At the end of the previous quest, Loremaster Borannin told you to ask him how you could further advance your reputation with the coldain.

You say, 'How can I further advance my reputation with the coldain?'

Loremaster Borannin says '______! Thank Brell you're here. I was about to send one of my Lorekeepers looking for you. It appears that the information Tanik acquired is most perilous indeed. The Dain has called an emergency session of the council and I must attend. We don't have the luxury of waiting for an appropriate task to arise, you must advance as soon as possible. Unfortunately, I have neither the time, nor the components to fashion the next few shawls for you. Ask Rexx Frostweaver about the prayer shawl and follow his direction carefully.'

Rexx Frostweaver may be found in the Thurgadin Exchange, near the bank.

You say, 'Hail Rexx Frostweaver'

Rexx Frostweaver says 'Hmmm, ye be one o them offlanders, don't ye? I've heard some strange tales o yer kind so don't be tryin' any funny business with me. I know the value of a platinum piece and I'll not get cheated by yer foreign coin.'

You say, 'I am here for the next prayer shawl.'

Rexx Frostweaver says 'Gather five strands of crystalline silk thread and combine them in a sewing kit to make a crystalline silk fiber. Take this container and combine a glowing shardworm bile with three of the fibers to form a piece of glowing crystalline silk. Five pieces of glowing crystalline silk sewn to your fur-lined shawl will yield a beautiful silk shawl. Become a master in the art of tailoring before risking all you've worked for and be sure to let me inspect your work when it's complete.'

You receive a Glowing Bile Soaker.

Crystalline Silk Thread is an uncommon drop from various spiders in Velketor's Labyrinth. Glowing Worm Bile is a rare drop from various shardwurms in the Great Divide. You will need at least 75 threads and 5 biles, provided you don't fail at all. Combine 5 Crystalline Silk Threads in a sewing kit or loom to craft Crystalline Silk Fiber (trivial 51). Combine 3 Crystalline Silk Fibers and a Glowing Worm Bile in the Glowing Bile Soaker to craft a Glowing Crystalline Silk Piece (no-fail). Combine 5 Glowing Crystalline Silk Pieces with your Fur-Covered Coldain Prayer Shawl in a sewing kit or loom to craft a Silk Coldain Fur Shawl (trivial 115). If you fail the final combine, you will get your Fur-Covered Coldain Prayer Shawl back.

Give the Silk Coldain Prayer Shawl to Rexx Frostweaver.

Rexx Frostweaver says 'Splendid, ______, this is beautiful workmanship! As the Grand Historian may have mentioned, our esteemed Dain Frostreaver the fourth is making some important plans with his council. These plans will doubtlessly include you if the Dain deems you worthy.'

You say, 'Am I worthy?'

Rexx Frostweaver says 'To ensure your worthiness you must continue to refine your prayer shawl. Speak with my wife Betti regarding the embroidered shawl and listen carefully to her words. Hurry now, there seems to be a sense of urgency about.'

Wis Makes no difference in successes. Just current Skill level.

Still an unlucky combine, at your skill level.

The random number generator is a fickle, mean thing.

Some people go thru all 8 shawls, with never a major combine failure, others get stuck on trivial combines, over and over.

But, my advice, stick with it, the 8th shawl is awesome.
Clarifying trivials
# Dec 16 2003 at 5:56 PM Rating: Decent
Hi all,

There are several trivials in the combines for the 5th shawl .... the highest being the creation of the crystalline silk piece. At 160 skill, i failed once, and didnt get trivial msg on the combines.

Got the trivial msg when I did the combine for the 5th shawl, so I guess the posted trivial of 115 is correct.

Now working on my 6th :)

Good luck to those working on the shawl.

Finally completed this shawl after procrastinating my way through it for a few weeks at least. I have to say I was nearly shaking while doing all those combines just waiting for one fail to put me back to where I started.

The silks were the most annoying part for me as during the time I was collecting them, being around lvl 49 I had a real hard time soloing in Velks. However, once I finally got a group of friends to go with me a few times we were able to collect all 75+ silks .. yay!

I didn't really have trouble with the biles at all. I went to just check the wurms out for a brief hour long stint and got 1 solo.. then went back this morning with an SK friend of mine and we slaughtered everything that moved in the caves for about an hour to collect 4 more. Note.. the Broodmother is a quest turn in NPC with a tonne of HP, heh... don't try to kill her, just a waste of time.

Now on to the 7th think I have most of the stuff already for that, except for one more siren hair, ugh I hate those things.

I found a way to see them glow, even in the day time. Turn your gamma down real low, like to 50%. Then it appears to be night time all the time. If you don;t know how to do this, hit Alt O, then the display tab, then move your gamma scale to 50%, if you are like me it is probably up aroun 100% to give you maximum visibility for your human toons in caves. They light up like a Christmas tree, when you do this. I still kill them all in the hopes to get glowing ones to spawn, but at least I know ahead of time what its going to drop.

#REDACTED, Posted: Sep 07 2003 at 12:47 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) If you peeps would read the patch messages and try making a new char you would know what stats help you with what. When you make a new char and click on, say dex, it tells you EXACTLY what dex does for you. It helps in Fletching and of course your combat type procs, crits and etc. Strength helps with smithing. What is also said is that if say your a chanter and your str is low then its the higher of the 2, str or int. They changed this so long ago I cant even remember the patch. This was done im sure in part because warriors dont tend to have the chance at getting 300+ wis/int like casters do and most casters lack 300+ str. Well all that arent shammy anyways. gotta love the avatar spells. Not tryin to jump up anyones back door just figured Id toss in some hard facts about what does what. So if your interested dont read the boards to find out what stats you need, just make a new char and click on the diff stats... And FYI wis/int/str/dex etc etc etc dont help you succede in a combine, they only help you raise skill faster. Also in a recient patch they improved the chances for you to succeed at a combine thats already trivial which should help out alot. As far as I know if its trivial then its trivial, I dont think combines can get MORE trivial. But hey, like the guy said... geerlok = 50-100pp... Ill have one in my hand.

Again confirming the bile appears to drop only off the young and the elder wurms. Was able to single pull elders from the north end of the tunnel without adds. Youngs more common in the area south of the tunnels but adds are highly probable.
RE: Confirmed
# Oct 19 2003 at 4:15 AM Rating: Decent
The better your vision, the harder it IS to see the glowing ones, UNLESS its night OR you turn your gamma correction way down. Then the glowing wurms are easy to spot.

I got lucky 3 times with these.. Didnt have my gama turned down. Instead of hunting the wurms, I chose to pull a few each time I was near and doing something else. Each time it was daylight, and each time the first wurm I hit dropped a bile (lucky me but my dice throwing sucks!). Anyway, not a rare item, though the other two proved more difficult to get. Once I knew about the gamma trick, was easy to spot (only needed during daylight).

Also note that this trick can work on other mobs too, e.g. the griffons in JP that drop the Eye of the Griffon for instance. Anyone know of a complete list of those that do?

If you're trying to say that Dark Elves cannot see the glow on the wurms with the bile, you are sadly mistaken my friend. I have a 51 necro alt (dark elf of course) and I got my last three biles tonight, each off of the glowing wurms, which I was able to see from extremely far away.
The glow is obvious to any race/class combo if you know what you are looking for.

3 combine 5xSILK+4th shawl in Sewing kit

Which wurms drop biles - info
# Aug 22 2003 at 6:25 AM Rating: Excellent
After hunting excessively for biles I can tell that only ELDER and YOUNG Shardwurms drop the biles. I killed wurms in the cave for two days, got all in all 10 biles and all off ELDER. NONE biles whatsoever from ancient, guardian, crystalline, so dont bother killing those if you're just after biles. Drops off young shardwurms are confirmed as well, so you might skip the cave altogether.

I too have started hunting for the bile drops. I can also confirm that they do drop from young ones and that the ground does glow beneath the ones that have them. I have one so far and it dropped at loc neg6328 / neg 181 as it was crossing the river.
After also reading plenty of info on this from numerous sites i've come to the conclusion that 1- the bile is a very uncommon drop 2-your wasting your time sitting on this spawn.
The stradegy im using so far is i zone in and head to previous stated loc.........there r alot of young one in this area. then i strat killing them and hope to spot one glowing. I did this and got one within 30 minutes.
I zone out and try at another time.
I dont know if this is the best way, but so far im satisfied. I use the time not hunting for these grouping and raising tailoring skill.
I will keep track of the drops on my next four and will be keeping a diary of it here so look forward to more posts from or leave me a question and i will try and help........and also advice if someone else has some for me.

"blizzents fang"
stats are as follows on this item:

Took me 6 hrs to solo for the biles. When possible I used the method of turning down gamma correction two times I did get dropps when I did not expect it. That was during daytime though. I hunted south of caves.

Now I need my friends to escort my enchanter 39 Velks for the 75 silks. *Sigh*

I think that Grelok is actually a reference to a GEERLOK, which is a skill modifying device for tradeskills. For example, there is a geerlok hammer for smithing, that increases your effective skill by 5% in blacksmithing. Therefore, if you have a 200 skill smith, with a geerlok, his chance of making an item would be the same as a 210 skill smith without a geerlok.

There is a geerlok for each tradeskill. They all modify skill 5%, for the appropriate tradeskill.

Why does no one mention if the shawl poofs if you fail? It was asked earlier but no one answered the question. Does Failure mean I must start from Shawl #1 or simply mean that I must look for more bile?

First off, it's important to remember that if you have a low tailoring skill, then you should take caution to just pressing that combine button.

I have read a lot of post that claim what is trivial and what is not, that's all good and such, but if you don't have at least 140 Tailoring with a %5 geerlok in hand (140 skill + 7 from geerlok) then you are just asking for trouble.

People have argued what is required to increase the chances of success on the tailoring trade skill, such as high wisdom for priest class and intelligence for caster class or if charisma is helpful and such. From experience, I cannot determine the specific modifiers used when hitting the dreaded combine button, but what I can say from personal experience is, get KEI and a CHA buff from your local Enchanter, secondly, get a geerlok to add the %5 to the skill and make sure to do this in a lag free zone, hitting the combine button in the Bazaar is like rolling dice in the snow. Why you ask? Why not is my reply! You should be wise or intelligent when making tailoring items, you should have a charismatic personality as well, this helps you with karma, do you believe in karma? And the geerlok adds to your skill cause it does, never shake off a 5% increase in skill, because when you fail you will say, “Damn, I bet it would not have failed if my skill was just a couple points higher”

OK, so the 5th Shawl.

First you must have the ability to fight in Velks in Upper Spiders if you play on Brell, other servers seem to refer to that camp as TS, I am assuming that's Top Spiders?
With this camp you get the chance as the Frenzy and Crystal Eyes for your troubles. Should take you 2 hours to get 80 ( 4 stacks of 20 )if you are not sharing the threads with anyone. Suggestion: always get more than you need as failures are part of this quest so get used to it.

The Bile, what a wonderful substance, used in real life to break down fats and such in the digestion process, but it's more like passing a stone on getting them to drop! Be patient, kill them all and let Karana sort them out! Dynamic lightening is the ticket with this one. If you are not familiar with it, then while in game, type /help and then go from there or read the manual in your EverQuest directory on your computer where you installed the game. Other than that, just kill Wurms, doesn't matter which ones you kill as you will never get bile unless kill them all. If you got 50 wurms in the zone and none are glowing, which indicates they have the bile, then what do you do? Wait until they despawn and respawn with a glowing one? No, you just waste them like any other mob cause they are place holders (ph's) So you dont' think they are place holders? Then what are they? I will tell you what they are, they are mobs standing in the way of spawning a mob with my bile damn it!

Enjoy this part of the shawl quest, it's not as bad as chasing after Snow Griffins and praying an egg drops.

Good Luck and I shall see you on the 6th Shawl!

I found the post by Belgir to be helpful and at the same time ever so slightly annoying in that the statement "Tailoring is based on int btw"... ummhmmm.. Here here Belgir.. ALL trade skills as far as whether you advance and whether you suceed are based a GREAT deal upon int... not just tailoring... your post was very very informative and I appreciate it being there to read.

There are a number of good places to find info on how the various tradeskills work (eqtraders.com is my favorite). For tailoring there are a couple of things to consider.

1) Whether or not you succeed in creating an item is based entirely on your skill level in the tradeskill for that item. If you int and wis are both 60, and your tailoring skill is 150, you have the same chance of getting a successful combine as someone whoes skill is also 150 but whoes int is 255.

2) Whether or not you increase your skill level per combine attempt is based on the higher of your wis or int. In the above example the person with the int of 255 would have a higher chance of skill level increase than the person whoes int/wis is 60. (Evidently, Smithing takes the higher of int/wis/str).

So, when your are attempting to raise your skill, make sure you have the highest possible int or wis (depending on class, one will be most likely easier to raise). When attempting the actual combine, it doesnt matter, just make sure your tradeskill is above the trivial for that item.

I had failed the 5th shawl final combine TWO times, at 115 (Wrong trivials at eqtraders), and I was extremely nervous on my 3rd try.

I raised my skill from 121 to 146, with the geerlok in hand, I held my breath and hit the button - And I got the 5th shawl! =)

As the post below and mine confirmed, the trivial is definately below 146 with the geerlok
RE: Trivial
# Jul 02 2003 at 1:07 PM Rating: Decent
the trivials posted are correct, but you should have at least 15 more skill points than the trivial in order to get a decent (95%) success rate. "Trivial" just means you no longer gain xp from the combine.
