After finishing the first three quests, ask Loremaster Borannin 'What is brewing?'

Loremaster Borannin says 'Ahh yes, good to see you again Maeve . I wish it were under better circumstances that we meet today. For some time now we have sent teams of our finest rogues to gather intelligence for the Dain. Tanik Greskil is one of our best. He was recently sent into the heart of Kael Drakkel on a very important mission and has not returned. He is now long overdue, and fearing the worst, our wise council has asked me to dispatch a rescue party to determine what has become of him and return him to safety. I have decided to give you this opportunity to build upon the trust you have earned from the council. Will you accept this mission?'

You say, 'I will accept this mission'

Loremaster Borannin says 'The council will be pleased to hear of your acceptance. Scour the regions surrounding the city of the Giants. Discover what happened to Tanik and, if possible, return him to Thurgadin. If you are successful, remember to hand me your woven shawl. We seem to be running low on them, but I must say Mordin has never had so much help in the kitchen. Anyway, I will eagerly await word of your findings. Good luck, and may Brell protect you.'

If you wander around the Eastern Wastes near NEG 6644 POS 4337 you will eventually see a message "the snow crumbles away revealing an injured coldain." This reveals Tanik Greskil.

You say, 'Hail, Tanik Greskil'

Tanik Greskil says 'Outlander! Thank Brell you've found me! I am the last surviving member of my unit. Our mission was somehow compromised, the bloody Kromrif knew just where to find us... I can't imagine how they knew. I was barely able to escape with my life and wandered into a trap here. I am badly hurt and need your help.'

You say, 'I will help'

Tanik Greskil says 'Quickly, give me a vial of Veluim Vapors so I can return home, I am in desperate need of some attention from our clerics.'

You say, 'What are velium vapors?'

Tanik Greskil says 'Drat! Are you telling me you don't have one with you? Run back to Thurgadin at once and speak with Frundle, she can make you one. I will do what I can to stay alive. I may need to move about a bit to keep from being discovered. Hurry now outlander, you're my only hope.'

Once back in Thurgadin, find Frundle.

You say, 'Hail, Frundle Frenklar'

You say, 'What velium vapors?'

Frundle Frenklar says 'Ahh, you come seeking my family recipe? After all you've done for our people it's the least I can do. First you must fashion a velium vial, then combine the vial with two small pieces of velium in this jar. That's all there is to it. Please keep the recipe a secret.'

You say, 'What velium vial?'

Frundle Frenklar says 'I'm no potter mind you, but if I remember correctly it's a small brick of velium, three crystalline silks, and two glass shards. Then you'll have to finish up by firing it in a kiln with a high quality firing sheet.'

You receive a Velium Purifier.

Small Pieces of Velium and Small Blocks of Velium can be looted on Ry`Gorr Miners in Crystal Caverns or off spiders in Velketor's Labyrinth.

Crystalline Silk can be found on spiders in both zones.

1) Combine a small (7 lb) brick of velium, three unstacked crystalline silks and two glass shards in a pottery wheel. You will receive an Unfired Velium Vial.

2) Combine the Unfired Velium Vial and a HQ firing sheet in the kiln and receive a Velium Vial.

3) Combine the Velium Vial and two unstacked small pieces of Velium in the Velium purifier. The Velium Purifier disappears and you are left with a Vial of Velium Vapors. The vial is a lore item and has one charge of gate to Thurgadin.

The vial is trivial at skill 122.

Do not camp the spot where Tanik Greskil is, because I did it, and got a message: You have been ambushed by frost giants! And two Kromrif Death Squad will spawn, and try to kill you.

When you get Tanik Greskil to spawn again, just hand him the vial.

Tanik Greskil says 'Thank you. I shall be eternally grateful to you. Should you ever require my assistance I pledge to you my aid. Please deliver this to Borannin, it is imperative that he deliver this to the Dain at once. Farewell for now outlander...'

You gain experience!!

Then head back to Thurgadin and hand Boradinn the note and your old shawl, for the new shawl.

Loremaster Borannin says 'Words cannot express our gratitude for your deeds outlander, you have saved a hero of our people from certain death. Please accept this, the Fur-lined shawl, as a token of our sincere appreciation. You are indeed among the most highly regarded Humans to set foot in Thurgadin. The next time we meet be sure to ask me how to further advance your reputation with the coldain.'

Also, every time I found a trigger, it was in front of the ramp, before going down it at the top of the hill. All the triggers I found would fit in a half circle that extends about 50 yards out from the start of the ramp.

Ok, I used the 'drop item' method last night and found Tanik in about an hour. I triggered the deathsquad 3 times, then Tanik. You can outrun the Deathsquad with jboots and zone to kael just fine. Also, one interesting sidenote.. When I found the tanik trigger, I also noticed a DS trigger right beside it, so both triggers CAN exist at the same time.

Man that pet idea is awsome!! I sat on the left ledge looking at kael and told my snow bunney to guard here. The snow bunny turned to his left and looked out straight ahead into the feild. I walked a short distance out then moved over a bit and started back. About halfway back to my bunny *poof* theres tanik...quick "hail" and giving of the vapors and this quest was over....never even saw the DS. maybe I was lucky or that pet trick is just too awsome.

Thanks to whoever found that out.

Frundle can be found in one of the small shops on the left before the historians' hall. It's the middle one.

Pottery. You need to work on pottery skill.
Go to EQTraders.com to learn the fastest way to increase pottery skill, or any trade skill for that matter.

I'm going to do up to this point in the shawl quests. Being a Warrior just being able to gate over there whenever i need to is well worth it. Is it a group TP or just single person?

1 - I do not believe you have to do all the shawls up to this one to create the gate potion. I have a paladin friend that constantly makes this potion to save his ***/save time getting to Thurg, and he hasn't done all the quest yet.

2 - It's a single person teleport.

On the Rathe Server Tanik seems to pop near the Bridge to Iceclad! Also, he seems broken; I gave him the vial and got nothing at all. If you hail him he does not respond to "I will help" and in about 5 seconds the death squad pops ON TOP OF YOU. Not fun.

Can one of you post an actual location of where this trap is? I have been working on this guy of hours. When you say on the ramp, does that mean prior to the two giant guards, or do you mean through the valley and very close to the KD zone itself? Any further clarification of the /loc would be greatly appriciated.

First off, /kneel in humility and reverence in front of the person who originated the pet trick. This method saves lotsa time and removes this part of the shawl quest from being a pain. Much better even if yiu have a druid with you doing the trade/drop thing at the same time, but usually the ds will worry about your pet first, giving enough of a head start to make the zone line to kael safely.
Its really a breeze compared to find 4 snow griffin eggs (part 3) as a lonely necro without one of your fella druids or rangers on :P
Got tanik on the 3rd try (2 times DS and then woot), getting me the 4th shawl, working one the 5th now. There gonna be some real bottle necks in this quest series to come, only thinking about damn green gard *** siren mobs in CS for the rare dropping hairs or getting the royal blood off kael giants later, but as i may say, its all worth it (just look at the stats of the 7th shawl :))
To all people who posted that this quest sucks and is to hard. Think it over again and be honest to yourselves. This quest series rocks cause of some reasons. The main reason is, it is a challenge, and why dont ya like challenges in this game, which has gone very far.
This is a nice relief from camping some rare spawn, only o see him pop, getting killed by you, and not having this one rare drop you lookin for, or even from being the 5th wheel on the cart on larger scaled raids (planes or anywhere), which IMHO counts a bit for every class there is (maybe except chanters and pullers) and isnt so much fun at all.
Here in this quest you can go for a bit solo, then gather some friends, have a good time together (even when camping greens) and gather the stuff to attempt you tradeskill-roll. And if it fails, well thats a pain, but you can set the quest aside a bit for a while, get off the frustration and start all over when youre in the mood. Nobody tells you that you have to do it in a record time ;)
Doing tradeskills is just fun for the heck of it and if you get a very nice reward its even more fun.
This quest are likely the best VI has done in the last time concerning EQ, whith alot of missed stuff in other areas of the game. HEHE i stop here to not make this post a nuisance to read. LOL

Greetings to all my buddies on Inny and all fella necros. You guys rock, never forget it.

Tanik and the pet thing

Ok druids this pet trick works all right, just go get a walrus near Kael entrance and use the Guard here command to know in wich direction the trap is. I had Tanik spawning after 3 tries.
Re: Methods for Saving Tanik
# Jun 16 2001 at 11:06 AM Rating: Excellent
Ok I got my 4th shawl, and here is a summary of how I got Tanik to spawn 2 times.

The Death Squad and Tanik spawns are not really spawns at all, they are traps...traps that need to be triggered.

The first time I triggered Tanik to get my shawl, I was solo (54 Druid). I used the "item drop method" which was to go to options and change the Fast Drop to confirm. Then I picked a spot, (facing Kael, I picked the left side of the ramp right on the corner.) and began trying to drop my foraged food. When you try to drop it, it gives the confirm box, do not close the confirm box, leave it open and continue clicking around the area you want to check for a trigger, I stood facing to the right (if you were coming from Kael Drakkal) and began clicking and moving my cursor up and down the screen while i slowly turned (to make me face away from Kael). Every now and then, I would see the message text "You are too far away from You have to trade" Notice that when you trigger the death spawn, it says "You have been ambushed by Frost Giants" Well simply put (because no one here really explained) The trade message you receive is part of the social text that you get when you trigger the spawn, meaning the "You are too far away from [You have] to trade. This shows that You have is the trigger, and it is actually targetable, a few times while clicking to find the trap which I knew was the Death Squad due to the [You have] reference in the trade message, I ended up in a trade screen with [You have] (note if you complete the trade, you trigger the trap, and lose your foraged food). It took me triggering the Death Squad and running to Kael zone 9 times, and then finally I got a message that said "You are too far away from You stumble to trade" The You stumble is Tanik, when you trigger his trap, it says "You stumble over a Coldain covered in snow" (or something like that, but the You stumble part is the first two words and the name of the trap when targeted).

I did attempt making /Target You have and /Target You stumble, but those proved to be fruitless, even though I know for a fact that "You Have" can be targeted.

Total time triggering 2.5 hours, 9 Death Squad triggers, and 1 Tanik trigger

That was the first shawl, then I assisted a necromancer friend of mine get Tanik to spawn again, and this time...it was so much faster. We had him cast a level 1 pet (no sense in wasing mana since the DS will maul through him anyway) we parked the pet right in the middle of the ramp to Kael. I invised up, and he Feigned Death far back on the side of the ramp. I stood next to the pet and watched the way he turned when my necro friend FD'd. I would face the same way the pet was standing in front of the pet in the direction he is facing and begin my drop clicking. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS METHOD. It was much faster as I had a pretty good idea of where the trigger spot was as opposed to just clicking in every direction a million times. After either 8 or 9 Death Squad spawns, finally the Tanik "You Stumble" message appeared and we got his note. This method took about 1.5 hours at most, as you can see this is a big time saver over just doing it solo randomly.

Notes:

Seems that Tanik's trigger is 1 out of 10 Death Squad since both times it was 8 or 9 DS before Tanik.

Tanik Spawned on (facing Kael) the left side of the ramp the first time, and on the right side the second, so it seems his trigger spots are random.

Keep SoW or Wolf form if you have it up, your going to need it, and head into Kael zone, I noticed that they DS seemed to despawn faster if you zone right away than kite them around or to the Coldain guards.

Have pacience....when I was doing it alone, I nearly lost my mind working those 2 and a half hours just clicking a piece of fruit on my computer screen, but count the DS spawns, and you will know your that much closer to Tanik's note and your 4th shawl

This is AWESOME!!!! Thank you SO much for posting this....I would've gone nuts trying to find this. Instead I cast a pet, /pet guard here, and clicked til I got something. First time I got DS...ran like hell to the Kael zone. Second time I got Tanik gave him his potion gated back to Thurg and got my 4th shawl!!! I love it! of course now to get my tailoring high enough for 5th :P

Finaly found Tanik last night. I just wanted to confirm that the pet trick is the best way to complete this. It seems the clever coders at verant randomized the trigger so it will change each time its fired. I had spawns on both sides and in front of the kael ramp. But as others have posted after about 8-10 death squads the little lost coldain appeared.

Ok I have seen many things on these posts regarding which Crystal Silks to use for the quest....so i tried it. I went to Crystal Caverns and dropped down to the tunnel leading to the city (a good place to camp orcs BTW) I killed 5 orcs and had my Vellium pieces (3) and the Blocks of Vellium. Next I headed down to the area where the spiders spawn and pulled spiders to the entrance to the Geonid Hallway leading to the exit of the zone (another good place to camp spiders and Terrors BTW) I got 3 Crystal Silks (do not use the Crystal Webs, they are unstackable so you can tell the difference) Gated back to Thuragin and sat at the pottery wheel. I followed the quest guidlines and created the unfired vial of velium, then proceeded to the kiln which produced the Vial of Vellium. I headed to the gal who gives the purifier and followed the quest guidelines and combined the vial in the purifier to make the Velium Vapors. A friend and I both did this at the same time...so I KNOW FOR FACT that the Silks from Crystal Caverns work. For those who dont believe.....go ahead...step in Velk's Lab and spend hour after hour killing those HARD spiders....in the meantime ill have all my chars with shawls because Crystal Caverns is uncamped 8)

Good Luck!

RE: the threads
# Jun 14 2001 at 11:34 PM Rating: Decent
NO. For THIS, the 4th prayer shawl, you use crystalline silk from CC, NOT the threads from Velk. The threads from Velk are for the *5th* shawl quest. I say this from experience, as I have already created successfully the vial and have never been anywhere near Velk. I am told however that normal crystalline silks DO also drop from spiders in Velk, but do not confuse these with threads.

These threads drop in Velketor's Labyrinth off the spiders. Pretty rare. Don't confuse them with the stuff that drops off the spiders in CC or the Mines.
How to hit the trigger for Tanik every time...
# Jun 05 2001 at 7:49 AM Rating: Good
I found Tanik last night after a good amount of work and time, but my very good friend and I found a method that worked on triggering the trap every single time without much delay.... (other than needing to run and zone to Kael and run back out)

This requires some guts, a pet class (or as in my case, being able to charm a pet), and most definitely sow and the ability to run to Kael quickly. Assistance from another is highly recommended, preferably a healer though a monk works very well too...

This is similar to the method of taking a pet and using /pet guard here (which does work, but takes time).

Assuming you are the one using the pet, create a pet and start at the top of the Kael ramp. Do /pet guard here. The pet will face the closest threat, either a mob or in this case, the nearest trigger/trap. Face the pet and begin backing up the way it was facing, and use /pet guard me (or /pet follow me) to make it follow you a short distance, then issue the /pet guard here command again. See which way it is facing. Change your direction again, if needed, to back up in the direction the pet is facing. I would go about 5 steps or so at a time then give the /pet guard here command. If you keep doing this, eventually you will hit the trigger. You may have to go some distance out, or you may hit the trigger fairly quickly. I found some triggers quite a distance out to the left or the right of the ramp.

You are most likely to make the Death Squad spawn right on top of you, yes. RUN (not walk) to Kael zone. Don't forget to shout Death Squad to Kael along the way to warn of the possible train. Your pet will do the sacrificial thing and fight to protect you, hopefully giving you a little head start to run away. To be safe, you probably want to zone to lose the aggro, even though you might be able to get away fast enough to lose the aggro, there's usually someone in the area that will find your Death Squad and train them to Kael after you. You may not want to zone out of Kael until you're sure the Death Squad is gone. Sometimes I could make it halfway to Kael and not have them follow me, and they would despawn, but seeing as the Death Squad moves fast and has a big aggro radius (and someone typically finds them and trains them), I quickly learned it was better to zone (died once because of this). And BTW, do not stop to see if they are following you. Get most of the way to Kael before you decide to stop and check, if you do at all.

This is where having a friend to help scout for you comes in handy (or if your friend is the one with the pet, you do the scouting). Have your friend keep a decent distance away from you and the pet while you are doing this and keep you informed when you hit the trigger, whether the giants are following you, and when they have despawned. (My friend would tell me "run!" as soon as I hit the trigger, and I found myself with just enough time to get a head start on the Death Squad in most cases). My friend was a 60 level monk and would also try and aggro the Death Squad off me and then FD.

It took a good number of tries, but just when I was about to give up for the night, I got Tanik at last! Woot!

This method can definitely be improved, but it worked for me. BTW, I'm not a true pet class, I'm an enchanter. My pets were charmed mobs from the area (I liked the snow bunny pet the best, but the poor thing would quickly get squished by the giants, sigh. The manticore made a good pet too, lasted a good while with the Death Squad). We were able to trigger the trap every time without fail. It took about 15 times, sigh, to finally get Tanik. But, most of the time was just spent in running to Kael and zoning, and running back.

Maybe it was my level (56 enchanter) and my low aggro radius, or perhaps the Death Squad takes a second or two to aggro once they spawn, but typically I was able to run away as soon as they spawned, without aggro or with letting the pet aggro and being able to outrun the aggro range. /shrug. I was also self-buffed up pretty good, including Rune V, which helped absorb alot of the blows from the Death Squad if they did aggro on me.

Good luck,

I did the try to trade thing today. I found the trigger 3 of 4 times with it. Facing kael 3 of th4 were left of the ramp. Got Gians 3 times and then finally Tanik. other trap was near the top of the ramp. Finally this was my 8th trip. The triggers reset automatically . took about 45 mintutes to find and trip all 4 triggers.
Finding Tanik and Gate potion
# Jun 02 2001 at 8:05 AM Rating: Default
I, too, found Tanik at the bottom of the ramp on the right side.

What I've found interesting in reading all these posts is that no one has commented on the gate potion. did you know it works??? I keep velium bricks, pieces and crys silks in the bank and use my gate potion quite often. After I use it, I just make another and keep it in my inventory for later use. I found this to be a nice item to have if you are not a porting class. When gating, it places you on the bridge in the entrance to Thurgadin.

Good luck to all!

Spawning Tanik:

I used the method where you attempt to drop an item on the ground. It still took a long time, but after a while, I had mapped out 4 precise spawn points on the south side of the entrance.

I was also able to ONLY trigger Tanik. The messages are:

"You are too far away from You have to trade."
"You are too far away from You stumble to trade."

The 'You have' and 'You stumble' parts of the message are for Deatsquad and Tanik respectively...so only step on the area where the 'You stumble' message appears and you'll only spawn Tanik.

Good luck!
