a fletching kit to get a Velium Etched Rune (Fletching Trivial 168).

  • Go to the jewelry store in Thurgadin by the Exchange. Show your rune to Talem Tucter.

Talem Tucter says 'I've heard of your mission, _____. I must admit that I had my doubts you'd make it this far. The rune's creation is nearly impossible for even the most skilled of Coldain craftsmen. You should be exceedingly proud. Many have attempted this feat and nearly all have lacked the skill, faith, patience and persistence that is prerequisite for what destiny holds in store for you. You are now ready to use this pattern to construct the sacred rune's casing and complete the runed shawl.'

    You say, 'What casing?'

Talem Tucter says 'Combine two platinum bars, a small piece of velium and the casing pattern in a Jeweler's kit. Take the completed casing and the rune and combine them in the same kit. When this is done all that's left is to tailor the rune to the shawl with the pattern. Take the finished product to Borannin, I'm sure he's eager to speak with you.'

  • Talem really means Loremaster Solstrin.

  • You receive a Rune Casing Pattern. Combine this pattern, a Small Piece of Velium and two Platinum Bars in a Jewelry Kit to receive the Rune Casing (Jewelry Trivial 152).

  • Now combine the casing and the rune in a Jewelry Kit to receive an Encased Velium Etched Rune (Jewelry Trivial 162).

  • Take the Encased Velium Etched Rune, Runed Prayer Shawl Pattern, and your Embroidered Coldain Prayer Shawl. Combine them in a tailoring kit to receive your 7th Shawl: Runed Coldain Prayer Shawl (Tailoring Trivial 162).

  • You can then go show Loremaster Solstrin your 7th shawl. Do NOT hand his your shawl until you have read the steps for the 8th shawl.

Loremaster Solstrin says 'Incredible! Never before has an outlander been skilled and determined enough to craft our sacred rune. You are now worthy of the Dain's most perilous task. You should seek an audience with the Dain immediately. Show him your Runed Prayer Shawl, he will give you the task that has been prepared for you. If the Dain is away show your Shawl to Chamberlain Krystorf and he will call for him.'

Just got #7...I could not face any more tailoring (ack) so I attempted final combine at 160. Had 138 dex 250 wis and the geerlok. Glad it worked out....but you DONT have to get all they way up to the posted trivial. Take a chance...glad I did.

    RE: 6th Shawl
    # Oct 09 2003 at 6:56 AM Rating: Decent
I doubt you will, i have heared ppl say however that it is easier/faster to take a gamble at 160 tailoring aqnd regain shawl 6 on fail than to skill up till trivial lvl. (beware even at triv there is still 5pct chance of failing)

    RE: 6th Shawl
    # Dec 11 2003 at 2:58 PM Rating: Decent
Forgot to mention that on a failed combine you do get the burin back ... saves you the hassle of having to get the tooth, tusk and hide. Too bad that's all you get back.... oh and that 5% failure on any trivial combine kicked me in the butt twice now for this stupid shawl.

You DO get the previous shawl back, on a failed combine. However, you lose all other materials used in making the rune.

For what its worth, I did get the sacred pattern to spawn 5 times today, out of 7 tries. Not much time in between attempts either, probably about 10 minutes as people ran down to loot it. So, the spawn time is not 1 hour, or 4 hours or any such thing.

Also, my charisma is 256 and there was a rumour that higher charisma has a better chance of spawning it. If you don't get it spawning for you, try to get a charisma buff and put up your steins, then give it another shot.

I still haven't gotten this to work, I'm standing on the 1st step of the left stairs (when facing stage) saying the prayer. At the time of this post, I have spent 2.5 hours in that room spamming the prayer without anything happening at all. 1 other person walked trough that room during that time, and he said he was working on 8th shawl. I didn't see him say the prayer nor pick up anything that might have spawned. Has anyone else spent this amount of time on this part of the quest?

as always, i'm glad i checked here. i spammed by the loremaster on the floor in front of the stage for a few minutes (where the pattern floor spawn is) and read down a little further here and saw the comment about the left stairs facing the stage. i moved over there, spammed ONCE and got the pattern. that quickly. nice.

I just got the dreaded "You lacked the skills ..." message and the "You can no longer advance ..." it's Trivial message on my attempt at the 7th shawl. Outstanding!!! You spend hours upon hours getting skills up and fail on a trivial combine. I guess I was just due a tailoring failure. Better luck next time

The trivials listed in the above description of the quest are not the actual trivials of the combines. These are the skill levels that the poster had when he did the quest and each combine was trivial to him with a skill at that level. Eqtraders.com has a detailed listing of the trivials for each combine.

    Just finished it **WOOT**
    # Mar 06 2003 at 1:07 AM Rating: Good
    K I jsut finished Shawl 7.
    here is my experience.

    1) About the shell:
ok I didnt kill sirens for mine cuz at lvl 54 it is hard and risky and I dislikegettin charmed and mezzed and stuff so I jsut went to bazaar and bought one (400pp) there were 2different kinds ones with Cloud (100pp) and ones with EB (400pp) they are named exactly the same so u gotta double check bfore buying.

    2) Small Bricks of Velium Bazaar (40pp) didnt feel like goin and killin stuff for it to drop real cheap

    3) Sord fish tooth got a group went to SG Evaced then its near WWzone there are 2 up at same time spawn time 24min we killed 4 spawns cuz 2 people needed the tooth

    4) Molkor hide Bazaar (80pp)

    5) ulthork tusks Charmed a Rhyno in EW and raped every Ulthork got tusk from like 5th one

    6) teh prayer both times it worked I was on teh left of the stage.

    7) Rubbing Alcohol u can get in Thurgadin in a bar so no need otgo to cabilis

    8) Iceclad Cutlass Fish is reall easy to get just fish

    9) Royal Kromrif Blood is the hardest part of this quest cuz Giants tehre see thru camo and it takes a good group to take them out. or a 65 Chanter who can charm one giant and work teh way inside (thast what we did 1st time and 2nd time we had a group) 1st time I failedo n combine

    MOST IMPORTANT:
Trivials listed here are wrong they are alot lower then the ones listed in teh quest. Like tailoring trivials at 162 but here it says 212. Jewl Craft at 162 here it says 182.

    my Skills:

    Fishing 117
    Tailoring 152 (non trivial)
    Jewl Craft 162 (Trivial)
    Brewing 168 (Trivial)
    Fletching 190 (Trivial)
Pottery 122 (Was trivial for all except 1 combine dont remember which)

I failed on Combining Royal bvlood with other 2 vials at berwing 158 (4below trivial) Brewing is really easy to raise so dont risk it =P

Runed Sea Shell now has Cloud
    # Mar 05 2003 at 7:25 PM Rating: Decent
I don't know if this is a change or if there is more than one Runed Sea Shell. But the Runed Sea Shells I have in the bank have a single charge of Cloud, and they will not combine with the small brick of velium in a mortar and pestle.

    Just completed the 7th today.
    Baking 191
Tailoring 160 (now after the combines was 158)
    Fletching 200
    Brewing 188
    Pottery 145
Jewelry 250(Im an Enc JC was a givin)
Few suggestions I can offer are these:
Tailoring:Work till 158 thats the max you can do on Wu"s then when doing combines USE a geerlok. With the geerlok I still got 2 imps on tailoring.
Brewing:I tryed at 140 with Geerlok on the Sacred Velium Ink and failed got pissed worked Brewing till 188 making Faydwer Shaker"s.
Fletching:Was already at 200 so no concern there.
Baking:Made Patty melts till 191 more than enough skill and easy to do.
Tailoring and Brewing I used Geerlok"s on both other"s were not a factor.
    Faction???
    # Feb 08 2003 at 6:15 PM Rating: Decent
Umm... yea lol iksar and ally by 3rd one? Lol i am a Half Elf bard and have finished 4th and im amiably and only threateningly to CoV. First of all you had to be none kos so no u werent KoS to start off and second im guessing you killed a TON for your 1st 2nd and 3rd shawl pieces (unless ur broke buy the 1st and second pieces in baz or spam ur donating for em) 3rd shawl not much faction involved on the killing side. Just a note that is a fluke and isnt going to happen to anyone unless there really dedicated and REALLY unlucky (yes even on the early ones)
    RE: Faction???
    # Mar 07 2003 at 3:45 AM Rating: Decent
A month old post but I feel a need here to remove your doubt concerning the Iksar's faction because I, myself, am a sensitive leezurd .......that and people who use the valley-girl "Ummm" in writing just makes my scales stand on end. :p Iksars, like any other race, start out apprehensive on faction with Coldain Dwarves. So yes, ally by the third turn-in is easily possible. Think about all the giants it takes to kill to collect 4 giant toes and 10 giants heads (they're not entirely too common). With the massive giant hunting and first two quest turn-ins, jumping from apprehensive to indifferent to amiable takes no time at all. The only faction jump that takes longer from there is amiable to kindly (the step necessary to become eligible for Thurgadin quested armor). And well, the third shawl quest is a nightmare. This iksar could have easily taken a break and gone giant hunting, played around with the Coldain Ring quests in EW while snow griffin hunting, etc. Maybe a few Thurg armor hand-ins too.
So no, it isn't a fluke.

If you fail on a combine at any point in this process do you have to start completely over again
I now have all the items I need for each combine but have gotten all my skills up to where they need to be currently have
    195 fletching,
    160 pottery,
    168 brewing,
    172 tailoring
    98 jewelery,
would hate to end up failing on the jewelery part and have to go back and gather all this stuff again, I know shawl would be returned are any other items thru this process returned.

Unfortunately, pretty much yeah. The only thing that you get to keep is the burin. Once you have that, you'll never lose it through success or failure -- which is nice, since the swordfish tooth is the only NO DROP component. And of course, if you fail the very last combine, you'll get your 6th shawl back.

I failed the etched rune/sacred ink combine once, and got sent back to square one. :-(

As per my post under the 7th shawl:

Only the single charge EB Runed Sea Shell works, it comes from INSIDE Siren's Grotto.

Say the prayer to Brell only once at the foot of the LEFT stairs up to the altar as you face it.

Pick up your pattern in front of the altar, right in the middle.

You can get the shell you need outside of SG in CS. Wizard friend was killing one for spell there and looted it (he donated it to me for the rez). But if you buy it in the bazaar there is not only the cloudy effect one but one called ornate (or ornately, not sure) runed sea shell. This has worn EB instead of charges.
