Just did this with my Lvl 9 High Elf Cleric on TLP.

Ghasts conned White or Yellow, and took about 8 or 9 kills to get the 4 hearts.

Really easy with Sense Dead & Ward Undead firing away.

Earned my about 20% exp towards Lvl 10, only took about 1 hour play time and is a decent neck piece for that level!

As a level 4 Half-Elf Druid, I was able to complete the bone chip portion multiple times. I was told my faith was not strong enough for the Initiate portion.

I can confirm the rancorous ghasts are capable of spawning as early as 8:00 pm game time.

I would begin clearing the wandering undead around 5:00 pm game time to spawn the ghasts, then stop at 6:00 am game time to allow everything to repop before continuing the following "game" night.

That being said, this quest was trying on the nerves. It's still a fine item, being a free root, but you definitely have to "want" this item to get past the ghast grind. I averaged 1 heart for every 10 kills, with 1-3 ghasts spawning per game night. That lead to quite a number of real-life hours... be prepared for a commitment.

edit* Oh, and do yourself a favor to help speed up the process; while camping the ghasts, always be certain to clear the bottom step of the undead obelisk (little totem/statue structure), so that you have a shot of spawning the dark elf necromancer required for the next step of this quest. Like the hearts, he was painful to grind out time wise.

    Ghast, and necklace info.

    Hi folks.

1st of all this is a good necklace quest, or at least I think so. My brother talked me into it at first, and I laughed. Now, being a 63 Druid, I finally deleted the 3rd one, with root, out of my bank. I do remember, it has saved my life before, helped me get my Elysian Armor, and I used it for a long time, equiping, when I needed.

I looked at the 1st necklace, and thought 50% haste, for free, would be awsome, so I redid quest. I turned in the 4 hearts, and I got them back, as they were not needed. Thats when I deleted my 3rd necklace, with root. After that Yeolarn took the hearts and I got the necklace. Sure I got the free haste... hehe, it lasts 2 ticks. Oh well. I will prolly MQ it with my 2nd acct, Druid.

The undeads that spawn from midnite - 6AM game time, will usully be ghasts. So kill all the undead roamers from 8 - 10 PM (game time)

At level 8 you had better be careful. With all the red mobs now in the zone, even my 21 Cleric must run to zone quite often. Unless you have a high level tracker, who is also killing for you, this is a very frustrating quest. I have killed about a dozen ghasts between evac runs, but not a single heart yet.

Yes this can be MQ'd -- the person who wants to get the neclace must have ONE heart at the very least.

Those turning in the other three hearts give Yeolarn thier hearts *first* and then back the heck away.

The cleric gives the 4th heart and such and gets the thingie.

If you do this in the wrong order whoever turns in the last heart(s) to bring the total up to four will end up with the neck thing.

    Hello,

Been trying to do the quest since about level 12. I am now a level 35 Druid, and have seen NO hearts drop ever. I play on the Firiona Vie server, but this shouldn't be a problem. I have killed perhaps a hundred ghasts, but no hearts. What gives? Any suggestions would be helpful.

    # Feb 10 2005 at 4:11 PM Rating: Default
Yeah, this is why they only put Trivial Loot Code in on Firiona Vie server. At the moment people are leaving EQ in droves for other games but at the time had this code gone in EQ would be nothing but a memory now. For some reason a genious at sony thinks that gaining power by levelling and getting armor is a reward in itself and you don't need to be able to assert that power over lower creatures that you couldn't as easily defeat before but now can to gain profit. That's all well and good for idiots but as we can see by the population of FV server, it is a terrible idea that almost killed EverQuest, instead of the bad ideas that are slowly choking the life out of Everquest now...

The hearts are flagged as Magic, so your being on Firiona Vie IS a problem I'm afraid.

I completed this quest as a Druid , now I'm going to try as a Cleric.

I left a very long post with regards to Initiate and Dicsiple on Dicsiple board - so check that out for details.

I would say that yes they spawn at night, yes the more undead that is wandering around that you kill the more frequent they will pop.

But they don't drop too often, at least they didn't for me- but it may have been my level.

I started fairly low, before I had Wolf Form spell, and the brownies were too much to contend with.

After I had WF I came back , and tracked all undead and all Ghasts.

This took me a couple days - that's real days not EQ days...to get all four.

Brownies and paitence proved to be the only obstacles - for at level Circa 18 when I continued the quest - the Ghasts are green and an easy kill.

    Good luck.

I just recently completed this entire series of quests and got the final product the warden symbol of tunare. I am placing a post about how I did each part of the quests in their respective threads. In regards to the initiate quest, you must first know that ghasts only spawn between 10pm to about 6am. The are not random spawns, they are triggered by killing wandering undead mobs such as skeletons. NOT the undead mobs at the necro/undead camp that you will need to camp for the next part of the quest, but rather those few other skeletons that wander around aimlessly. The drop rate of ghast hearts has been increased to about one in three. Ghasts also will not despawn until they are killed. As you are hunting for ghasts I would also keep in mind the next part of the quest for the disciple symbol and camp the necro. I will tell you how I got him to spawn in the disciple symbol thread.

I completed this quest in about 3 hours, would have been quicker if not for the brownies. The ghasts pop all over the zone so you will have to venture a bit. I bound myself at GFay zone ventured out to find ghasts then when trouble appeared I gated back. Worked well for me ! Good luck all!

I’ve been trying to finish this quest for over 20 levels now and the better part of a year. From reading the posts it looks like I just have rotten luck in LFay. I was camping the necro and hunting ghasts at the same time. After days and days and days of camping, I never got the necro to spawn. All I ever got were the placeholders. And after killing over 50 ghasts I only found 1 heart. I even had my guild join me one evening and we never got the necro or a single heart. Eventually, with a couple of friends helping me, we managed to get the necro to spawn and I got both heads and the crate. I even managed to get a second heart. And of course, as I hunted for hearts that day the necro spawned two more times. At least the last time I was able to help someone else get the heads and crate he needed. As things stand now, I still need two hearts and the pouch of red dust for the final symbol. I have everything else. And I just found out that a friend who has give up on this quest has two hearts in the bank. So we are going to try to multi quest the first symbol.

    Dangers of the zone:
As others have stated, the main dangers in this zone are the brownies. If you can take wolf form then you will be fine. You can also try to keep camo up, but it will drop every time you attack an undead and if a brownie is near you… But for me, the true danger of this zone is Equestria the Corrupted. That damn black horse has attacked me more times than I like to remember. It can, by the way, see through camo and it hates wolves. I believe its level is in the low to mid forties, but it’s also a spell caster and it hits very hard. And it was up almost every single time I entered the zone. The day I got my crate and second heart a kind 60th level druid killed the beast for us. And I swear it can detect people from half way across the zone. So be very careful. And if you have someone of helping you that is of the evil bent, have them stay clear of the Pained Unicorn. A lizard monk friend found out the hard way that she doesn’t take kindly to evil creatures in her zone.

So if you get the items you need quickly, count your blessings. And if you are having rotten luck like I am, just keep at it. You’ll eventually get your prize.

Three words for you my friend... Charisma Charisma Charisma! After several days and many C3's I finally got a shamie to buff my charisma... I had 2 hearts and a lot of heart ache... but with the buff the next two ghasts (in the same nite) dropped the hearts. Try it out.

    # Jun 01 2003 at 1:26 AM Rating: Decent
Charisma will NOT affect any drop rates of any items. the drops are determined when the creature is first spawned.

You don't need to kill unicorns, but Ire ghasts. They are level ~15 undeads, and the hearts you need are NO DROP so you need to have at least 1 heart in your little cleric's inventory.

You can indeed multiquest this, but be sure the other char takingpart into the MQ has approriate faction with clerics of tunare .. which means no killing in PoG etc.

I doubt an SK would have a good faction with them.

The ghast hearts can be a real you-know-what. There are a lot of rumors of "when do they spawn" and "how are they triggered." It IS true that they spawn in place of undead mobs. It is NOT true that they only spawn at night. While camping the necro at the obelisk, I spotted numerous ghasts running around in mid-day. Some clerics came by, killed them all, got some hearts, and then continued to kill all undead mobs in the zone, and more and more of the ghasts popped.

    # Oct 31 2002 at 8:42 AM Rating: Decent
The best way to do this is to go after the ghast with track if you are a druid and at the same time look for the skeletons. Since the ghasts don't like the day time then kill the skeles untill the ghast come back. Once you have all of the chips and hearts go and turn in the bones then the hearts and kill two birds with one stone then you can wait for ever to get the other dudes for the next step to appear.

The only good thing is at lvl 8 u dont lose all your stuff, its those damn unicorns and brownies that get ya, so low lvls watch out!

In the old days, this zone wasn't as dangerous as it is now. When I first created my Druid in 2000, I camped the Orcs and the Bandits from level 8 to level 14 - only had to watch out for the wandering mummy's back then.

They only spawn once per night thats it not twice usually around 9pm or after right at the pixie tower....and they dont drop the hearts that often ive killed like 10 and only 2 hearts....and if no one killed the spawn from the night before there maybe more they start at the pixie tower and walk there way to the Greater faydark zone i have found

I am a lv 26 paladin on tholuxe... I have found that the best way to find the ghasts is to be busy doing something else. never knew about this quest until a few days after my LFay trip. Indeed they do olny spawn at night, but are just as annoying in the daytime. I ran into about 20-30 of these running around near the pixie tower, they all attacked me, and all died quickly. only one DIDN'T drop the heart thing. I disreguarded these and decided to just look it up later. I went back once i knew there was an actual possibly worthwhile quest for them i went back to LFay, in about 5 days i haven't seen a single one. as soon as i got into a fight (rather i was running for my life) with a brownie scout I had 2 aggro on me... I zoned and waited a few second for them to go away from the zone and the brownie finished off the second one and reaggroed on me.

TIP: don't try to find them they find you! (unless you are really bored)

    GOOD LUCK TO ALL

    Questions answered:

This quest can be done in less than an hour depending upon your level. If you're a solo cleric or druid that may need to melee you will want this necklace.

    1. you can not turn in 2 hearts now and 2 hearts later, it will not work. you need to turn them all in 1 per slot at the same time
    2. dont bother turning in stacks of the bone chips guys, all he needs is 4, 1 per slot. After you've done this once, you can turn in the hearts.

Now then, about the ghasts. They look like zombies in lesser faydark. Your greatest threat in lesser faydark [other than not knowing where you're going] are the brownies that run around. Stick to the right zone wall after you enter lesser faydark. Walk it for about 2 minutes and stop. Get out your "sense the dead" spell and work on your skills. There will be 2 ghasts that pop at exactly 9pm game time [even though yes you can find them at any time of the day wandering around]. If your sense the dead heads you into any other direction for any other dead mob don't leave the area, just keep walking up and down that side of the zone wall and using your sense heading until you get a ghast. Both of them drop the heart each time. It took me 3 days of running around the zone killing every undead thing I could find until I discovered the pattern. Once I wrote the location down, checked the time, and tested it, and they both dropped, I knew I had a pattern.

    I wish you luck!
