After finishing the first three quests, ask Loremaster Borannin 'What is brewing?'

Loremaster Borannin says 'Ahh yes, good to see you again Maeve . I wish it were under better circumstances that we meet today. For some time now we have sent teams of our finest rogues to gather intelligence for the Dain. Tanik Greskil is one of our best. He was recently sent into the heart of Kael Drakkel on a very important mission and has not returned. He is now long overdue, and fearing the worst, our wise council has asked me to dispatch a rescue party to determine what has become of him and return him to safety. I have decided to give you this opportunity to build upon the trust you have earned from the council. Will you accept this mission?'

You say, 'I will accept this mission'

Loremaster Borannin says 'The council will be pleased to hear of your acceptance. Scour the regions surrounding the city of the Giants. Discover what happened to Tanik and, if possible, return him to Thurgadin. If you are successful, remember to hand me your woven shawl. We seem to be running low on them, but I must say Mordin has never had so much help in the kitchen. Anyway, I will eagerly await word of your findings. Good luck, and may Brell protect you.'

If you wander around the Eastern Wastes near NEG 6644 POS 4337 you will eventually see a message "the snow crumbles away revealing an injured coldain." This reveals Tanik Greskil.

You say, 'Hail, Tanik Greskil'

Tanik Greskil says 'Outlander! Thank Brell you've found me! I am the last surviving member of my unit. Our mission was somehow compromised, the bloody Kromrif knew just where to find us... I can't imagine how they knew. I was barely able to escape with my life and wandered into a trap here. I am badly hurt and need your help.'

You say, 'I will help'

Tanik Greskil says 'Quickly, give me a vial of Veluim Vapors so I can return home, I am in desperate need of some attention from our clerics.'

You say, 'What are velium vapors?'

Tanik Greskil says 'Drat! Are you telling me you don't have one with you? Run back to Thurgadin at once and speak with Frundle, she can make you one. I will do what I can to stay alive. I may need to move about a bit to keep from being discovered. Hurry now outlander, you're my only hope.'

Once back in Thurgadin, find Frundle.

You say, 'Hail, Frundle Frenklar'

You say, 'What velium vapors?'

Frundle Frenklar says 'Ahh, you come seeking my family recipe? After all you've done for our people it's the least I can do. First you must fashion a velium vial, then combine the vial with two small pieces of velium in this jar. That's all there is to it. Please keep the recipe a secret.'

You say, 'What velium vial?'

Frundle Frenklar says 'I'm no potter mind you, but if I remember correctly it's a small brick of velium, three crystalline silks, and two glass shards. Then you'll have to finish up by firing it in a kiln with a high quality firing sheet.'

You receive a Velium Purifier.

Small Pieces of Velium and Small Blocks of Velium can be looted on Ry`Gorr Miners in Crystal Caverns or off spiders in Velketor's Labyrinth.

Crystalline Silk can be found on spiders in both zones.

1) Combine a small (7 lb) brick of velium, three unstacked crystalline silks and two glass shards in a pottery wheel. You will receive an Unfired Velium Vial.

2) Combine the Unfired Velium Vial and a HQ firing sheet in the kiln and receive a Velium Vial.

3) Combine the Velium Vial and two unstacked small pieces of Velium in the Velium purifier. The Velium Purifier disappears and you are left with a Vial of Velium Vapors. The vial is a lore item and has one charge of gate to Thurgadin.

The vial is trivial at skill 122.

Do not camp the spot where Tanik Greskil is, because I did it, and got a message: You have been ambushed by frost giants! And two Kromrif Death Squad will spawn, and try to kill you.

When you get Tanik Greskil to spawn again, just hand him the vial.

Tanik Greskil says 'Thank you. I shall be eternally grateful to you. Should you ever require my assistance I pledge to you my aid. Please deliver this to Borannin, it is imperative that he deliver this to the Dain at once. Farewell for now outlander...'

You gain experience!!

Then head back to Thurgadin and hand Boradinn the note and your old shawl, for the new shawl.

Loremaster Borannin says 'Words cannot express our gratitude for your deeds outlander, you have saved a hero of our people from certain death. Please accept this, the Fur-lined shawl, as a token of our sincere appreciation. You are indeed among the most highly regarded Humans to set foot in Thurgadin. The next time we meet be sure to ask me how to further advance your reputation with the coldain.'

will this strategy work?
# Sep 25 2002 at 11:04 AM Rating: Decent
OK, I am a cleric, I have no charm soell, nor can I summon a pet. Therefore, unless I can find someone willing to aid me, I am forced to try to find Tanik on my own, well, with the help of my lovely Paladin wife, he he. (both of us 46)

So, I want to know, can I just wander back and forth along the ramp walls till I trigger, or are the spawn points out from the edge of the ramp? I figure since I can easily purchase sow potions, I can run the DS out, then gate back to ramp to turn in vial, (assuming I remember to bind myself).

will this work, or will I be forced to pay a druid for assistance?

Hey Kardazza

Im a paladin on quellious so i faced the same problem, 4 sow charges later i had made the DS squad pop a couple times, but it really sucks. Definitely worth spending the time to get help with this - i prefer shaman only because they don't fold so fast if a giant actually tags him. I have run several people through this encounter, and pet method works the best. Make sure the pet owner is telling his pet to guard the ground, not himself or it won't work correctly ;)

I have kept a close eye on these posts in the hopes that it would make things easier once it came time to go for it myself.

This is what I have learned from a couple hours of trying to do the quest. Don't worry about the Items to make the vial... buy em in the bazaar then go make it in Thurg...

The hard part is getting the dwarf to spawn... After a couple hours of testing I found that there are only 3 spots that he can spawn... the pet trick is a must... even with the pet i had some difficulty at first.
First, the locations. Tanik (?) spawns in one of three locations. North, South, or East of the Kael Ramp. He does not spawn in a set spot and does not have an adjacent DeathSquad trigger next to him. If you hang around you will just trigger the spot again and the Death Squad will chase you around. The spawns are random... just go for the same one and you will get Tanik to spawn... Yes, there are some instances when Tanik is not at any of the spawns... Tested and confirmec by myself and 2 others as we decided to trigger all of them, one oafter the other. Remeber... only 3 possible spawn points.
Second, the pet. I am a druid so i went and charmed a walrus... even gave him sow to keep up becasue i was impatient. take the pet to the Either of the 3 areas and tell him to guard here and he will point to the closest Mob to him... which is usually the trigger once you find where they are. Head in the direction that the pet is pointing and you will hit the trigger. If you run for a few steps and dont hit it, call the pet over and have it guard again... eventually you will find the trigger. If the Death Squad Spawns, don't fight them... just zone into Kael and they will go away once they are not aggro'ed. Go grab another pet and try the SAME spot again. You will get Tanik to spawn.

There is no need to talk to anyone in Thurgadin to initiate anything. Tanik is random and once a trigger is reset you start all over again... the only rule of thumb is that when Tanik has been triggered the next trigger will be Death Squad, so don't take too long to give him the vial.

I tested with one spot and C3 and was able to get Tanik to Spawn once for every 8 Death Squads. Since I didn't have to med the only down time was really zoning and getting another walrus for a victim.

Good luck all
Summary?

You all have bits and pieces of advice, but there's no 1 clear post on how to trigger this thing. Maybe nobody really knows how to do it reliably.

Several references to "the pet trick" (all only partially explained) seem to indicate that you can bring a pet with you and watch where it is looking to find the trap. However, someone disputes that. So, here are the questions of someone who has not attempted this yet.

1) If you are invis will it still trigger? I assume not, but then 1 DS will likely do me in. The advice to zone to Kael seems BAD to me, as they aren't terribly friendly to me considering all their bretheren that my druid killed.

2) Do you have to click to trigger the trap or walk on it? Or either one?

3) Wolf form is KOS in GD, so is it also a bad idea to try to trigger him in wolf form? Because that's the best chance I have of outrunning a bunch of giants who want to take XP from me.

Thanks to any who clear these things up.
RE: Summary?
# Sep 25 2002 at 3:38 PM Rating: Good
1) I believe that you will not be able to trigger Tanik if you are invised. The nice thing is that there really aren't a whole lot of nasties that hang out at the entrance to Kael. So you can invis from EW zone to Kael ramp then drop invis without too much concern.

2) You need to walk on the trap. But, don't walk too quickly over the trap as you won't trigger it if you just blast over it. The pet trick works really well for this as you can tell pet to guard, walk a couple of steps in front of it and tell your pet to follow you and guard again. In this amount of time if you were on the trigger spot Tanik would show up.

3) Some people have said that the KDS can outrun SoW. This is incorrect, I have been able to outrun them every single time with plenty of distance between them and me. The trick here is make sure you have a really fresh SoW. Also, on the other side of the zone in Kael there are no giants near by so you are pretty safe to sit and med/heal/get a soda.

Hope this helps you and some others in your journies.
RE: Summary?
# Jan 17 2003 at 9:03 AM Rating: Decent
cause for sow being outrun by DS are1 being encumbered, even if you are not visibly slower, you are always slower when encumbered. They forgot to switch back to run when they were walking to find the coldain or lag/pl that can really be a pain it has happened to me several times when my isp was suffering probs. :-(
But under normal circumstances it's not likely to be outrun by a ds. I have a habbit of camping the guards at kael and i regularly run over the traps. (don't know where they exactly are. :-) And even sowed and running can trigger a ds or the dwarf. Maybe it gets a bit less likely but it surely happens.

Anyway goodluck questing peeps.

When I hadn't learnt the pet trick yet, I ran around the area randomly. A lot. I do not know about Tanik, but at least Death Squad can be triggered with both Levitate and Camoflage on, and they also see through Camoflage. Could outrun them easily to Kael though, with SoW, no wolf form needed. (Kept Levitate on because the ramp to Kael can be nasty when in hurry.)

I used a snow bunny to point Tanik out for me and he was surprisingly far from the ramp, not in near vicinity. And indeed, when using pet trick, do baby steps.

# Aug 29 2002 at 1:45 PM Rating: Decent
OK all i type this as i near the end of a long work day on only 90 minutes of sleep. why only 90 minutes of sleep? Well after 2 KEI's (lost one when i zoned almost dead) and 15 Death Squads and 4 friends running around near the ramp, I finally spawned Tanik within 15 minutes of my SK friend (by the grace of Solusek Ro) showing up and offering to help. Here's how it worked for us:
Have a pet casting class do the pet trick (pet guard here so on and so forth. reference below), then have a tank class (or someone with more hp's than a wizzy)run around with 1 copper coin clicking in the general area the pet is pointing.
After 3 hours of DS's i did this with my SK frinds help and BAM 10-15 minutes we had another DS and Tanik! finally. and BTW the loc is random so i wont really give a loc cause may be different for you. GL and be safe. now on to a quick way to tailor....

"What do you mean I can't get aggro? I have diamonskin on." LOADING PLEASE WAIT...

Ok the bunny works very well. IF YOU USE THE /PET GUARD HERE COMMAND !!! then /pet follow me. So you can check your progress..
One note: Post put Tanik on the south side of the ramp. On my server I get the death squad on the south side.. And 3 times I have seen Tanik pop on the north side of the ramp. I am multi questing for a friend. All I did was tell Borannin "what is brewing?" and "I will accept this mission". I have the 4th shawl. My friend was not on line. So it seens we can repeat the quest more than once. And out of order. Once it has been done to that level once. Good Luck on your quest.
And thx for the warning or I would have gone out without triggering the quest.

I have tried using the pet trick and nothing, stayed there for about 3 hours and nothing. Went to hail Borannin went back to EW and put pet at the end of the ramp followed the path pet was looking and and no triggers at all. Nothing popped. Ran all over the ramp and the surrounding areas. Any ideas would be greatly appriciated

Just did this quest and found out that the traps do not trigger when you're floating. Which means that ya have to turn it off to get tanik to pop. Also this can be a good way to avoid prematurely triggering the trap while you're moving around. Just FYI. Hope this helps.

Ok I stand corrected. I THOUGHT lev worked to avoid the triggers till I was running through ew with lev on and triggered 2 death squads while I was trying to get to zone. However I distinctly remember walking right over a trigger point (could tell it was a trigger from my pet) with lev on without it going off.

So I dunno. How far you're above the ground may have something to do with it... I'll experiment some and post my results. Anyway, be careful around triggers. Even with lev.

Here is what I know.
# Aug 04 2002 at 11:31 AM Rating: Decent
Ok. That was 2AM frustration. I will post what I know and think in an attempt to help and not discourage.

I think Tanik stays in one spot until found.
Tanik is placed there when anyone tells Borannin that they will do the mission. He stays there until found.

If his place of hidding is on the outside of the ramp but back at the Kael end people that start from the entrance to the ramp will ALWAYS get the Death Squad. These range from 2 to 8! But 8 may be from triggering two squads.

Here is my advice:

Test the middle of the entrance of the ramp first with a pet set to guard. Move slowly in the direction that the pet is facing. Move the pet to guard further in that direction if needed to find the DS or Tanik, whichever he is pointing to.

If you keep getting DS then try starting about one third of the way from the structure of Kael ON THE SIDE of the ramp. Not the steep slope. On the outside of the whole ramp. If the pet points directly to the guard at the entrance to Kael, you have eliminated the first two thirds of the side. Tanik cannot be there or it would point at him. Do this for both sides of the ramp to start with to narrow your search.

Keep in mind once anyone uncovers his hidding spot he needs to be re-hidden by talking to Borannin again. He will be in a NEW spot now.

Sometimes his hidding spot is right next to a DS trigger spot so running around frantically looking for Tanik will give you a DS also more times than not because you trigger both spots.

When I found him on the south outside of the ramp, I tried giving him the gate potion but could not until I hailed him then told him "I will help". I added the word "you" the first time and couldnt hand him the potion. I was frantic because by now the walrus I had charmed was getting impatient. But I didnt kill him because he did help find Tanik for me.

Using this tactic, I was able to reset Tanik and return to help another person find Tanik. In 10 minutes!

Most times that people cant find him it is due to his hiding spot. If on the outside far away from the entrance to the ramp people will always hit the DS spot first. One poor guy I have seen look for weeks for Tanik because of this. His corpse is STILL at the end of the ramp from yesterday. That is when I stopped waiting for him to find Tanik and found him early this morning.

Hope this helps lessen frustration.

Goodhunting all!

# Aug 04 2002 at 12:54 AM Rating: Decent
I have done MANY quests. Now that the coin trick doesn't work, this is by far the lamest of all.

Three of us have taken turns trying to find Tanik for THREE solid days trying all variations listed and as many others as I can think of but only DS are triggered. In fact the last 10 times I have gone back to Borannin everytime I get a DS to make sure that it is not the reason for this quests lameness but alas... its lame.
Velium Vapors Nerfed?

I just completed this quest. One of the things I noticed is that when I created my vial of velium vapors, (the one that has the Thurgadin Gate charge) it said Recommended Level: 60.

Does that mean we can't use it until 60?
RE: Velium Vapors Nerfed?

Funnily enough it should mean exactly that. But I could use the potion at lvl 53, so either the message is a bug or my ability to use the potion.

Tripped the spawn the other night while running from the walrus area towards the GD zone. The trap area was to the left of the Kael ramp. My necro had 1/2 health left and I saw the message. 2 giants attacked me (no sow) and I quickly cast FD while my skeleton pet bravely gave up his life for me. After they killed it they stood by me, obviously fooled but I was like 'oh man they gonna stand here long?' Then they just poofed. Whew.
Death Squad to Kael!

Death Squad to Kael!

While hunting in EW I see this in shout every once in a while. When the player shouts this does this mean he has to run to the zone to lose aggro, then try again to find Tanik? A failed attempt?

Can a druid quickly snare these guys then root them and give the vial to Tanik or are they too fast? Only 2 giants right? Or more?
RE: Death Squad to Kael!
# Aug 01 2002 at 3:07 PM Rating: Decent
Yes, it means they need to zone to lose agro and Kael is the closest zone by far. They will need to try again. I hope I don't.

As for snaring, I do not have experience with them yet but have two comments:

1) They are around level 50, and snaring mobs significantly higher than you (I'm 43) does not work or if it does, not for long.
2) They run farily fast with those long legs and hit extremely hard for our thin druid skins, so I would not even bother trying to cast ensnare on them, just be like the rest of the throngs and yell "Deathsquad to Kael" as you jet down the ramp.
I did it

Well, I am the same guy who was just moaning about the tediousness of this quest ... and last night I completed it! :-)

Basically, I found Tanik where I had found him (and several DS spawns) before - at the top of the ramp - neither to the North or the South of it...

As you approach the ramp (as if to descend it) just run around that little area there.

You will probably spawn DS but Tanik also spawns there definitely.

It was quite a relief to get that part finally over and done with and now all I have to moan about is getting 75 Crystalline Silk Threads for Part Five hehe :-)
Finding Tanik Sucks
# Jul 02 2002 at 5:50 AM Rating: Default
This part of the Quest is really tedious... I know quest should be challenging but this is just frustrating.

I have been trying on and off to get Tanik to spawn for several weeks now and, like a poster earlier, only got him to spawn once but Death Squad also spawned right on top of him so it wasnt possible to deal with him.

Sometimes I am just running around the area like an idiot for ages and nothing at all pops... the rest of the time I spawn the Death Squad.

Fortunately, it IS possible to outrun them with sow so I just run until I cant hear their footsteps any longer then Gate out of there.

I am pretty sure doing this wont please anyone hunting in EW who I might possibly train with the Death Squad (although I dont think it has happened yet).

Finding the spawn point is hard enough to make this challenging but the ratio of Tanik to DS spawns seems a bit ridiculous to me - to make the quest fun and exciting rather than frustrating I think Verant should change it round so that you will *probably* spawn Tanik but there is always the chance of getting Death Squad - at present it is the total opposite it seems.

Just my two cents...

I have noticed the recommended level of 60, but I have been using it since level 44 and continute to do so now at 49. Eveyone else I know uses them and non of them are level 60 either. Don't know if this is a glitch, but I sure like having it. Just thought everyone should know, for the time being you can ignore the recommended level part. :)
Getting Tanik to Pop
# Jun 29 2002 at 2:22 AM Rating: Default
Just completed the Quest..again! This time for the Druid. I guess he had so much fun helping me he couldnt resist. So after 2 nights in a row this is what we discovered...

When you are ready to go find Tanik (with Vial of Velium Vapors) Go see Borannin first! even if you have already talked to him and accepted the mission the day before go ask him again "What is Brewing" then make sure you say "yes I will accept the mission" here's why:

The first time we try to find Tanik we get 4 or 5 Death Squads, both of us are tired and agravated, and thinking that the Quest is messed up becouse of the June 18th post. We call it a night, As I said before I dont have a lot of patience. After talking to a GM and finding there were no known problems with the Quest it was just how the Quest was being done. I came to the conclusion that maybe the very first trigger was talking to Borannin before heading out to find Tanik.

The first time we did this it took us 3 tries and on the Third try Tanik popped on South side of ramp about where the tutorial says he will. Tonight we went to find Tanik, couldnt find any bunnys on track to charm so we used a walrus, and we get The Death Squad 4 times in a row. So I ask the Druid "did you talk to Borannin before we came here?" he says he asked what was brewin but that was all. Soooo back to Thurgadin we go

After talkin to Borannin and accepting the mission, we get back to the ramp to find that now there are bunnys on track. We take that as a good sign. We get 2 Death Squads and the third time we try the bunny points North. We take this as a bad sign. Anticipating the Death Squad to drop on our heads again we were sure surprised to see Tanik. He popped up at -5691, 3792.

So 2 nights in a row we were successful in obtaining the Fur Lined Prayer Shawl in a short amount of time. Good Luck all :)

Tanik
# Jun 27 2002 at 6:53 PM Rating: Default
I successfully finished this part of the quest during the week of 6/10/02. It took about 5 total hours over 2 days. I actually had him spawn twice, but both times he spawned with a death squad right on top of him. I got the "Snow crumbles away" message right on top of "You've been ambushed by giants". The first time I ran to Kael then back, but he had already de-spawned. The second time, 18 death squads and a day later, the same thing happened. I ran the giants around, did a quick trade with Tanik and quickly got bent over by 6 giants. The two times he spawned were each on different sides of the Kael ramp, and I was able to use the pet guard trick to locate the spawn spots reliably. I turned in the note and shawl to Borannin with no problems.

My experience in getting Tanik to spawn was gruelling. I spent over 9 hours once and many nights over a period of maybe four weeks now. Finally go Tanik to spawn (about 16 death squads first).

BUT when I handed in Shawl#3 and Tanik's Note to Borannin, nothing happened. No exp, no Shawl #4, no Shawl#3 back or Note, no response whatsoever....

I am trying to contact GM's right now, but be careful on this portion of the quest right now if you are doing it. Wait to see if bug gets fixed first. I will post again with outcome.

I read this Post on the 25th and held off doing prayer shawl #4 becouse I didnt want to loose everything or spend countless hours getting nowhere but by 1:00am on the 27th (EST) and no updated post letting us all know if there was a bug or not I investigated myself. I'm just not a patient person. Here's what I found...
Before you go looking for Tanik go to Loremaster Borannin and say "What is Brewing?" (even if you have already done this part before)and after he ask you if you will accept the mission you say "Yes I will accept this mission"
I believe this makes Tanik spawn. (just my opinion for those of you who like to argue)
Then myself, 41st lvl cleric, and my good friend 54th lvl druid set off to find Tanic using the charm bunny method. Standing at top of the ramp the bunny led us south and we uncovered the Death Squad, 2nd attempt the bunny led us north and although we knew that was wrong we followed.. again we uncovered the Death Squad. But they say three's a charm and so it held true for us. Top of Ramp the bunny faced south and holding our breaths we headed out and Voila 1 ruff lookin little dude named Tanik. I was so excited I didnt even hail him until after I gave Him the Vial (and before I pushed the trade button, again for those of you who like to argue)
I rushed back to Borannin and the exchange was succesful!

I have spent 3 hours with 3 friends running around trying to get the spawn. We have managed to get the Death Squad 12 times now. I think this part of the quest is broken

Yeah, the Shawl quest has been a little messed up since a recent patch (who knows which? =).

I was going to finish the 4th Shawl quest this weekend, but now I'll wait. Please let us know how it turns out (Ie. What GM says? What the hell is the problem? etc)

I am a level 43 druid. Since the coin trick wont work (and Im not at all sure I know what is any way) and I have no pet to help, how do I get Tanik to spawn? safely and accurately?

Last night I spent over 2 hours running around and someone cast a spell that made the DS appear.

In addition does any one know the timing on his spawns?

Thank you

Isserlie, The important thing to remember here is that it is not a "spawn" in the classic sense, it is more like a trap (in that) you have to step in the area to trigger the spawn. Use the coin trick...stand at a corner of the ramp and continually click up and down the screen circling in an arc from one corner to the other..when you get the Death Sqad trap message, then go trigger and run for the Kael Zone. I found more success with actually tripping the traps and have them reset to get Tanik Spawn. Ive done the 4th shawl 5 times already, and never had to wait longer than about 3 hours for Tanik to spawn.

They fixed the problem with him not handing out the quests, I went there this morning and he was working again.
Faction?

I was trying to get the next quest in the line after finishing shawl #3, I tried saying "what brewing" and "what is brewing" to Borannin but he just told me to be seated and listen to the wisdom of the ages or some such. My faction with the Coldain is warmly, do I need a higher faction to recieve this quest?

your faction is not the problem, when you speak to Borannin just make sure that you are not targetting him when talking to him...if you target him it will not work...so just stand up close to him and say "what is brewing?" then it should work...this happened to me as well =P

How to get Him to spawn fast
# May 27 2002 at 9:49 PM Rating: Decent
Go to the loc listed above, it is the south side of valley that leads to Kael and run around up there, then travel down the cliff SLOWLY and at an angle. Then return to mouth of valley and he should be off to the right a tad! Took me all of 5 minutes to get him to spawn, very easy hehe.

Also, Make sure you have the Vial first, saves a bunch of time as it did for me)
Regarding the pet trick (it really does work)

As a druid I was charming a nearby greenie walrus to help me with this, my only advice is dont get right on the edge of the ramp. Back it up a little, then have do the /pet guard here, and just run in a straight line back and forth, eventually you will hit the trigger. Hope this helps
