We have a report as of September 12, 2013, that this quest may be broken due to a dialogue loop, making it impossible to progress.

This is the quest method of obtaining Ghoulbane. It is also a drop, which is described in the Ghoulbane quest.

Ryshon Hunsti is located in West Karana, on the shore in the southeast corner.

Hail Ryshon Hunsti

Ryshon Hunsti says, 'Hello _____. What brings you to the Karanas? Do you seek [enlightenment]?

You say, 'I seek enlightenment'

Ryshon Hunsti says, 'Ahh, i could see by the look in your eyes that you are looking for something more than just enlightenment. Perhaps you are looking for a [sword] crafted by a noble man.

You say, 'What sword?'

Ryshon Hunsti says, 'It is not just a sword friend. It is much more than that. This sword carries with it special [power], something unlike anything else within this realm.'

You say, 'What power?'

Ryshon Hunsti says, 'It is an instrument fashioned together by noble man. It is said to be blessed by the gods themselves. Only a man who comes from nobility may wield it. Do you seek the [sword of nobility]?'

You say, 'I seek the sword of nobility'

Ryshon Hunsti says, 'I see, then take this note to Kanthuk Ogrebane. I've been told he can be found fishing not far from the dwarven city.'

He gives you Note to Kanthuk.

Travel to Butcherblock Mountains to the boat docks. Once zoned in to Butcherblock; follow the path to the city and follow the path to the dock but on the north side. The same side you will find Walnan and Grindbar. Looking at your map; he is in between them. If you follow the wall down to the water and then follow the water line you should run into him. There is a big boat and he is standing right on the shore/water line at /loc +2202, +2996

You say, 'Hail, Kanthuk Ogrebane'

Kanthuk Ogrebane says, 'Hello'

Hand Kanthuk the note and get some experience.

Kanthuk Ogrebane says, 'Ahh, I see you have spoke to Ryshon. You seem tired from your long journey. Sit with me as I tell you a tale. A tale about a true friend of mine, a great man known as [Amstaf Trunolis].'

You say, ' Who is Amstaf Trunolis?'

Kanthuk ogrebane says, 'Amstaf Trunolis was a good man. I've followed into [battle] many times. We've seen many of our friends die by the sword of others.'

You say, 'What battle?'

Kanthuk Ogrebane laughes, 'I remember the first time we charged into battle. I was so scared. My hands wouldn't stop trembling. Amstaf pulled me off to the side before the initial attack began. He held my hands within his. I saw his hands begin to glow and felt his energy pass into me. I felt [courage].

You say, 'What courage?'

Kanthuk Ogrebane says, 'I'll never forget what he did for me that day. He gave me the courage to continue. No one's ever done anything like that for me. I vowed that day that I'd follow him into any battle. I'd be there alongside him, no matter what. As time went on we came across an elven woman named [Ambreen].

You say, 'Who is Ambreen?'

Kanthuk Ogrebane says, 'Ambreen was younger than he and I. She knew of the powers of nature. She was able to control the rain which fell from the heavens and would call upon the spirits to aide her. It was obvious that Amstaf took a liking to Ambreen. She ended up coming with is on out crusades. The last I saw of Ambreen was when we went to the snow covered lands of Everfrost. We were wander the lands when a freak [snowstorm] hit us. We were seperated from one another for quite some time.'

You say, 'What snowstorm?'

Kanthuk Ogrebane says, 'I don't know where it came from, but it was so sudden that it caught us all off guard. The snow quickly became unbearable. I tried to move to higher ground, but was unable to. I was stuck within the snowy confines. I didn't know what to do [next].'

You say, 'What happened next?'

Kanthuk Ogrebane says, 'As I laid there my body began to slowly freeze. I knew death was near and accepted the inevitable. Suddenly I felt something clutching at my cloak. I was being dragged upwards out of the snow. A hand pressed against my chest and began to glow. I felt energy pass into my body. Do you know [how] he had saved me?'

You say, 'How did he save you?'

Kanthuk Ogrebane says, 'He saved my life by laying his hands upon my body. A few moments later we found Ambreen lying in the snow, her body frozen by the harsh surroundings. We lifted her up off the ground and began to look for [shelter].'

You say, 'What shelter?'

Kanthuk Ogrebane says, 'We ended up taking refuge within a deserted cabin not to far from our location. We knew that we didn't have much time left to bring life back into her body. However, the storm didn't pass through and we knew we couldn't venture to far without the fear of freezing. I warmed the cabin and rested for some time thinking about what we were going to do. It wasn't long before my exhaustion took over. I fell into a deep [slumber] that night.'

You say, 'What slumber?'

Kanthuk Ogrebane says, 'That night I dreamt of many things. Random thoughts kept swirling around my mind. I kept seeing the image of a cloaked being and of Amstaf circled around a fire. I saw Ambreen's body convulsing above the fire as if life was being brought back to it. I don't know what happened that night. I don't even know if what i dreamt was real, but before I awoke I saw a [strange image].'

You say, 'What strange image?'

Kanthuk Ogrebane says, 'I saw Amstaf lower his head and walked away in silence. He was surronded by two beings carrying a torch. I don't know what it meant, but I swear it was so real. When I awoke both Amstaf and Ambreen were gone. Please find Llara and give this pendant to her. This pendant belonged to Amstaf. She too had a vision that night that may clear things up. If she asks where you got it from, mention my name.'

You receive a Pendant.

Next you need to find Llara. She is standing on a rock in Dagnor's Cauldron, just outside of the Estate of Unrest.

Llara says 'Oh my! This belongs to Amstaf. Where did you get it?

You say, 'Kanthuk gave it to me'

Llara says 'I take it you're here to find out more about [Amstaf].'

You say, 'Who was Amstaf?'

Llara says 'I've known Amstaf since he was a child. We grew up in the same city together. Ever since I've known him there's always been something [unusual] about him.'

You say, 'What was unusual?'

Llara says 'When we were growing up we used to venture outside the city gates. Some times we would encounter a wandering ghoul or an undead spirit of some sort. He was always able to quickly dismiss the undead being with very little effort. I [learned] many things growing up with Amstaf.'

You say, 'What did you learn?'

Llara says 'Amstaf told me many things when we were younger. Once Amstaf told me that life isn't about how you get there, it's about where you end up. I miss my dear friend. Its been a long time since I've seen him. The night of the snowstorm I dreamt about him. I remember seeing Amstaf's face. I saw something I've never [seen] before.'

You say, 'What did you see?'

Llara says 'I saw desperation. I spoke to many people who knew Amstaf trying to find out if anyone heard anything about that night. No one knew anything about it. When I had reached the dwarven hunting grounds I ran into a woman named Walnan. She kept rambling on and on about the power of the Orb and something about Magi`kot. I didn't understand what she was saying. She didn't know anything about my situation either, but she did tell me that there were others that may be able to help me. She told me that I should find [Ruathey].'

You say, 'Who is Ruathey?'

Llara says 'Ruathey is known for her ability to look into people's souls and find truth. Though I wasn't able to find Amstaf, I was able to recover his sword. I believe that by having his sword I am closer to finding him. Take this note to Ruathey and tell her that I sent you.

You can find Ruathey in Lavastorm Mountains, near the Nektulos Forest zoneline.

You say, 'Hail Ruathey'

Ruathey says 'Hello Chork .'

Ruathey says 'I see that you've spoken to Llara. She too came to me looking for Amstaf. Though she wasn't able to find her friend, she was able to recover his [sword].

You say, 'What sword?'

Ruathey says 'I've heard stories about a holy sword. There are many rumored to be hidden all throughout the world, yet only a few have actually been found. Amstaf had one of these swords. It is known for its ability to dismiss the undead. Perhaps by having this sword it'll bring you closer to finding your friend. Gather a ghoul's heart, Amstaf's Scroll, the Blade of Nobility, a noblemans hilt and place them in this [bag].'

You say, 'What bag?'

Ruathey says 'Take this bag and gather the items I've mentioned. I've been told that the Ghoul's Heart can be found in the estate of the undead, while the scroll can be found in the Keep not far from the Karanas. One of the others are rumored to be found near the dwarven city among the goblins. While the last should be found in the caverns of Najena.

For those of you who haven't figured it out, you will need to go to Butcherblock, HighKeep, Unrest, and Najena.

Your target is Crazed Ghouls in Unrest, Crazed Goblins in HighKeep and skeletons in Najena (named "a skeleton").

All the mobs that need to be killed are 25 to up to 35, and the items appear to be uncommon drops.

You combine these 4 items in the bag Ruathey gave you and You have fashioned the items together to create something new!

You are holding a Ghoulbane.

The Frogloks are a good race. Therefore an SK killing the Shin Lord for the sword would be legit. They made the quest for the Ghoulbane because of constant complaints to verant that its too hard to get off the Shin Lord because of the rarity in which it drops and that it's always farmed. And, killing Frogloks in Upper Guk also ruins beta neutral faction for Paladins because the Frogloks are a Good race and faction.

I don't think SK should have to quest for the item and they can't quest for it the way it is done now because any SK if they did not ruin their own faction are KOS to almost all the NPC's involved in the quest.

Quest Items & Selling

I have to agree with the few people that have stated that Quest items for CLASS SPECIFIC gear Should be NO DROPS. I agree 100%. Unless your a friend of a paladin thats another class, or a paladin that already has this sword or needs one aswell, or a guild member helping a paladin out, WHY are you farming for this item to make money? YES, Dont buy this weapon from someone selling it. That will lower the price and maybe even eliminate the sale of the weapon all together! Then only Paladins, or *snorts* (hehe, no offense SKs) ShadowKnights will be questing for this item as they should. BTW, I agree that ShadowKnights should have to kill a Paladin in GUK for this sword, its more their nature, prehaps Verant should make that the SK quest to get this sword, or make a new quest just for SKs to get this sword.
I dont have a problem with quests for items that almost anyone can use being sold, or selling components that you happen to loot that noone needed in a party, cause you earned them an others might be able to benefit from buying them from you. But, selling class specific gear when your not that class shows a lack of character (the player), and that you got nothing better to do then farm other classes items to make a buck and get rich of them. WHAT happen to the SPIRIT of REALLY roleplaying? NO honorable paladin should buy this wepaon, its a quest! Think of it as a right of passage. Your proving to yourself, your order, your god, and yes, your guild (if you have one) that you deserve to walk the way of a paladin, a Noble, honorable knight who helps those in need, and is a unyeilding enemy of evil. I have played paladins many times myself in Advanced Dungeons & Dragons (1 of the popular fads that is one of the reasons rpgs have become so famous and spawned games such is EverQuest, Ultima Online, Diablo, etc). Though I myself am a Ranger, I would NEVER sell my Ranger specifc gear to another ranger, it would be dishonorable to do so! Rather, I'd help a fellow ranger in their quest for say, The Ivy Ethced Gear (when I get some myself eventually *lol*). Or, I'd pass it down to a ranger that I befriended as a gift (if verant insists on keeping class specific quest items no drop) cause I feel they earned it. BUT, I do feel that ALL QUEST ITEMS should be No Drop, and that all the Quest NPCs for the class specific gear should only devulge the information to one of that class, it only makes sense. WHY would, for example, a Ranger like myself be able to get information about a ShadowKnight only item and THEN be able to complete the quest and keep it to sell it? I should not be able to complete the quest at all, why would such... shady characters speak to me and tell me anything? They should'nt. Im sure this post is gonna spark some people to think im whinning, or they themselves would whine. BUT, again, if your out hunting for this item only to selll it, your nothing other then a straight up merchant that wants to take advantage of others. These kind of PC merchants are the ones RUINING EverQuest! Let people Earn their class specific gear, let them earn their strips. As for, this Quest being HARD, as someone said in a number of posts down below, who was complaining its such a long jurney back and forth. Hey, thats part of quests sometimes. To venture into far off places, facing danger to fulfill a goal, and in the end, being rewarded for it, and then feeling Good that YOU ACCOMPLISHED something. You should feel PROUD to have completed this quest. Taking boat rides and long walks. Oh, and one last thing... Low Level players are NOT suppossed to get gear like this right away. Thats ALSO the point, there are quests for other gear for your class, or items that almost anyone else can use at lower levels. Your going thru the ranks, so.. TAKE YOUR TIME. Rushing only ruins the fun of the normal progression of this game. This is'nt an action based game, its an RPG, things are SUPPOSSED to be slow. If you dont understand that, then you really should learn patience, or, just stop playing rpgs. Thats my 2 coppers worth.

Well written and i agree completely. I never thought about having the NPC only give info to the appropriate class. exellent idea. i would also like to see the quest item istelf no drop. that would stop farming dead in it's tracks. when my wizzy turned lvl 29, he could group port and could make a little money from porting. some folks pay, some don't but on average i could do well money wise by porting. by the time i moved up a few levels i was by no means rich, but i could afford to buy any item appropriate for my level. however i didn't. it took a little time and work, but i quested for, looted a corpse myself or my group killed, or tailored myself every item my wizard has in his inventory. I don't have the best items in the game, but I have earned every piece on me. How many lvl 15 warriors sporting a wurmslayer in one hand and a ssoy in the other can say that? Bottom line, it seems that making the class specific items no drop, and allowing the quest npc speak only to a class that could use the item will at least slow down some of the farming and twinking.

OK twinks, go ahaead and start whining and crying about these posts.

just so you know .. when the quest was put in it was supposed to only be doable by SK's and pallies .. the code has a bug .. It will be fixed in the next patch so no reason to *****. Its not going to be no drop, but only Sk's or pallies will be able to quest it.

Put frankly, I don't believe you. There are, as far as I know, no quests in the game that are currently restricted as to what classes may perform them. There are faction issues with quests, yes. Often the item is No Drop and class specific. None are restricted by race, class, or what have you. Heck, I've *done* a portion of the Bard's epic quest inadvertantly once (relay race.) I didn't know what it was for, I just tried it out, got the reward (which was a sheet of music) then checked online to confirm that yes, it was a part of the quest. And no, my character isn't a bard.
RE: Bug

Heh, then you must not know very much about this game. Natures defender can only be quested by lvl 55+ paly's of Tunare, the reward is no-drop, and you can't even get the quest if you are not a paladin of Tunare. Helm of the tracker can't be done unless you are 55+ ranger of Tunare, same deal, not a 55+ ranger of Tunare no quest for you. So yes VI can restrict quests to classes, lvl, and religon. Expect to see ALOT more of this. This is the kind of thing that stops farming and mudflation dead in it's tracks and VI has to do something about it if EQ is going to survive.

I myself would be pissed if the sword went No drop, but ya know hwt happens, happens and no point ******** over it since it's only a game and it isn't gonna change your life... unless you are lifeless and EQ is your only way of exsistence, which for most of you it sure sounds like thats the case.

#Anonymous, Posted: Jun 11 2001 at 9:29 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Ok for all you non paladin and shadow knight classes out there that are reading this...YOU SUCK FOR FARMING OUR QUEST ITEMS. I am a level 21 pally and I am planning on doing this quest very soon. I am hunting in LoIO so I should be up to level 25 by the end of the week. I just want to say that when I get to where I need to go to get the drop items I need there had better not be any other classes camped there other than paladin or SK or I WILL kill steal without thinking twice. Last time I checked Verant put skills into the game (fletching, pottery, taloring, ect.)to make money and FARMING wasn't one of them. If you want to quest do your own %^*$ quest for your class specific items and farm them. I do wish that the Verant would make ALL class specific quest items no drop. STOP THE FARMING PLEASE!!!!!

She's right inside Lavastorm, once you exit the Nek zone tunnel. You literally can't miss her unless someone just caused her to despawn. I had to wait a few minutes for Llara to show up, too.

Here's a funny story... when I left Najena after getting the hilt, a halfling druid was busy KITING Ruathey. "Druids, " I thought to myself, "show them a new NPC and five to one says they try to kite it." I screamed at him not to kill Ruathey - she was a quest mob. He knew. Someone had told him to give the Ghoulbane back to her, which he did. He was kiting her to get his Ghoulbane back.

Got a tell from him on my way out of Nek forest... he managed to kill her and get the Ghoulbane back. :)

I have a Troll SK that worships Innoruuk, and let me tell you, his faction is so skewed away from these races that even after I eventually kill all the drop MoBs, I will never be able to approach them for the turn in, even with a Chanter helping me. Besides, I want to force the life from a bleeding, broken "Holy Warrior".

Well, look at it this way: all the quest givers are good-aligned mobs. We have a human in Karana, a dwarf near Kaladim, an elf in Dagnor's, and a Barbarian in Lavastorm. That does *not* make the quest easy for an SK. I expect most will chose to either buy the item, or else camp the Froglock, rather than get the fairly massive faction involved to do this quest.

To the guy that challenged anyone to email him, i wonder what your problem is. You say "bring it" ? Bring what? Nobody is trying to do anything but learn about a quest. Your ignorance taints any point you attempt to make. Pally's may not be the "best" class, but which one is. They all have weaknesses. I like the fact that i can fight and take a beating, and when it is all done i can heal myself, unlike other damage weilders like rogues, who can not cast and run around asking everyone for heals. This post has little point, but to the moron who wrote " bring it," i challenge you to a fight in the playground at recess, because it is obvious you are no older than 10.

i don't want to change the whole came, but there are certain items that should be no drop. the game is called "Everquest", not "Ever: camp, auction, buy,and sell"
#REDACTED, Posted: Jun 13 2001 at 5:11 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Don't be an idiot. If the Ghoulbane was made No Drop, you *still* would have to take a number for the camp, either the one in Guk or the quest. Most of the quest mobs are uncamped most of the time. If Ghoulbane was made No Drop, it would only make it that much more difficult to get, as then you'd *have* to do the quest, rather than having the option to buy it.

I got mine myself, I can say "Yes. I appreciate it more than the previous weapon I had purchased from someone else." At 21 this quest took me 3 days and maybe 10hrs of play time. I traveled on foot or boat to all the locations. I did get help from high level characters at all locations to actually get the items, except highkeep. There I camped the stairs with a full group of like level characters. This quest is not easy, but do-able at around 20...As for farming...try corn, and leave these weapons to the people who can use them...And to paly's farming...double shame on you! The ONLY point of being a Paly is do roleplay a NOBLE character. I dont see anything noble about farming unless you are planning on GIVING it away. Im not opposed to making a living, but not for this type of item. If a paladin wants a holy sword, he should earn it. Not buy it. That's my 2cp worth.

ok, i have a guild friend who is giving my brother a ghoulbane for a measly 200 plat,(they are still average of 2 k on my server) this guild friend is a paladin himself. he was doing the quest for the exp. did it once for himself and a second time for exp, practically gave the ghoulbane away. now its not as noble as giving it for free, pretty noble still.

I am a lvl 18 pally. I currently have a nice 2h slasher (Axe of Frost 20,48. Hit for 30). The problem is that I am looking for a good 1h slasher. I want the goulbane REAL bad. But I don't want to be a wuss and just buy one. I am seriously thinking about do the quest for it. I have some high lvl friends (lvl 48 cleric, 47 warrior) that I am sure would help me out but if they turned me down do you think it would be possible for me to just walk in to the zones to kill the beasts and have somone nice just help me out? I love doing quests in the game and in my opinion i think that farming items for a profit sucks. What is the point of having class specific quests if every other class in the game is camping the places you need to be when you are there to better yourself and they are only there to turn a profit. Sure its nice to walk into EC and pick up a Goulbane for 1200pp but wouldn't you enjoy it more if you got it yourself?

Believe it or not, alot of pallies are doing just that...going to area and picking up a group to accomplish that part of the quest. 18 may be a bit low, but it will depend on who is there to help.

BTW, ghoulbane for 1200pp....er..that price is dropping like a rock. I say 400pp in about a month..maybe lower sooner.

Don't be surprised to see lvl 10 pallies with gb soon.

Shion and I did all but the skelly in NJ and can tell you that faction doesn't mean anything in this quest. You must start it at the beginning with the first NPC in WK. He's along the river near the Pyrmid. We found that sometimes in the middle of the conversation the NPC's would disappear. Don't know if this is a bug but you have to wait and when they reappear, resume the conversation so don't freak out that you lost the item. The hardest was the location of the Crazed gobs in BB. The initial text is wrong on the location. +1300 -1500 is the location (Thanks Areena Flameheart for your post!) Also the text for llara is not accurate. Once you enter Unrest, we saw her right in the tunnel. Then she disappeared and was outside the unrest/DC tunnel on a big rock in the water. Swim over and jump up the rock and you can get the note from here.
Getting a Druid to port you is a huge advantage and timesaver. The scroll in the Keep is now after the last patch a VERY common drop in the WR on Crazed or Thief (MR is rare drop). Well that's it for now. If you've never done a quest before, this is a great way to start out. It's easy, the MOB's aren't too tough and the reward is great. Be Well and Good Luck!

I found the NPC in Lavastorm Mountains. She is indifferent to me (Dark Elven Necromancer), but since I had not done the other portions of the quest, she would not respond to the quest keywords. Are the other quest NPCs indifferent as well?

I have the hilt and the blade so far. My somewhat twinked level 29 shadowknight was able to solo the skeletons in Najena, which were blue and sometimes white, with some difficulty. I think I killed 8 or 9 before a hilt dropped, upon which I logged my sk and got on my 26 druid who was camped just inside the zone to loot it. I then ported to BB, found a group there camping the crazed goblins, and they let me join. Goblins were white to low red. Was there for almost an hour before it dropped. (50 or so goblins). Then I was too damn tired to continue, so I'll check back tommorow.

Here's what to do
For those you dont have a druid to teleport.
Go the WK talk to the first npc. His right on the sever line near along the river heading to NK.

Then go to HHk and kill "a goblin" or "a goblin theif" or even "crazed goblins". These drop the scroll.

Go To BB now ether go to the EC and ask for a TP or take the boat from freeport. Talk to the NPC located rightside of BB docks ( looking out to sea right).

Hunt "a goblin" or "crazed goblin" near the three stone face things. These drop the blade. These can be found in BB too .

Now go to unrest but before you enter talk to the third NPC. She is the one on a rock just ofshore of the cave entry to unrest. (i used lev spell)

Entry Unrest Just inside the left entry to The estate are the high lvl ghoul's (well about lvl 30 unlike normal ones that are like 13lvl)
And like all the drop monster they are about lvl 30. Hunt "a ghoul" and "crazed ghoul". These also drop lots of small bronze which our group gave to newbies. These drop the ghouls heart.

Then from there head to lavastorm and talk to the last npc she is found on left handside of the zone coming for Darkelf forest.

Lastly hunt in Najena and hunt "a skeleton"
there are four spawns of the skeleton.
One in the entry hall. One in the left tunnel from the orge campsite. One is to the right of the orge campsite along with 2 TT. Last one is in the cell like room next to the room with the false wall and dwarf part hanging from the roof.
Thses drop the Hilt.

ps These were all blue to a lvl 34 pally so there are no 35 lvl mobs.

Our group of three never wait long to get the items, as the creatures have no PH and spawn quickly. But if all else fail /ooc looking to pay 10pp to look hilt of nobility.
#Anonymous, Posted: Jun 05 2001 at 5:32 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Can't wait to get a couple of these and sell them. The price is going to drop dramaticaly in a few days, I better hurry.

You know, it's people like this guy that just kill me. I've been trying since I first heard of this quest to get my GB. And you know what? I've talked to the NPC's and now I just need to get the components, but I can't cause every time I try the spawns are camped. I found one camp with 2 clerics and an SK, and obviously none of them can use the weapon. When confronted, they were EACH making a ghoulbane to sell... What a load... I really hope Verant makes this weapon NO DROP to stop the farmers...

I am Areena Flameheart lvl 48 paladin of the Quellious server. I just finished this quest today it took me 30 min. to talk and be ported around to the npc's but waiting for the loots took alot longer. For anyone wondering in: HHK the crazed goblins or goblin thieves spawn where the other goblin warriors, seers etc spawn in the basement; Najena the skeletons spawn up at front just past the first large skeleton; BB crazed goblins or goblins spawn at pos 1300 neg 1500 not neg 1300 neg 1500; Unrest crazed ghouls spawn inside second doors pos 679 pos 107 next to the doors on either side. I accidently sold my first gb to a merchant I am so happy to have gb again =)
No Drop GB

Just because I'm tired of everyone screaming about making the GB a No Drop, here is some food for thought. If the Goulbane was No Drop how would we get the Fiery Avenger? No stop whining.

I was waiting to see who would flame the NO DROP idea, and I expected no less with the anonymous post. What is best is they weren't even man/woman enough to put their name to it. This was more of a test on how people express themselves on these boards, and treat those who post their views. All no drop would do, as far as I can tell, is eliminate the farming of a truly noble weapon. As far as the Fiery Avenger quest, it should not affect its completion.
