Here is the most up-to-date and accurate information I have. I am level 35, cleric, on Rodcet Nife. I have been in Lesser Fay this entire past long weekend... anyway, on to the info.

All weekend, I only had the necro spawn twice. The placeholder for him spawns on the lower step of the undead obelisk(approx. 0, pos 2200) and takes about 15 minutes, real life time, to respawn... this means that the in-game time goes forward about 4-5 hours between the spawns. I found that killing the placeholder(usually a skeleton) at around 8pm game time would have another pop around midnight, and that was usually the necro. When the pop was at different times, say, 2am, it was always a skeleton. Luck? Chance? Maybe, not sure. Also, only once during the weekend I had the Ghoul Boss spawn. He was NOT on the upper step of the obelisk, he was on the hill right in front of the obelisk. High blue to me, 35 cleric. Fear kited him and had no problems.

The first time I killed the necro, I gated to Steamfont and waited there for two full minutes for the courier. I was standing around the gnomes but no courier ever showed up. I eventually found him safe and sound in the Tier`Dal camp :(

The second time I killed the necro, I immediately ran to the Tier`Dal camp and waited on the hill just to the east of the camp. I was standing at approximate loc of neg 780, pos 980, facing east. After about 30 seconds, the courier came running straight towards me, from the east. Rooted, and blasted twice for 265 each. He was still alive after that so I had to melee him for a few hits before he went down.

The ghasts are the longest part of the whole quests. I've killed about 13 and have only 2 hearts. What I usually do is camp for the necro, and kill the surrounding static undead. After the four static undead around the obelisk are dead, I cast Sense Dead. For the next 15 minutes or so, I hunt the sensed dead and eventually will get one or two ghasts per hour or so. They seem to spawn at different times, but mostly during the night. You will find an odd one at 5pm or so sometimes.

The Warden part of the quest has great information posted already, so no need for me to say anything about that part.

Another shining example of EQs "evercamp" Idea. In the time you invest to camp these ghasts (12 hours for me and a grand total of total 1 heart) you can just go out and get XP and either go after something that drops a beter item, or buy something better.
Dont get me wrong I love doing quests but realisticaly, its not worth the time invested.
Don't think its supposed to be "camp"

I think its not supposed to be a "sit down" camp for extended periods of time. I think its more like a check back sometimes camp.

Using the check back sometimes method, 2 of my twinks are in jboots while I've never actually camped them (killed 4 ph and got AC on the 4th once, another time was bound there and gated on a lark after the server was up.. boom, AC up .. no other players around) killed wiltin like 8 times while never camping him (quiver in bank still missing one elusive arrow while usually now when I kill him it rots on his corpse since no one in the zone wants it)

I've also got the fishbone earring like 3 times doing this. I'm certain that the camps I've mentioned are far more rare than the ghast/ghast hearts also.

The degree of randomness makes camps like these a bit like a big lottery; buying more than one ticket really does not increase your chance to win.

Yes, that is very true. Many other MOBs are more rare and their desired drops are more rare.

Still, the fact that the Initiate Quest is pretty much a newbie quest(given after you turn in your bone chips) and the reward isn't anything great makes the camping of ghasts almost unbearable. All weekend, and two days of not leaving Lesser Fay nets me 3 hearts. For that time, I could have leveled up in Velious, while replacing most of my bronze armor(leggings, boots, bracer) and Purity Belt instead of getting... 3 ghast hearts. Not even enough for the Initiate necklace. Then again, the Warder Symbol will look very nice on my Roleplaying Cleric.

It seems only a few lucky ones have beeen able to find Ghast hearts fairly quickly (8 hours) I think you might want to change the level of completion to 20 or higher due to the fact it seems the only way you can kill the ghast is to track them and druids cant do that til 20.

This quest is the worst ever! I have slained over 10 ghasts, and only got 2 hearts. The ghasts only spawn at night, and you have to run all over the damm place to kill the PH's. This is an Initiate quest, and i have been on it for 3 days now (not straight though). Even if you kille th PH you are not sure a Ghast will spawn, so you might spend several EQ nights with no Ghasts at all. The reward also isnt that good, im only doing this for the later quests. I really hope this is the worst :-(

The Ghasts do not only spawn at night. The last one I found was at 4pm in the afternoon. Killing the other undead doesn't seem to make any difference either, the ghast is an uncommon spawn and rarely has a heart. I have tracking and wolf form, but have only been able to locate about one ghast per EQ day. Very lengthy and time consuming quest.

If your doing the ghast quest, all you need to give the Bronzeleaf is 4 seperate bone chips.

Thanks to the post by MJRognstad, I have been setting up camp at the other Derv/bandit camp, close to the North wall. During one EQ night I was able to sense more Ghasts than I could shake a stick at. Killed roughly 4-5 but only got 3 hearts. /mumbles something about how they should drop everytime.

But then the next night period, there were hardly any Ghasts to be found. And then during the 3rd night time I had to compete with 2 druids in wolf form. That's always fun. Anyway, back to the camp. I did not wander far from these bandits, always returning to them after I chased down the Ghasts.

The importance of this is, I did NOT have an encounter with a single brownie. Now there are some brownie's near by, so you can't wander to far to the West. But so far it has been a deathless camp for me.

Well I had some great success last night in camping the ghasts, though i was only on for a minute.

I am a 24 Druid, and I was grouped witha 21 Druid. Since it was too risky for him to track the wanderers, what we did was have him stay up at the monument where the static skellies pop and he cleared them. I ran around the zone and cleared the wanderers. We got 5 Ghasts in 30 minutes that way, of course only one drops the heart, then we roll for who gets the heart. Best Ghast pops that I've gotten.. FWIW I kept a log of all ghast spawns that I find and their locs have all been in the positive.

OK, so a relatively new player with a 14th season druid hears about an Initiate quest. Allakhazam says minumum level is 8. I don't even know where Kelethin is, but I TP for the first time and go.

From the sounds of it, I'm going to get smoked by brownies, aren't I?

Should I even try this quest?

Correct me if i am wrong(coz i don't really know, and don't bother flaming me about not posting when i don't know coz i already know i suck) but if you start in Surefall Glade don't you have to worship Karana. if so then don't bother coz you can't use it, and if not it would prolly be best to wait til wolfform though with sow as a cleric and being bound just inside the zone i don't usually have a problem with the scouts. the first time one appears in my target or i hear one cast its 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 9 (my gate button) and i have yet to die...k am rambling, time to take my medication.

I killed 7 ghasts last night, died 3 times to brownies, I got two hearts. Fairly frustrating neh? All conned blue to a 13th level druid. As a side note, the first time I ever ran into one was at that bandit camp so they're pathing might have them going across it. Personally I'm just going to camp there tonight and hope that no brownies pop near me again.

    # Apr 26 2001 at 1:38 PM Rating: Decent
    - They only spawn at night (started spawning around 8 at earliest but mostly after 12)
    - First night had 6 spawn but only got to 4 of them and 3 hearts were dropped. Came back for the forth heart at another time. 1 dropped out of 2
    - I was in Wolf Form so Brownies wont agro (well they wont agro you if you are KoS but I am not yet to them)
    - I was also Killing the roaming Undead
    - The Ghasts spawn all over so I just kept running in an X patern across the zone (Making sure to stay away from the DEs and those stupid lil gnomes buy the SF zone, have no idea why I was KoS to them)

The rancorous Ghasts will spawn more frequently if you keep the roaming undead cleaned out. If you are trying to avoid the notice of the Brownie scouts however, this could be a devastating tatic. I would check into Lesser Faydark every 3 hours or so during low usage times and find them. When the server is heavily populated, find a central location, like pos 500, pos 1000, which is the center of the zone, and wait for one to spawn, someone is always killing the undead off. Of course, being a level 22 Druid with maxed out tracking ability helps. A couple of things I can tell you for sure. First, it is about a 50 percent rate that one will drop a heart, and the second thing is that they alway spawn in pairs. If you find one, the second one is there somewhere, unless it got taken by another hunter.

Following the link to the discription of the Ghast hearts....The rarity shows common.

Common? I've killed 12 Ghasts in LFay and not one of them have dropped a heart! My opinion is this...The ghasts are uncommon - spawning only at night, and only after you take out the undead PH for them. Seems that about two ghast spawn each night. Also, they can spawn anywhere in LFay, so you would need a high level ranger to track the entire zone.

The heart looks to be an uncommon no drop from the ghasts. Doesn't this make the hearts rare?

Besides, for an initiate quest, going into LFay as a low level cleric/druid is a quick way to leave a corpse trail (can anyone say brownie?!?)

I've had to loot my corpse too many times to count on this quest and I have yet to see a heart. I've gotten so frustrated that I have almost given up this quest.

The only reason to do this quest is because the Disciple of Tunare symbol has some real cool stats and I could use that in later levels.

Dunno if this'll help any, but I was running through LFay to MM, along the trail that is slightly south & a good bit west of the Gfay zone. There were a number of corpses lined up, shortly found out a brownie scout was runnin' around. Only took about 5-6 hits to kill my 22 Monk. :CP To get to the point, on the CR I saw two ghasts in a row on that path. Might be a good spot for 'em if you can avoid the scouts.

After reading some of these other posts, I don't feel so bad. My 35 Druid has been trying to find Ghast hearts for a total of 8 hours playing time, haven't found one and have died twice...As mentioned before for an INITIATE quest, this is a little ridiculous...Watch out for an NPC near the Necro camp, they did 501 DD resulting in one of my deaths. Anyone have any tips on where the Ghasts camp/spawn...anything?

I have been camping the gahst on E'ci for the lasst four days. Best pop time I can get is 2 a hr. I am a 34 Druid with maxed track. I kill every skel and mum that comes up. After over 20 kills I have seen only two hearts. Wolf form helps with the browines.

As for the nec and courrier I was told this. Bind at the GF zone. Once you kill the nec gate and the Cour. will be there. I got the nec. before I found this out and have yet to try this.

For the levels this seems to be a overly time consuming quest. Of course there are the trips to SolA, Paw and MM needed to get the componants for the next part.

    Have fun??

After my second death, I submitted this to the everquest boards. For those of you who wish to do this quest, mark well that wandering brownies will make SHORT work of you if they find you. Wolf form will make you indifferent to them, but be careful!

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Well, first off a woohoo that the priestly quests have been initiated for Tunare! **cheers**

However... it seems very strange and unbalanced to me that a level 25 cleric cannot complete this quest without dying... twice. And I only have three hearts so far.

And this with the fact that I have been using my 29th level druid to track and kill the ghasts in wolf form( so he doesn't get killed by the roaming brownies ) I simply log in my cleric to loot the hearts if they are found.

I'd initially *tried* to hunt the ghasts on my own, using sense undead. Which I can't say I enjoyed. But after the first death to a brownie scout who proceeded to pummel me for 93 points of damage and then rooted me in place... (all this when I was simply killing a skeleton, not even for a ghast) Let's just say I didn't want to *LOSE* 25th level for an initiate quest. As it is, between the two deaths I've lost a bubble of experience. FOR AN INITIATE LEVEL QUEST.

I've seen and done the dark elf Hate initiate quest. Let me tell you, a 25th level cleric would have NO difficulty completing it. Maybe a wee bit of boredom, but nothing like this.

I'm posting this because you really may wish to replan this quest.
