After finishing the first three quests, ask Loremaster Borannin 'What is brewing?'

Loremaster Borannin says 'Ahh yes, good to see you again Maeve . I wish it were under better circumstances that we meet today. For some time now we have sent teams of our finest rogues to gather intelligence for the Dain. Tanik Greskil is one of our best. He was recently sent into the heart of Kael Drakkel on a very important mission and has not returned. He is now long overdue, and fearing the worst, our wise council has asked me to dispatch a rescue party to determine what has become of him and return him to safety. I have decided to give you this opportunity to build upon the trust you have earned from the council. Will you accept this mission?'

You say, 'I will accept this mission'

Loremaster Borannin says 'The council will be pleased to hear of your acceptance. Scour the regions surrounding the city of the Giants. Discover what happened to Tanik and, if possible, return him to Thurgadin. If you are successful, remember to hand me your woven shawl. We seem to be running low on them, but I must say Mordin has never had so much help in the kitchen. Anyway, I will eagerly await word of your findings. Good luck, and may Brell protect you.'

If you wander around the Eastern Wastes near NEG 6644 POS 4337 you will eventually see a message "the snow crumbles away revealing an injured coldain." This reveals Tanik Greskil.

You say, 'Hail, Tanik Greskil'

Tanik Greskil says 'Outlander! Thank Brell you've found me! I am the last surviving member of my unit. Our mission was somehow compromised, the bloody Kromrif knew just where to find us... I can't imagine how they knew. I was barely able to escape with my life and wandered into a trap here. I am badly hurt and need your help.'

You say, 'I will help'

Tanik Greskil says 'Quickly, give me a vial of Veluim Vapors so I can return home, I am in desperate need of some attention from our clerics.'

You say, 'What are velium vapors?'

Tanik Greskil says 'Drat! Are you telling me you don't have one with you? Run back to Thurgadin at once and speak with Frundle, she can make you one. I will do what I can to stay alive. I may need to move about a bit to keep from being discovered. Hurry now outlander, you're my only hope.'

Once back in Thurgadin, find Frundle.

You say, 'Hail, Frundle Frenklar'

You say, 'What velium vapors?'

Frundle Frenklar says 'Ahh, you come seeking my family recipe? After all you've done for our people it's the least I can do. First you must fashion a velium vial, then combine the vial with two small pieces of velium in this jar. That's all there is to it. Please keep the recipe a secret.'

You say, 'What velium vial?'

Frundle Frenklar says 'I'm no potter mind you, but if I remember correctly it's a small brick of velium, three crystalline silks, and two glass shards. Then you'll have to finish up by firing it in a kiln with a high quality firing sheet.'

You receive a Velium Purifier.

Small Pieces of Velium and Small Blocks of Velium can be looted on Ry`Gorr Miners in Crystal Caverns or off spiders in Velketor's Labyrinth.

Crystalline Silk can be found on spiders in both zones.

1) Combine a small (7 lb) brick of velium, three unstacked crystalline silks and two glass shards in a pottery wheel. You will receive an Unfired Velium Vial.

2) Combine the Unfired Velium Vial and a HQ firing sheet in the kiln and receive a Velium Vial.

3) Combine the Velium Vial and two unstacked small pieces of Velium in the Velium purifier. The Velium Purifier disappears and you are left with a Vial of Velium Vapors. The vial is a lore item and has one charge of gate to Thurgadin.

The vial is trivial at skill 122.

Do not camp the spot where Tanik Greskil is, because I did it, and got a message: You have been ambushed by frost giants! And two Kromrif Death Squad will spawn, and try to kill you.

When you get Tanik Greskil to spawn again, just hand him the vial.

Tanik Greskil says 'Thank you. I shall be eternally grateful to you. Should you ever require my assistance I pledge to you my aid. Please deliver this to Borannin, it is imperative that he deliver this to the Dain at once. Farewell for now outlander...'

You gain experience!!

Then head back to Thurgadin and hand Boradinn the note and your old shawl, for the new shawl.

Loremaster Borannin says 'Words cannot express our gratitude for your deeds outlander, you have saved a hero of our people from certain death. Please accept this, the Fur-lined shawl, as a token of our sincere appreciation. You are indeed among the most highly regarded Humans to set foot in Thurgadin. The next time we meet be sure to ask me how to further advance your reputation with the coldain.'

The 5th Part...

Ok, after completing this 4th quest I said the following, "/say how can i further advance my reputation". he stated that i should continue hunting for a while since i was not of high enough level (i'm level 40). Anyone have an idea what level one must be?

Hard to say since the rest of the quest apparently hasn't been installed yet. Considering that the quest was starting to look like a test of trade skills that somehow got derailed, no telling what will happen next.

that is not part of the 5th shawl quest but related to a different quest - he always has been saying that at random intervals. I will try the quest phrase later tonight to see if theres really a fifth leg of the quest in...

I bet these are the coldain down in the crystal caverns - that would explain why they are unfiendly and on different faction - although wouldnt explain why they wouldnt be hostile if you have good thurgadin faction.

Ah well - just an idea.

The dain from CC seem to be the original dain from the quest i have seen. They dont know of the existence of Thurgian. After a war the battles survivors fled and made the new city of Thurg. The Dain in CC think all were killed. Different faction i guess cause one city doesnt know about the other from what i can tell.

the vial is lore no drop, but the effect works on pc, you gate on the bridge at entrance of thurgadin.
I HAVE THE INFO ON TANIK AND DEATH SQUAD!!!!
# Apr 01 2001 at 8:23 PM Rating: Decent
Ok I have been doing this for 4 hours now it seems Tanik spawns alternately between left and right side of ramp ( not sure about on ramp) the death spawn will spawn just after Tanik depops on the opposite side of which Tanik popped ie> If tanik spawns on the left side of ramp then death squad will spawn on the right IF TRIGGERED! The death squad also pop in the exact location of where Tanik does. Which means if Tanik pops on the left then the death squad pop on the right in the exact location that Tanik pops on when he pops on the right. and vice versa. I know it sounds confusing but hope it helps
Do you need any brewing skill for this quest?
# Apr 01 2001 at 3:29 PM Rating: Decent
I know the part where you actually combine the velium and the vial uses the brewing skill. I think my brewing is still 1. Should I get it up to make sure I finish this quest, or does this step never fail?
RE: Do you need any brewing skill for this quest?
# Apr 17 2001 at 5:22 AM Rating: Decent
I do not get a trivial message when combining the vials at a 168 brewing skill. I think it is an automatic thing.
Quickest way to master Pottery?

What is the quickest way to master Pottery?
RE: Quickest way to master Pottery?
# Apr 01 2001 at 3:15 PM Rating: Excellent
Pottery is an exceptionally easy skill to raise (at least compared to my old blacksmithing days, which were torture).

First train a few points at your trainers.
Then go anywhere that has pottery supplies and wheel. (North Freeport, Thurgadin and Halas are all good).
Start with medium jars. Make them in the wheel until they become trivial (at 36). Do NOT finish anything in the kiln. It's a waste of money and unneccessary if you are just raising skill.
Now make small bowls (bowl sketch, small block of clay, and water flask), also in the wheel - that gets you to 102.
Now move on to medium jars until 122.

There are other things to get you a bit higher, but the velium vial itself is trivial at 122, so you should be ok at 122 for the quest, you may get a few failures, but that can always happen.
Good luck.
Am I the only one dying :(
# Mar 27 2001 at 3:07 PM Rating: Default
GRRRRRR! The only trigger i seem to hit is the one for the Death Squad. I drop Invis and Lev and walk up and down the ramp and to the left and right near the top. I can oly get the death squad to pop.

Am I doing something wrong or just getting bad rolls. Do you suppose the trigger spot is a random as to whether is Tanik or death squad? Any advice would be apprectiated as dying in hell level sucks :( Well and in all the other levels also :P I did easily outrun them with SoW one time.. even stopping and turning around to see them. But other times the gained and caught me with SoW. Lag seemed to be the same.

I also noticed that after I zoned back in despite them being far away they came running back for me. I was at Kael zone line and they were about half way to the front gate/ramp area.

ok. here we go. first a complete step by step.

first, talk to loremaster borannin in the thurgadin library. say "what brewing?" (continued from the 3rd shawl).

You say, "What is brewing?"

Loremaster Borannin says, "Ahh yes good to see you again Clairan. I wish it were under better circumstances that we meet today. For some time now we have sent teams of our finest rogues to gather intelligence for the Dain. Tanik Greskil on one of our best. He was recently sent into the heart of Kael Drakkel on a very important mission and had not returned. He is now long overdue, and fearing the worst, our wise council has asked me to dispatch a rescue party to determine what has become of him and return him to safety. I have decided to give you this opportunity to build upon the trust you have earned from the council. Will you accept this mission?"

You say "I will accept this mission."

Loremaster Borannin says "The council will be pleased to hear of your acceptance, Clairan. Scour the region surrounding the city of the Giants. Discover what happened to Tanik and, if possible, return him to Thurgadin. If you are successful, remember to hand me your woven shawl. We seem to be running low on them, but I must say Mordin has never had so much help in the kitchen. Anyway, I will eagerly await word of your findings. Good luck, and may Brell protect you."

now head to eastern wastes and the kael ramp. Tanik is a triggered spawn. the way to trigger him is to run up and down the kael ramp. (worked best for me when i ran zig zag). he spawns down towards the bottom of the ramp and is laying on the ground.

You say, "hail Tanik Greskil"
Tanik Greskil says "Outlander! Thank Brell you've found me! I am the last surviving member of my unit. Our mission was somehow compromised, the bloody Kromrif knew just where to find us... I can't imagine how they knew. I was barely able to escape with my life and wandered into a trap here. I am badly hurt and need your help."

You say, "i will help"
Tanik Greskil says "Quickly, give me a vial of Veluim Vapors so I can return home, I am in desperate need of some attention from our clerics."

You say, "what velium vapors"
Tanik Greskil says "Drat! Are you telling me you don't have one with you? Run back to Thurgadin at once and speak with Frundle, she can make you one. I will do what I can to stay alive. I may need to move about a bit to keep from being discovered. Hurry now outlander, you're my only hope."

so now you have to run back to thurgadin. Frundle can be found in one of the three buildings across from the paladin guild (near the library).

You say, "what velium vapors?"
Frundle Frenkler says "Ahh, you come seeking my family recipe? After all you've done for our people it's the least I can do. First you must fashion a velium vial, then combine the vial with two small pieces of velium in this jar. That's all there is to it. Please keep the recipe a secret."

You say, "what velium vial?"
Frundle Frenkler says "I'm no potter mind you, but if I remember correctly it's a small brick of velium, three crystalline silks, and two glass shards. Then you'll have to finish up by firing it in a kiln with a high quality firing sheet."

she will give you a 4 slot purifier. it is a container, so you will need an open inventory slot.

now you need to collect your ingedients. go to CC. everything you need is there. hunt the miners up top for the small pieces and small bricks of velium. then drop (make sure you have lev!) down to the bottom, run through the dorf town, and into the hall with the velium crawlers, spiderlings, and webmasters. the spiderlings die in one nuke (688). the crawlers die in one nuke and one ES dot (688+300=around 1k HP). webmasters are tougher and i avoided them. in about an hour, i had a stack of these and gated out.

head back to thurgadin. go in the bank. the vendor on the very left sells crystal shards and HQ firing sheets. buy 2 crystal shards and 1 HQ firing sheet.

go click on the pottery wheel in the bank. put the items in like this:

crystalline silk
crystalline silk
crystalline silk
glass shard
glass shard
small brick of velium

do not stack the silks. also, even though all other pottery i've done always requires a water flask, do not use one. i tried and it didn't combine. so NO WATER FLASK! i'm around 100 in pottery and it was not trivial.

you will get an unfired velious vial.

right next to the pottery wheel is the kiln. combine the vial you just made with a high quality firing sheet. this will produce a velious vial. it was trivial at 100.

now, open that purifier box that you got and put in the vial, and 2 small pieces of velium. make sure they are not stacked.

small piece of velium
small piece of velium
velious vial

hit combine and you will have a vial of velium vapors. this looks like it can be used by characters as well. it has one charge of "thurgadin gate" and apparently will gate you to thurgadin, although i didnt try.

now run back to eastern wastes and find tanik again. give him the vial of velium vapors and he will thank you and then poof, leaving you a note to deliver to loremaster borannin. go back to thurgadin and turn your woven shawl along with the note to loremaster borannin and you will get faction and your shawl will be updated.

<img src=http://clairan.50megs.com/shawl.jpg>

:) good luck

P.S. WORDS OF WARNING! when trying to make tanik pop, there is a chance that instead of tanik, you will trigger the kromriff death squad. this is a group of very nasty giants that have high MR (even after my group debuffed him, i couldn't land a snare). they also run at nearly sow speed. if anyone has ever fought warden bruke in EW, it's like having a handful of him all spawning on you at once, except they have more HP and see through invis. our group (ranging from mid 40s to 50s) had trouble killing one. we finally succeeded and got a nice large class only woven vest (18 ac, 10 str and some other attributes). my friend had between 8-10 spawn on her at once. she got a message of "you have been giant ambushed" and they killed her in seconds. i took a screenshot of the dead one we killed if you need proof...but i don't lie. so be careful

also, the quest once again stop at this point. figures. now we wait another 2 months for them to add the 5th part. wow, by Christmas this shawl will be worth wearing!

Complete spoiler good guide/a shortcut here
# Apr 04 2001 at 1:32 AM Rating: Good
Clairan's spoiler is excellent. It is also written clearer than the main quest post.

The only thing I would add to it is that it is possible to take a shortcut to finish the quest:

1. Get your needed loot in Crystal Caverns, or other Velious dungeons.

2. Master pottery (Velium Vial trivial at 130).

3. Talk to Frundle and get the purifier.

4. Make the Thurgadin gate potion.

5. With potion in hand, go find Tanik, and just give it to him. I didn't have to find him twice, and I didn't have to talk to him.

Also, I made Tanik spawn by following Clairan's above advice: running zigzag near the bottom of the ramp to Kael. He spawned and was lying on the ground, like a corpse. His spawn point was fair enough away from Kael's gate guards that they didn't aggro. Luckily, I didn't see the death squad.

RE: complete spoiler

no it drops off of the orc miners and such in CC, as well as off the mobs in velks lab, skyshrine and icewell keep. i'm constantly checking the vendors in skyshrine for them and have picked a couple up that way. :)

I've found plenty of them on the cooks in Skyshrine. They don't seem to aggro when people pull the rest of the room, so people tend to leave them alone. Since the large, small and pieces of velium drop often in Skyshrine, these two cooks are the obvious vendors for people to sell to. I bought 13 small bricks at one sitting when experimenting with this quest trying to determine the trivial levels for the vial, at a cost of around 13 plat I think. (It's been a while, so I'm not sure on the cost)

Ok, I agree with a previous post. Turn off invis and levtate, go to near the kromrif guards at the bottom of the crevasse, and walk around just out of aggro range. I did and he popped within 30 seconds of looking.

This method gave me several spawns of the Kromrif Death Squad boys with no spawn of Tanik. It's possible that I was just unlucky, but prior to having the velium vapors to give to Tanik I'd found Tanik twice without ever seeing the death squad.

When I found Tanik before he was actually out in the icy plains above the ramp that leads down to the entry to Kael in an area where there are wandering giants, snow griffons and such. I'm pretty sure that I was camoflaged at the time, too.

and the story will go on...

I suggest making one of these bad boys after you are done w/ the quest. The gate potion does work well. I used it the other day after hunting in DL for awhile I needed to get back to thurgy. Works like a charm. the ingrediants are easy to get and to have one of these bad boys laying around does make it nice to get back to a safe place after hunting
A few answers to questions that I had...
# Mar 19 2001 at 2:48 PM Rating: Good
The vial (unsure on the unfired version, but I think so), and the final potion are nodrop.

When making the vial in the pottery wheel you don't need water.

I don't know of the spawn time on the dorf, but I would expect in the 20-30min range.

You can "spawn" Tanik while invis and while levitating.

When I popped the Death Squad there were four of them and they were all level 45. I was saved only by the grace of a wonderful shaman friend of mine that gave me a sow. Just keep a watch on your screen and don't stop to investigate the giants, just run.

I don't know if the DS is a place holder or not for Tanik, but I did see a necro there that had spent at least a couple hours there and hadn't been jumped by them (then again he wasn't looking for the dorf too hard either since he had to take him from me when I found him).

Tanik *WILL* despawn after ONE and only ONE person gives him the potion! I got my potion into the trade screen and was hitting trade when the aforementioned necro slipped in and gave it to him a fraction faster than I did. I was left with the potion back and having to find the dorf all over again.

I found him just south of the entrance to Kael. Up on top of the cliff just to the south of the "canyon" that leads into the entrance to Kael. It didn't seem to be a fixed position since I popped him in two different spots, but they were close to each other.

Easy step
# Mar 17 2001 at 5:40 PM Rating: Good
ok i started this quest around 10:00 pm last night. my pottery was at 23 i believe from having to make the pie tin from the earlier quest parts. I raised my pottery to around 130 in about an hour and 1/2 because i was running around the zone killing the spiders for their silk. when mana ran out i ran back to bank and made pottery. don't bother with firing your products, it's a waste of time, just delete em.

anyway i would sit and meditate while making pottery till my mana was full and start killing spiders again. once i hit 130 i knew it should be trivial so i went to the caverns, all the way to the queen area and killed about 10 spiders got around 13 silks, and killed my way back out. on the way i wound up with 2 bricks and about 3 pieces of the velium. luckily i already had a stack of 20 still in the bank. I went back made the vial, fired it, got the purifier combined it and everyone is telling you about the loc of tanik. here's the easy part. go to the top of the ramp like you are about to go to kael drakkel. you are almost on top of tanik at this point. he was like straight out and slightly to the right. gave him the potion and gated back. grabbed my shawl and still hit the sack at just after 12:30am. =) all in all pretty easy for a druid. now i'm gonna make one to see if it realy works as a gate potion. i know some very very happy warrior types who's sure like these.
RE: Easy step

The potion does work, however it's nodrop... Warrior-types are gonna have to make em for themselves and it's useless to a Druid.

I didn't see Tanik but I did see the Death Squad. All four of them. I wandered around for about 20 minutes then got ambushed. I tried to outrun them with JBoots but they ran as fast as I did, and then my harddrive went nuts, screen froze, and they caught up with me and killed me very quickly. I'd advise anyone trying to find Tanik to have a real sow on. All things considered I'd rather have to do some more baking.
Tanik
# Mar 17 2001 at 6:08 AM Rating: Excellent
Tanik spawns every 5min. Does not show up on track, you have to walk right on top of him for him to spawn, he is dead center in the middle of the crevace going down to the guard gate, you must be visible for the snow to crumble away and show him lying down on the ground, and he goes away very quick. As for the vial of felium vapors, you can make it again after the quest is done, which is a wonderful thing to be able to make if you are a tank
So does the quest go any further?

I was looking for Tanik today but didn't find him for awhile... I did, however, find the Deathsquad. I caused two of them to pop and i ran like nuts all around the zone trying to lose em. They're highly Magic resistant and they won't depop till they kill the person who triggered them. Figures that after about 5 mins of running like crazy, i got Tanik on track but someone else got to him first.

I have found Tanik in 3 different locations. I found him at the entrance to Kael(on the ramp), just to the left of the ramp, and just to the right/front of the ramp. There may be more spawns points for him, but I havent found any more than that yet. He spawns pretty quick b/c I did the quest about 6 times in a period of 30 mins. I just gated back and forth getting the velium purifier and making one after the other.

I've managed to spawn these fellows three times so far. Here's what I have learned about them.

1. They are very fast. I'm a 48 druid with SoW, but on a run that started on the ramp down to Kael and went all the way to the zone line on the bridge to Iceclad they were able to stay close enough to me that when I reached that zone and turned around they were only a few seconds behind me. Do not underestimate their speed. I strongly suspect they can outrun J-boots.

2. There is a short delay between the spawn message and their actual attack. If you start running as soon as you see the "you have been ambushed by frost giants" message in your chat window you will find that you can get a slight head start on them before they start swinging at you. If you are running with SoW when that message hits your chat window you might not even see the messages where they tell you how they are going to kill you. The only time I saw it was when they spawned while I was standing still.

3. I've had death squad spawns with as many as 4 and as few as 2 giants. I'm not sure what the upper and lower limits are, however.

4. If you can make it to the zone and wait a minute or two before zoning back they are gone and no longer visible on tracking. I suspect they might simply despawn when you zone unless there is somebody else nearby they can agro on. In that case they may kill that person before they despawn.

5. I have had them spawn twice on the ramp, and once very close to but just south of the ramp. I suspect they may spawn in an area on or near the ramp. I'm not sure how far out you need to be to avoid them. For now, however, I would tend to avoid that general area unless you need to be there for this quest or to actually enter Kael.

6. I've trained them once to the bridge to Iceclad and twice to the Kael zone (shouting repeatedly about the train all the way both times, of course). It is possible to make a large sweeping turn to change your direction of travel without them catching you if you have a really good SoW on while you run, but use your F9 views to see how far back they are before you try this so you don't run right back into them.

7. They absolutely do see through a druid's Superior Camoflage version of Invisibility. Do not count on that spell to prevent them from seeing you or spawning. It won't.

8. They con blue to me at 48.
Pottery is trivial to master

Takes less than an hour and 10pp to get from 0 to 122 in Thurgadin or Halas. And just going down the ramps in CC on our way to the crystal spiders allowed for the gathering of enough Velium for 3 attempts.

All the stages, from the unfired velium vial, to the Velium vial and the Vial of Velium Vapors are NO DROP. But only the final result is NO DROP and LORE. You can have as many velium vial stored as you want and the small pieces of Velium stacks.

What's non-trivial about the quest are the Kromriff Death Squads. Got them triggered *5* times while trying to get Tanik to show up last night. Tanik despawns pretty fast too.

Heh... Nice blues at 55 tough. If they don't 'adjust' the spawn rate, I may put a group together and go farm those big dummies for exp. They're not any harder than the Kromriff Guardsmen, really.

Kromrif guardsmen are about 20 times easier then the Deathsquads. DS's have about 95 percent MR, 54 necro and 52 druid would run around finding spawns, if more then 2, would take to zone, if 2, would do our darndest to split them, then take one to the dwarves near Rygorr fort and let them dispatch him. Then we would do our best to snare/dot/keel using anyway possible the last DS, was quite fun actualy, drop a giant woven vest, which I sold for 50p in bazaar. I've gotten Tanik to spawn once for someone else so far, jus tout form Kael ent, running into EW, take a right, run up the canyon, he was near the 2 trees. Use a pet to /guard here. If the pet faces the guardsmen, Tanik isnt up, if he faces away from guardsmen, go in that direction, have pet follow, then have pet guard after running a few feet. continue doing so until pet turns a different way, with 2 pets its so much easier to set one then the other and wander around in the area they both face. Hope this helps somone, enjoy.

A few questions for those who have finished this

#1. How long do you have to be in the area where Tanik is supposed to be before he or the hunting party shows up?

#2. Do the giants see through invisibility/camo?

#3. Has anyone bothered to ask Loremaster Borannin anything on the subject of reputation?

"The next time we meet be sure to ask me how to further advance your reputation with the coldain."

<note to self>
If you are heading to Kael, and you here a whole lot of giant foot steps running behind you, do not, repeat, do not turn around to take a snap shot or even to see what it is.

Luckily, I had been buffed to 1500 hp for a run to Cobalt Scar to fight, and had SoW up. They not only saw through my invis, but kept up with my SoW potion. They were hitting for 135 plus and I zoned to Kael only one hit from death, ie, less than a 100 hp.

I did the quest twice. First time Tanik popped at the almost bottom of the ramp. I got his message that a coldain appears and there he was lying on the ground. Second time I got the message "YOU HAVE BEEN AMBUSHED BY FROST GIANTS" !! You DO have about 1-2 seconds to run. Keep running or they will catch you. DO NOT stop to look Trust me.. they are right behind you. Just zone and they will disappear. Then go back and do it again. Yes they see thru invis. 3. see above response

#1 - he spawns about every 30 minutes, maybe closer to the 23 minute cycle Verant likes to use.

#2 - the regular ones wandering around EW cannot see through invis. I didn't see the "death squad" spawn so I don't know if they do, and I don't know if you're invis if you'll be able to uncover Tanik.

#3 - Yes, he replied something to the effect of "we have nothing new, so keep advancing in power. One day that power will be called upon."
