This quest lets you get back your newbie robe/weapon in case you lost it so that you can do the quests that require it. Hail your Guild Master to start the quest. Each class starts a little different, but the phrases are pretty obvious.

Toilmaster Path. This part is the same for everyone.

Then you get a Ragged Book. Read it (it is quite interesting). Then go to East Cabilis and find The Toilmaster. Give him the book and...

The Toilmaster looks at the tome and speaks to you, scowling, 'Very well Broodling, I have a task for you. I should make you work at the feet of my Froglok Slaves, crushing granite, but the lore of the Brood has a specific rite for this situation. Take this book and learn the will of Cazic-Thule. Read it and ask me any questions that you may have before you start your penance. It would be a shame for you to fail at this task as well... though I wouldn't mind destroying you.'

You receive a book called Rites of Exoneration. Read the book, it tells you to ask him for the hammer and a bag.

    You say, 'Hail The Toilmaster'

The Toilmaster says 'Do not bother me unless you wish to join the chain gang. Now go away or I shall have my slaves chop you as they chop this granite!'

You say, 'I need the Hammer of Exoneration'

The Toilmaster hands you a massive hammer and says, 'So, you can read. Good for you. Don't think that you're going to make an impression on me with that rubbish. Let's see if you can handle this hammer like you can that book, whelp.'

The Toilmaster hands you the Hammer of Exoneration, 4/60, effect: Bone Shatter, wt. 25.0. You have to make this hammer proc 54 times.

You say, 'I need the bag'

The Toilmaster turns his head to focus on you and hands you a dusty bag. He then returns to looking into the distance, just over your left shoulder.

He hands you Penance Bag, an 8 slot bag, in which you will later combine 7 Powdered Bones and 1 Flask of Bloodwater.

For now, go back to West Cabilis. In the building near the necro guild on the wall, there's a mortician. He's a skelly, but he won't hurt you.

    You say, 'Hail a mortician'

a mortician stares at you with hollow eye sockets. As he opens his jaw to speak, you are overcome by the foul smell of a thousand rotted corpses. 'What is your desire, master?'

You say, 'I desire a mortar and pestle'

a mortician moves with a mixture of creaks and clicks and produces a grotesque looking mortar and pestle set. He places the items in your hands and motions indicating you dismissal. You can feel the vile power of your god moving throughout the material that makes up the two items.

The Grotesque Mortar and Pestle is what you combine the bone fragments in that you get. It's an 8 slot container. Here's the part where it gets BORING. I went to Lake of Ill Omen, there's lots of mobs there that you can fight for a long time without causing too much harm. If you get low on life, cast leach or something.

When you do get 8 Bone Fragments, you combine them in the mortar and pestle and you get a white Powdered Bone. Put that in the bag. You need 7 of them. When you have 7 Powdered Bones, put one Flask of Bloodwater in there and hit combine to get a Filled Penance Bag. Then turn that bag and the book you have into your guild master.

    Necromancer version:

    You say, 'Hail Nihilist Zeegarn'

Nihilist Zeegarn says 'Mind yourself within Cabilis. We will not tolerate any mischief. If you don't heed my warnings, you may be sentenced to the pit of the Crusaders of Greenmist. You don't want that! Also, you should always wear your robe when entering these walls. You do have your Drape of the Brood, correct?

You say, 'I do not have my drape of the brood'

Nihilist Zeegarn says 'What is this?' the Nihilist barks in disbelief. 'You have lost your drape? This is unacceptable! Take this note and report to the Toilmaster at once. Read it on the way and praise Cazic-Thule for any mercy that you may be granted!'

    Shaman version:

    You say, 'Hail, Hierophant Zand'

Hierophant Zand raises his hand and looks up. 'May the wisdom of the ancients lead your soul to suffering and everlasting pain. Such is the will of Cazic-Thule. I see something in your eyes, Grizzer. Have you lost something... your cudgel perhaps?'

    You say, 'yes'

Hierophant Zand says 'That is most unfortunate for you. Your suffering will be extended on this plane, until you find your way back to us. Take this and read it on your way to speak with the Toilmaster. He will guide you. Yesssss...' You feel as if something is peering at you from behind the speaker's soulless eyes as the last letter he speaks transforms into a sigh.'

He then hands you the book.

Nihilist Zeegarn takes the bag and tome from you and in return gives you the item that you have been thinking of all of this time. Lucky, you... you have earned a second chance. Praise Cazic-Thule! You get your Newbie Robe back.

    Monk version:

    You say, 'Hail, Master Niska'

Master Niska bows with elegance and grace. You can see her arms rippling with muscles. 'Greetings. We are the Swifttails. We are the harnessers of the elements. We are the tails of discipline. To achieve rebirth into our castle is a great honor indeed. We can be identified by our adornments. You should display that which we have given you to adorn your arms with pride. You do have your bracer, correct?

You say, 'I do not have my bracer'

Master Niska says, 'You dare disgrace us?' She hisses at you. 'If you have truly lost the marking of our caste, you will need to take this note and speak to the Toilmaster immediately. Read it on the way and praise the will of Cazic-Thule.'

Your faction standing with Swift tails has been adjusted by 100.
Your faction standing with Legion of Cabilis has been adjusted by 25.

    Shadownight version:

    Human Shadowknight

    You say, 'Hail, Squire Gristle'

Squire Gristle says, 'Hail, Broodling! When you walk the halls of this tower, you should always display the status that you have earned within our ranks. It brings me pride to see the might of the brood displayed by one such as you while I reflect here in the tower. Do you have the tool of your caste with you at this time?'

You say, 'I do not have my kukri'

Squire Gristle shakes his head and growls. That is not good, broodling... Not good at all. You will need to take this note and seek out the Toilmaster immediately. Read it on the way and hope that your incompetence can be overcome. We do have a pit for you, should this prove to be impossible.

The Toilmaster looks at the tome and speaks to you, scowling, 'Very well, broodling, I have a task for you. I should make you work at the feet of my froglok slaves, crushing granite, but the lore of the brood has a specific rite for this situation. Take this book and learn the will of Cazic-Thule. Read it and ask me any questions you may have before you start your penance. It would be a shame for you to fail at this task as well... though I wouldn't mind destroying you.'

    You say, 'hammer of exoneration'

The Toilmaster hands you a massive hammer and says, 'So, you can read. Good for you. Don't think that you're going to make an impression on me with that rubbish. Let's see if you can handle this hammer like you can that book, whelp.'

You say, 'i need the bag'

The Toilmaster turns his head to focus on you and hands you a dusty bag. He then returns to looking into the distance, just over your left shoulder.

    You say, 'Hail, a mortician'

A mortician stares at you with hollow eye sockets. As he opens his jaw to speak, you are overcome by the foul smell of a thousand rotted corpses. 'What is your desire, master?'

You say, 'i desire a mortar and pestle'

    Turn in completed:
Squire Gristle takes the bag and tome from you and in return gives you the item that you have been thinking of all of this time. Lucky, you... you have earned a second chance. Praise Cazic-Thule!
Your faction standing with Cabilis Residents has been adjusted by 100.
Your faction standing with Legion of Cabilis has been adjusted by 25.
You receive 1 copper from Squire Gristle.
You receive 1 silver from Squire Gristle.

    Warrior version:

Crusader Zixo is the NPC warriors have to speak to get the Ragged Book for The Penance. He roams in the watery area in front of War Baron Eator between Smithy Krikt & Weaponsmith Grugl. Hail him and he says:

'Do you come to me empty handed, knave? Did you lose your pike?'

Just say 'Yes' to him and you get this message when he hands you the ragged book:

Crusader Zixo roars at you, heat pouring into his dead eyes. 'Do you know what this means, wretch? I will give you one chance to prevent your floating near my feet. Take this tome and go speak to the Toilmaster. MOVE, while you still have breath.'

There is hazy info on the factions required and who is on what.

I started the penance quest with those faction levels as a DE SK on live:

    citizens of cabilis: dubious
    brood of kotiz: threatening
    crusaders of greenmist: amiable
    legion of cabilis: warmly

All being at different faction levels so no mistaking on who's who.

I had to con everything since I'm still KOS to the necros. Squire gristle conned dubious surprisingly, so most likely on the citizen faction. Still gave me the quest and the book. The toilmaster conned warmly if I recall correctly and gave me the hammer. Then I had to go to the mortician which conned dubious but still gave me the mortar/pestle. I'm surprised they handed out the quests at dubious but it works.

Still needed to grind my necro faction so I went to the iksar bandits caves in warslik woods and smashed everything. With maxed dex it seems like the hammer procs 20% of the time or so. Not too bad, especially with haste.

Started Penance quest as a HUM Shadow Knight of Innoruuk (Aradune) at Warmly faction with Crusaders of Greenmist, though I've heard Amiable is the minimal required. The NPC that gives you the penance quest in your Cabilis guild is the same that you return final bag and tome to, not toilmaster or any other npc. Toilmaster frequents the tink and bauble bar between SHD/Shaman guild and bank in East Cab. Mortician is on the 2nd floor of small shop building across from the Necromancer guild in West Cab.

You probably forgot to hand in the book too. Not any book, the "Rites of exonoration" you get from turning your "a ragged book" to the toilmaster. I did that mistake too. Had to run turn in the ragged book and come back and turn in the rites so I don't get my bag eaten forever.

I started the quest at dubious as a DE SK and finished it as apprehensive it worked. Lvl 1 iksar SKs start indifferent to the SK faction so I don't think you need that high of a faction to start the first quests anyway.

I think some of these old Kunark quests are set to a chance of giving you an item back instead of 100% reward.

I have done this quest recently as a dark elf SK. All of the details listed are correct except for the last part: "Then turn that bag and the book you have into your guild master. ". For an SK you hand in to Squire Gristle. I would assume each class hands in to the class-specific NPC that initiated the quest - since it says exactly that in the Rites of Exoneration book you are given.

I used the combat dummy in the guild hall to proc the bone fragments and it went very quickly. The faction on completion was:
    + Cabilis residents
    + Legion of Cabilis
(values unknown as I was already max)

    The quest is repeatable.

Since it takes forever as you swing your hammer to cast and get the bone fragment, what I did was get a green conned guy and bring him to a corner where no other thing would attack. I used auto attack and let it swing over and over while it tries to kill me (but my hp keeps regenerating to 100%, without buffs. Again its a green con.). I minimized the EQ game (right now I'm working on my fourth set for a bone powder) and messed around elsewhere to stay amused. THEN! Every time you here the casting sound from the hammer, bring EQ back up and put the bone fragment in the Mortar and Pestle. Good way to not get too bored. If your any good at solitair have a go at that while you kill! lol.

Also, the hammer seems to cast in spurts. In other words, you wont get it to cast for about 3 minutes or more and then it will cast in 15-30 second intervals about 5 times. As long as your hitting the same green guy forever (since my bhunt skill was so low), it should work out alright timing wise. Hope this helped you avoid boredom!

Make sure you turn in the book too. I thought she took my bag and I was about to start over to give it to another GM. GIVE THE BOOK TOO!

Turn in your A Ragged Book to The Toilmaster. The book you receive in exchange, Rites of Exoneration, is the one you need to turn in alongside your filled penance bag.

DONT GIVE YOUR BAG TO GRANDMASTER NISKA! SHE TAKES IT AND GIVES NOTHING BACK! This flippin pissed me off! I'm gonna do it again and give it to the other main GM. HOPEFULLY, it works. I sent a bug message in since she took it.

ALL of the Shadowknight guildmasters will reject your penance. You have to turn them in to Squire Gristle, a Shadowknight spell vendor.

I did this. Got all of the 56 bone fragments, etc etc etc. Turned in the filled penance bag to the wrong guy. Oi.

Then I made a level 1 Iksar warrior, gave Vygan the note, camped onto my other warrior, and sure enough, he gave me the militia pike for the froglok escort fife and the traitor's head.

Not sure about the Shaman version, but for the Monk shackle, there is an npc early on who asks if you have your shackle. If you say no, I don't have my shackle, she gives you a book to take to the Toilmaster. The Toilmaster in turn gives you a book in which you read that you have to ask him for a bag and also need to go to The Mortician to get a Mortar and Pestle. The Toilmaster also gave me a 2HB with horrible stats that was needed to complete the task. The 2HB's proc was what is needed....
    Faction Hits?
    # Jun 01 2005 at 9:51 AM Rating: Decent
I'm interested in raising faction with the necromancer guild. While I don't need a drape of the brood for faction purposes (It's not used in the quest for the skullcaps) I am curious to know if this is a viable alternative to slaying ~2000 forsaken Iksar in Warslik's Woods.

Used to be, one could go AFK and let the Iksar attack you, and then let your pet finish them off - they'd be too low to do any real damage. However, due to my level, I'm unable to get the Iksar to reliably agro me while AFK. (I suspect some are simply too low to agro at all.) Thus, I'm resigned to manually slaying a couple thousand iksar to get my faction - all other avenues of faction increase are either slower or don't affect the necromancer (Brood of Kotiz) faction.

If the faction hit (Brood of Kotiz) is large enough for doing this quest, I could do the turn-in for the warrior item (I'm amiable to them) and use the hammer to kill forsaken iksar - thus killing two birds with one stone, and getting faction hits at both ends.

Does anyone know which factions get hits for doing this, or approximately how large the faction hits are, when compared to slaying a single forsaken iksar?
    Easy way to proc

Go to painleel, start towards the hole entrance, but stop by the pool with the Erudite Erandi Natasu. This guy is Ltblue at 56, hits for about 19. You can /attack on /afk. The bones stack on cursor, just come back every now and then and combine some. Don't worry, he will start off with about a 400 harmtouch, but other than that, he doesnt cast anything at all.

I made it even easier, did this with my 56 shaman, slowed him, crippled him, shazam, easy.

You can ask him for the hammer and then the bag without getting the book first. I tried this as I didn't want to run to Necro guild then back to toilmaster. Worked and went on to do the rest of the quest ;)

FYI, You can also Kill Goblins and Sarnaks and get bones using that Dang "Hammer of Exoneration"

    Apparently any "Enemy will work"

(found out while killing some sarnaks at the same time to get thier heads for the next quest)

    Just my 2 coppers...
