At the end of the previous quest, Rexx Frostweaver told you to speak to his wife Betti regarding the embroidered shawl.

You say, 'Hail, Betti Frostweaver'

Betti Frostweaver says 'Well, hello there, dear, it sure gets cold here, doesn't it? Perhaps I can interest you in a sewing pattern to pass the time and keep you warm.'

You say, 'I am here regarding the embroidered shawl.'

You receive an Embroided Shawl Pattern.

Betti Frostweaver says 'It will be an honor to assist you in fashioning an embroidered shawl. It is a very demanding product and I can see from the look in your eyes that you desire to burn your sewing kit in our furnace, but if you persevere, your efforts will be richly rewarded. When you are ready you must carefully weave a spool of sacred Coldain thread. Take the thread, this pattern, and the silk shawl and carefully embroider the pattern. The result will be most exquisite. Please show me if you manage to create one.'

You say, 'What sacred Coldain thread?'

Betti Frostweaver says 'Take a woven frost giant beard, two siren's hairs, two manticore manes and two Drakkel dire wolf whiskers, and combine them in a sewing kit. The resulting thread will enhance your shawl's power when embroidered in a special pattern.'

The Woven Frost Giant Beard is an uncommon drop from various frost giants across Velious. It is droppable, so you may find it on vendors in Thurgadin.

The NO DROP Siren Hair drops from sirens in Cobalt Scar and Siren's Grotto. This should not be confused with Lock of Siren Hair, which is used for a different quest.

The Manticore Manes are a common drop from A Manticore in Eastern Wastes. These are also droppable and may be found on Thurgadin vendors.

The NO DROP Drakkel Wolf Whiskers drop from A Drakkel Dire Wolf in the Great Divide. They're often left to rot by players killing for faction, so a quick zonewide /shout may net you one or more rather quickly.

Once you have all the components, combine 1 Woven Frost Giant Beard, 2 Siren Hairs, 2 Manticore Manes, and 2 Drakkel Wolf Whiskers in a sewing kit to craft a Spool of Sacred Coldain Thread (trivial 148). Combine the thread with the Embroidered Shawl Pattern and Silk Coldain Prayer Shawl in a sewing kit to craft an Embroidered Coldain Prayer Shawl (trivial 208). If you fail the final combine, you get the shawl back. If necessary, follow the initial dialogue to get another pattern.

Give Betti the Embroidered Coldain Prayer Shawl.

Betti Frostweaver says 'Spectacular artistry! I doubt I could have done better myself. You'll have to forgive me, I know time is short and I tend to carry on. This is the pattern for the making of a rune sacred to our people. It will be our final test of your craftsmanship and will put many of your skills to the test, but I trust you'll find the finished product to be more than worth the effort. Show Gilthan the silk shawl, he will set you on the path. May Brell always be with you outlander.'

Hello 6th shawl, next step 7th

I just got my 6th shawl on the first try! Woohoo!
I got my tailoring to 176 and had all my wis gear on. A really sweet enchanter friend gave me C3 and scarecrow form (she said the extra dex might help-- wasn't sure but wanted to do it just in case). My wis as at 255 and int was at least 150.
Guess now I have to work on fletching and jewelcraft for the next shawl. Gonna be hard to recoup bc my skill is at 0 on those two and I'm out of cash from doing tailoring.
Good luck to anyone else doing this.
Oh, I forgot to add.. I got the whiskers while just leveling up in GD. I got the beard while trying to get heads and toes from the giants. When I was working on the griffon egg hunting I killed some critters and got the manticore manes. Then I went to CS with a wizard friend. We went after the siren that pops up high over the tunnel to SG. I kept her chain stunned while the wizzie nuked. I also bashed the crap out of her with my shield and smacked her with my wraithbone hammer. She died pretty fast. We had to kill her a few times to get the hair. I think she had a respawn wait of 20min or so. Maybe a little less. Between kills we medded up and killed wyverns and junk.
I suceeded on my first combone of the spool. I actually had the pieces for several months before attempting the spool combine. I think I was around lvl 52 when I started on the 6th shawl and just got up the nerve to complete it at lvl 56 (the spool I combined while lvl 54). Hopefully I'll be lucky on the 7th shawl.

I first went to EW as instructed in quest intructions.........i got my 2 whiskers relatively quick as stated near the spires.......alot of wolves seem too cross here.......also i shouted for beard and got that too for 50pp while hunting for the whiskers........so far so good........then waited till ranger friend was online and went and got my 2 manes relatively quick....one little hint though....the manticores either con'd dark blue or light blue, but the 2 manes dropped from only the dark ones.......if anyone gets one from a lower coning manticore please post.........all i have left to do is get the sirens hairs...which seems the hardest of all.....i ported to CS and evac'd across the zone to sky shrine ramp.......i then sent eye of zomm down cliff to scout things out.......definately a chanter form siren there........what would be best 3 to 4 person group to have in order..me being a 57 wiz?
thanks for those who respond to this.

Anything, just have a bard. Have them boost your resists so those things don't have a chance against you. Also anyone who can cast resist magic.
Innate MR
# Sep 09 2003 at 11:18 AM Rating: Default
Warriors tend to have an innate MR on em. Try kidnapping a warrior and have them take the hits with a MR buff... my war is by far not wearing the best gear and his MR gets to 180ish easy by swapping a few pieces of armor I have picked up along the way. Add a MR buff and maybe a bard and youll find the spells getting resisted alot more from these sirens.
I did it !!!!!!

Trivial
# Aug 08 2003 at 3:10 PM Rating: Decent
I see lots of posts but no one says the trivial of this combine, I am fairly certain the trivial is 198 for final combine so those that are crying they failed for the 6th+ time at 140-160 this is why. You were taking a huge gamble. I failed 4 times at 159 before finally getting a success.

If you don't want to redo it over and over then get to 198. IMO it is easier doing this quest over a few times with 158ish than getting tailoring to 198 heh.

It wasnt that hard to get the parts over and over, and I got extra siren hairs when I went so only had to go back to em once.

Last night after a lot of hard work and with a little luck I hit the combine button and made my shawl!I raised my tailoring skill after Wu's by doing folable bearskin potion bags to 162 and LOY ribbons to 172. I got extremely lucky when a guild mate of mine agreed to help me go out to get the siren hairs - which were a piece of cake by the way as long as you buff magic resist - so I thought what the heck - lets give it a try. I buffed every stat I could imagine "just in case" and grabbed my geerlok. Thread was trivial but shawl combine was not. Funny thing is I think I will continue on with tailoring to make robes with the ribbons I made LOL! As a high elf enchanter of course my first choice for tradeskill is jewelry. I guess I will have to spend some AA to take the tailoring over 200 as well. Good luck to everyone and may the road to each shawl bring you as much pleasure and satisfaction as it has me.[We do not stop playing because we grow old, we grow old because we stop playing.]

What kit?
# Jul 09 2003 at 10:53 PM Rating: Decent
In the guide it says that you combine the hair, manes, etc in the kit. What kit does it mean? A sewing kit or do you get something from this lady to do it in?
RE: What kit?
# Aug 04 2003 at 3:57 AM Rating: Decent
You combine this in a sewing kit, I used a coldain one but think you can use others.

Using the RNG streak
# May 21 2003 at 9:46 PM Rating: Default
One hint I've read is, before doing a horrid combine like this shawl, do OTHER combines until you get a long streak of failures, then one success. NOW attempt your horrid combine, since hopefully the RNG's "fail" streak will be over. Not a guarantee, but at least a small defense against that 5% fail rate.
RE: Using the RNG streak
# Jul 04 2003 at 1:09 AM Rating: Decent
Also don't forget to zone, jump up and down a few times, crouch, sacrifice gold fish on an alter of cheese during the next lunar eclipse, and dance around the room clucking like a chicken.

RE: Using the RNG streak
# Sep 10 2003 at 7:25 AM Rating: Decent
One thing people tend to forget when dealing with statistics... 5% failure rating means that on any given combine... completely disregarding all previous combines and all combines after you have a 1 in 20 chance in failing... the simple fact is anything you do to "beat" this is just making you feel better.
RE: Using the RNG streak
# Sep 19 2003 at 3:24 AM Rating: Default
I disagree...the RNG that EQ uses is notoriously streaky. During brewing, I went 68 combines without a success or skill up. The next 20 combines yielded 8 skill ups and 18 successes. Remember, computers are incapable of being random...they just follow a programming logorithm (sp) that the programmers hope is sufficiently varied enough to seem random. (common practice is to change the time on the computer to a value and push that value through a complex equation to simulate randomness).
RE: Using the RNG streak
# Jan 31 2004 at 4:58 PM Rating: Decent
The word you want is algorithm, not logarithm. An algorithm is a mathematical calculation or process that is completely repeatable, and a logarithm is a conversion factor that allows you to algebraically add to determine multiplication factor, and to multiply to determine exponential factor....

Enough word lawyering.....))

Sacred Coldain Thread
# May 07 2003 at 6:00 PM Rating: Decent
Is the Thread lore? If I am going to keep going back and forth over these zones, I am going to make more than one thread and keep begging for patterns from the Dorf and combine in front of him till I get it. Anyone care to answer for me?

Thanks

The combined Thread is NOT Lore, but the Woven FG beard is, so have some friends hold extra beards for you ;)

Success 1st Try!!!!
# Apr 15 2003 at 11:21 PM Rating: Decent
Success on first try today with 158 taloring and a geerlok sewing thing. Final combine was not trival and the spool part was. Manticore manes were easy for me cause i just snare and fear. BTW i have 3 more manticore manes in my bank on Tunare server if anyone wants em. Woven giants beard i got when i was killing giants for heads and toes and most ppl will not lewt corpse with the beards on em cause they are lore and most likley they have one already. The wiskers were just a pain to get but got them in under 2 hours of killing (50 or so kills). Ok and now siren hairs. If ur a necro these are so easy to solo. Go to the SG (sirens ghetto) ent and u should see 4 sirens by the tunnel ent. These have the best vison and largest agro range i have ever seen. If u can see them they will nuke u so be carefull. What i did was just get in the line of sight of one send in pet and FD and let pet beat on it till it dies. Lots of ppl say not to use pet cause of charm but i have never seen these cast charm and if they do u should be FD so it won't matter. Got the hairs in under 30min spawn time is about 4-5min so get a KEI and u be fine. On to #7!

ok so on like the 6th try (lost count cuz i dont want to think about it) at tailoring 140 or so... i failed again. You wanna whine about how hard it is to find whiskers? try being a cleric that cant mine to save her life (yes... those greenies almost kill me regularly) and spending 1k AND PLing a chanty to 12 just for wu's... and failing AGAIN... i started these shawls cuz i love tradeskilling but a guildie teased me the other day about spider silks and tailoring and i almost cried... i have all the hard parts of shawl 7 in the bank if i could ever succeed at 6... i think i'll just lvl and make my guildies love me so i get all the FT items when we raid so i dont ever have to think about these shawls again. /cry

I have a lvl 60 cleric and she's now able to solo the giants and the wolves so hopefully you can get up a few levels and you'll be able to do it :)
RE: can i rant for a sec?
# May 29 2003 at 9:45 AM Rating: Excellent
These guildies that love you...

why don't you get a melee class to go with you to kill the manticores et al?

I'd rethink their love status if they wouldn't be willing to do that. Especially since your melee skills are the only thing standing between you and the brink of the 8th shawl.
Hard for a lvl49 ranger?
# Mar 31 2003 at 3:13 AM Rating: Decent
erm, im not sure how twinked you ranger is, but i managed to kill one of these manticores with a lvl45 beastlord, though it did take almost all my mana healing my pet, but they are easily soloed with my 49bst now.

Whiskers
# Feb 25 2003 at 4:49 PM Rating: Decent
Didn't keep track of how many wolves I had to kill (maybe 30 or 40) to get the whiskers, but one word of advice - make sure that the loot window is indeed empty. Maybe my gamma was too low or something, but the whiskers were almost invisible. If you loot and the window, but when you get out of window the corpse is still there, check again. There's probably a whisker there.

BTW I didn't kill that many, but they both did drop from a pack of 2 running up the hill by the Nexus spires. There may be something to the 'pack' theory expressed earlier.
RE: Whiskers
# Mar 28 2003 at 2:06 AM Rating: Decent
This is so true. After not seeing any whiskers forever, I realized how hard to see they are. I now right-click the first empty slot to auto-loot. No need to squint.

Much easier then Shawl5
# Feb 01 2003 at 7:39 AM Rating: Decent
Ok 1st off this shawl is about 5 trillion million gazillion thousand hundred times easier then Shawl 5, those wurm biles were a torture.

Heres how it all went for me.

1st off I had the manes from EW from Shawl4 since Ikilled those when I was hutin for griffins so with that out of the way I went to hunt for the wiskers 1st kill I killed was some wolf runin around like it had a rocket up one place...

so he dropped wisker..then it took about 50 more wolves bfore 2nd one dropped total time about 2hours.

then to sirens I killed about 20 and got both hairs in the process I got some scales for 70% reduction Giant bag which are extremely rare as it says here.

and beard I had from long time ago when I was raising my faction killing giants

and now with tailoring 115 im raising it and then gonna attempt to combine =)

bottom line.. shawl 5 took about a week, this tooke less then 4 hours

3rd try comin
# Jan 31 2003 at 3:17 PM Rating: Decent
1st try at 131 tailoring failed. I tried my second attempt at 158 tailoring, 280 Wisdom, and 257 Dex. It failed. This quest sux. now im back to killing wolves.
One thing that may help tho. In CS,just south of the SG zone in cave there is the perfect spot to kill sirens. I tried the SS spot and the cave entrance, killing tons of sirens for NO hairs. I swam underwater going south from the cave entrance and happened upon a small mound on the bottom of the ocean floor. 4 sirens there. The first time i went there,i cleared it twice and got both hairs on the second round. After my first failure,i went back and got both hairs on the first clearing. Mebbe lucky. You tell me, but i know where im going back to hunt for hairs. Btw, dont forget your EB item.=)
RE: 3rd try comin
# Jan 31 2003 at 5:38 PM Rating: Decent
ok first of all tailoring sucks big time! My skill is at 147. I made two attempts and failed on my shawl. I went back to CS and got 10 siren hairs, then on to GD and got 10 whiskers, then to EW and got 10 tails. Of the 5 attempts to make the thread I failed once. So now I have 4 threads. Went to Thurgadin and got a pattern. Failed 4 times in a row! Damn! A total of 6 attemps and I keep failing!

I guess it's back to tailoring. Why do they make tailoring so hard to do?? This quest really sucks because of one little skill...tailoring. I've spent WAY to much time on this crappy skill.
